Older, wiser mentors helping entrepreneurs %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU The mentors and consultants at Elkhart’s Service Corps of Retired Executives branch are invariably older than those they counsel. That’s kind of the point. They’re wiser, too, because of their experience in the business world. Elkhart SCORE “offers free, confidential advice to business owner(s) or anyone wanting to start a business or grow an existing business. The session is focused on what you want or need to discuss. Usual topics are collecting information about demand for your product or service, establishing a business, entity, financing, preparing a business plan, tax requirements, etc.” According to the national website, www.score.org, “With the nation’s largest network of volunteer expert business mentors, SCORE has helped more than 11 million entrepreneurs since 1964.”
SCORE of North Central Indiana, located at 418 S. Main St., Elkhart, provides face-to-face or remote mentoring and its website, northcentralindiana.score. org, offers a host of webinars, local workshops and courses; a blog page featuring several new entries per week; and an extensive online library of templates and other resources. “We have 31 volunteers, about two-thirds of them mentors, and we are always looking for more volunteers, including subject matter experts and others to help with community outreach and administrative duties,” said Doug Knapman, 64, chapter chair. Engaged in planning, mentoring, workshop presentations, community outreach and technical support, Knapman’s most gratifying experiences are “helping entrepreneurs solve problems and identify potential hurdles to success and helping those with an idea evaluate whether it is financially viable.” Knapman has some advice par-
ticularly for seniors. “You’re never too old to be an entrepreneur,” he said, “and even if you are still working you can contribute to helping your community. Even if you are not comfortable mentoring, you can contribute to the economic well-being of your community through SCORE.” In a broader sense, Knapman touted the organization’s benefit. “Whether you volunteer or utilize SCORE’s services, learning about others and getting to know your community in new ways strengthens the individuals, businesses and the community.” Tim Woods, 77, joined SCORE as a member and volunteer in March 2014 after 45 years of practicing law. He is a subject matter expert in law-related matters and said he got involved in SCORE “to give back to the community.” Mike Ronchetti is a volunteer certified business mentor on “small business topics including marketing, accounting, operations and planning.” He worked
for the Chicago western suburbs branch of SCORE for seven years before joining Elkhart’s chapter a year ago. His first involvement in SCORE was in 1998 as a client in Alaska. The 67 year old most enjoys “working closely with small groups of energetic, engaged people to find ways to make money solving a real problem or providing a delightful experience.” Ronchetti emphasized SCORE’s burgeoning importance for seniors, noting, “Seniors are a growing group of business startup owners and we supply the parts and fuel to make a problemsolving idea into a reality.” Paul Krizman, 65, a mentor who also assists with the development and presentation of workshops, said, “I believe one of the best ways to help people is by giving them a hand up instead of a hand out, and assisting them in starting their own business is a great way to accomplish that goal. “Being able to share the best
