Junior Achievement provides a financial foundation for students %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 6WDII :ULWHU Junior Achievement has been serving counties in northern Indiana since 1952. Beth Miller, area manager for Fulton County said, “Junior Achievement teaches kids three pillars in life – financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.” JA is currently used in the Rochester and Caston school corporations and is taught to second and third grade students at the elementary level and sixth, seventh and eighth grade students at the middle school. The courses are taught by community volunteers, including Miller, and are five to seven weeks long with class sessions ranging from 30–45 minutes once

a week. The curriculum is aligned to state standards and tailored to the grade being taught. “In second grade the kids learn about their community and how a dollar moves around,” stated Miller. They learn how businesses and government jobs, like firefighters and police officers, help a community; how goods and services are produced; and how taxes support the community. Games and hands on activities are incorporated to add an element of fun. “When you have local volunteers that work in the community they’re able to put their own touch on it,” she said. Third grade JA focuses on financial literacy, including how people manage their money, different forms of currency and why finances are important. Continued on page 3
