Q (VVHU OH G 3DQWU\ SDWURQV D P VHYHUDO UH IW LQGLFDWH PHDW LWHP According to the website, The Franciscan Center was founded in V WKH FXV JLYHQ V 1989 by Sally Ley and the late Jean Kelly as a homeless shelter and sack lunch program. The worldwide Secular Franciscan Order began more than 800 years ago by St. Francis of Assisi, and was the inspiration for the St. Charles Fraternity, established circa 1936 in Fort Wayne, to create the Franciscan Center.

While all programs are overseen by a small staff, the true heart and soul of The Franciscan Center is its comprehensive network of dedicated volunteers. More than 4,300 individuals contribute some 9,000 hours to the center each year and are instrumental to the success of its programs. Volunteers range in age from five to 85, but all have one thing in common: They lend their neighbors a helping hand whenever possible and help to create blessings in the lives of others.

One of those volunteers for the food pantry program is Don Esser. Originally from Detroit, he spent nine years in the U.S. Navy. Goodwill president, CEO retiring after 32 years %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Bill Warriner works for an organization that empowers and prepares people for independence through training, personal growth and work.

He’s been at it 32 years.

The Salem native is stepping down at the end of the year from Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana. He’s been its president and chief executive officer since Jan. 2, 1991. His successor, Kevin Morse, comes to the organization with a background in both social services and retail experience that will fit well with Goodwill’s eight retail stores.

“People are very familiar with our stores and collection boxes, but they’re not as familiar with our job training services for persons with disabilities and those with employment barriers,” said Warriner. “That’s what actually drew me to Goodwill because of the opportunity to help people gain skills that will make them independent and be gainfully employed.”

He was fortunate to have

been involved in social work pretty much his entire life.

After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in social work, he spent a couple years at Citizen’s Multi-Service Center in Indianapolis, before coming to Fort Wayne in 1981 to do a practicum at Catholic Social Services, while finishing his master’s in social work.

“I finished it and stayed nine years doing counseling, being a liaison with United Way, record keeping, handling state contracts and administrative duties and working with the board of directors.

Before coming to Goodwill, I was assistant director,” he said.

Looking back on his tenure at Goodwill, Warriner pointed to expanding services in the 1990s through a contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to assist veterans with disabilities to enter the workforce through case management and job placement.

“In the 2000s, we joined forces with Transition Partners of Northeast Indiana to assist high school students with disabilities make the

move from school to employment. We also became involved with Walgreens and the Indiana State Vocational Rehabilitation Service to launch a retail training program to give participants the skills to work in a store,” he said.

Other recent programs include an e-commerce internship listing training program to teach individuals how to photograph, list, describe, pack and ship on-line orders.

A Martin ukulele was recently left in a collection box.

“It was listed on our website and brought $7,000 that was directed back into the training programs,” he noted. “In addition, a janitorial internship training program has been initiated to teach cleaning techniques, safety, use of chemicals and cleaning supplies. Ninety cents of every dollar goes into training programs.”

During the past three decades, the organization grew from 32 employees and two retail stores to 220 employees and eight stores, with five in Fort Wayne and locations in Huntington, Angola and Auburn.

places where people can purchase used clothing and goods at affordable prices. By repurposing those items, they actually reduce the impact on the environment of thousands and thousands of tons of goods going to landfills,” he added.

Goodwill has been described as a business with a social mission.

“Our customers’ needs have changed over the years, and we’ve kept pace by improving the way we collect and market goods, by expanding the number of retail stores, by adapting to technological innovations and by broadening our services. It has been both interesting and challenging.

There has never been a dull day,” Warriner stated.

Neighborhood families come to the food pantry once a month to receive groceries and a smile, Esser related. It takes more than 350 volunteer hours to serve an average of 800-plus families each month from 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Some folks are so ‘happy go lucky,’” Esser said. “You wouldn’t know they had a care in the world.”

