Now that Halloween is behind us, the holiday season is officially here. Thanksgiving is only three weeks away, but for many the countdown to Christmas already has begun.

Everyone here at the Shopping Guide News of Fulton County is ready to help with your Christmas shopping plans as we prepare to embark on our eighth annual Christmas Bucks promotion.

Once again, the Shopping Guide is teaming with local merchants to bring extra holiday cheer to the community through the Christmas Bucks contest. The giveaway has now become a much anticipated annual favorite in Fulton County, offering Christmas spending scrip to stretch your gift giving budget.

Beginning with this edition of the paper, the promotion will run for three consecutive weeks. Entry forms will be found in the Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 issue. Cut out the entry forms, fill out the slips and deposit them in the Christmas Bucks boxes in the businesses sponsoring the promotion, as printed on each individual entry form. Entry forms are also available at participating merchants.

Forms must be placed in the stores’ Christmas Bucks boxes no later than noon Friday, Nov. 19. No purchase is necessary and you do not need to be present to win. You must, however, be at least 18 years old to enter.

You can enter each time you visit the store, but only one coupon is allowed per visit. Ballot stuffers will be disqualified. No mail-in entries will be accepted. Employees of each business are not eligible to enter at their place of business.

New director enjoys interacting with seniors in community %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Doug Beller has been working with the Fulton County Community Center for nearly five years.

After retiring from AirVac, he began driving part-time for Fulton County Transpo, which gave him insight into the daily operations at the community center. In December 2020, a

position became available for executive director of the Senior Center, which also is housed at the community center, so Beller applied.

“All of my previous jobs were in management,” he said. “It was a good fit, plus I knew how Transpo operated.”

Beller’s responsibilities primarily are linked to creating the annual budget for Transpo and working with INDOT, since

it’s a government funded program. Part of the fiscal responsibilities also include applying for grants through United Way and Northern Indiana Community Foundation to help cover any additional costs outside of the Transpo budget and funding for the Council on Aging.

The Council on Aging covers the senior activities that take place at the center. Activities include chair volleyball, bakery bingo, scheduled games and live entertainment. Additionally, they offer free lunch to anyone age 60 and over.

Chair volleyball is a newer activity offered at the center.

Beller said, “Initially it was a hard sell, but once they started, they nearly fight each other to get on the court.”

“It’s a lot of fun. Many of the seniors that come in I knew as a driver, and I got to see them every day,” Beller said. “It’s nice to see them at the senior center having fun and it gives me a chance to chit chat with them.

“The community center is a great gathering place for the seniors. A lot of them are home bound, so Transpo is great for that. And the center gives them a chance to visit with their friends and stay active.

It’s nice to see them happy.

That’s pretty much what it’s all about.”

Beller also is the secretary of the Eagles Lodge. He has been a member for 27 years and became the secretary in June. His responsibilities as secretary include making deposits, writing checks and paying the bills.

Beller enjoys the teamwork involved with the other Eagle board members of trying to attract new, younger members and the planning of events.

They recently added new pool tables and a new sound system, and have started to have guest nights to encourage new sign ups.

“I enjoy getting to know the members on a more personal level,” he said. Since he has to interact with them more frequently in his position as secretary, he has the opportunity to be more than just

Beller and his wife, Yvonne, also are members of the VFW, American Legion, the Moose and Elks. They enjoy socializing, having dinner and participating in the drawings and entertainment the clubs offer.

As a Manitou Lake resident, he also enjoys fishing for bluegill off his pier in his free time.

He’s made friends with a group of mallards that are accus-

tomed to being fed by Beller. “If I don’t have food out there, they come looking for me,” he said.

One of them went as far as to knock on his door.

“They come swimming up whenever they see me,” Beller said. “They jump up on the seawall and walk around until they get their food. Last year I had four mallards that would eat out of my hand. They’re a lot of fun.”

Mobile food pantry at Mill Creek Church Food Finders Food Bank Mobile Pantry will be distributing food, including fresh produce, an assortment of frozen items, essential non-perishable items and breads to people in need in the Rochester area. It will take place at Mill Creek Church, 1336 N. SR 25, Rochester.

