Honoring ‘those plucky women’ during Women’s History Month %\ &$7+< 6+286( )HDWXUH :ULWHU In 2012, Bluffton writer Kayleen Reusser interviewed a World War II veteran for a newspaper. Fast forward to today and she has conducted 260 similar interviews, most of them with Hoosiers. Plus, just in time for March and Women’s History month, Reusser has released her 10th book about veterans, “Born To Be Soldiers: Those Plucky Women of World War II.” Thirteen of the 20 women she has interviewed will be featured. Reusser enthusiastically supports all veterans; her husband of 41 years, John, served 21 years with the Air Force, finishing with the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne. Their son Christopher now serves in the Air Force as an officer. Perhaps, in part, because the couple has two adult daughters, Reusser especially relishes connecting with the women veterans. She pointed out that during World War II, the women were not drafted. They volunteered. “I have to think that by being the first to volunteer to serve in the military in World War II, the women in my book forged the way as examples of true patriots for future generations,” Reusser said. “By knowing about them – their humanity and desire to do what they could to help win the war – we can feel inspired to serve our country today in similar ways to make it even greater.” Locals will have a special opportunity to hear Reusser speak from 2-3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at The History Center, 302 E. Berry St., Fort Wayne, during the monthly George R. Mather lecture series. Her lecture, “Those Plucky Women of World War II,” is free to the public. For more information, call The History Center at (260) 426-2882, visit www. fwhistorycenter.org or email administration@fwhistorycenter. org. Copies of her books, including a coloring book of women veterans, will be available for purchase (cash or credit card) and she’ll personally sign them. She was from Berne and served as an Army nurse in France and Germany. “Readers should contact me to be put on my email newsletter list. I have plans to interview Eileen and hopefully will be able to share a recording,” Reusser said. “In 2016 I took a 95-year-old female Navy veteran, Lucille Clarke from Fort Wayne, on the Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana. She is now 101 and her story is in my book, ‘We Gave Our Best: American WWII Veterans Tell Their Stories.’ “Rosemary Russell Schmidt of Fort Wayne told me she was pleased to discover that she and the other women were Continued on page 3
