Three teachers take 118 years of teaching experience into retirement %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation honored three of its longtime staff members during the school board meeting held Wednesday, Feb. 17.

Each has announced her retirement following this school year.

Between the three of them, they have 118 years of teaching experience, which amazingly were all spent at Tippecanoe Valley.

Sixth-grade science teacher Jane Hunn is putting aside her beakers after 43 total years in education. Hunn began teaching seventh and eighth grade science at Akron Junior High School. When the middle school moved to its

current location, she changed to only eighth-grade science.

In 2012 she had the opportunity to switch to sixth-grade science, which she has taught ever since.

“I have had many supportive colleagues and administrators,” said Hunn. “The support staff make life more pleasant. The students I have had throughout my career have brought joy to my life. I will miss the daily interaction with students with the challenges

and rewards that brings.”

On her future plans, Hunn said, “I have said in the past that I would not retire until I know what I was retiring to, but here I am with no premade plans. I will do service projects in the community.

Travel to ride bikes with my husband is very likely.”

Linda Studebaker also is retiring after 43 1/2 years of teaching.

“I began my teaching career at Akron Elementary as

a third-grade teacher in January of 1978, yes, during the ‘Blizzard of ‘78,’” she recalled.

“It was quite a snowy introduction to teaching. I was present for only nine school days and was paid three times. Teaching was great! After five years in third grade I was promoted to sixth grade. It was fun to teach in the old Akron High School building my parents had attended. At the end of my 17th year of teaching, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School opened.

With hammers and screwdrivers, we moved to Tippecanoe Valley Middle School where I have spent the last 25 years teaching sixth grade math.

Pastor loves seeing lives transformed %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I’ve always enjoyed doing things for others,” stated Patsy Jewell, Rochester. “I think that’s because there was a time I was in need. When I was a young person, I struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. But thanks to two ladies who loved Jesus and showed that love by helping me, I made it to the other side. Now I am a minister and I want to see lives changed by the power of Jesus Christ.”

When Jewell was in her 20s, she hosted Bible studies for people. “I also did services in people’s homes … anything I could do to minister to others.”

She also served in prison ministry for four years. “A group of us

worked with inmates and young people at the correctional facilities at Westville and Putnamville. I went in as a biblical counselor. Of course, I wasn’t allowed to bring my Bible into the visiting area.

But we could have services there from time to time and I enjoyed baptizing some of the young people there.”

Jewell was licensed to the ministry in 2012. She was ordained as a Christian minister in 2013.

“We started the New Beginnings Glorious Church in 2013. The reason we named it ‘New Beginnings’ is that was our goal. We are a non-denominational church that specializes in offering people new lives in Christ.”

Rochester. “We moved to our present location, 205 West 18th St., Rochester, in 2014. We rented the space for a couple years. Then we got the opportunity to buy it. We’ve been there for seven years.”

However, a catastrophe set the church congregation back. “The church garage fell causing the dining room to also cave in. We needed to fix the problem before we could have services there.”

In June the church began to clean up the rubble. “We needed to get the sanctuary in running order and also concentrate on the bathroom facilities and the furnace room. We don’t have enough money to tackle all the renovations, so we are fixing the building little by little.”

Jewell is very impressed by the efforts of Blueprint Construction LLC out of Rochester. “Don Johns coordinated the work and did a fine job getting us functional again.

The crew was amazing … hard workers.”

The church was up and running the first week of February, but they still have some major projects to finance. “We’re praying for a sound system. And we need to do more work on the roof. To get things up to standards, we’ll need about $25,000. Now we are only able to operate on a limited basis.”

However, Jewell admitted they are pretty much building the congregation from scratch again.

“We’ve been closed for a while.

Even reopening, we have to assess who’s coming on a regular basis

Right now, we’re starting with Sunday morning services. We’ll work on other programs as our congregation increases.”

Jewell is very proud of her pastoral staff and the people who attend. “My assistant pastor is Cleophus Mooney. His wife Connie is our secretary-treasurer. Our church body is a friendly group of people who welcomes newcomers.”

