to celebrate 80 years

The Rochester Lions Club will mark its 80th anniversary soon.

The club will celebrate that accomplishment at its next

meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 7. It starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Lions’ clubhouse at 102 W. Monticello Road. The district governor overseeing the Rochester Lions Club will be present.

According to information pro-

vided by members Phil and Katie McCarter, the club officially started on Feb. 17, 1943.

“A Lioness Club (women’s version) was chartered in April 1989, but no longer exists,” infor-

mation provided by the McCarters says.

Women originally weren’t allowed to be Lions Clubs members, but that rule was dropped by the overall Lions’ organization Continued on page 2

Know Your neighbor Valley FFA Advisor Slagle welcomes students into ag community

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Hope Slagle said the agriculture community “welcome(d)” her when she joined FFA in eighth grade.

Now, she helps others feel the same way as one of Tippecanoe Valley High School’s ag teachers and FFA advisors.

Slagle is in her third year of teaching at TVHS. Though she lives in Akron now, Slagle is originally from southeast Indiana, graduating from East Central High School.

It was a friend who got Slagle to join FFA in junior high.

There, the community drew her in even though she didn’t grow up in a farming family.

“I’m very appreciative of how welcoming when I was in school the FFA community and ag community were to me,” said Slagle.

“They never made me feel like I was different or less because I wasn’t raised on a farm,” she said. “I competed in a lot of contests when I was in school, and I liked the competitive nature of that, but it just was a place I felt like I belonged,” she continued.

Slagle “served as (an FFA) chapter officer for two years,” later being a district officer and trying for a state office; however, her original career goal was to become a veterinarian due to her love for animals. After learning how many years of education it would take to join that profession, Slagle changed her mind.

“I knew I always enjoyed my ag classes when I was in high school, and I have great respect for my former ag teacher,” she said. “When I went to Purdue (University), I was in explor-

atory studies initially, and then I made the switch I think after my first semester at Purdue to ag education.”

She has a bachelor’s degree in that field and hopes to eventually gain her master’s degree in education.

Slagle minored in horticulture at Purdue, also having a love for plants, mentioning she currently has “a jungle in (her) apartment.”

She competed in horticulture contests while in FFA and then helped judge them as a Purdue student. Now, she leads the Valley FFA horticulture team and teaches “plant-based” classes at the school.

Slagle also leads Valley’s dairy judging, entomology and novice parliament FFA teams among others.

As a teacher, her classes include beginning ag ones, while her colleague, Mike Jones, teaches the more advanced ones.

One of her classes is offered to Tippecanoe Valley Middle School eighth graders.

“Last year was the first year we expanded into the middle school, and this year, there was a wait list for kids to take (it),” she said.

She noted due to Indiana’s requirement, students focus on “career pathways” as they go through high school, more students seem interested in taking ag courses.

“It’s becoming a more popular option for kids, who maybe aren’t as STEM oriented, then a lot of schools are having to add second and third teacher positions, so I think over half of the open ag positions last year were for a second or third position,” Slagle said.

Katie, the club’s secretary, has been a member for 16 years, with Phil being one for 52. Phil actually has been involved with the Lions Club for 66 years, having joined a club when the couple lived in Converse.

“We serve and we try to do as much as we can, community-wise and internationally,” said Phil of the Lions Club.

“We have what we call the ...

Lions Club International Foundation, and (the Rochester Lions) give to that every year,” said Katie. “That goes into an international fund, and then when there are flood victims, tornado victims ... the Lions help through that.”

More locally, the Rochester Lions Club is involved with improving people’s vision. Lions Club member Dale Landis chairs the Lions’ vision checking committee.

“They probably will check around 300 preschool children in the fall,” said Katie. “Then if they find something wrong with the children’s eyesight, they can recommend (the kids) go to an optometrist.”

The Lions also collect eyeglasses and hearing aids for those in need and work with Leader Dogs for the Blind out of Minnesota to help people get vision assistance dogs.

The Rochester Lions also help build ramps for those with mobility issues, with the club’s current president Dan Copley heading up that committee.

Others in the Rochester Lions Club’s leadership include Jeff Becker, the first vice president and one of the eyeglasses committee’s chairs; Joe McCarter, who handles clubhouse rentals and is second vice president; and treasurer John Roberts.