The food pantry has been giving out turkeys or hams from Community Harvest Food Bank’s “Turkey Tuesday” for at least 20 years, Esser said. People come about two hours early and assemble in the parking lot instead of coming inside as they usually do on their monthly visits. Patrons are given a turkey slip on their monthly visit prior

to Thanksgiving.

In addition to the food pantry program, other Franciscan Center ministries include a sack lunch program with more than 1,200 lunches delivered to the hungry every Saturday.

The Medicine Cabinet program serves individuals with over-the-counter medications, toiletries and personal hygiene needs, and the Feed My Sheep program encourages community and business groups, neighborhood associations and churches to support the food pantry by providing the tools for organizing their own food drives to benefit The Franciscan Center.

Mayor proclaims ‘Family Caregiver Day’ at annual AIHS event Oct. 25 %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU The scene was one of celebration at the Aging and In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana Inc. annual meeting and awards ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Parkview Mirro Center, Fort Wayne.

It may have been the 45th meeting, and included a luncheon and keynote speaker as usual, but the term “unprecedented” came up fairly often.

That’s partly because there had been no annual meeting for three years due to the pandemic. Plus, the pandemic impacted how the organization contributed to public health and how many it served.

To kick off the day, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry proclaimed the day “Family Caregiver Day,” commending AIHS for making the city “a better place to live.”

Special recognition was given Keith Huffman for his meritorious service. President and CEO of AIHS, Connie Benton Wolfe, praised him for his work, especially noting his determination in what seemed, at times, to be against all odds.

She quoted Huffman as saying, “If we have to change the whole industry to change our own destiny, well then, we’d better do it.”

In her talk on the state of the agency, Benton Wolfe centered on the theme of a quote by Winston Churchill: “Kites ride highest against the wind, not with it.”

There were special blue pens, the tops designed in the shape of kites, artfully decorating the tables.

Benton Wolfe mused that if someone had told her a pandemic would be declared and cause all of the plans to change, she would

Many individuals and organizations were recognized, and the premier sponsors were American Senior Communities and Old National. Nearly 20 sponsors of various levels were thanked, too.

Benton Wolfe said one of the changes involved stepping up to the plate to serve about 15% more clients per year through the pandemic. AIHS had been in a new building only a few months, when it needed to regroup and do all remote work.

For that reason, the entire board of AIHS was called to the stage and were presented with awards.

There was a sense of triumph and camaraderie on stage as the names shown on the screen and people gathered until all were there.

smoothly and ended on time, if not a bit early. Dozens of people took the opportunity to purchase Kimberly Williams-Paisley’s book on coping with, and insights on, her mother’s dementia.

Jazzy music, performed live by the West Central Quartet Band, helped to ease the wait as people chatted to meet Williams-Paisley and get her signature.

The need for it can “surprise you,” they said. It was their first time attending the event, and they weren’t sure they would be able to make it.

“We’re surprised at how big it was and how good it was,” Ehresman said.

It’s about helping people.

Their responsibility is to get clients safely to and from

“It’s not like driving a city transit bus,” said Derose. “We don’t just pull up and wait for them to get on. We go into their home or facility and escort them into the van. Some are in wheelchairs. Every morning before starting on a run, the one who is taking it out does a thorough inspection to make sure it’s ready to roll.

That means going through a checklist on their iPads, including checking the oil, transmission fluids, windshield washer fluid, gas gauge, turn signals, lights, safety flashers, emergency brake, horn and back-up alarm.

“It’s vital to make sure the entry doors and the wheelchair lift are working properly,” said Morrow. “I usually take some Windex and clean soap spots off the windows after the van has been through the wash. We check the air pressure in the tires, the tread depth, take photos of the van to document its condition and when we return it, we make sure the inside

is clean.”

“Both of us are pretty picky when it comes to our van,” said Derose.

Morrow came to Fort Wayne in 1974, after serving four years in the U.S. Navy, to visit his brother. He didn’t plan to stay, but ended up getting a job at International Harvester and staying. After International Harvester closed, he worked at Slater Steel until retiring in 2017, the year he joined CTN. He drives four days a week starting at 6:30 a.m. transporting a load of people to Benchmark and a second load at 8 a.m. to Easter Seal/ARC. On Thursday, Morrow takes a group, generally the same every week, shopping wherever they want to go. On Saturday, his destination is a variety of dialysis clinics.

