Nearly everyone loves cookies, especially those special recipe varieties that are pulled out only during the Christmas season. There’s nothing more delightful than seeing a plateful of festively decorated cookies, festooned with colorful frostings, sugars and candies.

The creation of these miniature pieces of art not only takes a lot of skill and creativity, but also plenty of time and commitment, all of which are often in short supply in today’s busy world.

Fortunately, Community Presbyterian Church in Rochester again has you covered during this Christmas season. After taking a five-year hiatus, the church will again host a cookie walk. For those unfamiliar, church families will be busily creating their favorite baked delights and offering them for sale during the public event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 11, at the church, located at 530 Jefferson St., Rochester.

They will have tables set up in the church, from which you can create your own cookie tin to share at your Christmas gathering or stash away in your pantry for your own guilty pleasure. Once you have made your selections, the plate is weighed and charged at $8 per pound. Additionally, there are some items for sale are individually priced.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Local resident shares his memories of life in Rochester %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Jimmie Tyler, Rochester, was the seventh sibling born into a family of 10.

When he was a child, his mother was a dishwasher at the Evergreen and his dad would sometimes send him to the restaurant to pick up lunch. “You could get four tenderloins back then for a $1,” he recollected with a smile.

The tenderloins from his early years must’ve made quite the impact. When the opportunity to sell his trucking company and purchase the Evergreen in 1973 became available, Tyler jumped at the chance.

“I got up at 4 a.m. every morning for 30 years,” he said. “I know it sounds funny, but I loved going to work. I have so many friends and memories from that time in my life.”

Tyler baked pies, ground his own hamburger from chuck and cut his own steaks daily to feed the droves of customers who came in. And, he made the same famous tenderloins he used to pick up as a kid.

“Those tenderloins traveled all over the United States,” he said.

Customers requested them while visiting and Tyler would double wrap and freeze them, so they could take them back in their luggage on the plane.

Tyler recalled, “You could get a T-bone, french fries, and a salad for $2.75, or two eggs, toast, and coffee for 60 cents.”

Tyler sold the Evergreen in 2002, but he continued to make the pies in the morning for the new owner and reminisce with customers afterward.

During his time at the Evergreen, Tyler began collecting ink pens. He had a wide array of pens from businesses, states,

and other countries from around the world. Customers would bring him pens to add to his collection.

At one point, Tyler had 20,000 pens.

His collection included a 1913 Parker with a mother of pearl stem and a solid rolled gold cap; an Eagle Pencil Company pen from 1887 made out of aluminum with a cork in it that held the ink; and a unique pen he referred to as his Al Capone pen.

“It shot a .25 caliber shell. You could cock it, put the shell in it and shoot it,” he said.

Incidentally, his neighbor was also a pen collector and the Indianapolis Star came to town and did a story on the pair, which in turn, prompted a visit from a pen collector.

Tyler was also the secretary at the Eagles lodge for 22 years.

He recently retired from that position and passed the reins to Doug Beller.

During his time as secretary, Tyler helped with the push for the new lodge located on Fourth Street, and is proud of all the funding and support the lodge has provided to the community

retary is the feedback received from the students, “The kids send back the nicest letters.”

“I couldn’t have done it by myself — the lodge or the restaurant — I needed the women, men, and the officers to make everything run smoothly. We all worked together. It was perfect,” he said.

He was recently honored with the Aerie Hall of Fame award from the Eagles for his years of service.

Tyler still visits the lodge two or three days a week, and when the couple’s four children are in town, they dine at the Evergreen.

He also served on the water board for 23 years, and when time allows, he and his wife Betty enjoy going to the boat together for dinner and a shot at becoming Rochester’s next big casino winners.

Bell Aircraft Museum sponsoring craft show Bell Aircraft Museum is sponsoring a craft show Dec. 4 during the Mentone Christmas open house. All proceeds from the craft show goes to the Bell Aircraft Museum.

Cast iron pan tips Good neighbors: My care for my iron fry pan I’ve used for 60 years. Take it and scrub very good with a stainless scrubber. Dry. Put on low heat and put a quarter size bacon grease in it to melt. I have bacon grease in a small glass jar in the fridge to fry eggs, potatoes, etc. Makes great taste. For bacon grease, fry strips of bacon and save the drippings.

