For the second consecutive year, The Ladybug Foundation, founded by Lindsay Barts, is recognizing May Mental Health Awareness Month with a campaign to address mental health in the Fulton County community.

This year, Barts is securing sponsorship for teachers and nurses to receive free yoga classes from Roots Yoga Project, which was also organized by The Ladybug Foundation and is now located next to the Times Theater on Main Street in Rochester.

“Yoga is a proven modality for helping with depression, anxiety and overall mental wellbeing,” said Barts. According to Harvard Medical School’s “Yoga for Better Mental Health,” studies using MRI scans and other brain-imaging technology have shown that people who regularly did yoga had a thicker cere-

cessfully pass.”

“I’m in my eighth year playing for K-County Jr. Roller Derby,” stated RaeLyn Gibbs, Rochester. “Our team is based in Kosciusko County and practices are on Sundays at Eastlake Skating Center in Warsaw. Since we’re a traveling team we have both girls and boys from Fulton, Marshall, St. Joe, Kosciusko and Allen Counties. Some of our competitions are in Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan. In 2019 we competed

Her mother Amy Mast is Gibbs’ number one fan. “It was First Friday in Warsaw when the adult league, the Lake City Roller Dolls, were passing out fliers,” Mast said. “They were starting a junior league and I thought RaeLyn would be a perfect fit.”

When asked what the object of the game is, Gibbs remarked, “There are four blockers and one jammer on each team. The jammer tries to get through the pack of blockers and they get a point for each blocker they suc-

Although the blockers are not allowed to use their forearms, they can become quite intimidating with their shoulders, hips and buttocks. “When I was a blocker and skating backwards, a jammer was attempting to get past me and slammed into my right shoulder. My feet came up and I hit my head against the floor. Another time, I hit a skate wheel with my mouth and suffered a busted lip.” Being a roller derby queen is not for the faint of heart.

Just because she suffers a few scrapes and injuries, Gibbs is not deterred. She’s in it for the long haul. “I love the sport. It develops upper-body strength and good balance.”

It’s also been instrumental in developing close friendships for Gibbs. “I love my teammates. I look forward to practices simply because I love being around them and touching base each week.”

Team members come up with their own handles and numbers. “My coach’s name is Buckwyld Barbie. Because of my red hair, I’ve chosen the name Cherry Bomb. We can come up with any name we want. We just can’t have two people on the team with the same name or number.”

Gibbs encourages young people to come to practice at 10 a.m. on Sundays. “For $5 a young person can try it out and see if they like skating on the team. The skates and gear are provided for visitors. All they need to bring is the mouth guard.”

Those who are veterans want their own skates and gear. “We use quad skates and it’s important that we have those we are most comfortable with and accustomed to wearing, as well as the correct wheels and toe stops. The jerseys are provided, and participants can wear their own pants or shorts.”

She’s a junior at Rochester High School. “My friends think it’s pretty cool that I’m part of a roller derby team. But that’s not the only interest I have. I love painting pictures, am in the choir, and was in the chorus of our high school musical, The Wizard of Oz.”

This year Gibbs was a finalist in the Psi Iota Xi and Honeywell Arts and Entertainment Street Banner Competition. “My banner featured Alice in Wonderland going down a tree-lined path filled with flowers and mushrooms to the Queen of Heart’s castle.”

bral cortex (the area of the brain responsible for information processing) and hippocampus (the area of the brain involved in learning and memory) compared with nonpractitioners.

“These areas of the brain typically shrink as you age, but the older yoga practitioners showed less shrinkage than those who did no yoga. This suggests that yoga may counteract age-related declines in memory and other cognitive skills. … When you lift weights, your muscles get stronger and bigger. When you do yoga, your brain cells develop new connections, and changes occur in brain structure as well as function, resulting in improved cognitive skills, such as learning and memory.”

According to the National Institutes of Health, scientific evidence shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality sleep. Numerous studies also show yoga’s benefits in arthritis, osteopenia, balance issues, oncology, women’s health, chronic pain and other specialties.

So far, Barts has had around 30 local teachers and nurses sign up yoga classes. Sponsors to date include Rochester Iron and Metal, Tidewater Executive Tax Service, Renew Health Chiropractic and Aries

“Grateful giving is a form of mental health well-being in itself,” Barts noted. She is still seeking sponsors and added that the sponsorships are taxdeductible.