“I really enjoy helping people, getting to know them and form-

ing relationships,” said Morrow. “I especially like meeting up with my Thursday gang.

They’re a lot of fun.”

Derose, a Fort Wayne native and rural Hoagland resident, said he was really happy when CTN opened its new southeast garage in July at the corner of Maplecrest and Moeller roads.

It only takes him 10 minutes to get to work now instead of 25 or 30 minutes from the north location on Industrial Road.

He began driving for CTN, D QRQSURÀW in 2020 after 26 years at a local firm.

“Every time I pick up a load of people, I realize just how important this service is to those who have no other way to get to their appointments.

This job is really humbling.

I thank God every day that I have my health and am able to get around on my own,” said Derose.

60s Flashback —

Sometimes a dragon is just a dragon In 1959, Brooklynite Lenny Lipton was a 19-year-old sophomore at New York’s Cornell University. One spring night, the engineer- $ %RRPHU %ODVW 7R 7KH 3DVW ing major %\ 5$1'$/ planned to & +,// meet for dinner with his friend Lenny Edelstein, a campus pal who roomed with a folk-music-playing student named Peter Yarrow.

To kill a little time that afternoon, poetry-loving Lipton wandered over to the library at the Cornell Student Union — and consequently changed his fortune.

There he selected a volume of poems by humorist Ogden Nash.

(Lipton had always been drawn to

Nash’s droll, playful works.) One particular Nash creation caught Lipton’s eye. “The Tale of Custard the Dragon” was a 1936 tale that involved the end of childhood, something which had been on Lipton’s mind as of late.

He reshelved the book and headed for his friend’s house in the Collegetown area. As he strolled into town, Lipton created his own poem about a dragon, an imaginary and ageless creature named Puff, who lived for a while in the heart and mind of a young boy named Jackie Paper.

By the time Lipton reached the Edelstein-Yarrow house, his verses were fully formed, and he wanted to write them down before they faded from his mind. Nobody was home, but the door was unlocked, so Lipton let himself in, rolled a sheet of paper into Yarrow’s typewriter, and typed furiously for three minutes to

create “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

Lipton then left his poem in Yarrow’s machine and promptly forgot about it.

“Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea “And frolicked in the autumn mist “In a land called Honalee.”

When Yarrow saw the work later, it struck him that Lipton’s words could easily become a catchy folk ditty. Yarrow wrote it as “Puff (the Magic Dragon)” and, once he became a part of the supergroup Peter, Paul and Mary, he began including the fantasy yarn in the fast-rising trio’s act.

In early 1963, Yarrow made sure Lipton received writer’s credit when the melancholy tune became the first million-selling single for the trio. Strangely, Lipton had forgotten all about his off-the-cuff creation about what would, in time, become the world’s most beloved dragon.

Lipton later blamed some Puff problems on gossipy New York journalist Dorothy Kilgallen, who in 1964 charged that Lipton’s ode contributed to the growing

When asked about the real meaning, Lipton scoffed. “The Puff story is really just a lot like Peter Pan. (It’s about the) loss of innocence and having to face an adult world. ... I find the fact that

people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids.”

In Peter, Paul and Mary concerts, as Yarrow picked the opening guitar notes of “Puff,” he would sometimes smile and explain, “This is a song about a dragon ... It’s not about anything else … Just a dragon …”

The Festival of Trees is one of the region’s most anticipated holiday traditions. The 38th annual Festival of Trees will be held Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Embassy Theatre.

Enthusiasm for golf has enhanced Judi Stinson’s life %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Judi Stinson has golfed most of her life, and was introduced to the game in the most unique way. She and her husband were inspired by watching a professional golfer.

“Golf entered my life back in my early 20s,” Stinson said.

“Arnold Palmer was at Cedar Creek Golf Course in Leo. Phil and I were very athletic, but golf in those days was usually executives and their families at country clubs. Both of our parents worked in local factories.