Shepherd’s pie Good neighbors: For the good neighbor wanting a recipe for shepherd’s pie. I found this one in a 1927 cookbook. Chop 1 pound of cooked meat cold.

Mix in 2 tablespoons bread crumbs, 1 chopped onion, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, 1 cup cold gravy, salt and pepper to taste, 2 tablespoons butter, 1/2 teaspoon powdered dry sage, 1 tablespoon catsup.

Mix well and turn into baking dish and cover with thick layer of seasoned mashed potatoes. Brush top with beaten egg and dot with pieces of butter and bake for 30 minutes.

Shepherd’s pie: Prepare mashed potatoes and set aside. Brown 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef with onions, then mix with one can of Campbell’s tomato soup (no water added). Add one drained can corn and one drained can of drain green beans. Mix well, place in deep casserole bowl, spread mashed potatoes on top, bake at 325 for half an hour, slice thick wedges of cheddar cheese place on top and cook until cheese is melted. Enjoy!

“Superintendent Jana Vance approached local churches this fall and asked them to consider ways to help financially support the backpack program,” said Ashley Chipps, the church’s mission and outreach chairperson. “We donated the prize money that we won at the chamber’s Chili Cook-off in October and also will be donating all the money from the cookie walk.”

The backpack program through the schools offers food for students in need to take home during weekends or holiday breaks, according to Chipps. Additionally, she said Vance told her a food pantry is open to families who might be going through a rough time or are in particular need.

Chipps said prior to 2016, which was the last year for the event, the church had been doing a cookie

walk for as long as she could remember.

“We’re a smaller church with an older congregation, and it was becoming overwhelming,” she said of the decision to discontinue the event a half-decade ago. “We were baking a lot and not getting a great turnout. After the event, we were donating the cookies to various organizations in the community, which was great, but it defeated our purpose of raising money for an organization in the community.”

She said after the chili cookoff, several church members approached her about what else the church could do to raise money.

Many were interested in possibly reinstating the cookie walk.

“It’s always something we enjoyed doing,” said Chipps. “We have a large kitchen at the church and some ladies will use it for their baking. We ask that they bake 6-8 dozen cookies each, although many

will make much more in several varieties.

“We missed doing this,” she said.

“We’re looking forward to getting back into the kitchen and baking.

We suggest people come early for the best selection. Our goal is to sell out early. We know that quite a few people purchase goodies from the cookie walk to gift to others, so this year we’ll provide festive containers so they will be gift ready.

“We’re all looking forward to seeing familiar faces. Over the years many community members made this a part of their family Christmas traditions. I can think of one family in particular that comes each year with three generations.

I personally enjoy participating because it gets my kids involved.

They help from start to finish with baking, setting up, working the day of, and cleaning up. They get to serve our church and community and have fun.”

Lanty E. Armstrong, 70, Rochester, passed away at 11:44 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021, at his residence.

On July 25, 1951, Lanty Edwin was born in Logansport to John D. and Helen L. Severns Armstrong. He graduated from Rossville High School and later earned a BS from Purdue in agriculture /$17< ( mechanization in 1974. $5067521* Lanty and Shawnee Ann Overmyer were married June 19, 1977, in Richland Center United Methodist Church. They shared 44 years of life’s adventures. Their union produced a daughter, Lannette, and a son, Lanty II “Spud.” The family tree has continued to grow with the blessings of two grandchildren.

A lifelong farmer with a passion for agriculture, Lanty farmed for Wayne Draper and later for Fred Zellers. There was nothing better than driving his shiny red Case-International Harvester tractor while chewing on root beer barrels. He was also delighted to devour Ju-Ju’s.

To relax, Lanty was an avid TV buff watching “History,” “Discovery” and “RFD” channels. His favorite shows were “Machinery Pete,” the “Gold Rush” and auction shows. He enjoyed snacking on black licorice or dark chocolate while watching farm equipment auctions.

Returning to his roots, Lanty took the family camping near Monticello’s Lake Freeman at White Oaks on the Lake. This is where many memories were made. He and Shawnee traveled annually to Rantoul, Ill., proud home of the Half Century of Progress Show. He rarely missed a spring plow day.

