teaching children the power of %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and a new organization, The Ladybug Foundation, has embarked on three campaigns designed to connect Fulton County businesses, schools and mental health providers to improve levels of happiness in young people.

Like many others, Ladybug founder Lindsay Barts had some time for reflection during the COVID pandemic. The former teacher was all too aware of some startling facts related to mental health. Not only has suicide become the No. 2 killer of teenagers in the United States, but in rural areas such as Fulton County, the problems of suicide, substance abuse and depression are worse, with half of mental

POSITIVITY illness cases going undiagnosed or untreated due to lack of resources.

Also, mental health organizations are necessarily focused on treatment rather than preventative measures such as education to combat the lack of awareness surrounding mental health problems in rural areas. Furthermore, in one local survey, Barts noted, “Respondents felt education in mental health needed to be increased, specifically in the younger grades.”

For these reasons and more, Barts created Ladybug Foundation to “serve as a community organization marketing initiatives around mental health education.” The work

started in May 2020 and was composed primarily of research and developing relationships with other nonprofits. In April 2022 three campaigns were ready.

On The Ladybug Foundation Facebook page and other social media sites, local business owners and community influencers can be seen reading children’s literature containing lessons on happiness, social connection or gratitude, habits scientifically proven to “improve happiness in humans.”

Barts also collaborated with Four County Mental Health on “positivity rocks,” literally rocks painted by students. This campaign also

includes reading aloud from children’s books like “The Little Engine That Could.” These activities take place at Fulton County elementary schools and are facilitated by high school students and Four County liaisons who provide the rock-painting kits.

“By the end of May, Fulton County will be over 300 positivity rocks richer,” Barts enthused.

Finally, all Fulton County elementary schools grades K-5 took part in a coloring contest. The mental health coloring pages are being posted in libraries and businesses throughout the county. Thirty-six Continued on page 3

Showley has had an interest in music since a young age.

“My mom was the choir director at Rochester High School, and I grew up in the auditorium watching musical practices. Music has always been in my life,” she shared.

When Showley was in high school, she felt God was guiding her into ministry. “I was already involved in music with my church and once I figured out what I was being pulled toward — it was the only thing that made sense.” She added, “I’ve been around music my whole

life. I’ve been around the church my whole life, and I just felt called to continue to do that.”

Showley pursued her calling and graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2016 with a degree in worship and church music. She returned to Rochester, but she would have to wait a couple of years before she began working at the church she called home — Grace United Methodist Church.

In the meantime, she commuted to New Carlisle for work and aided the community where she was needed.

A former high school swimmer, she began a four-year journey of coaching the Rochester Royals swim team in the evenings, which is where she discovered she enjoyed working with kids.

ter opened its doors, she started volunteering there as well.

In 2018, a position at Grace became available, which allowed her to put her college degree to use. Showley’s responsibilities at the church include, “All things music and Sunday morning activities.”

But what she really enjoys is the people. “I love interacting with them and finding ways on Sunday morning to bring us together,” she shared.

She continued to volunteer her time at the Outlet by assisting with Fridays at the Park and the Preschool Book Club.

Last summer she was appointed assistant director. “I volunteered so much that they put me on the payroll,” she joked.

“I really enjoy the kids; they’re so awesome.” She added, “They’re great kids and they just want someone to love them for who they are. It’s been fun watching those relationships move. It took around six months for them to remember my name and then it took another couple of months for them to feel like they could open up to me. But the kids are the best part.”

Showley is also a newly inducted chamber of commerce board member. “It has been a really great experience. One of the things I love about this community — and one of the reasons I’m glad I moved back here — is we have a generous community. If it’s not giving money, it’s giving time and resources and advice. Our businesses love to work together and they love to make things happen, and one place that starts is at the Chamber,” she stated.

“The church and the Outlet

Youth Center keep me very busy,” she said. When Showley has free time, she enjoys baking bread, cross-stitching, quilting and relaxing with her 13-yearold Pomeranian Yorkie mix named Charlotte, who according to Showley, “Runs my life.”