Rochester Iron & Metal is sponsoring classes for four teachers, four nurses and six employees at Manitou Training Center, which is located next to RIM on Lucas Street.

Manitou Training Center is a nonprofit organization providing services for developmentally disabled adults. The center provides activities and classes on a wide range of subjects, including cooking, sign language, history and science. MTC consumers also volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Outlet Youth Center, Fulton County Parks and others. According to Site Manager Sara Fowler, MTC attendance

on any given day varies from 16-21 adults.

Rochester Iron & Metal has also hired MTC consumers for part-time work.

“They’ve got collaboration down,” enthused Barts. She added that plans are also in the works to provide a specialized 12-week program for MTC consumers at Roots Yoga, which will study yoga’s impact on their physical and mental well-being.

“This is an example of how we should be working together as a community,” said Barts.

In May 2022, The Ladybug Foundation oversaw a coloring campaign with area elementary schools to promote positive thinking.

Akron Library displays ‘Art of the Eggshell’

After seeing pictures of Pysanky eggs on the internet, Charlotte Gerdeman became interested in the art and thought “I can do that!”

Charlotte (Strong) Gerdeman was born, raised and has lived her entire life in the Akron area. She has been creating Pysanky eggs for almost two years, and her work was recently featured in “The Art of the Egg Shell,” issue 41, which is written and

published in Blackpool, England, and sold worldwide. Charlotte decorates eggs for all seasons and is willing to create special request eggs.

Pysanky is the art of “writing” on eggs (drained eggshells) with a pin head and hot wax. There are two methods: the wax embossed method, which is the method she uses; and

Authorized Dealer

the wax resist method. The wax embossed method leaves the wax on the egg; but in the wax resist method, one puts wax on in a design then dips the egg in dye. This process is repeated many times, changing the dye color between each pattern or design. When the artist is done “writing,” all the wax is removed over a flame to reveal the multicolored design.

Charlotte is the daughter of Merl and Florence Strong and is the second of four siblings. She and her classmates were the first graduating class at Tippecanoe Valley High School. She met her husband, Charles, in Ohio and transplanted him to the Akron area.

Be sure to stop by the Akron Carnegie Public Library, 205 E. Rochester St., and see Gerdeman’s beautiful and uniquely-decorated eggs. They are located behind glass in the Genealogy Room on the main level of the library. They are on display for a limited time only and are available for purchase.

Let’s study the Bible

What is prophecy? (Read: Isaiah 42:1-25)

“I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.”

(Isaiah 42:89)

To show the difference between human guessing and a prophecy from God is very simple to do. When a poll is taken, or when a politician in Washington surveys the nation and predicts coming in November of 2024 so-and-so is going to be elected, that is political guessing, not prophecy.

But suppose the same politician were to stand up in Washington and name the man who will be elected in A.D. 2180. That would be prophecy. To stand up and call the name of the president of the United States 200 plus years later is prophecy.

In the 45th chapter of Isaiah, God foretells the coming of Cyrus 200 years before he came into history. That is prophecy

as it can be known only by the Lord, the holy one of Israel, the one who could say to Cyrus before he was even born, “I have called thee by name; I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me.”

In Isaiah 42:1-9 we are introduced to Jesus Christ (see Matthew 12:18-20) as we see his first coming in humility and grace, and his second coming in power and judgment. Between these two events we have the present age of the church.

God had permitted the Jews to be captured and exiled to chasten them for their sins (Isaiah 42:18-25), but their captivity would not be forever. He would come in judgment and destroy Babylon (Isaiah 42:10-17), using Cyrus as his tool. Isaiah chapter 43 again assures Israel, “Fear not — I am with thee.” Their deliverance would make them witnesses to the world of the grace and power of almighty God (Isaiah 43:10, 12).

But Isaiah rebukes the nation of Israel for having forgotten God (Isaiah 43:22-27); and yet in his grace and mercy the Lord would forgive their sins (Isaiah 43:25). It’s possible to apply these promises of pardon to the future Jewish remnant during the coming Tribulation period.