Left to cherish the memories of Lanty are his wife, Shawnee; daughter, Lannette Kramer and husband Daniel of Robinson, Ill.; son, Spud Armstrong and wife Molly of Rochester; two granddaughters, Lindy Irene Armstrong and Jolene Lyn Armstrong; sister, Debra Fulwider and husband Bob of Fort Myers, Fla.; brother, Daniel Armstrong of Kokomo; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Lanty in death are his parents and his canine companion, Yippe, the border collie.

A celebration of the life of Lanty E. Armstrong was held at 10 a.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 23, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Pastor Steve Hartman officiated. Friends visited with the family from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows conducted a memorial service at 6:45 p.m. Monday. Interment was in the Richland Center IOOF Cemetery.

Marjorie May Bounsall Former Nurse Marjorie May Bounsall, 84, Rochester, passed away at 10:16 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021, at her son’s residence in Sylvan Lake, Mich.

She was born May 15, 1937, in Mishawaka, the daughter of Harry and Dorothy (Wilson) Miller. On June 6, 1959, in Mishawaka, she married Richard Allen Bounsall. He preceded her in death 0$5-25,( 0 Nov. 1, 2018. %2816$// Marge graduated from Indiana University School of Nursing in 1958. She had worked at various hospitals and doctor’s offices in Indianapolis, Wabash, Columbus, Ligonier and Mattoon, Ill., before moving to Rochester in 1987. Upon arrival in Rochester, she started working at Argos Medical Clinic. She and her husband operated Bounsall’s Shoe Store in Rochester until her retirement in 1999.

Marge had been a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Fulton County Choral Melody Makers, Delta Theta Tau Sorority and the Rochester Lions Club. Along with her husband, she enjoyed traveling, being season tickets holders to Notre Dame women’s basketball games, attending theater productions and attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and activities.

Sharon K. Ringle, 81, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away Friday evening, Nov. 26, 2021.

Born in Argos June 9, 1940, Sharon Kay McGowen was a treasured daughter of Harold and Margaret Stults McGowen. Growing up in the Argos community, she shared her childhood 6+$521 . with a sister, Beverly, and two brothers, Ronnie 5,1*/( and Danny. In 1958, she graduated with her class from Argos High School.

On Nov. 14, 1958, Sharon K. McGowen married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Gary O. Ringle, at the Richland Center Church parsonage. They shared 63 years of life’s adventures. From their union came a handsome son, John. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of five grandchildren.

With diverse interests, Sharon was accomplished in many realms. For many years, she worked as a member of the cafeteria staff at Rochester High School, making certain the Zebras were well fed. She was a skilled manager of their family’s Quality Starr Motors. Most recently, Sharon was the goodwill ambassador of Rochester Ford, greeting customers and making them feel at home.

She and Gary are devoted members of The Cross. To relax, she enjoyed gospel music, especially performed by Elvis.

In the early years as an adult, Sharon enjoyed a small herd of fine Arabian horses that she raised as pets, but were shown by family and close friends ascending to championship realms. She took great pride in cheering John on when he raced moto-cross.

Nothing was more important to Grandma Sharon than being with family. She loved following the progress of her grands with their school activities and sporting events. She also did some coaching in preparation for their spelling bees. The holidays and celebrating special family occasions were paramount in her life as being with family is the best.

Left to cherish Sharon’s memory are her husband, Gary, at home; a son, John Ringle and wife Tisha of Rochester; five grandchildren, Jared Ringle, Katie Tyler, Morgan Tyler, twins Emily Tyler and Kelsey Tyler; a sister, Beverly Howton of South Bend; special family members, Jerry and Helen Weese; many nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceding Sharon in death are her parents and brothers, Ronnie McGowen and Danny McGowen.

Jeanine Rose Shelburne Devoted Prayer Warrior Jeanine (Jeanie) Rose Shelburne, 72, Rochester, passed away Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester.

She was born Sept. 18, 1949, to Leonard Jewell and Mary Kathryn (Boring) Wix in Elwood, Ind. She was proposed to in marriage in 1967 by -($1,1( 526( her husband of 53 years at his senior prom. On 6+(/%851( Oct. 5, 1968, they were married at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in HomePlace, Ind. Jeanie and her husband, Rev. Jeffery Shelburne, traveled via motorhome as evangelists and song evangelists for more than 35 years. They ministered in many revivals and camp meetings across the Midwest and southern United States.