Neither of our families had ever been involved in many sports. Phil and I both played racquetball, bowling and tennis.”

Once the couple decided to get into golf, Stinson acquired a set of clubs in one standard way of purchasing many items at that time.

“After watching the Arnold Palmer Exhibition, Phil and I decided it looked like a sport we could enjoy,” she said. “Most people may remember S&H Green Stamps and Maloley’s had M&M Stamps. I used my S&H Green stamps and purchased my first set of golf clubs. They were Patty Berg, and were made by Wilson, as I remember.”

Fast forward to today and she still continues to golf, and her two adult children do as well. It’s a family affair.

Her daughter, Lori Stinson, said her mother turned 80 in September and has played in more than 50 Fort Wayne Women’s City Golf Tournaments.

“She is always so positive and encouraging with everyone she plays with,” her daughter said.

Stinson explained, “When the kids were in their teens, golf and ski were the favorite family vacations. We had a family membership through the years at both Lakeside and

“Once we traveled to the West Coast, we played 18 holes almost every day in the various states on some wonderful courses. Two favorites out west were Tammaron in Colorado and Pebble Beach in California when we went to San Francisco.”

Stinson has made three holes-in-one. One time was even in Canada. She keeps in overall shape to improve her game.

“I enjoy working out,” she said. “I go to Planet Fitness here in town and enjoy workouts with my son, Brad.

They have some great weight machines. It helps keep my body active. In Florida, I go to

a morning walking fitness class seven days a week. At my age, I think staying active is a very positive daily item.”

Her enthusiasm for golf has enhanced her life.

“You meet a lot of wonderful people on the golf course,” Stinson said. “Our local Fort Wayne Chapter of the LPGA is a wonderful experience, too. We play in a Monday match play league. Wednesday and Thursday are nine-hole league days.

We also have Saturday and Sunday travel events. It is just a wonderful bunch of women who enjoy playing golf.”

Elder Law Q: Should I add my child to my bank account?

A: Should your child be added to your

bank account? The answer varies, but in most cases, you should not add your child to your bank account.

People are often told that as part of their estate planning they should add at least one child to their bank account. The reasons given include that the child can assist in paying bills, the child will need access to the funds upon the parent’s death, and to avoid the often-maligned probate estate process. I would suggest there are better tools to accomplish the same goals without the negatives that adding a child to the bank account brings.

Adding a child to a parent’s bank account can lead to problems. Once added to the account, the child is now also owner of the funds. If the child should withdraw money without permission, there is no legal recourse.

If a child is co-owner, it subjects the parent’s savings to all the problems in the child’s life, including divorce, bankruptcy, and litigation.

‘I Can See Clearly Now’ Johnny Nash

While the now classic song was not autobiographical for Johnny Nash, his recording is one of the

most iconic tunes of the 1970s — or any decade — and the ultimate feel-good work about overcoming adversity and reveling in the joy of new hope and courage, and the determination to move forward.

“Look all around, there’s nothing but blue skies “Look straight ahead, nothing but blue skies.”

“I Can See Clearly Now” has been described as “soulful pop” powered by a gentle undercurrent of reggae, a musical genre from Jamaica that blended local folk music with such instruments as the guitar, banjo and hand drums. Yet little is known about the talented (and pretty much forgotten) originator of the song that ushered in a form of music

new to a mainstream American audience.

John Lester Nash Jr. was born in Houston in 1940 to a homemaker and a chauffeur. A goodlooking, well-mannered child, he was raised on gospel and sang at the neighborhood Progressive New Hope Baptist Church. At age 13, Nash began performing on Matinee, a Houston afternoon program that helped break down the color barrier on local television. Within three years, he was earning more money than his father.

Signing on to the ABCParamount label, Nash became a successful recording artist at age 17. His first release fizzled, but his second single of “A Very

Special Love” rocketed into the national Top 25 on the Billboard charts. Movie work soon followed.

