Main St., Goshen, offers a variety of assistance to members of the community, especially older adults. Meals on Wheels is one program offered at The Window that provides nutritious meals ďŹ ve days a week to seniors age 60 and older who are homebound or at nutrition risk in the Goshen area. A new route was added a year and a half ago, greatly increasing the number of clients from 35 to 65. Currently they are actively serving 51 people. While hot wheels used to be delivered daily, Meals on Wheels program members are now receiving ďŹ ve frozen meals that are all delivered Monday. With this new system, meals are prepared throughout the week and frozen. At 10 a.m. Monday, Lauren Unternahrer, Meals on Wheels/volunteer director, and a few volunteers begin packaging the meals for the drivers to pick up and deliver to clients. Typically each client gets ďŹ ve meals along with milk and a side. However, some opt for fewer meals. There are also particular options for diabetics and those with food allergies or who need low sodium. There is no added sodium in any of the meals so as to watch the carbohydrate and sugar intake of all clients. Right now there are seven routes with an average of 9 to 10 people on each route. While normally there are around 35 volunteers, there are currently only seven. Many of the volunteers for Meals on Wheels are also older adults. “Volunteers are deďŹ nitely our backbone,â€? Unternahrer emphasized. While maintaining all safety measures, volunteers are still encouraged to speak with clients when delivering meals since the interaction is something that is missed the most. Each day between 100 and 120 meals are made at The Continued on page 2