Jeanie was always considered an angel with an angelic voice by all who heard her sing. She was a devoted prayer warrior and ministered to many through her prayers. Jeanie and Jeff were members of the Indiana Gospel Music Association and the Indiana Gospel Music Festival. Jeanie was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flowers each year. She was a member of the Rochester Garden Club for many years.

She is survived by her husband, Jeffery Shelburne; sons, Andy Joseph Shelburne and Bradley Moses Shelburne; grandsons, Devon Ashe Shelburne and Wesley Joseph Shelburne; sisters, Kathy (Sonny) Castor and Nancy Stewart; and brother, Fred (Susan) Wix. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Rebecca Jo Shelburne, in 1973; brother, Michael Wix; and sister, Linda Wix. Department of Health partners with Purdue University Indiana Department of Health has partnered with Purdue University on a new initiative that aims to ensure Hoosiers have better access to the resources they need to improve their health.

The two-year Indiana Healthy Opportunities for People Everywhere initiative will deploy teams across the state to facilitate community-level conversations, resulting in strategies to address the factors that prevent people from living their healthiest lives. The work will examine longstanding risk factors, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Hoosiers’ health.

The effort is being funded by a $34.8 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Chronic disease, food insecurity, opioids, obesity and smoking were challenges for Indiana before the pandemic, and the last two years of isolation and treatment delays have only made them worse,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG. “As we amplify pandemic recovery efforts, it’s more important than ever to understand and respond to the factors that make it difficult for people to get healthy and stay healthy, such as limited access to healthcare, affordable housing, transportation, childcare, and safe and secure employment. I-HOPE will help us do that.”

During the two-year project, the teams deployed by Purdue Healthcare Advisors at the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering will collaborate with I-HOPE partners working on projects statewide, as well as with 30 Indiana counties that have been most impacted by the pandemic. The initial focus areas will include Cass, Daviess, Elkhart, Lake and Wayne counties, then will expand to Adams, Allen, Blackford, Clark, Clinton, Delaware, Fayette, Grant, Jackson, Jay, Jefferson, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Madison, Marshall, Noble, Orange, Ripley, Scott, St. Joseph, Sullivan, Switzerland, Tipton, Vanderburgh and Vigo counties.

The I-HOPE initiative is inde-

pendent of, but will complement, the work of the Governor’s Public Health Commission, established in August to examine Indiana’s public health infrastructure.

The 15-member commission is charged with analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of

Indiana’s current public health system and identifying ways to improve funding and equitable delivery of public health services in the future, with a focus on legislation.

Poultry products donated to Hoosiers this year Recently, Gov. Eric Holcomb, Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Bruce Kettler recognized the generosity of Indiana’s poultry producers at the 74th annual Indiana state poultry recognition event hosted at the Indiana Statehouse. During the past year, Indiana poultry farmers have donated nearly 100 tons or 200,000 pounds of poultry products to Hoosiers in need.

“Indiana’s agriculture industry is making strong economic impacts across the state, nationally and across the globe and that is due in part to Hoosier poultry producers,” said Holcomb. “As we enter the holiday season, let us all recognize the contributions Hoosier farmers make in ensuring our plates are full of a variety of nutritious foods, and, of course, all of our favorite seasonal treats.”

For decades, Indiana’s poultry producers have been working to address food insecurity in their local communities by providing protein to food banks across the state. Some of the main products that were donated during the course of this year include eggs, chicken, duck and turkey.

The strength of Indiana’s poultry sector was also recognized during the ceremony as Indiana is one of the top poultry producing states in the country.

According to the USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service, Indiana ranks No. 1 in duck production, No. 2 in egg production, No. 4 in turkey production and is home to high quality broiler chicken production as well.

The poultry industry is a substantial economic driver for the state contributing more than $12 billion in total economic activity. Additionally, this sector employs more than 12,000 Hoosiers.

“Each year I look forward to celebrating and honoring the generosity of our Hoosier poultry producers,” Crouch said.