Also serving as committee heads are: Joe Moore, co-chair for the eyeglasses committee; Corrina Summers, recruiting chair; Jeri Good, publicity chair; and Gail Karas and Stephen Williams, who run the committee for the Lions’ self-serve ice cream trailer.

The trailer is the main way the Rochester Lions fundraise, said Phil.

The Lions have sold ice cream at the Fulton County 4-H Fair, Marshall County Blueberry Festival,

Nickel Plate Music & Arts Festival and the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce’s Chili Cookoff and Blacktop Cruisers Car Club’s Red Hot Car Show.

With the monies raised, the Lions give to the Boy Scouts, 4-H, Junior Achievement and The Outlet Youth Center among others.

They award four-five college scholarships to high school seniors.

Rochester has 29 members in its club, with new members always welcomed. People need to be 18, but don’t have to live in Rochester to join. Meetings are always 7:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month, save for there being none in January and February.

Phil noted it was the club’s commitment to service why he joined originally in Converse and has continued to stay with the organization in Rochester.

Other members also echoed his reason.

Good said she’s a club member because “I felt like it was a way I could work on a team and serve others.”

Moore said the club is “one way of serving the community.”

“I joined just because I felt like it was a good organization that I could be of service to people through a group, and I feel like there are things that we do that I couldn’t do as an individual,” said Katie.

By THE REV. F i r s t , RON PURKEY avoid the fool (verses 12-13). How dangerous is it to pal around with foolish people?

Solomon says you are better off facing a grizzly bear mama who’s been robbed of her cubs (see Proverbs 17:13, 25:21–22).

It only takes one bitter word to open the floodgates of conflict.

(Proverbs 17:14) “Don’t give the devil an opportunity” (Ephesians 4:26–27) to hinder God’s work among his people. Stop a dispute before it starts (see Proverbs 29:11).

Second, the beginning of strife is as when one lets out water (verse 14). The drops that ever so gently seep through a tiny hole in a dike

can all too soon swell into a gushing torrent. From such small beginnings arise feuds that cannot be settled.

Lifetime feuds have often started with such small beginnings and have swelled to unbelievable proportions. If apologies had been immediately made and sincerely meant, the wound could have been healed immediately.

The Apostle Paul repeats this in the New Testament when he says, “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath” (Ephesians 4:26).

Third, the Lord detests injustice; all those who judge others unjustly are an abomination to him (verse 15). Injustice turns the law on its head. In a legal setting, it involves declaring the guilty to be innocent (justifies the wicked) or the innocent to be guilty (condemns the righteous).

Such injustice is possible outside the courtroom as well. It can happen whenever people pronounce an unjust verdict on someone else’s character (Proverbs 28:5; Psalm 11:3). These things may bring God’s judgment upon a person or a nation!

Fourth, an old saying warns, “A

fool and his money are soon parted” (verse 16). Unfortunately for him, he has no intention to put it to good use by buying wisdom. When all is said and done, a fool’s money will be gone, and he will still be foolish.

Fifth, have good friends (verse 17). A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a difficult time.

Difficult times can test our relationships, to be sure. But if you want to be a godly man or woman who perseveres when you feel like throwing in the towel, you need fellow God’s people who will hold you up when you grow weary. After all, when do you need a friend the most? Not when you’re on top.

A true friend stays with you when you are heading downhill, when times are rough. Sometimes you don’t know who your friends are, in fact, until you are in trouble.

Too many of us are trying to make it by ourselves when God’s plan is for us to grow, serve, and love in community. You cannot fulfill the “one another” commands of Scripture by yourself (see, John 15:12; Galatians 6:2).

Paramedic

Timothy L. Grosvenor, 74, Rochester, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at his residence.

He was born July 3, 1949, in Goshen, the son of Calvin and Donna Jean “Donnie” (Cretcher) Grosvenor Metheny. On March 28, 1991, in the Grand Bahama Islands, he married Lynne (Tribbett) Osborn; TIMOTHY L. she survives.

Tim started his professional career as co-owner, GROSVENOR along with his brother Tom, at Rochester Cement Products. After becoming an EMT in 1974, he spent much of his career as a paramedic serving Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, Logansport Memorial Hospital and Pulaski County Emergency Medical Services. He had spent a short stint as a traveling paramedic in Boca Raton, Fla. As part of his medical career, he enjoyed training others on CPR and becoming emergency medical technicians.