This will be a drive-thru distribution. Organizers ask all clients remain in their vehicles at all times and no one arrives prior to noon.

Food distribution starts at 1 p.m.

OBITUARIES Dennis Dee Fulton

Lifelong Machinist

Dennis Dee Fulton, 64, Bourbon, passed away peacefully at 11:55 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021, at the Center for Hospice in Mishawaka.

Dennis was born Jan. 6, 1957, to Arthur and Shirley Fulton in Rochester. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1975. Acknowledging he had a knack for working with his hands, Dennis '(11,6 '(( went on to be a lifelong machinist and worked in )8/721 the foundry for most of his days.

In April 1982, Dennis married Karen MacLain (Liedtky) and resided in Plymouth. They had a daughter, Brooke, and a son, Mason.

In May 1994, Dennis and Karen divorced. Dennis would later move to Bourbon and marry Debra Hawkins (Fulton) in June 2000. Dennis and Debbie were married for 16 years before they went their separate ways.

Dennis enjoyed his family and friends. He loved running, biking, canoeing, hiking, fishing, gardening and attending auctions. If there was an adventure to be had, he was up for the challenge. His crazy, contagious laugh and warm-hearted smile is one sure to be missed.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Shirley Fulton; and his brother-in-law, Glenn Buttrum Sr. He is survived by his daughter, Brooke (Josh) Carlton, and their children, Chloe, Payton and Tyler of Plymouth; as well as his son, Mason (Rebecca) Fulton, and their children, Logan, Allison and Gracelynn of Muncie. He is also survived by his two brothers, Alan (Vicki) Fulton of Rochester and David (Linda) Fulton of Warsaw; and three sisters, Vicki (Jim) Onstott of Rochester, Ronna (Ralph) Graham of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and Jill Buttrum of Purdy, Mo.; both of his ex-wives to whom he remained close with, Karen Liedtky and her other two children, Taylor Fulton and Erin Liedtky of Plymouth, and Debra Fulton and her son, Christopher Hawkins, of Bourbon; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services celebrating the life of Dennis D. Fulton, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Zartman Home Health Caregiver

Ruth Zartman, 90, Rochester, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, at Wampler’s Senior Home, Bourbon.

She was born Feb. 5, 1931, in Benton County, Tenn., the daughter of Jessie and Lucille (Rayborn) Allen. On June 4, 1946, in Corinth, Miss., she married A. Garfield Mills. He preceded her in death April 587+ =$570$1 4, 1971. On June 28, 1974, in Michigantown, she married Kenneth Zartman and he preceded her in death Sept. 2, 2004.

Over the years, Ruth had worked on the family farm, helped operate the Cozy Corner Café with her husband in Fulton, was employed by the Rochester Community Schools and, later in life, served as a home health caregiver. She was a member of Rochester Church of the Nazarene and had participated in several short-term mission trips to foreign countries and numerous trips to volunteer at Native American schools in New Mexico and Arizona. She had been an avid traveler, visiting all 50 states and traveling to five continents.

Survivors include her daughters, Ann (Bruce) Beehler, Kewanna, and Jan (David) Dittman, Portageville, Mo.; grandchildren, Todd (Paula) Beehler, Rochester, Troy (Shoda) Beehler, Rochester, Traci (Tom) Coursey, Crawfordsville, Megan (Chris) Murphy, Peachtree City, Ga., Kelly (Kevin) Guthrie, Portageville, Mo., and Erin (Kevin) Clemons, Midland, Mich., 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Zelma Gross, Paris, Tenn.; brothers, Wayne (Jenna) Allen, Paris, Tenn., and Jim (Vivian) Allen, Big Sandy, Tenn.; and sister-in-law, Jemmie Allen, Big Sandy, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Willie Mae French, Kathy Walter, Betty Mathis and Wanda Hartley; and brothers, Ray Allen and Roy Allen.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, with Pastor Don Meyer officiating. Friends called from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, and one hour prior to service Monday at the funeral home. Burial was in Kewanna IOOF Cemetery.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Day event in Rochester To help connect all of those impacted by suicide in Fulton County, a community of event partners is hosting International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Fulton-Liberty Lions Club had annual Halloween Costume Contest Oct. 30

Although this year’s event was limited due to COVID it still garnered a large turnout. Many merchants ran out of candy before the long line of trick-or-treaters ended.

