The worldwide Secular Franciscan Order began more than 800 years ago by St. Francis of Assisi, and was the inspiration for the St. Charles Fraternity, established circa 1936 in Fort Wayne, to create the Franciscan Center. While all programs are overseen by a small staff, the true heart and soul of The Franciscan Center is its comprehensive network of dedicated volunteers. More than 4,300 individuals contribute some 9,000 hours to the center each year and are instrumental to the success of its programs. Volunteers range in age from five to 85, but all have one thing in common: They lend their neighbors a helping hand whenever possible and help to create blessings in the lives of others. One of those volunteers for the food pantry program is Don Esser. Originally from Detroit, he spent nine years in the U.S. Navy.