Mandeep Singh, a junior National Honor Student at Rochester High School, is one of 25 high school students helping with the campaigns. “I wanted to serve my community and raise awareness for mental health, something not being talked about,” he said. “People are fighting a silent battle, and they feel they have to take it all alone.”

“We’re breaking the stigma,” said Barts.

Singh said he was surprised by his own reaction when reading “Wild Feelings” to elementary school students. “I felt more confident. I didn’t expect that.”

Singh has also helped collect the coloring pages. “I was looking through the submissions. I don’t think they know how artistic they are. They don’t have to compare themselves to anybody. It allows them to express themselves.”

Art and creativity is an “innate part of our make-up,” said Barts, and an ideal preventative therapy

David Scott Hatfield, 47, Rochester, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at Indiana University Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

Scott was born Oct. 4, 1974, in Goshen, the son of David and Rosa (Constant) Hatfield. He grew up in the Mentone area, graduating from Tippecanoe Valley High School, where he had played basket- '$9,' 6&277 ball and football. On September 20, 1998, in War+$7),(/' saw, he married Dawn Hoemig and she survives.

Early in his life, he was an emergency medical technician in Mentone. He spent many years working in emergency management with the Bastrop County, Texas, and Caldwell County, Texas, sheriff’s departments as a dispatcher. After working in Texas, he moved to the state of Washington. There he worked for the Eastside Public Safety Communications Agency in Redmond, Wash., where he managed the infrastructure of communications for 911. He had been a member of ABATE, enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an avid outdoorsman.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn Hatfield, Rochester; children, Tech Sgt. Tayler (Stormy) Hatfield, South Carolina, Logann Hatfield, Rochester, Jordan Hatfield, Rochester, and Joshua, Hatfield, Muncie; grandson, Enzo Ponte, Rochester; parents, David and Rosa Hatfield, Andrews; sister, Donna Fisher, Texas; and 23 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Trina Hatfield.

Services will be announced at a later date.

Carol Lee (Calhoun) Kelsey

VFW Ladies Auxiliary Member Carol Lee (Calhoun) Kelsey, 85, returned peacefully to heaven at 6:11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2022.

Carol was born to Jim and Goldie (Garland) Calhoun in Fulton County on Aug. 23, 1936. She &$52/ /(( was a longtime resident of Monterey and a mem&$/+281 ber of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was a dedi.(/6(< cated, hard worker all her life and worked many years at the Culver Academies.

Carol was loved and cared for by her neighbor, Richard Rowe, alongside Mike and Haidee Temme and their children.

Carol is survived by daughter, Jean Ann Groning of Rochester; three grandchildren, Brian and daughter Lillian, Melissa (Alex) and Bobby; and son-in-law, Ron Groning, all of Mishawaka.

Carol was preceded in death by three children, Jeffrey Kelsey and twins Scott and Laura; her parents; siblings; and many family members.

Carol was laid to rest at Leiters Ford Cemetery following a graveside service at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 12.

Donald E. Showley, 87, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 4:20 a.m. Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Wynnfield Crossing of Rochester.

On June 1, 1934, Donald Edward was born in Flint, Mich., to Ralph Edward and Hazel Viola Walker Showley. Proudly he graduated with the '21$/' ( class of 1952 from Grass Creek High School. As a 6+2:/(< Wildcat, he played basketball and participated in track, throwing the shot put.

Don and Glenda Wilson were married Aug. 21, 1954, at Rochester’s Grace United Methodist Church. Together they shared over 64 years of life’s adventures. From their union came three wonderful children, Debbie, Dennis and Dan. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In the early years, Don gained his start in farming with the help of his in-laws, Glenn and Lera Wilson. Showley Farms evolved over the years that now include four generations, with Don at the helm. Their crops include soybeans and corn. Don’s happy place each fall was being seated on board his New Holland combine cutting the beans.

A servant to his community, Don served on several boards including the Rochester Community School board, Indiana State REMC board and the board of directors of the 1st National Bank. His memberships include Grace United Methodist Church, Manitou Moose Lodge 1107, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, all of Rochester, and the Lincoln Masonic Lodge 523 of Macy.