For God sees the whole consummation of the age, “declaring the end from the beginning, and

from ancient times the things that are not yet done” (Isaiah 46:10). Only the Lord can prophesy, and that is what he has done in his word, the Bible. We should read the Bible, believe the Bible and respectfully obey the Bible. The Lord has given us everything we need to know about this life and eternal life. You can trust the Lord!

Magnetic Resonance Imaging, behind the scenes

Editor’s Note: Thomas White is an MRI Technologist at Woodlawn Hospital.

Having an Magnetic Resonance Imaging can be an anxiety-inducing moment in one’s life. We want to ensure that all patients have a positive and safe experience when having their MRIs.

It starts from the moment a patient arrives at our department and registers for their exam. Every patient fills out an MRI screening form that requests pertinent health history before their scan. The goal of this form is to ensure that all patients are safe for the MRI scanner. It also helps the technologists identify which patients may need settings changed on the scanner to safely perform their exam. Not every implant is safe for MRI, and some implants are safe only under certain conditions. We want to place patient safety at the top of the list, starting with identifying what is inside your body.

After reviewing the screening form, a technologist will take the patient to get prepared for the exam. Not all clothing is compatible with an MRI scanner, so we change all patients into a gown prior to their MRI. Any clothing with metal on it or in it has the

potential to harm a patient and burn them. Certain athletic wear may have copper or silver embedded in the threads, which can heat up during the MRI and burn a patient.

After the patient has changed into the appropriate gowns for their exam, they will go back to MRI with a technologist. For patients who may have issues walking, we will provide an MRI-safe wheelchair for use during your MRI. The MRI may pull any metal objects, such as wheelchairs, canes, or walkers, into the scanner, which can harm the patient, the scanner, and the technologist performing the exam. To avoid this, we will always use our MRIsafe wheelchair for those who need it.

However, ensuring safety continues even when we get patients in the scan room. We give every patient an alarm button during their exam. If a patient needs to stop an exam or has any questions, they only need to squeeze it, and the technologist will stop the exam and address their concerns. We monitor every patient throughout their exam, from the moment they check in until the moment they leave.

We always put safety at the forefront of what we do in MRI. So, the next time you come in for a scan and are asked to fill out a screening form or to change into a gown, remember that it is for your safety. You can relax knowing that we are doing everything possible to maintain your safety throughout the entire process of your MRI here at Woodlawn Hospital.

Clays

for Cancer raises $5,400 for Wheels on Fire

In its eighth year of hosting Clays for Cancer to benefit cancer charity Wheels on Fire, the Fulton County Gun Club saw target shooters, auction bidders and patrons just showing support and enjoying camaraderie and competition Saturday, May 6. Those in attendance could support the fundraising effort by participating in the competitive

target event. They could also target shoot.

Those who were not interested in shooting had the opportunity to bid on donated silent auction items.

The day’s activities resulted in a donation of $5,422.40 to Wheels on Fire.

To date, Clays for Cancer has raised more than $36,500 for

the group. Money raised by and donated to Wheels on Fire supports local cancer patients with expenses they face while fighting the disease.

For more information about Wheels on Fire, contact Beaver Dam Church at (574) 893-7052 or visit the Facebook page for Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders.

Boys Golf

The Rochester boys golf team shot a 339 and finished fourth out of 10 teams at the Three Rivers Conference tournament at Rozella Ford Golf Club in Warsaw Saturday.

Noah Riffle and Drew Strasser shot an 80 and 82 respectively to both make the all-TRC team. The top 10 players plus ties made all-conference. Other Rochester scores included J.R. McLochlin’s 84, Ashton Musselman’s 93 and Robert Bozzo’s 94.

The score was a five-stroke improvement from Rochester’s score at Rozella Ford 11 days earlier at the Warsaw Invitational.

Northfield won their second straight TRC title with a 319. Tippecanoe Valley was second with a 335, and Southwood was third with a 336.

Northfield’s Tyson Baer was the medalist with a 72.

Rochester began their week with a win in a three-way match against host Southwood and Manchester at Etna Acres Golf Course in Andrews. Rochester shot a 175, Southwood had a 179 and Manchester had a 198.

Rochester’s J.R. McLochlin shot a 41 to share medalist honors with Southwood’s Griffin Chambers.