Ivy Tech to offer two-day food manager course Ivy Tech Community College is offering an instructor-led training course March 8 and 10 to prepare students to take the Certified Professional Food Manager certification exam. The two-day class will meet in Room M202 of Ivy Tech Kokomo’s Main Building at 1815 E. Morgan St. Indiana Code 410-IAC7-22 requires mandatory certification of at least one person who oversees the food safety operation within each food establishment. This course will prepare individuals to take and pass the 85-question, multiple-choice certification exam. Participants in this course will study sanitation management, food safety hazards, factors that affect food borne illness, personal hygiene, the use and calibration of temperature measuring instruments, and many more topics.

Upon successful completion of the exam, students will receive a certification and their name will be added to the National Registry of Food Managers. The certification is valid for five years. The course fee is $210 and includes the manual, all study materials and the certification exam. The class will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, and Wednesday, March 10, and will be led by instructor Ed Norris of the Indiana Environmental Health Association and retired inspector and trainer with the Indiana State Department of Health Food Protection Program.

Three teachers Continued from page 1 young adults fill my heart with hope for the future. The staff and administration at TVMS, and especially the sixth-grade team have become my second family. We have laughed together and cried many tears.

These are great people who love our students unconditionally and give endlessly.

“It is hard to see this chapter of my career come to an end, but it has been an honor and a privilege to begin and end my teaching career at Tippecanoe Valley. In the past four decades I have had the privilege to instruct many students who have positively impacted our community and have benefited our society. This humbles me.

I went into teaching to change the lives of my students, but instead our students changed the world and me.”

The third longtime staff member to put away her chalk is Marcie Pearson, who has spent 31 years in education.

Pearson was hired by Brett Bogs to teach sixth grade.

Eventually she moved on to the middle school, where she taught sixth-grade social studies for decades before switching to her current role as a sixth-grade language

arts teacher.

“I’ve been embraced and held up by this community,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed working with educators that are truly making a difference.

My students have challenged and amazed me. Teaching has been a career that feeds my soul. It has been an honor and privilege. I will most definitely miss the students. I will miss watching them change over the year and discover more about themselves as they grow. I will miss the connections and relationships. I will miss the magical moments of seeing their successes. And I will miss all of the laughs.

Whether they intend to be funny or not, they have kept me laughing. They have been my joy.”

Former Rochester resident, Raymond J. Casey Jr., 69, Indianapolis, passed away at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2021, at the Eagle Creek Healthcare Center of Indianapolis. He had been declining in health the past two years.

In Toledo, Ohio, Raymond Jay Casey Jr. was born Jan. 10, 1952. He was the treasured son of Raymond J. 5$<021' - Casey Sr. and Bernadine Alice (Harris) Casey. Growing &$6(< -5 up in the Decatur area, he graduated from Bellmont High School in 1970. Ray continued his education at Manchester College, where he pursued his life dream of becoming a teacher. In 1974, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He continued his education and later graduated from Ball State University with a master’s degree in education.

A 35-year teaching veteran, Mr. Casey initiated his teaching career at Rochester High School from 1974-1976. His next assignment was at Connersville High School from 1976-1985. In the fall of 1985, Ray continued his career at Carmel High School. He concluded his career at his Alma mater Bellmont High School back in Decatur from 1992-2009. During his teaching career, Mr. Casey also taught college level courses at IU East at Richmond, IUPUI at Indianapolis, IPFW Fort Wayne and Ivy Tech.

During his years of service to education, with great skill and teaching methods, Mr. Casey maximized the potential of each student. His areas of expertise were speech and theater. Whether it was delivering a keynote speech during state competition or a powerful line during a theatrical presentation, his students presented with poise and great aplomb. With his successes as a speech coach, Mr. Casey was bestowed the coveted Diamond Key Award from the National Forensic League. He was an Indiana Thespian director and he annually planned summer field trips to New York City’s Theater District. Coach Casey also enjoyed mentoring tennis and football teams over the years.

Near Milford, at the Camp Alexander Mack Chapel, Raymond married the love of his life, Miss Margaret Lynne “Peggy” Frettinger on July 12, 1981.

They shared nearly four decades of life’s adventures.

Peggy and Ray enjoyed traveling, especially to Seattle. They were also history buffs and made a visit to Gettysburg. A man who embraced all types of sports, he followed the Indianapolis Colts and the Boston Celtics. Keeping up with technology, he loved to stream documentaries after retiring. With appreciation for the simplicity of life, Ray relaxed on the back deck observing his backyard bird friends feeding in their natural habitat. “Mr. Santa Claus” was proud to adorn his Santa suit, attending many parties and homes of friends, to delight everyone with his presence spreading cheer during the holidays.