Even though it rained most of the time, hundreds of all ages donned costumes to enjoy this annual event.

Rochester native pursues music career in Flordia Kate Karter has loved singing and writing songs since she was very young. She was born and raised in Rochester.

She moved to Florida this past year at age 17 to pursue her singing career. She just released her first single she wrote.

“Come Home” was produce by Mainframe Studios in Florida.

They have produced music for Dolly Parton, Sara Evans, Waylon Jennings, Little Big Town and Brad Paisley. Bobby Randall, formerly of Sawyer Brown and the Confederate Railroad, was the guitarist on her new single.

Karter sings regularly on the Orange Blossom Opry and she is an opener for Linda Davis in November. Karter performed regularly at Chase Center in Logansport before she moved to Florida.

Her parents are Thad and Laura Stewart of Rochester.

Her song “Come Home” is available on iTunes and YouTube.

FCCF provides grant for pickleball court construction Fulton County Community Foundation recently provided a $20,000 grant to help with the construction of the Rochester pickleball courts.

This grant will help with the installation of four pickleball courts that will be located near the Rochester City Pool.

The pickleball courts projects has received community support through organizational donations and community fundraising.

Project organizers are collaborating with the Rochester Parks Department as well as local businesses and contractors to help with the construction process. The courts are scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2022. After that, the Rochester Parks Department will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the courts.

The Optimist Club of Rochester completed another successful pumpkin project this year on Saturday, October 23, thanks to the generous support of our effort by people in our community. My hope is in a person, the Lord Jesus Christ — connecting me with God himself. You and I can have hope and know we are going to heaven!

The writer of Hebrews chapter 6 closes this chapter with as solid a passage on eternal security as we will find anywhere in the Bible. He points, first of all, to their own lives (Hebrews 6:10-12) and reminds them they had given every evidence of being true Christians. We find faith, hope, and love described in these three verses, and these traits are the characteristics of true believers (1 Thessalonians 1:3; Romans 5:1-5). But he cautions them in Hebrews 6:12 not to be “dull of hearing” (or “slothful,” same word as in Hebrews 5:11). God has given his promises; we need only exercise faith and patience to re-

He then uses Abraham as an illustration of patient faith. Certainly Abraham sinned — and even repeated one sin twice — yet God kept his promises to him.

After all, the covenants of God do not depend on the faith of the saints for their certainty; they depend only on the faithfulness of God. God verified the promise of Genesis 22:16-17 by swearing by himself — and that settled it. Abraham did not receive the promised blessing because of his own goodness or obedience, but because of the faithfulness of God. Abraham experienced many trials and testings (as did the original readers of Hebrews), but God saw him through.

In Hebrews 6:17, the writer says God did all this for Abraham that the “heirs” might know the dependability of God’s counsel and promise. Who are these heirs? According to verse 18, all true believers are heirs, for we are Abraham’s children by faith (see Galatians chapter 3). So, there are “two immutable things”

that give us assurance: God’s promises (for God cannot lie) and God’s oath (for God cannot change). The unchanging word of God (the Bible) and the unchanging person of God are all we need to assure us we are redeemed and kept for eternity.

We have a “hope” to anchor our souls, and this “hope” is Christ Jesus himself (Hebrews 7:19-20; 1 Timothy 1:1). How can we “drift” spiritually (Hebrews 2:1-3) when in Christ we are anchored to heaven itself? We have a sure and steadfast anchor; and we have a “forerunner” (Jesus Christ) who has opened the way for us and will see to it we one day shall join him in glory.

Instead of frightening saints into thinking they are lost, this wonderful chapter warns against unbelief and an unrepentant heart and also assures us we are anchored for eternity.