Tim had been a member of the Mill Creek Church and the Rochester Jaycees, where he directed the Junior Miss program. In his leisure time, he enjoyed traveling, genealogy and photography.

Survivors include his wife, Lynne Grosvenor, Rochester; children, Anjanette (Michael) Paul, Chicago, Ill., Byron (Jennifer) Osborn, Fort Wayne, Marji (Josh Pike) Osborn, Rochester, and Lincoln (Carrie) Osborn, Plymouth; foster son, Dustin (Cori) Meid, Farmersburg; grandchildren, Anna Osborn, Byron Osborn, Lily Johnson, Timmy Johnson, William Johnson, Chase Thomas, Megan Thomas, Jaxs Pike, Matthew Osborn, Taylor Medina, Tanner Medina, Aleasia Sarver, Tucker Sarver, Reine Whippo and Brice Meid; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Deb (Lonnie Evans) Grosvenor, Logansport, and Peg (Grosvenor) Howell, Rochester; brother-in-law, Allen (Andi) Tribbett, Royal Center; sister-in-law, Valerie Grosvenor, Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janice Grosvenor; brother, Thomas Grosvenor; stepdaughter, Christina Osborn; and stepfather, Wayne Metheny.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at Mill Creek Church, Rochester. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour prior to service Friday at the church. Burial will be in Davis Cemetery, Burnettsville.

A matching donation will be made to the EMS programs in Pulaski, Fulton and Cass counties to further support the work that Tim dedicated his life to.

Ronald “Ronnie” Gene Young, 90, passed into eternity Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at Life Care Center, Rochester.

Ronnie was born July 25, 1933, to the late Floyd E. and Margaret Miller Young in Miami County, Perry Township. On Aug. 2, 1956, he married Carolyn Bunn of Fulton. They were married at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church in Waterloo. They were mar- RONALD GENE YOUNG ried for 52 years; enjoying the country life in Fulton County the entire time. She preceded him in death in 2008.

Left to cherish Ronnie’s memory are two sons, Danny and wife Lisa, Rochester, and Alan and wife Julie, Poway, Calif.; one sister, Wanita Haupt, Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Danielle Sommers, Lucerne, Chelsey Young and Griffin Young, both of Poway, Calif.; four great-grandchildren, Madison Sommers, Whitney Sommers, Karlee Sommers and Reed Sommers, Lucerne; one great-great-granddaughter, his special “Punkin,” Braelyn Mae Sommers; and several nieces and nephews. Ronnie is also survived by his faithful canine companion, Jack.

Preceding Ronnie in death are two sisters, Lois Judy Young, at birth, and Donna Fields, Bedford; and one brother, Jim Young, Roann.

Like many young men at the time, Ronnie felt the call to defend his country during the Korean War and signed up with the United States Air Force before graduating from Gilead High School. He served honorably from 1951-56 as a jet mechanic in Texas, Alaska and Georgia. Upon discharge, he returned home to Fulton County, working at Beall Tire Shop for 12 years, Van Duyne Block and Gravel for 20 years and Rochester Middle and Riddle Schools for 14 years. He especially enjoyed being around all of the elementary kids, invigorated by their joy, energy and laughter.

Ronnie thankfully acknowledges the longtime friendships with Joe and the late Terry Moore, Dave and Trinity Lease, Junior and Sandy Cohagan and Charlie and Beth Patkus. The tough times were bearable and the good times were made better because you were willing to share them with him. He felt very blessed to count you as friends.

The family of Ronnie would like to personally thank the staff at Life Care Center for the love and care that he received during his time at their facility.

A celebration of the life of Ronnie Gene Young was held at 1 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Chaplain Jason See officiated. Friends visited with the family from 4-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial followed in Rochester IOOF Cemetery. She was born on Monday, April 24, 1944, in LaLINDA K. porte. On July TAYLOR 28, 1962, she married her husband Glenn; who preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 2013.

She is survived by one daughter, Colleen (John) Tripenfeldas, Winamac; daughter-in-law, Nancy Taylor, Medaryville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Donna Bailey, Knox; three brothersin-law, Russell (Carolann) Taylor, Tempe, Ariz., William (Sharon) Taylor, Laporte, Jim (Marilee) Taylor, Deer River, Minn.; and three sistersin-law, Carol Green, and Sharon Kerrick, both of Laporte, and Debbie Hanselman, Hamlet.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Katherine (Hathway) Hanselman; son, John Taylor; brother, Rick Hanselman; brother-inlaw, Robert Kerrick; and sister-in-law, Joanne Schoon.