In 1958, he won the lead role in a film called “Take a Giant Step,” in which he portrayed a Black high schooler struggling in a white neighborhood. Two years later, Johnny appeared as a gang member in the movie, “Key Witness.”

Back in the recording studio, he eschewed rock ’n’ roll in favor of urbane ballads much in the style of Johnny Mathis. By the mid-1960s, though, Nash found himself out of work and pretty much overlooked.

In 1965, he and his manager/ business partner, Danny Sims, moved to Jamaica in hopes a new locale might rekindle Nash’s

Beginning in 2021, Medicare prescription drug plans were able to apply to offer lower insulin costs through the Part D Senior Savings Program Model.

Since that time, the number of

insurance plans offering savings to Medicare beneficiaries for a broad number of insulin drugs has increased dramatically.

Medicare prescription drug plans for 2023 will all include this new insulin savings program. Under this new mandate, beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Medicare prescription drug plans cannot charge a Medicare beneficiary any more than $35 for a one-month supply of each Medicare (Part D) covered

insulin, and they cannot apply your insulin toward a deductible first.

Cindy Gosert lives out the call to serve %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Cindy Gosert has found a way to regularly live out the call to serve — literally. She participates in the community dinners on Thursdays at Trinity English Lutheran Church, serving food to those who attend.

However, to reach that place of serving, her activities with the church evolved over time, as the church also added other ministries.

“Pre-COVID, Trinity offered assistance hours on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings, in which we assisted our neighbors in downtown Fort Wayne with food vouchers to Community Harvest, clothing vouchers to Wellspring Shoppe, and guided them in finding assistance with other needs,” Gosert said.

“My husband, Jeff, and I were involved in this ministry of our church. We got to know many of the people who came to assistance hours. We found that many of them wanted to tell their story and have others understand them on a personal basis.”

Those first efforts to serve the community led to offering the dinners.

“This year, when Trinity English began our Thursday night dinners, Jeff and I became involved. Jeff, along with David Goodman, manages the volunteers who are not in the kitchen. I usually help set tables, greet our diners, serve

food, clean up and do dishes.

Some of our volunteers come every week. Others come once or twice a month. Our greatnieces and great-nephews have helped volunteer.”

From the beginning, there were special efforts in place for the dinners. They opted not to serve food buffet style.

“All of our neighbors who come to dinner are served dinner by the volunteers. We feel that serving them as guests shows two things. One, they are our guests, and two, there will be enough food for everyone so no one has to be first in line, or stand in line.

“We use the church dinnerware and glasses. We serve them and also clear their plates and get them seconds.

We see moms being able to just eat with their kids instead of juggling the cooking, serving, eating and cleaning up. We see loners being welcomed and included,” she said. “We see friends meeting up and sitting together and talking.”

They always pray before the meal and ask for prayer requests, which are then included in the “blessing.”

“I’ve learned that just knowing someone’s name so they become an individual can make all the difference in someone feeling they are seen,” Gosert said. “I’ve seen people who join us for dinner out in the community. They are always pleased that I remember their name, ask about their family, their job, if they are feeling better, etc.”

She added, “We try to do extras for the group.”

Several weeks ago, Gosert said, she took the leftover bread and made white chocolate cranberry bread pudding for dessert. “It was served warm with ice cream. It was a big hit,” she said.

Break out the slow cooker or pressure cooker and make homemade meals that will last more than one day. Use all leftovers. Make bread — it’s easy, fun and so much less expensive. Actress was guest speaker at family caregiver event %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU Kimberly Williams Paisley brought her star power, as well as a tender heart, to the Aging and In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana annual meeting Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Fort Wayne.

Best known by many as the daughter in the “Father of the Bride” movies from the 1990s, she shared a sobering message with the audience. However, she still managed to bring a light touch, and even introduced some humor, during her sometimes emotionally charged talk about how dementia impacted her family.

The pressure Paisley felt about having the perfect wedding may have generated her most notable one-liner, which happened about midway into her presentation.

“I didn’t want anyone to come to my wedding and say the movie was better,” she quipped.

Everyone in the large event room erupted into laughter, essentially bringing down the house.

