9-1-1 center %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU A new era of 9-1-1 communications is nearly ready to begin in Fulton County. Housed in the n e w l y constructed Fulton County S h e r i f f ’s Office and Detention Center complex on Sweetgum Road on the south side of Rochester, the new emergency dispatch center will be unprecedented for this area. Fulton County 9-1-1 Director Gail Karas is hopeful the new site will be fully operational by December. “We are constructing the new 9-1-1 dispatch center with an eye toward the future and potential growth,” said Gail Karas. “We shouldn’t have to perform any major upgrades on this facility for at least 20 years.” Pending approval, Karas said the new dispatch center will feature a 300-foot radio tower to provide maximum communication capabilities. Not only will it provide the necessary range, it will also allow for growth and expansion. Each autonomous work station will have upgraded ergonomic chairs for the comfort of the dispatchers who often work their shifts with few breaks. The chairs are designed to meet the dispatcher’s needs for safety and health. They also have individual temperature controls to suit each person’s personal preferences. When the dispatchers do need a break, especially after handling a difficult or emotional call, there is

a private room set up across the hall with a comfortable reclining chair to help them decompress. The dispatch room itself is completely situated on a raised platform, which allows for all the wires, cables and other necessary components of the center to be housed beneath the work stations. This allows for a less cluttered environment while still providing technicians easy access to the equipment should something need to be replaced or maintained. “When we began designing the

dispatch center, we put together a team questionnaire for the dispatchers,” said Karas. “Each dispatcher was given the opportunity to fill out an operator’s point of view on the desire changes and the current functionality of their job.” She went on to say there is a desire to be able to increase the collaboration between workstations while maintaining stand alone or custom workgroup flexibility to fit perfectly in a command and Continued on page 3