Linda K. Fritz, 79, Star City, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, in Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

She was born on March 10, 1944, in Winamac. On April 26, 1963, LINDA K. FRITZ she married Kenneth G. Fritz in Winamac; who survives.

Additional survivors are two daughters, Christine (Timothy) Olson, Shorewood, Ill., Laurie (Keith) Kruger, Kokomo; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles F. and Gladys L. (Bridegroom) Hartwick; infant brother, Charles F. Hartwick, Jr.; two brothers, Donald Wayne Hartwick, and Frederick Eugene Hartwick; and sister, Marcella Ann Schultz.

Cremation will take place at Frain Crematory, Winamac.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-4 p.m. EDT Saturday, Nov. 4, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac.

Gospel music set for Sunday, Nov. 19 Jim Arnett will be sharing his gift of music at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Burton/Richland Center U.M.C. The church is located at 6990 N. CR 150 W., just seven miles north of Rochester.

Jimmy, as his friends called him, grew up through the first eight grades in Rensselaer. He then moved to Rochester for his high school years. Arnett was outstanding in track and field in Rochester, so much that he continued competing at Huntington University. While at Huntington, Arnett studied ministry.

After graduation, he did an internship in Countryside, Fla., for 10 years.

Wanting more depth to his education, Arnett attended Grace Theological Seminary, Warsaw.

He currently works for a steel company in Valparaiso. He has a son, who is currently attending Liberty University in Virginia.

Mentone High School alumni finalizing plans for 2024 open house The Mentone High School Alumni Association is finalizing plans for an open house in the Mentone Elementary School gym following the 2024 Mentone Days parade July 1, 2024.

The gym is one of the few remaining former high school gyms in the county. The open house will feature memorabilia and displays of sports and class memories.

Caston Elementary School has announced its honor rolls for the first grading period of the 2023-

2024 school year.

‘No’ is an important word

By RUSS DAVIDSON SR. Guest Writer As you get older and have raised your family, what things become important to us? The two words I think of are grandma and grandpa. The sound of your grandchildren’s voices may remind you of the way you were raised.

These children are just start-

ing out. If you share the things you’ve learned in your lifetime, hopefully you can influence them in ways, which will help them create a better world and future.

It won’t be easy but “no” is a very powerful word.

Youth Outlet Center announces new director The Outlet Youth Center board has announced, as of Monday, Oct. 23, Taylor Showley is the new executive director.

Showley began at The Outlet as a volunteer in 2020 and was brought on as a part-time staff member in August 2021.

In 2023, she increased her hours at The Outlet and became the director of operations, where she took care of the day-to-day operations and events.

As executive director, she will be responsible for overseeing strategic planning and programming of The Outlet Youth Center in support of organizational mission and goals.

Board President Jason See commented, “Taylor has been a great asset since she started working at The Outlet. We are so excited to now have Taylor as our executive director. She is great with the youth and the youth love her.”

Showley has had a passion for her community since she moved back to Fulton County after college in 2016.

“I didn’t expect the joy that came with digging my roots back into the place that raised me. Giving back to my community has been rewarding in more ways than I could have dreamed. Working with the youth of Fulton County has been a blessing to me as much as I hope The Outlet is a blessing to them,” she commented.

Hartzler gets CMC designation

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Akron’s clerk-treasurer has achieved a distinction, which she hopes will help her serve the town better.

Rebecca REBECCA Hartzler HARTZLER recently learned she received her certified municipal clerk, or CMC. The International Institute of

Municipal Clerks granted it.

Hartzler, who’s served as Akron’s clerk-treasurer for six years, said she had to complete 110 hours split between education and experience to earn her CMC. “It is something for me to further my education and try to be as current with all the regulations and procedures,” explained Hartzler of why she wished to earn it. “I would like for the community to know that ... I take my job very seriously.”

Hartzler said she wants to continue on with her education and attain her master municipal clerk. She added she’s grateful to the Akron Town Council for being a “very supportive board that always encourages me to attend (training) conferences, and I appreciate the information that I bring back.”

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Attendees enjoyed treats and more during the Rochester Downtown Partnership’s 2023 Boo Fest.

