App allows Elkhart County residents to record
%\ 6+(/%< +$55(// 6WDII :ULWHU “Stories are the most important component in the fabric of life,” said Elkhart County resident Larry App. “They are how we learn and how we make sense of the world around us.” His work as founder and soleproprietor of Stories Retold, a small documentary production company, affords clients the opportunity to weave legacies that inspire members of future generations. “I believe that stories are incredibly important and powerful ways to learn a variety of different things,” said App. “If I can help somebody tell their story using video, that’s what I do.” The idea behind Stories Retold came from a desire to create an additional stream of income during the economic recession that occurred throughout the late 2000s. “For some reason, these videos came up,” said App, who worked as an accountant at the time. “I use a different side of my brain, so I’ve enjoyed paralleling the work I did in accounting alongside that since 2006.” App conducts his interviews in a way that is most comfortable for each storyteller. “I usually start out with questions like ‘What is your full name? Where were you born? How many brothers and sisters did you have?’ And similar kinds of things. After that, I can ask them some questions that are a little deeper and require some thought.” One of his favorite questions to ask interviewees is what they remember about their grandparents. “When I

interview these people in this way, I’m really hearing about the generation before them,” App explained. “These people who are gone are telling me stories through their living relatives.” The documentarian has amassed an extensive collection of his own family’s historical records. While conducting his research, App came across an account of his family’s settlement within the American Midwest. He found the story of ancestor John Mathias App, who ventured west during the California Gold Rush in 1850, particularly enthralling. Working as a clerk in his father’s hardware store, John Mathias was able to efficiently assemble his wagon. “He kept a handwritten diary in which he wrote down all of the supplies he took as well as the cost of each item,” said App. “He was very Continued on page 2