Noah Riffle added a 42, Drew Strasser had a 44, Ashton Musselman had a 48 and Robert Bozzo had a 59.

Strasser had a birdie on No. 6, a par-4.

The Rochester JV shot a 227 with Enrique Navarro the low JV scorer with a 54. Girls Tennis Rochester went 0-2 on the week, losing a pair of TRC matches on the road. They are 7-6 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

The week began with a 4-1 loss to Tippecanoe Valley May 9. Taylor Howard and Elizabeth Weaver won at No. 2 doubles

for Rochester’s lone point. They beat Sarah Finney and Madelyn Weaver 7-5, 6-1.

Valley scored first when Lily Ault and Ella Sandbakken beat Olivia Bailey and Audrey Bolinger 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Karegan Callahan nabbed the second point with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Ella McCarter at No. 1 singles.

Howard and Weaver’s win at No. 2 doubles cut the lead to 2-1, but Valley’s Talia Holder clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Rylee Clevenger at No. 3 singles.

Lydia Miller earned the final Valley point, recovering after dropping the second set in a tie break to win a baseline battle with Rochester’s Rily Holloway 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Rochester then lost 4-1 to Maconaquah May 10.

Rylee Clevenger won in straight sets over Zoe Moore at No. 3 singles, but Maconaquah claimed a Three Rivers Conference home win over Rochester Wednesday. Clevenger won 6-4, 6-4.

Ella McCarter and Rily Holloway both lost in straight sets to Molly Tenny and Kiera Rosenow at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Olivia Bailey and Audrey Bolinger lost at No. 1 doubles, and Taylor Howard and Elizabeth Weaver lost at No. 2 doubles by identical 6-4, 6-1 scores.

Rochester finished the regular season with a match at Southwood Monday. The IHSAA sectional draw was Monday night, and sectionals begin today. Rochester will travel to Culver Academy for a four-team sectional that also includes Knox and North Judson.

Softball

Rochester won both of their games last week to extend their winning streak to six and improve their record to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the TRC.

Kylie Coleman had two hits and two RBIs, Aubrey Miller drove in the go-ahead run as part of a four-run second inning and Mia Howdeshell exhibited improved control over the final four innings to lead the Rochester softball team to a 9-3 win over host Maconaquah Wednesday.

Sydney Haughs also had two RBIs on a pair of sacrifice flies, and Emma Howdeshell, Maddi

Heinzmann and Darah Strasser had one RBI each for Rochester.

This marked the first time any player on Rochester’s roster had beaten Maconaquah.

Rochester scored four runs in the top of the second to take a 5-2 lead and never trailed after that.

Emma Howdeshell lined a ground-rule RBI double down the left field line — the ball rolled under the chain-link fence in left field — to make it 2-2 and move Strasser to third. Miller then hit a grounder to third that was bobbled for an error, scoring Strasser and moving Emma Howdeshell to third. Rochester was back up 3-2.

Coleman’s ground single just to the right of second base made it 4-2, and Haughs’ sacrifice fly to center increased the lead to three.

Rochester saw Maconaquah pitcher Blayklee Buman last year when she pitched two hitless innings of relief in a 6-4 Maconaquah win at Fansler Field. Their game plan against her this year was to look away.

“We knew that she could hit her spots,” Rochester coach Jim Coleman said. “So we looked for the ball away. We really tried getting the ball dirty, forcing their defense to get us out. Bunting was another key factor for us coming in, to get the ball down and allow our speed to be a factor. Once we get on base, we’re a tough out.”

And after walking five in the first three innings, Mia Howdeshell walked none in the next three innings.

With help from younger sister Mia in the circle, Emma Howdeshell piloted the high-flying Lady Zs past host Wabash 16-0 in five innings at Honeywell Park Thursday.

Emma Howdeshell went 4 for 4 to highlight Rochester’s 17-hit attack. She had a single, two doubles, a triple and a hit by pitch.

Haughs had three hits and three RBIs, and Kallie Watson and Miller each had three hits and an RBI. Coleman had two hits and two RBIs, and Mylee Heinzmann had two hits and an RBI.

Mia Howdeshell pitched a two-hitter with one walk and five strikeouts. She also had two RBIs at the plate.

Rochester scored six runs in the first inning, giving Mia How-

deshell a cushion before throwing her first pitch.