“There is nothing more heartwarming than Hoosiers helping Hoosiers, especially around the holiday season.”

Indiana State Poultry Association members continually give back to their local communities throughout the year. According to ISPA president Becky Joniskan, during the last 12 months members have contributed more than seven million eggs to their local communities.

“This event is a testament to the character, generosity, and strength of our industry,” said Joniskan. “I am so grateful to work alongside such exceptional poultry farmers and processors who keep the wholesomeness of their products and their responsibilities to their communities top of mind.”

Today’s ceremony marks an annual tradition that dates back to the late 1940s. Organized by ISPA, one of the oldest poultry organizations in the nation, it was designed to recognize the strength of Indiana’s poultry industry, as well as the annual donations made by its members, who are responsible for more than 95% of the chicken, duck, turkey and eggs produced in Indiana.

had venerated King Uzziah. For 52 years, Uzziah had led Judah in a program of peace and prosperity. It was an era of expansion and achievement. It was unfortunate the king had rebelled against the word of God and died a leper (2 Kings 15:1-7; 2 Chronicles 26).

Isaiah realized though the nation had prospered materially, it was in terrible condition spiritually.

The economic growth and temporary peace were a veneer that covered a nation with a wicked heart. What was going to happen to Judah?

God lifted Isaiah’s eyes from himself and his people to the throne of heaven. There might be confusion and unrest on earth, but there was perfect peace in heaven: God was seated in majestic power and glory. People on earth might be recalling the shame of Uzziah’s death as a leper, but there was no shame or shadow of failure in heaven.

Rather, the seraphim were saying, “Holy, holy, holy.” Jehovah is the great God of heaven.

John 12:38-41 informs us Isaiah saw Jesus Christ in his glory.

He was on the throne of heaven being praised by the seraphim.

His royal robe filled the heavenly temple, and the house was filled with the smoke of his anger against sin (Psalm 80:4). His angelic creatures, the seraphim (“fiery ones”), praised him for his holiness and His glory. “The whole earth is full of His glory.” Isaiah did not see much glory that day, nor do we see it today.

Rather, it seems the whole earth is “filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11). We see events from a human perspective; the angels see them from God’s viewpoint. One day when Jesus reigns, the whole earth shall be full of his glory (see Numbers 14:21, Psalm 72:19, and Habakkuk 2:14). See also Isaiah 11:9. “Lord of hosts” is Isaiah’s favorite name for God; he uses it at least 65 times. “Lord of the armies” is what it means. The prophet also calls God “the Holy One of Israel” at least 30 times.

Jehovah is the God of holy warfare, the God who opposes sin and defeats the enemy. Isaiah needed to realize this fact in a day when Judah appeared to be defeated.

This is a good practical lesson for Christians today: when the day is dark, lift your eyes to heaven and see Jesus Christ on the throne. “The Lord is in his holy temple.”

What is the difference between COVID-19 vaccines? %\ +$55< :(%% :HEE·V )DPLO\ 3KDUPDF\ Editor’s note: This is the first in a regular series in which we will ask Dr. Harry Webb of Webb’s Family Pharmacy a health-related question.

What are the differences between the Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines?

The first vaccine approved in the United States was the Pfizer mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccine. It is now fully FDA approved in all patients aged 12 and older. It is marketed under the brand name Comirnaty.

Messenger RNA vaccines deliver instructions to the cell to make a tiny protein on the surface of the cell that resembles the spike protein the COVID-19 virus has on its outer surface.

This spike the vaccine creates does nothing, and you cannot get COVID-19 from this protein segment. The spike protein found on the actual coronavirus is how the virus attaches to the cell and starts the infection.

Once your immune cells see this foreign protein, they create antibodies to destroy the protein.

These antibodies will also attack the COVID-19 virus if you

are exposed to the virus. And that’s how it helps prevent serious infection if you are exposed.

Scientists have been working on mRNA technology since the 1970s. The advantage of mRNA vaccines is they don’t have to be cultured or grown to produce the vaccine. The challenge has been to develop the carrier to deliver the delicate mRNA to the cells before the body destroys it. This new development will be used in many vaccines in the future and possibly cancer treatments.