Ray’s favorite role in life was titled “Grampy.” Proud to oversee three generations, Grampy was delighted with the visits from his precious granddaughters. The holidays and special family celebrations were some of his happiest times.

Left to cherish Ray’s memory are his wife Peggy at home; his children, Paul Ashford Casey of Long Beach, Miss., Dawn Marie Eschenbach (Cary), Redmond, Wash., Capt. Joel R. Casey (Tara), Brownsburg, and Dustin J. Casey, Bradenton, Fla.; his granddaughters, Lainey Casey, Isla Margaret Casey and Audie Kayanne Casey; nieces, Cheryl Palm Lenington (John), Lisa Levingston and Charlene McCready White; a nephew, Shawn McCready; his mother-in-law, Thelma Frettinger, Rochester; a sister-in-law, Patricia Eads, Rochester; and a brother-in-law, Daniel Frettinger (Imma), Valley View, Texas.

Preceding Ray in death are his parents; half siblings, Mona Mae Palm McCready and Leo Palm; sister-in-law, Susan E. Frettinger; and father-in-law, Frank E. Frettinger.

A celebration of the life of Raymond Jay Casey Jr. will be held at 1 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester. Pastor Rodney A. Eiler will officiate. Friends may visit with his family from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. COVID state guidelines will be observed regarding masking and social distancing. Burial will follow in Rochester’s IOOF Cemetery.

Raymond J. Casey’s life celebration will be live-streamed at 1 p.m. EST Saturday, Feb. 27. Log on to Facebook and search “JD Good” to view the service.

Gail Lynne Hayden, 69, Rochester, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, surrounded by her loving family.

On Jan. 10, 1952, Gail L. Bathrick was born in Rochester. She was a treasured daughter of Fay and Mildred Grossenbacher Bathrick. Gail was the youngest of the nine Bathrick siblings. She graduated from *$,/ /<11( Rochester High School with her class in 1970. +$<'(1 Left to cherish Gail’s memory are her husband Mark of 48 years; her children, Mark Jr. (Misti) Hayden and Gretchen (Erik) Murphy; grandchildren, Kaylea Stump, Evan Murphy, Sara Avery, Dakota Hayden and Cora Hayden; siblings, Arlene Hounshell, Carolyn (Jim) Wagoner, Marilyn Townsend, Karen (Dan) Gibson and Keith (Carolyn) Bathrick; and mother-in-law, Dolores Hayden. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Gail was greeted in heaven by her parents; brothers, Kenny and Gordy; sister, Ardith Adams; and her father-in-law, Jack Hayden.

A private family service celebrating Gail’s life will be held at the First Christian Church, Rochester. Chaplain Jason See will officiate.

Carolyn Johnson Family Matriarch Carolyn Johnson, 80, Rochester, was surrounded by her family when she passed away at 2:55 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 19, 2021, at her home.

On March 26, 1940, Carolyn Braden was born in Logansport. She was the treasured daughter of Raymond and Naomi Gordon Braden. Growing up she shared her childhood with a brother, Lewis. Carolyn &$52/<1 was a member of the Aubbeenaubbee Township High -2+1621 School Class of 1958.

In Rochester, Carolyn and Gerald L. “Jerry” Johnson were married July 30, 1965. They shared more than 47 years of life’s adventures. Carolyn brought two daughters, Terri and Debbie, blending their family with the new editions of Robin and Roger. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings two more generations.

Carolyn grew up on a dairy farm, where she developed a strong work ethic. Gifted with her hands, she crocheted beautiful doilies and gifts of warmth like afghans for her family and special friends. She was an amazing cook, best known for her crispy fried chicken and steamy hot gravy tacos. No recipes needed for her special creations. She annually planted flowers around her home to add color to the landscape. Each spring she planted the truck patch garden, then canned and froze the bountiful harvest, including tomatoes and tomato juice. Most savored by her family was the delicious sweet strawberry jam. To relax, Carolyn loved a good night of spirited game of bingo with Winette.

As the matriarch of the Johnson family, Grandma Carolyn was proud to oversee four generations. She looked forward to the visits of the grands and the greats. The holidays and special family celebrations were when a lifetime of memories were made.