Meanwhile, Emma Howdeshell, who signed a letter of intent to continue her softball and academic careers at Kalamazoo College Wednesday, carried the offense. She has 40 hits in 16 games.

A scheduled game against LaVille Friday was canceled due to LaVille’s lack of players.

Rochester is 12-4 overall and 6-1 in the TRC. North Miami leads the TRC with a 6-0 mark. North Miami travels to Rochester today for the TRC finale.

Baseball

The Class 2A, No. 7 Zebras reached the brink of an outright TRC title with road wins over Maconaquah Wednesday and Wabash Thursday before a nonconference loss to Fairfield Saturday.

Aaron Huffman teamed up with three relievers on a shutout, and Jake Seuferer homered to help the Class 2A, No. 7 Rochester baseball team beat host Maconaquah 8-0 May 10.

Tarick McGlothin and Brayden Zink each contributed two hits and two RBIs, and Colton Ferverda came off the bench to go 2 for 2 as part of a 10-hit Zebra attack. Seuferer also had two RBIs. Tanner Reinartz doubled, walked twice and drove in a run.

Carson Paulik and Gavin Young also had hits.

Huffman allowed eight hits in four innings. He walked one, hit a batter and fanned seven. McGlothin got the first two outs in the fifth, Paulik pitched one inning, and Young pitched a scoreless seventh. Maconaquah did not score despite collecting 14 base runners.

“We got in a couple jams there earlier in the game that we were able to get out of just by some big plays,” Rochester coach Cory Good said. “Gavin Young made a good throw from right field. Brayden Zink had a nice, diving double play turn. Just timely defense to get us out of some big defense there. … A fair amount of guys tonight, but all of them pitched pretty well.”

Reinartz pitched a three-hitter, and he also had two doubles and two RBIs at the plate as Rochester earned an 11-1 win in five innings over defending TRC champion Wabash Thursday.

“We were pumped,” Reinartz said. “This was one we wanted to get after, and when we got on them, stay down and don’t let off the gas.”

Already leading 1-0, Rochester scored seven runs in the fourth, the last six coming with two outs. They tacked on three more

in the fifth.

McGlothin and Paulik also had two RBIs each. Zink had two hits, one of which was an RBI single to left in the fourth that made it 2-0. Ethan Medina reached base all three times up and scored twice.

Wabash committed two errors, and they led to seven unearned Rochester runs. The biggest error might have occurred in the top of the fourth with Colton Ferverda batting with two on and two out and the Zebras leading 2-0. Ferverda hit a grounder to short on a 1-0 pitch.

They are 15-5 overall and 7-0 in the TRC. They have clinched a share of the TRC title and can clinch it outright by winning one of their final two conference games. They host Peru Monday and North Miami Wednesday.

Rochester has won their first seven TRC games by a combined score of 92-6.

The week ended with a 5-4 loss to Fairfield Saturday. McGlothin went 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored. Reinartz and Medina each had an RBI, and Paulik, Reinartz, Ferverda and Campbell each had a hit. Rochester could not hold on to a 3-0 first-inning lead.

Campbell and McGlothin combined for three hitless innings of relief after Medina allowed five runs (four earned) in the first three innings.

A home game scheduled for earlier Saturday against Winamac was canceled due to wet grounds.

Track

The Rochester boys track team scored in five different events at the Huntington JV Invitational Saturday, including freshman Grant Bailey in both the 800 and the 1,600.

Bailey was seventh in the 800 in 2:10.41 and fourth in the 1,600 in 4:42.90. Harrison Dunwoody was eighth in the 110 hurdles in 18.20 seconds after running an 18.03 in a preliminary heat. Xavier Vance was fifth in the shot put in 41’1½” and Trevor Walley was seventh in the pole vault with a clearance of 9’6”.

Bailey’s 4:42.90 was the fastest 1,600 time for a Zebra freshman since Wesley Meyer 10 years ago and the second fastest for any Zebra freshman in the last 15 years, according to coach Ryan Helt.

Helt also said Dunwoody’s 110 hurdles time was the fastest by a Rochester freshman over the last 15 years. Carlos Plascencia did not place in the 300 hurdles, but his time of 49.35 was the fourth fastest by a Rochester freshman in the last 15 years.
