Charlie’s Garden %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Charlie Young has been a garden enthusiast for 57 years. Now, at 78 years old, Young still enjoys planting, tending and growing things from herbs to apple trees in his backyard. Young settled down in Rochester 29 years ago after spending three years in the military. He purchased a property he called the “posy patch” that was an overgrown flower garden. “Flowers are too much work,” he jokes. He soon turned the posy patch into a garden of vegetables. Although Young has moved to several different properties in the Rochester area, one thing he always had was his garden. When asked what got him into gardening, Young stated, “When I was kid, everyone had a garden.” He continued to share that his uncles used to have farms in Michigan he would frequent to pick various fruits and vegetables when he was younger. At 21 years old, Young decided it was time for him to start his own garden to grow his own produce. “It is just

something I got into … I’ve been gardening a long time.” While walking through his garden, Young can point out each plant and tell you exactly what it is used for, from eating flowers from the chive herbs in a salad to eating gooseberries with oats and honey. But if you ask him, “What do you do with that?”, he will simply answer with, “Eat.” His garden consist of produce such as grapes, strawberries, gooseberries, apples, cherries, onions, rhubarb, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, peppers, green beans, sweet corn, butternut squash, potatoes and more. He starts prepping his garden as soon as he can get outside in the spring. As soon as it warms up, Young begins his process of planting. After years of experience, Young has made a planting tool made out of PVC pipes. Not only is it easier on his back, he states it is more efficient this way. “The worst thing is buying the equipment, but you gotta have the correct equipment if you want it done right.” Young laughed when he was

asked how long it takes to tend his garden. “It’s a lot of work, but I want to keep going while I can.” Young expressed it took him about a week to plant everything. After planting was done, he spent approximately six hours a day in the earlier days pruning and maintaining his garden for the season. “I grow enough to last all year,” comments Young. He and his wife will can, freeze and store some of his excess crops. Not only does he stock up for him and his wife, he also shares with others. Young is known as the “veggie man” to his VA doctors and nurses, as he takes bags of produce to them when he has visits. “Last fall, I took six grocery bags full of veggies,” he shares. He also delivers bags to the senior center when he has an overabundance. Young has a passion for gardening and loves to share that with others. He has helped and encouraged neighbors in starting their own backyard gardens as well shared tips to other gardeners. Young will say, “You get started, and after you eat a fresh veggie, there is nothing better.”

(Read Galatians 3:19-29) “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:29). %\ 5(9 521 All of 385.(< Paul’s arguments are logical. But the particular arguments here depend especially on reasoning, as Paul compares the law to a human contract. “When two people make a contract, it is illegal for a third party to step in and change it or cancel it. God made a contract (covenant) with Abraham 400 years before the law was given. The Law of Moses could never cancel God’s original promise to Abraham. God gave that promise to Abraham’s seed as well, and verse 16 indicates that this seed is Christ. The Mosaic Law was not a new way of salvation that canceled God’s promises to Abraham; this would not be logical. Promise and faith go together, but not promise and law. “Why then did God even give the law?” his objectors would argue. Paul gave three answers: First, the law was temporary and only for Israel. (Galatian 3:19-20) Romans 2:14 and Acts 15:24 make it clear that God

never gave the law to the Gentiles. The moral law was already written in the Gentiles’ hearts (Romans 2:15). But the ceremonial law (including the Sabbath laws) was never given to the Gentiles. The law was “added” and was not a replacement for the Abrahamic promises. Once the seed (Christ) came, the law was superseded. “But the law was given with such glory!” the Judaizers would reply. “How can you say it was only temporary?” Paul’s answer: the law was given by angelic mediators, but God spoke personally to Abraham; and the fulfillment of his promise to Abraham depended on God alone. Second, the law convicted us of sin but never saved us from sin. (Galatian 3:21-22) If there were a law that saved sinners, then God would have spared his Son and used that law instead of the cross. The law is not contrary to God’s promises; by revealing sin, the law forces the sinner to trust God’s promises. Law shows us our need of grace; grace

enables us to please God through faith. The law places all under sin, which means that all can be saved by grace. If God permitted even one sinner to be saved by law, then no person could be saved by grace. All must be saved the same way. Third, the law prepared the way for God’s son, Jesus Christ. (Galatian 3:23-29) Before the faith we now know came, the law shut men up, revealing their need for a Savior. The law was God’s “schoolmaster” (tutor) for the Jews in their national infancy. The Greek and Roman tutor used to guard and teach the minor children until they reached legal adulthood, after which the children were on their own. The law kept Israel “in line,” so to speak, until the Messiah came and the full revelation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was given to both Jews and Gentiles. taining and demonstrating the very tools and machinery used to drive American agriculture and industry over a century ago. This is a busy time for Power From the Past members as they meet regularly to ready a host of tractors, threshers, peelers, shellers, binders, spreaders, two saw-mills, a blacksmith shop, a variety of steam and gas-powered engines and more. And not only must the equipment be operable, but it must be mobile, easily moved from place to place. Two of those places are the Fulton County Historical Power Show in Rochester, June 1012, and the hometown showcase event, the 45th Northern Indiana Power From the Past show in Winamac, July 14-17. These events grew exponentially in the 1980s after a few tractors were shown at the Pulaski County Fair to help celebrate the bicentennial in 1976. Northern Indiana Power From the Past was incorporated in 1978. On a recent Thursday in June, current President John Crist was joined by longtime members at the group’s property near Braun Field in Winamac. Among them is Josh Wilder, an original member and the longest-serving president at 20 years. “We have a lot of respect for things from back in the day,” he noted.