Paisley, married to country musician Brad Paisley since 2003 and the mother of two teenage sons, held the audience spellbound as she told the story of her mother, Linda Barbara Williams, who passed away in

2016 at 73, having been diagnosed many years prior with dementia. Paisley’s intention in telling her mom’s story was to help others, which was clear as she so naturally dropped in wisdom and pieces of advice, all in a conversational style.

She started by acknowledging caregivers and how important they are. Then she went into the early signs of her mother’s illness, from her negative reaction to hearing her daughter was engaged, to having trouble finding words during her speech at the wedding and mispronouncing the words she read during it.

By all accounts, her mother was a vital, exceptionally talented woman, so what seemed like somewhat subtle changes were disconcerting.

Eventually, the family decided, “Something’s wrong.” After two years of testing, the diagnosis that her mother had dementia and would need full-time care within a few years “hit like a bomb.”

At this point in the story, Paisley gave her first lesson to listeners, in the form of a mistake she felt here family had made. Her vulnerability made many of her comments resonate that much more. At her mother’s request, the family kept the diagnosis a secret.

“This meant we received no support, “Paisley said. “We missed out on support and tools to handle what was coming.”

It came across as an acknowledgement of the important role played by the event organizers, Aging and In-Home Services.

She admitted that their struggle to keep things as normal as possible, to maintain and preserve her mother’s autonomy, had serious consequences. At one point, her mother held Paisley’s baby boy in an unstable way, and he nearly dropped onto the floor.

Once her mom mistook the gas pedal for the brake while driving and “impaled” a car to a wall in the Costco parking lot. Yet, they still let her get back behind the wheel. In some ways, it was a message, “Don’t do what we did.”

Her mother’s legacy was her zest for life.

“She did end up liking (Brad) very much,” she said, smiling in a genuine way, her pretty appearance reminding the audience why she was chosen for Hollywood.

“When we were at Cape Cod, she always made us go out into the water when it was cold and nobody else did,” she said, seeming to relish the memory.

One of Paisley’s most significant insights was advice she was given to stop holding onto the old image of her mother and to look

“Look at this person, this new person. … It’s different but it’s still special. I have to say, some days I couldn’t do it,” she said.

Her book, “Where the Light Gets In,” alluded to another insight Paisley had from the tragic experience.

“In the darkest moments, the

light is the brightest,” she said.

That message rang true in Paisley’s words at the event.

The long line of people who purchased her book and waited to meet her and get her signature reflected that. To those who shared their own losses to dementia, she said with reverence, “I’m sorry.”

Vice president’s Columbia City home highlights his political life The 27th governor of Indiana, Thomas Marshall of Columbia City, who was well known for his humorous asides, once *5($7 quipped, (6&$3(6 “There were 7H[W $QG 3KRWRV once two %\ 52' .,1* brothers.

One went to sea and one became the 28th vice president of the United States. Neither of them were ever heard of again.” He was also credited with saying, “What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar.”

Marshall’s popularity as governor, and the fact that Indiana was a critical swing state, helped him secure the Democratic vice presidential nomination on the Woodrow Wilson ticket in 1912.

Under Wilson, as it turned out, he became the forgotten man in the government. A major ideological rift developed between the two in their first term, leading Wilson to limit Marshall’s influence in the administration. Marshall’s sense of humor rubbed the president the wrong way so he had his office moved out of the White House.

This quote made by Marshall in his vice presidential acceptance speech when he promised to “acknowledge the insignificance of the office,” and another quip saying, “I was the Wilson Administration spare tire … to be used in case of emergency,” infuriated the president.

After Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke, Marshall was kept in the dark while Mrs. Wilson essentially ran the government.

With Wilson unable to function, Marshall faced a huge decision because in 1918 there was no procedure for the vice president to step into the presidency. Fearing he would open up a constitutional crisis, he decided not to become president.

