Round Barn Golf Club at Mill Creek in Rochester has hired a new “jack of all trades” to manage its operations. Lee Cutting, 40, joined the ranks of the city-owned 18-hole, par-72 course March 15, and he brings a full spectrum of talents to the position defined as head golf professional/administrative manager. Cutting took up golf “at a young age,” and reveled in the sport from “probably age 10 to 15. Then I got more serious about hockey and baseball. I did play golf my freshman year and got back into it more seriously at the age of 21.” Cutting has compiled an impressive resume of golfing achievements. He has played in pro-am tournaments, both as an amateur and a professional. He won the Huntington County amateur tournament six times and captured the annual Norwood Golf Club championship seven times from 2004-2019. He has notched two holes-inone, both on par-3 holes in Huntington. His dad witnessed his first ace in 2007. His second, a 185-yarder, came in 2019. Cutting also brings administrative experience to his position, having been a part owner and director of operations of Norwood from 2014 to 2017. His day-today duties at Round Barn, which hosts “probably 200 to 225 rounds of golf a week” during the season, include running the golf leagues and tournaments, hiring staff, monitoring and purchasing inventory and keeping the finances. Beyond Cutting’s tangible skill set, he brings a love for the game he tries to instill in others. “I have a great passion for the game of golf,” he said. “I would love to pass on my skills and knowledge to individuals in the

Teaching myself the game has taught and given me a lot, like integrity, honesty, selfrespect and patience, and how to remain calm in challenging situations.” Cutting cited as his greatest satisfaction as a club pro, “watching individuals grow with the game, and seeing the drive within them to get better.” He suggested those considering taking up the game “come in and I’ll set you up with a set of shop clubs and help get you started with the proper gear and accessories. Many people think golf is such an expensive sport, but that’s not the case.”

Cutting addressed another misconception. “Beginners feel like a nuisance and don’t want to plug up the course,” he said. “I encourage people not to feel like that.” He said novices can first use Round Barn’s practice area before hitting the links. The area includes a driving range, two putting greens and “a 70- to 90-yard short game area to practice chipping, putting and bunker shots.” He plans to add a couple leagues “in the very near future,” including a two-person Wednesday league, and will hold a kid’s clinic “this summertime” and a women’s golf clinic with group lessons, with dates to be announced. He said the Round Barn course is “in fantastic shape” and said

the course, which ranges from about 5,000 to 6,850 yards from its four tee lengths, can “play tough, especially with the Chicago winds, but it is a very fair and very fun course.” Cutting, his wife, Stephanie, their son, Ethan, 16, and daughter, Adalyn, 14, currently live in Huntington, but they are considering settling into the Rochester area community. Round Barn is currently looking for seasonal part-time employees in the pro shop, as cart cleaners and to serve on the maintenance and grounds crew. For more information, call the pro shop at (574) 223-5717 or Cutting at (260) 224-1609 or visit www.roundbarngolfclub.com or the club’s Facebook page.
