KNOX, IN - Melissa Jay (Richie) Frain, 55, died Thursday, December 4, 2025 after a long courageous battle with neurofibromatosis (NF2). She was known as “Lady” to her family and was the most kind, full of grace human being they knew. She is survived by her husband, Brian M. Frain, three sons: Zachary Frain and Kaleb (Angelica) Frain, both of Knox and Braxton Clevenger of Plymouth, Indiana and one daughter, Anna Haskins of Hilliard, Ohio, one grandson, one brother, Daniel (Susan) Richie of Knox and two sisters: Barbara (Ray) Mitchener of Linn, Missouri and Lillian (Bradley) Small of Lake Wales, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Beatrice Richie and siblings: Larry and Garry Richie, Regina Risner and Pruda Dunno. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made by M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox.

WINAMAC, IN - Joseph P. “Joe” Vinarcsik, 66, died Sunday, November 30, 2025. He was born in Illinois. Joe attended HomewoodFlossmore High School and later studied at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. He loved the outdoors hunting and fishing. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his mother, Beverly Carroll and siblings: Melanie Eilers, Lynette Nuck and John Vinarcsik. No services will be held at this time. Memorials may be made to Riley Children’s Hospital. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

WINAMAC, IN - David A. Drane, 82, died Sunday, December 7, 2025 in Winamac, Indiana. He was born November 15, 1943 in Grovertown, Indiana to the late Walter Drane and Maude (Fraizer) Whitesell. David was a member of the NRA and Golden Eagles. He enjoyed collecting guns and shooting, his horses, dogs and cats and spending time with his family. He had worked as an ironworker for US Steel. He is survived by two daughters: Deana (Harold) Collins and Janeen (Keith) Berndt, both of Plymouth, Indiana, four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera and siblings: LeRoy Drane, Violet Nelson and Lucille Drane. Services were held Thursday, December 11 at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel. Interment was in the Oak Park Cemetery in Knox, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Starke County Humane Society. Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

PULASKI, IN - FORMERLY OF HESSVILLE, IN - Kay Ellen Rambo, 83, died at 10:15am on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Winamac, Indiana. She was born November 12, 1942 in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Ralph and Nancy Ann (Wright) Goodson. On April 28, 1962, she married Melldoran “Mell” Rambo. Kay was a member of TOPS in Star City, Indiana and enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, playing BUNCO, handheld video games and bowling. She is survived by her husband, Mell, one daughter, Denise M. Rambo of Bangor, Michigan, one son, Melldoran “Mel” (Ena) Rambo, Jr. of Hammond, Indiana, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by siblings: Barbara Lyday, Bill Goodson, Mike Goodson and Wanda Stevens. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