Left to cherish Carolyn’s memory are three daughters, Robin Williams and her significant other John Albright of Culver, Terri Brooks and husband Bill of Wolcott and Debbie Carman and husband Mike of Colorado; a son, Roger Johnson and wife Jennifer of Rochester; six grandchildren, Chad and Missy Conwell, Jason and Mindy Conwell, Aaron Johnson, Adrienne Johnson, Zachary Boyd and Austin Carman; seven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Levi, Josh, Kaleb, Ryder, Rayland and Reagan; and a brother, Lewis Braden and wife Ursula of Leiters Ford.

Preceding Carolyn in death are her parents, Raymond and Naomi Braden; beloved husband, Jerry Johnson; an infant son, Edward Lee; her heart sister and coffee buddy, Angie Lytle Nichols Dec. 26, 2020; and her canine companion, Pepper the silver Schnauzer.

To Carolyn’s caregivers, Diann, Kelly, Makayla, Katie, Margy and Alivia, thank you for allowing our Mom to enjoy the comfort of her home at the time of her declining health. We’re grateful for the wonderful care and love you conveyed to her.

Health Department responds to inclement weather’s impact Indiana Department of Health announced recently Hoosiers who have COVID-19 vaccine appointments scheduled this week should be aware inclement weather could impact clinic operations. The state is working with local vaccination sites to reschedule appointments as needed.

Individuals whose appointments are impacted will be notified by email or text message about the need to reschedule, which can be done by calling 211.

The state is working to ensure Hoosiers who are scheduled to receive their second dose of vaccine still receive the dose within the appropriate time frame. A second dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines that is administered within 42 days of the first dose still provides full immunity to COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hoosiers age 65 and older, along with health care workers, long-term care residents and first responders who are regularly called to the scene of an emergency to render medical assistance, are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. To schedule, visit hourshot.in.gov or call 211 if you do not have access to a computer or require assistance. Individuals must show proof they live or work in Indiana and meet the eligibility criteria to receive a vaccine.

As of mid-February, 816,758 Hoosiers have received a first dose of vaccine and 336,827 are fully vaccinated.

Additionally, the Department of Health recently announced 817 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at state and private laboratories. That brings to 649,652 the number of Indiana residents now known to have had the novel coronavirus following corrections to the previous day’s dashboard.

A total of 11,765 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of 19 from the previous day. Another 426 probable deaths have been reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients for whom no positive test is on record.

To date, 3,053,929 unique individuals have been tested in Indiana, up from 3,049,828 Feb. 14. A total of 7,573,633 tests, including repeat tests for unique individuals, have been reported to the state Department of Health since Feb. 26, 2020.

Let’s study the Bible The prayer of Jesus Read John 17:1-26 “These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven.” (John 17:1)

We come now to one of the most remarkable chapters in the Bible.

In John 17:1-26 is the longest prayer in the Bible, although it would take you only three minutes to read it. I think that is a good indication of the length of public prayers. If you can’t say

all you’ve got to say in three minutes, then maybe you have got too much to say.

Someone has aptly termed this chapter “The Holy of Holies of John’s Gospel.” We have the privilege of hearing God the son conversing with God the father. You

could spend many weeks meditating on the truths in this chapter, but here we can only touch upon the highlights.

I want you %< 5(9 521 to notice it 385.(< is not out of line nor even a mark of selfishness to pray for one’s self. I believe when you and I go to God in prayer, we need to get our own hearts and lives right with God. We need to get in tune with heaven, as it were. Every instrument should be tuned up before it is played. Before you and I begin to pray for others, we need to pray for ourselves. That is not selfishness; it is essential.

In this, his high priestly prayer, Jesus prayed for himself (John 17:1–5), his disciples (John 17: 6–19), and all of his church (John 17: 20–26).

The prayer reveals our Lord’s spiritual priorities: glorifying the father, the unity of the church, the sanctity of the church, and the winning of a lost world to Christ.

Are these priorities in your life?

It also reveals the gifts he has given his people: eternal life, the word, and his glory. But notice believers are the father’s gift to Jesus, just as Jesus is the father’s love gift to us (John 3:16). It is all of grace.

The word “world” appears 19 times in this prayer, for this prayer tells us how to “overcome the world” (John 16:33). We must seek God’s glory first, experience his joy, be sanctified by the word of God, seek to win the lost, and encourage the unity of God’s people.

“Glory” is another key word.