Last month Pfizer also received emergency use authorization for their pediatric version of the vaccine. It can be given to children ages 5-11.

Moderna is also a mRNA vaccine and works very similar to the Pfizer vaccine. It has emergency use authorization for all patients 18+ years old. They both have been proven to be safe and effective. Both require two vaccinations to reach 95% protection. Immune response to any disease naturally diminishes with time.

Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) vaccine uses a more traditional method of delivering the instructions to the cell. Instead of using mRNA, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine uses a disabled

adenovirus to deliver the instructions to a few of your cells to also grow spike proteins, like the other two vaccines. This adenovirus carrier is not related to the coronavirus. It is a completely different virus. This vaccine was initially promoted as a “one and done” vaccine. And it helps patients prevent infection approximately 70% of the time.

It has emergency use authorization for all patients 18+ years old.

Since these vaccines were introduced, the virus has mutated, and the prevalent Delta variant is much more contagious than the strains that were around a year ago. Coming in close contact with a person who has an active infection can overwhelm your immune system at the point of attack. Good immunity requires multiple layers of antibodies and by getting an additional dose of any of these vaccines boosts your immune system. A robust immune system, strengthened by an additional dose of your chosen vaccine is more effective at blocking the Delta variant infection.

It is recommended all vaccinated individuals consider an additional dose. With Pfizer the third dose is like the first two

and it is given six months after the second dose.

Moderna booster is half strength, and it is also given six months after the second dose.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine booster is full dose given two months after the first dose.

People are allowed to mix and match their vaccine based on availability, adverse reactions or personal preferences. Many vaccines used today are given in multiple doses to maximize your immunity — for example the Polio and pneumonia vaccine. It is likely these additional COVID-19 vaccine doses may be simply part of the vaccine treatment guidance.

As of November 2021, more than 7.8 billion doses of these vaccines have been given worldwide. These vaccines are proven to be extremely effective. Although no vaccine is without possible side effects, most are minor. This vaccine is only in your body for about four days before your body destroys it.

Your body creates an immune response and then your immune system wipes it out. Potential adverse effects of a COVID-19 infection are many times greater than the vaccine side effects and can trigger long term com-

Studies show people with a previous COVID-19 infections are five times more likely to get a second COVID-19 infection than a vaccinated person. The key with these vaccines is their ability to create immunity to the virus’s spike protein. It is difficult to know if a naturally acquired immunity from previous COVID-19 infection targets spike protein. This unknown make variants more likely to cause a second infection. I strongly recommend everyone age 5 and older get fully vaccinated and, in most situations, get a booster dose when it is recommended.

Junior Achievement seeks event participants and sponsors Junior Achievement serving Fulton County has a couple of upcoming sponsorship opportunities for you or your business to support area youth.

First, gather up a team of five members to take a strike toward educating youth on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. The annual Play 4JA Bowling outing will take place Sunday, Feb. 27, at Country Lanes, 1988 N. Old US 31, Rochester.

Event sponsorship is $500, which includes a name/logo lane sponsorship, as well as a team entry of five bowlers including drinks and pizza. Alternatively, lane sponsorships are available for $1,000. Team entries of five bowlers are $40 plus a donation goal of $350.

The annual Junior Achievement Golf Classic will take place Friday, June 10, at Round Barn Golf Course in Rochester. Teams of four can enjoy a relaxing lunch prior to hitting the course for a friendly game of golf, which will include a few competitions along the way. There will be proximity

holes for participants to join in and golf towels for the day’s winning team.

Golf event sponsorship is $400 and includes name/logo on one hole, one golf cart and one team entry. Hole sponsorship is $100, car sponsorship is $60, team entry for four is $250 and individual player entry is $40.

ISP issues 40 traffic citations in pre-Thanksgiving patrol On Wednesday, Nov. 24, troopers working from the Indiana State Police Peru Post conducted a saturation patrol targeting aggressive and impaired drivers in Miami, Wabash, Cass, Fulton, Grant and Howard counties.

During the patrol, officers concentrated their enforcement efforts on the heavily traveled roads of I-69, US 31, SR 3 and US 24. In the patrol, troopers issued

40 traffic citations and 118 written warnings. Thirty-one of the citations were for speeding. They also made five criminal arrests and arrested one impaired driver.