LAFAYETTE, IN - FORMERLY OF FRANCESVILLE, IN - Patricia L. “Pat” Wendt died Saturday, December 6, 2025 at her home. She was born September 2, 1936 in Rensselaer, Indiana to the late Raymond and Louise (Odom) Houston. In 1954, she married Ralph Wendt. Pat was a graduate of Francesville High School. She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Lafayette. She loved going to the movies and was a knowlegeable critic. She was a competitive but kind game player and a voracious reader. She was a lifelong Purdue Boilermakers and Chicago Cubs fan. She is survived by her husband, Ralph, four children: Sheri (David) Harris of Indianapolis, Indiana, Jim (Kelly) Wendt and Steve (Karyn) Wendt, both of Zionsville, Indiana and Jennifer (Vic) WIggins of Nicholasville, Kentucky, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one sister, Brenda Krug of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Linda Joy Runk and Mary Ann Halsema. Visitation will be from 11am-1pm EST on Saturday, December 20 at the Immanuel United Church of Christ with services starting at 1pm EST with Dr. T.J. Jenney officiating. Graveside services will be held at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville in the Spring of 2026. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ. Local arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Francesville.
CHESTER GLEN SMITH, SR.
RENSSELAER, IN - Chester Glen Smith, 91, died Friday, December 5, 2025 in Rensselaer, Indiana. He was born August 20, 1934 in Newton County, Indiana to Chester H. and Minnie Mary Smith. On July 28, 1967 in Rensselaer, he married Marie R. (Tiede) Whitaker. She died February 24, 2013. Glen was a veteran of the US Army and a longtime member and former Governor of the Rensselaer Moose Lodge #2272. In his younger years, Glen drove a stock car and was well known at the Jasper County Fairgrounds. He was an avid NASCAR and NHRA fan. Glen enjoyed saltwater and fresh water fishing, bowling in a league and watching women’s college basketball and softball. He is survived by three daughters: Crystal (Dale) Klingaman of Rensselaer, Sheila (Anthony) Sizemore of Okeechobee, Florida and Marcella (Frank) Basset of Plainfield, Indiana, one son, Chester Glen Smith, Jr. of Plainfield, thirteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one sister, Ruth (Forrest) Pettet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Minnie Mary and William M. Dowty, Sr., his father, Chester H. Smith, one daughter, Karen Reese and siblings: Mary Sayers, Doris Jean Dowty, Charles George Dowty, William “Tank” Dowty, Sylvia Edwards and Carey Wayne Dowty. Services were held Wednesday, December 10 at Frain Mortuary with Pastor Dennis Gutwein officiating. Burial was in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Rensselaer Moose Lodge #2272. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Francesville.

ENGLISH LAKE, IN - Geraldine P. “Gerry” Juron Chesak, 90, died November 28, 2025. She was born April 14, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. She married Allen Chesak and they were together for 40 years. Gerry was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and was active in the women’s sewing group, Piecemaker Quilts. She owned and operated an antique shop in Valparaiso, Indiana with her daughter, Patty and they also worked as hired clowns, something she loved doing. Gerry enjoyed trips to Ludington, Michigan and made many memories there. She is survived by two sons: Richard and Robert Chesak, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters: Karen and Patricia Chesak, her parents and all her siblings. Services were held Saturday, December 13 at the O’Donnell Funeral Home. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery in North Judson, Indiana. Arrangements were made by O’Donnell Funeral Home, Inc. in North Judson, Indiana.

PRETTY LAKE, WOLCOTTVILLE, IN - Marc Albert Peterson, 47, died Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. he was born July 24, 1978 in Misawa, Japan to Rex William and Sumi (Ohta) Peterson. On August 4, 2007 in Winamac, Indiana, he married Alison N. Schlabach. Marc was serving as the Information Technology director for LaGrange County. He loved playing video games and he was always eager to learn, troubleshoot and share his tech expertise. He enjoyed grilling and smoking meats, coaching his son in baseball and travel with his family. He is survived by his wife, Alison, his children: Kairi, Renji and Ryu Peterson, his mother, Sumi Peterson and one sister, Karen Peterson. He was preceded in death by his father, Rex. Services were held Monday, December 15 at the Frurip-May Funeral Home in Lagrange, Indiana with Ben Leu officiating. Memorials may by made to Ark Animal Rescue and Adoption.