Farmers in particular used simple engines to perform a wide array of tasks we take for granted today. These machines, and the ability to maintain them, provided an unprecedented level of efficiency and independence. Wilder recalled when his father was able to pump water from a well to water livestock using a small gas-powered engine, freeing him for several other necessary chores. Such engines, along with steam and gas-powered tractors, provided the foundation for Power From the Past, from which has grown a dizzying array of equipment at its Winamac location. “We try to have a variety of everything,” said Wilder. “There’s a good showing for all of it,” he added. “We’re always pleased with the amount of people who show up.” “Josh is an inspiration to me,” said Crist, whose involvement increased dramatically after a time of personal upheaval. “It helped me come back to reality and grow further.” After 10 years of 4-H, Crist said Power from the Past gave him a place to “continue to build.” Another original member,

Bob Smith, whose wife Chris was on the park board in that inspirational bicentennial year, recalled how his interest in old gas engines started with a 35 horsepower oil field engine, which was connected to a system of gears capable of running a field of pumps for up to 30 days before needing to be serviced. Reflecting on those early days he commented, “No one ever thought about still doing this in 45 years.” Smith noted the group has a “good variety of people with different talents.” Everyone has a role to play, from an electrician to set up power for the busy flea market area to the trainer for the huge draft horses in the popular horse pull. “That’s what it takes to keep things moving.” Smith, who also serves as the announcer at events, pointed out another “past” feature of the Winamac show; the price, which has remained at $3 since 1978. “We’re proud of the fact the gate fee never changed.” For more information visit www.winamacpowershow.com or Northern Indiana Power From the Past on Facebook.

Farmers Market is ready for summer %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU The Fulton County Farmers Market is underway, featuring fresh food, mostly grown locally in Fulton County. The produce is usually picked just a day before, if not the same day. The farmers market is open every Saturday 8 a.m. to noon located on the east side of the Fulton County Courthouse, 815 Main St., Rochester. Nancy Trier has been participating in farmers markets for close to 25 years. In the earlier months of the market she usually has rhubarb available, but throughout the season Trier mainly sells her perennial flowers. For the last 21 years, she has been the market manager and treasurer. “Our market is all about food,” stated Trier. In past years, the market has had a variety of regular vendors offering food and artisanal goods that include fresh vegetables, herbs, flowers, handcrafted items and baked goods. Trier explains that the items available at the market are always changing. “There are different seasons for growing different things. Each vegetable and fruit has its own season.” She continued stating as the summer continues, the gardens grow and new things become available. “Right now we have a lot of asparagus,” Trier shared. A newer addition to the farmers market is fresh eggs. “We haven’t had a regular vendor with eggs until now,” Trier explained. This makes a great new item to the list of things available. Trier said she hopes to continue to grow the farmers market. “New vendors are always welcome.” She also said that support of the community is needed to continue growing the market. Trier mentioned more turnout of the com-

Church to offer their condolences and support. Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors. The first is a $1,500 one-time scholarship to a senior member of the school’s yearbook staff and the second, the “Dreams Come True” award, given to a senior “with passion, vision and dreams, who has plans to impact the world in positive ways.” The scholarship provides ( 4V[OL $1,000 annually for four years to a senior NorthWood Y /L -VY ;OL )V`U student who applies and is then selected by the nineZ ElkAfter person board, which includes Mikel. year’s o Edithis :LL 7HNL tion Reachin awards are given, Mikel said theVol. foundation have ch g Elk 35, No.will hart, Kos 3 provided more than $105,000 in aid to students. ciusko, Nob The annual run and walk, which began only seven le And LaG months after Kelsey’s death thanks to the organization www.seniorli range Counties of family friends, has grown into a popular Thanksgivfenewspaper s.com ing morning event that attracts hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters each year. The Mikels have been active in many other organizations to help preserve their memories of Kelsey. They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years. “August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.” Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on. Carpenter named DAR Good Citizen The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution is pleased to announce the DAR Good Citizens for the 20212022 school year. Each fall four Kosciusko County high schools have the opportunity to choose one senior student who exemplifies the following qualities: Dependability — Truthfulness, loyalty, punctuality, being worthy of trust. Service — Cooperation, courtesy, contributing to the welfare of others. Leadership — Personality, ability to assume responsibility and inspire others, decision-making. Patriotism — Devotion to and support of the United States of America, supporting service members and veterans, working for causes that make one’s community stronger. A student chosen as a Good Citizen may elect to participate in the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest by providing a “résumé,” grade transcript and letters of recommendation and write an impromptu, timed essay on the provided topic. This year’s scholarship essay title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” with the focus question, “How do the qualities of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership and patriotism) help support our nation?” The local DAR Good Citizen is Jaeda Carpenter. Carpenter was named Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter DAR Good Citizen by independent, non-DAR judges. Her portfolio was sent for competition in the state DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest. Carpenter is the daughter of Larry Carpenter, Rochester. At Tippecanoe Valley High School, she is a member of Student Council, Peer Facilitators, Unified Council, National Honor Society, softball and volleyball manager, Indiana Association of Student Councils and several other activities. She received the Academic All-State Volleyball Support Staff award in 2021. Carpenter has been employed detailing cars, working the Little League concession stand and babysitting. She has several areas of volunteer work. Her future plans are to attend Purdue University and major in exploratory studies to find a career she loves, and she wants to continue to serve her community and be a mentor for students. Carpenter was honored at the March meeting of the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