To relax Don enjoyed meeting his buddies for a game of tennis and more recently pickleball. He and Glenda wintered in Florida for 36 years. While in Florida, he enjoyed fishing the intercoastal waterways and catching a few spring training games. Don also grew orchids while in the Sunshine State. At home he followed Big Ten sports, especially Purdue and IU. He was always tuned in to the Chicago Cubs to watch their progress.

OBITUARIES David Robert Lobley Vice President Of Engineering David Robert Lobley passed away peacefully Friday, May 13, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne, after a brief illness caused by heart failure.

Born on Dec. 14, 1959, in Bangor, Maine, he was 62. Dave was a longtime resident of Rochester.

He worked for 29 years at Innovative Composites, '$9,' 5 Rochester. He and Phil Connolly started the company, /2%/(< which designs and manufactures resin transfer molding for products such as sewage tank covers.

Dave was vice president of engineering, managing the technical and production aspects, while Phil handled the business side. The company has grown steadily over the years. Phil says he and Dave played a lot of golf and attended a lot of races over the years, as well as building the business.

Dave lived a number of places as a child, from Maine to Ohio to New Hampshire to Connecticut to Newport, R.I. In Newport, he attended the New School through ninth grade. He finished high school at Kents Hill School in Maine.

A lifelong athlete, he excelled at basketball and soccer, visiting Moscow and Helsinki as a student in a basketball cultural exchange. He was memorialized in the press as the first, with his colleagues, to play frisbee in Red Square.

As an adult, he was an avid golfer. He and close friend, Dan Connolly, traveled around the Eastern U.S. seeking new golf course challenges. Dave also enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing in northern Maine.

Dave had an innate sense of how things worked and amazed family and friends by his ability to put things together with no directions or to repair them to their former state. This ability helped him succeed at his career.

David leaves his partner of 30 years, Norma Jean “Jeannie” Kimberlin, Rochester, and her two children, Terry and Amanda, and grandson Christian; his mother, Caroline Perkins of Florida; two brothers, John Lobley of New York and Joe Lobley of Maine, and their families; as well as a maternal uncle and aunt, John and Linda Perkins of Maine. He also leaves four stepsisters, Rebecca, Jessica, Cecily and Barbara Brainard; and a stepbrother, John Brainard.

Everyone who knew David appreciated his sense of humor and kindheartedness.

He will be missed and will always be in the hearts of those who love him.

Youth Leadership Camp now available Applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Indiana Sheriffs’ Association Youth Leadership Camp taking place in June and July.

The northern session of the camp will be held June 13-16 at Pine Creek Camp in Pine Village.

Watch for farm equipment on roads during planting season Planting season is here for Indiana’s 94,000 farmers. With the warm weather and sunshine, Hoosier motorists will also see more large, slow-moving farm equipment on Indiana’s rural roads and highways. Indiana Departments of Agriculture and Transportation want to encourage all motorist to be alert, be patient and be courteous when traveling on rural roads this spring.

While the term “farm equipment” encompasses a wide range of vehicles, the most common types motorists will encounter during planting season include sprayers, tractors pulling planters or tillage equipment and large trucks hauling agricultural products. These vehicles are wide, sometimes taking up most of the road and often travel at speeds no greater than 25 mph.

are able to let motorists pass, but it may take time for them to get to a safe place to do so.

•Be patient. Farm equipment is wide, sometimes taking up most of the road.

•Be careful when passing. Do not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone” or within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevation structure or tunnel.

•Do not try to pass slow-moving farm equipment on the left without ensuring that the farmer driving is not planning a left turn. It may appear that the driver is pulling over to allow a pass when the farmer is actually preparing to turn. You will drive right into its path, endangering yourself and the farmer.

•Avoid tailgating, as some farm equipment might have to make sudden stops along the road.

•Allow plenty of time to get to a destination, be aware of alternate routes and avoid distractions.

Little Free Library at Argos park Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front yard book exchanges number more than 100,000 around the world in over 100 countries; from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan.