The attraction of the slow cooker is the “set it and forget it” mentality. Occasionally this hands-off approach can still result in underdone vegetables and overdone meat.

Layering within the slow cooker does make a difference in the success of a dish. The heating elements are on the bottom and sides of a slow-cooker so tougher vegetables should be placed on the bottom and up the sides.

Tougher vegetables include potatoes, turnips, parsnips, carrots, beets, and winter squash. The next layer can include not-sotough vegetables such as celery, fennel, green beans and bell peppers. Any meat and/or poultry should be placed above hearty vegetable to prevent overcooking.

This also allows the meat juices drip down and flavor the entire pot. Defrost meat or poultry in the refrigerator and cut into smaller pieces before putting in the slow cooker for more even cooking. The quick-cooking, more delicate, vegetables and canned beans need to be placed on top to preserve texture and individual flavors. Deli-

cate vegetables include zucchini, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, and peas. Last but not least, do not forget to incorporate liquid into the mix. The liquid like water, broth or juice is used to prevent food from sticking.

Sautee fresh garlic, onion, or ground meat first before adding them to the slow cooker. This allows the extra fat from ground beef to be removed and the powerful flavors of garlic and onion to be more available. Hearty herbs like rosemary and thyme also make great toppers to food in the slow cooker. As the sun streams in from a window and the room warms up, you find yourself dozing off as your body switches metabolic priorities and now puts you into digestive mode. Multiple chemicals from the digestive process enter the blood stream and now the body wants to spend time digesting and not working.

Life is so different for cattle than ours. While we spend less than an hour eating, a ruminant animal such as cattle, sheep and goats spend about four hours. The first place our food goes is into the stomach. It makes up about 17% of our digestive capacity while many forage-consuming animals have a lead digestive organ called the rumen that makes up around 70% of its digestive tract.

After spending four hours of consuming a forage-based diet to fill that large rumen, there isn’t time to sleep but still a chance for the body to rest. For about the next four hours it is cud-chewing time. In this process a ball of previously consumed forage is regurgitated or pushed back up into the mouth to be rechewed. During this process the long forage fibers are broken down to smaller more digestible pieces that will again be swallowed and are now more available to the protozoa, bacteria, and fungi that live inside the rumen. They do the actual digestion.

Standing by an animal that is in the cud-chewing mode can be a stinky experience. One of the chemical offshoots of this process is methane. On my farm you could be standing face to face with a goat, scratching its neck when it decides it is time, during this non-stressful event, to chew

0$5. .(3/(5 its cud and then the foul breath emanates from its mouth. Some animals smell worse than others as the various digestive organisms in their guts may be different from others. Also, what they have eaten will also affect the resulting smell as well as genetic difference between animals.

When you hear ruminant animals are a contributor to global warming due to their methane emissions, it is not what is going out their back end but what is coming out the front that is mostly the problem. Only about 5% of the methane escapes from the rear.

There is a lot of finger-pointing and dueling statistics going on concerning global warming and ruminant animals. There are researchers trying different means to reduce the methane emissions including feed additives, genetics, and diet changes. For example, cattle on corn silage produces more methane than those on alfalfa silage.

The animals on my place show little concern for all this science.

While all the humans discuss, argue, debate and frankly, “chew the cud” on this environmental issue, it is now time to spend the next four hours sleeping, only for them to wake up and start the grazing cycle all over again.

The University of Notre Dame’s eagle cam is back, livestreaming video of the eagles in their huge nest atop a tree at St. Patrick’s

County Park. The old eagle camera broke down and stopped feeding video this spring after the eggs had hatched.

Notre Dame researchers published their findings this year after studying the types of prey the eagles bring to the nest, as reported in The Tribune’s Outdoor Adventures column Aug. 25.

Graduate students had combed through more than 26,000 photos of the eagles’ nest that were shot in the spring of 2018.

Another new feature, Peters said, is the overhead video includes a wider view of the nest, so you can see the eagles fly in or sit on a nearby branch.

He said activity is expected to ramp up in and after December as the eagles build up their nest in preparation for egg laying, which typically is in late February.

The camera was intentionally installed in the time between nesting seasons, to avoid disrupting the eagle family.
