The annual “Read to the Final Four” is put on each year in the state that hosts the men’s Final Four. The program encourages and inspires third graders to achieve reading growth with several participation options. The main event is an engaging, bracketed reading competition that uses a digital literacy platform, powered by Renaissance myON, to provide access to books and track time

spent reading. Following an initial program from Nov. 10 through Jan. 27 and including around 300 Indiana elementary schools, Caston earned the right to participate in the final 64-team competition, pitting school against school in a match to see which group of students could score more points and move on to the next round. In addition to Caston, the third grade classes from Akron Elementary and Mentone Elementary also were selected to participate in the challenge. Each participating school was given free access to the myON app, downloaded on each Caston student’s iPad. The app contained thousands of books and audio books from which the students

Each child first went through an online assessment to gauge their interests and reading level, which allowed the app to make recommendations tailored to their individual needs. Each student could choose what they wanted to read or listen to and the app automatically logged their time. To compensate for the differing number of students participating from each school, the number of points issued for each minute read was prorated to give a fair representation of the school’s efforts. At the end of the designated reading period, the school garnering more points moved on to the next

round. The kids from Caston won their first three rounds in the bracket, making it all the way to the Elite Eight teams on the board. Akron lost its first round matchup while Mentone made it to the round of 32. “The kids thoroughly enjoyed reading in the competition and discovering books that they weren’t even aware of before,” said Caston teacher Christi Rush. “It was fun seeing their excitement and sharing the books and series with their friends and with us.” At each advancing level, the Continued on page 2