Now, a new Little Free Library at William L. Foker Park, also called “Pond Park”, 137 Pond St., Argos, will join the movement to share books, bring people together and create communities of readers.

Little Free Library charter No. 139947 was built by Laura Jones’ husband. The outside features barn wood from Jones’ grandmother McGriff’s barn, which is very special because her grandmother was her biggest influence to be a reader, writer and librarian. The inside is Jones’s signature favorite color, hot pink. Jones is a Librarian by profession and in her free time, she is a book reviewer, book blogger and bookstagramer.

Jones loves her small hometown of Argos, where she spent five years as the School Librarian at Argos Community Schools. She now works for the Indiana State Library. She is a volunteer Argos Youth Soccer Coach, a member of the Argos Lions Club and very active in her local church. Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors.

The Mikels have been active in many other organizations to help preserve their memories of Kelsey.

They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.

ISP post holds memorial service An inscription on the memorial stone in front of the Indiana State Police Peru Post reads, “We Will Remember Them.”

On Wednesday, May 11, that promise was kept when local law enforcement officers, retired state police employees, local government officials and family members of the fallen joined employees from the ISP Peru Post as they paid tribute to the 47 ISP employees who have died in the line of duty since the department’s inception in 1933.

The service started with troopers standing at attention as Captain Jeremy Kelly, Area I commander for the ISP, read a roll call of the fallen employees. Lieutenant T.J. Zeiser, commander of the ISP Peru Post, provided a brief description of what led to the fallen employees’ final call. The solemn ceremony ended with the playing of Taps by a bugler.

•Master Trooper Detective David E. Rich died July 5, 2007, of a gunshot wound he received when a motorist he stopped to assist opened fire on him as he approached a disabled vehicle on US 24 in Wabash County.

•Trooper Daniel R. Barrett died Jan. 27, 2008, while attempting to catch a speeding vehicle on US 31 in northern Fulton County. His police car left the roadway and struck a tree, killing the trooper instantly.

Let’s study the Bible Freedom in Christ (Read John chapter 8) “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

In the scripture before us, we see Jesus dispelling spiritual darkness, discerning the thoughts and hearts of men and women and cleansing the souls of sinful people. The scripture is true: “Thy word is a lamp unto me feet, and a light unto my path.”

An old hymn says, “Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night / Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come / Into Thy freedom, gladness, and light / Jesus, I come to Thee.”

The Pharisees complained that Jesus was the only one who was making statements like: “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). Jesus pointed them to the law (John 8:17). “It is also written in your

law, that the testimony of two men is true.” (John 8:17) Jesus pointed to the law of Moses, which declared the testimony of two witnesses to be true. (John 8:17) There are two witnesses to Christ.

“I am one that bears witness of myself, and the father that sent me beareth witness of me.” (John 8:18) His words passed this requirement. He testified about himself through his messianic claims, and the father also testified about him through his miraculous deeds.

First, a woman was caught in adultery (John 8:1–11). But where was the man? According to the law both of them deserved to die (Leviticus 20:10). It was a trap and Jesus knew it, but he ended up trapping the trappers. Did he write on the ground to remind them that he had written the law (Exodus 31:18) or to refer them to Jeremiah 17:13 (see Luke 10:20)? Here is our wonderful assurance: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

Second, religious leaders were spiritually blind (John 8:12–29). The religious leaders did not know where they were going or where he was going because they were in the dark spiritually. They had the light of the Law (John 8:5; Proverbs 6:23) and of conscience

(John 8:9), but they did not have the light of life. Consequently, they did not know God the Father or understand what Jesus taught them.

Third, people were in physical and spiritual slavery (John 8:30–59). The people were in bondage to Rome and to the law of Moses, yet they said they were free. In John 8:35 Jesus may have been referring to Isaac and Ishmael (Genesis 21:8– 21), since the religious leaders had mentioned Abraham (John 8:33).

The son makes you free (John 8:36), so trust him and follow him. His truth makes you free (John 8:32), so study it, believe it and obey it. Satan imposes slavery that seems like freedom (2 Peter 2:19); but Jesus gives you a yoke that sets you free (Matthew 11:28–30).
