We’ve all seen the videos on social media. It’s Christmas morning and the kids rush downstairs to open their presents. Mom and dad direct to one in particular, out of which pops an adorable puppy or kitten, ready for their new home. In most real-life instances, the decision has been thought out and planned. Unfortunately, in some cases, it hasn’t been, beyond purchasing the requisite bed, food, toys and collar for Fido or Fluffy from the local pet supply store. “Pets aren’t toys,” said Jordyn Caviggiola of the Fulton County Animal Center. “They’re not objects to give to someone who isn’t ready for the commitment. It’s a lifelong commitment to love them. Pets love their people more than they think and it can be really traumatic for them if they have to be given up. The same is true for non-traditional pets you get at the pet store, like reptiles and amphibians.” It’s not all doom and gloom, however, if you want to provide a new home for a dog, cat or other animal during the Christmas season. “On the plus side, I do love people giving people a new pet at the holidays, as long as they do their research and are prepared for the commitment,” added FCAC Executive Director Janet Showley. “I appreciate when families come in to the shelter together to select a dog or a cat. It should be a family decision on picking the right breed or particular animal for the family’s personality and lifestyle. Pets add to the holiday spirit of giving a homeless pet a second chance. It’s great to see the smile on the kids’ faces when the decide on a pet.” Showley does note that there can be pitfalls, as well, however. “People need to realize that a pet is a full-time obligation. They will still be there after the holidays, which certainly can be a good thing as long as they continue to get the care and attention they need and deserve. The financial and time commitment isn’t just during the week of Christmas. They can cost hundreds of dollars every month,” Regardless of whether a pet is chosen during the holidays or at some other point in the year, Showley encourages people to do their research on breeds. She said it’s important the new pet fits your lifestyle and will fit in with any other pets in your home. As an example, she said if you already have three senior cats in your family then it’s probably not a good idea to get a rambunctious and playful kitten. Another example is your family’s lifestyle. ways gone for work, school and extra-curricular activities that don’t bring you home until well into the evening, that needs to be taken into consideration when choosing to whether or not add a particular animal to the family’s schedule. “These are reasons we have a ‘foster to adopt’ program here at FCAC,” Showley said. “You can choose an animal to bring to your home for a two-week trial. It allows people to see if it is a good fit for them before an adoption.” Additionally, FCAC is one of more than 200 shelters in 40 states currently participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope” campaign. Through this Saturday, Dec. 20, any adoptable dog or cat at FCAC is only $25. “If now isn’t the right time for you to give a pet a home, you can help them in other ways,” added Showley. “You can donate supplies to the shelter to help with their care, or you can sponsor an adoption of one or more of the animals. Your donations are tax deductible.” As long as you are able to properly support and care for a pet, at the end of the day it’s worth it!” concluded Caviggiola.