Scholars are still debating whether or not he made the right choice, but for Marshall, putting the Constitution ahead of his own agenda made perfect sense. It was not until 1967 that the 25th Amendment established a process for transfer of

house, which was built in 1864, was purchased in 1958 by the Whitley County Historical Society and it took several years to rehabilitate it. He was born in North Manchester, practiced law in Columbia City and is buried in Indianapolis.

A couple upstairs rooms focus on famous Whitley County people, including singer Janie Fricke, actor Dean Jagger, World War II Major General Keller Rockey and others.

My marriage is in jeopardy For decades, Mary Ellen and I have been fans of the show “Jeopardy.” Every night at 7:30 we watch to see how long it takes for us to feel really stupid. I often say, “I used to know that but I forgot,” which is pretty much the

same thing as not knowing the answer … I mean the question.

After Alex Trebek died a couple of years ago, the show’s producers ran old episodes featuring the legendary host. I’m not sure why I found that so unsettling. They

do the same with all old game shows.

“Hollywood Squares” has had more than 800 different personalities in the boxes.

I have to :2/)6,( do google searches to see which of the brilliant comedians are still with us.

What about putting some notation under each celebrity’s name to save me the time and trouble?

Local reporter turns novelist %\ &$/(,*+ %<5(5 6WDII :ULWHU Cathy Shouse, longtime Indiana resident and enthusiast, just released her debut romance novel, “Her Billionaire Cowboy’s Second Chance Romance,” on Oct. 4.

Born and raised in Indiana, Shouse developed a love for cowboys, as she once lived on a farm in a small town and visited the rodeo each summer.

She has been a recreational writer for as long as she can remember and became a news reporter in 2000. Shouse has written for glo magazine for many years and became a regular featured writer for the Allen County edition of Senior Life newspaper in 2022. She has also written features and columns for New Sentinel.

Shouse combined her lifetime of writing experience, reporting experience and love of the smalltown farm life into her first novel: over 200 pages of heart-gripping cowboy romance.

Placed in Indiana, the book is about the complex story of Wyatt Galloway and Sierra Delaney: best friends in high school who had just begun dating when Wyatt left abruptly.

After 16 years apart, they have both returned to their hometown.

Sierra returned to save her family’s diner with an element of her health declining and Wyatt returned after the death of his wife to help on the farm and raise his toddler son.

During COVID, “Jeopardy” fever spilled over into our daily lives, since we had nothing better to do. Typically, around 6 p.m., Mary Ellen would say something like: “Sauteed chicken with green beans and sweet potatoes.”

Then I’d reply, “What’s for dinner?”

How much more fun can a couple have than that? (Now, remember, we are both in our 70s.)

Even when we had little arguments, our obsession with “Jeopardy” was evident. Mary Ellen would say to me in a broadcaster’s voice: “He leaves all the kitchen cabinet doors open, forgets to close the fridge door

and also leaves the garage door up.”

“Who is Dick Wolfsie?” Saying it out loud made me feel like I had been tricked into pleading guilty to these crimes. But I’m a very competitive person. I wanted to win.

My wife is a stickler for game rules. For example, while driving, I once said, “I think we’re lost.” I was quickly corrected by Mary Ellen: “Please put that in the form of a question.”

As we celebrated our 42nd anniversary last week, we reminisced about our decision to get married way back when.

Mary Ellen said: “When her husband-to-be had this nutty idea to be a TV personality, she unselfishly quit her good job in Chicago and went with him to Indianapolis.”

“Who was Mary Ellen Swegles?” I said without a moment’s thought.

“That is correct,” said my wife. “That’s exactly the question I was looking for.”

The article about Betty appeared in The Beacon newsletter of Saturday, July 24, 1943, titled, “American Bombs are Digging Victory Gardens in (her) Sicilian Home Lawn.” She wondered if those bombs were dropping in her front yard as “she owns a home in Messina, a strategic city located on the northeast tip of the island (of Sicily), which is now being heavily bombed by Allied fliers.”

“Betty’s parents came to America about 36 years ago and raised seven children. Since her parents’ move to America, relatives have lived in their ancestral home …” She, “who has never visited Sicily, yet, had planned to spend her honeymoon in this romantic