Kids dressed as TV and movie characters and animals among other things and collected candy from businesses and organizations along Main Street.

Boo Fest also featured a costume contest with prizes for winners in categories from infants to age 15 as well as those in group costumes.

Free health services offered in Fulton County through Compassionate Health Center

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Fulton County residents who can’t afford health care have a local resource through Compassionate Health Center.

“We provide free quality integrated health care,” said its Executive Director Mary Kay. Anyone without private or government insurance is welcome to take advantage of CHC’s services.

Those include appointments with nurse practitioner Jayme Parker, vision care provided through Family Eye Care and dental services via dentists Dr. Anne Sy and Dr. Caitlin Rich.

The Akron Lions Club also helps fund glasses for CHC patients, and Woodlawn Hospital also offers services through CHC. “We (also) network with 4C Health and (the University of) Notre Dame, and they (gave us) an in-house mental health counselor, who is a doctoral student at Notre Dame,” added Kay. CHC also can help people receive “either free or low-cost medications,” she said.

The nonprofit facility was started in 2009.

“We exist through donations, fundraisers and grants,” said Kay of CHC’s funding.

CHC’s prime fundraiser is its annual golf outing held at the Round Barn Golf Club in Rochester.

Kay said CHC has around 100 regular clients, but the organization expects to see more.

Kay said CHC would prefer to have clients come in to start a relationship while they are healthy as “it’s really hard to get them back (to) wellness (after they’ve been sick).”

She said clients should just stop by 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through

Rules are clients must be age 18-64 and have no other insurance, including Medicaid. Clients don’t have to be from Fulton County necessarily to get services too, said Kay. CHC also takes clients who come from households “up to 300%” of federal poverty guidelines.

Central Catholic trailed 22-7 with 2:39 left in the first half, but finished with 21 unanswered points. This marked the second straight year Rochester did not score in the second half of a sectional game against Central Catholic. Last year, they trailed 10-8 at halftime before eventually falling 24-8 in the final.

Alex Deming ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 12 Rochester, who finished 7-3.

Colton Ferverda added 51 yards from his left wingback spot; quarterback Carson Paulik added a season-high 37 yards on the ground.

This loss could leave a bitter taste. Rochester led 22-20 after three quarters. They had not lost a game they led after three quarters since a 29-28 overtime loss to Maconaquah in 2020.

The Zebras were trying to reach back-to-back sectional finals, something they have not done since 1995-96.

Rochester had 37 offensive snaps in the second half.

The game started ominously for Rochester. Alex Hardebeck returned the opening kickoff 72 yards with only Zakk Parks snag-

ging Hardebeck by the ankles at the Zebra 25 preventing a touchdown.

Five plays later, Metzger threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Hudson Gutwein.

Rochester scored on their first drive on a 56-yard touchdown run from Deming. He sprung loose off right guard and somersaulted in the end zone.

A Brant Beck two-point conversion run gave Rochester their first lead at 8-7.

Central Catholic went threeand-out on their next possession and faced fourth-and-7 from their own 37. They elected to punt. Ray Clayton, who is the Knights’ star receiver, is also their punter. The snap went over his head and he tracked it down inside his own 5-yard-line and somehow got off a 5-yard punt with Zebras in pursuit.

One of those in pursuit was Vance, who laid on the ground in pain near the goal line.

Shorthanded on the line but benefitting from a short field, Rochester drove 41 yards in eight plays.

The big play was an 11-yard Ferverda run, and a Central Catholic face mask penalty moved the ball to the Central Catholic 9.

By CARISSA ZIEMEK, MBA Marketing and Communication Specialist, Fulton County REMC The employees of Fulton County REMC dedicated their Monday, Oct. 23 morning to volunteer at the Fulton County Fairgrounds.

They undertook two significant projects to contribute to the fairgrounds improvement.

The first project involved wiring the hog building, and the second entailed the cleaning, painting, and weatherproofing of picnic tables. Additionally, a few outdoor lights received updates during our service efforts.

REMC would like to express their gratitude to Bill Walsh for his valuable assistance with the wiring project.

Participating in the Community Day of Service has been a tradition for electric cooperatives nationwide, demonstrating commitment to the seven cooperative principles, one of which is “Concern for Community.” They take great pride in supporting and giving back to both membership and the community they are dedicated to serving.