STAR CITY, IN - Franklin Orville Shidler, 70, died Thursday, December 11, 2025 at his home. He was born April 26, 1955 to the late May A. (Linback) and Thomas N. Shidler II. On June 30, 1979 in Winamac, Indiana, he married Carla Anne Henry. Frank loved his family very much. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening vegetables which he loved sharing, raising cows, baling hay, cutting wood, mushroom hunting, fishing trips, farming, country drives and storytelling. He was a member of the Star City Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Carla, two daughters: Regina Anne (Stephen) Maltese of Carmel, Indiana and Rachelle Joan (Graham) Conklin of Fishers, Indiana, one son, Reese Franklin (Gretchen) Shidler of Star City, seven grandchildren and siblings: Iris A. “Ike” Simonin, Oren C. Shidler, Maxine K. “Mick” Smith, Dennis N. “Butch” (Judy) Shidler, Patricia “Trish” (Mark) Dahlenburg, Jerome “Jake” (Karen) Shidler and Lorinda “Lou” Grauel. He was preceded in death by siblings: Thomas N. “Duke” Shidler III, Deloris R. “Dee” Morgan, Ronald G. “Ron” Shidler, Garry A. Shidler and Frederick N. “Fred” Shidler. A celebration of life will take place on Thursday, December 18 at Frain Mortuary. Visitation will be from 3-7pm EST with services to be held at 7:30pm EST. Memorials may be made to the Helping Hands fund. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary in Winamac, Indiana.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2025 Russell Allen Schroeder, 74, of Bridgman, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Life will be held in early spring 2026, and family and friends will be notified when details are finalized. Born on August 28, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, Russell was a longtime resident of Starke County, Indiana. He graduated from LaCrosse High School in 1970 and later enjoyed a successful career with U.S. Steel, retiring after many years of dedicated service. Russell embraced retirement fully, spending 16 wonderful years pursuing his favorite pastimes-golf, bowling and shooting pool-and sharing laughter and stories over an ice-cold beer with friends at the local pub in North Judson. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond “Bud” Schroeder and Bernice Rosenbaum. He is survived by his son, Edward Schroeder, grandson Brenner Cruce, two great granddaughters: Lennan and Danny Cruce, two stepdaughters: Stacy Peterson and Candice Eisert and two granddaughters: Isabella Risner and Helena Goss. He also leaves behind seven siblings: brothers, Wayne and Raymond Schroeder and sisters: Donna Battesimo, Pepper Thom, Karen Bruder, Kathy Simonin and Diane McCroskey. Russell will be remembered for his easygoing nature, love of family, and the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Chester J. Potempa, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025 at the age of 96. A lifetime resident of San Pierre, Indiana, he passed away peacefully in his sleep at his family farm with his wife and children at his side. Chester was born on their farm in San Pierre on July 12, 1929 as the youngest of nine children of Frank and Mary (Soprich). He attended San Pierre High School, as he watched his Chester’s 96th Birthday July 12, 2025 three older brothers go off to fight during World War 2 and he stayed home to help his parents run the farm. On Sept. 5, 1953 he married Peggy Green at Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church in her neighboring hometown of Wheatfield, Indiana. He served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves from November 1950 until his honorable discharge in November 1959. In addition to his love of farming, Chester enjoyed a long career in truck transportation for 38 years at Jack Gray Transport until he retired in 1994. He was a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 142 and the American Legion Post 92 in North Judson, Indiana. Chester was honored with numerous safe driving honors and trophies throughout his decades on the roads and highways. Chester is survived by wife Peggy and their five children Carol Widner of Monterey, Indiana, Tom Potempa of San Pierre, David Potempa of Lima, Ohio, Pam Robinson of Mishawaka, Indiana and Philip Potempa of San Pierre as well as five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Frank (1951) and Mary (1986), all his older siblings Walter (1977), John (1982), Lillian (1994), Joseph (1995), Judy (2005), Lottie (2018), Wanda (2021) and Loretta (2020) as well as beloved daughter-in-law Linda (Tom), son-in-law Bill (Carol) and grandson Thomy. Chester loved to spend his time outside working in his expansive vegetable gardens, caring for the vast lawns surrounding the family farm and woodworking hobbies, especially making his custom birdhouses. He was a devoted member of All Saints Catholic Church in San Pierre. Service arrangements are being handled by O’Donnell Funeral Home, 302 Lane St. in North Judson, Indiana with a visitation period from 3 to 7 p.m. CST Friday, Dec. 19 and a Catholic Rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation continues at 10 a.m. CST Saturday, Dec. 20 with viewing at All Saints Catholic Church, 201 W. Eliza St. in San Pierre prior to the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. CST followed by a private interment at All Saints Catholic Cemetery in San Pierre.
Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.