Christ laid aside his glory to come to earth, glorified God on earth, and was glorified when he returned to heaven. Jesus Christ is glorified in his church and has shared his glory with the church.

We already have the glory; we are just waiting for it to be fully revealed (Romans 8:18–21, 30).

The Scottish Reformer John Knox had this prayer (John 17:126) read to him daily during his last illness. But we would benefit by starting now to read it and meditate on it. What a treasury of truth it is.

Someone has said, “One thing we can’t do about God’s will — we can’t escape our responsibility.”

Rochester Youth Baseball League accepting registrations Registration is now open for the 2021 Rochester Youth Baseball League. Players must be 4 years old by Jan. 1, 2021.

The sign up registration deadline is Saturday, April 11. A $25 late fee will be added for registrations submitted after April 3, and no registrations will be accepted after April 11. No refunds will be given.

All players for the RYBL 2021 season must attend player assessments, with the exception of those playing tee-ball. A 6-yearold may try out for Pony League, 8-year-old for Minor League and 10-year-old for Major League. The league encourages players stay in their appropriate age group.

League fees include a hat, shirt and a single treat at the concession stand on game day. Tee-ball (4-6 years) is $50; Pony League (7-8) $60; Minor League (9-10) $60; and Major League (11-12) $60. There is a $150 maximum fee per family.

Tryouts will be held Sunday, April 11. All players will need to attend since there was not a season last year. If your child will be playing tee-ball they do not need to attend tryouts. Tryout times will be announced via the RYBL social media accounts.

Opening day for Major, Minor, Pony and tee-ball will be Friday, May 7.

Lisa Hooley, head teacher at His Kids! explained, “Since COVID, we’ve had to think outside the box and re-invent many aspects of what we do, but sometimes change is good.”

One of the good things that came about was combining the two classes, the 3 year olds and the pre–K into one class. Co–teacher Melva Stamberger shared, “It’s nice to see the older kids help the younger ones.”

Currently the 3 year olds attend class two days a week and pre–K class attends three days a week.

Since Hooley and Stamberger found so much value in combining the two classes, it was decided to keep the combo going and up the days of attendance for the 2021–22 school year to three days a week for

the 3 year olds and five days a week for the pre–K. Students are in attendance from 8:30–11:15 a.m. with a combined total of 16 kids.

The theme based curriculum is created by the teachers with room for flexibility to suit the kids. Each month a new theme is explored with an accompanying Bible story and verse.

“Some children learn through pretend play, puzzles, stories, or active play; so, we try to introduce whatever the theme is through all the different ways of learning,” Hooley said.

“I love seeing the kids reactions because, to them, everything is new.

We get to watch them experience so many firsts,” stated Hooley.

Stamberger enjoys the progressions the kids make along the way, like watching the kids grow, the achievement of writing their name for the first time, seeing decision making skills improve or watching a shy child find her comfort zone.

Expanding telehealth services %\ 6(1 67$&(< '21$72 ,QGLDQD 6WDWH 6HQDWH In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, health care providers have been temporarily permitted to expand their services by utilizing virtual consultations, known as telehealth, to provide Hoosiers with more accessibility to safe and convenient health care.

Our state has greatly benefited from a temporary expansion of telehealth services, and Senate Bill 3 would ensure Hoosiers main-

tain this access to improved health care post-pandemic.

If signed into law, SB 3 would put legal safeguards in place for Hoosiers receiving virtual care and require telehealth medical records to be created and maintained under the same standards of practice patients in an in-person setting receive.

SB 3 would also expand the application of the telehealth

statute currently in place to include more licensed practitioners and specify the various activities that would qualify as health care services under telehealth law.

I am pleased to have voted in support of SB 3, and I look forward to seeing this bill further improve Hoosiers’ access to affordable and high-quality health care.

SB 3 recently received unanimous support in the Senate and will now move to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Support FFA members during FFA week and year-round %\ %58&( .(77/(5 'LUHFWRU ,QGLDQD 6WDWH 'HSDUWPHQW RI $JULFXOWXUH “ F F A makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and %58&( .(77/(5 career success through agricultural education.” This FFA mission statement is a testament to our members, chapters, advisors and supporters everywhere.

National FFA week starts Monday, Feb. 20. It is held annually on the last full week in February. This year it will look unlike any other FFA week, showcasing virtual “events” rather than blue and gold filling the school halls or a pancake breakfast made by members for all the teachers. Our more than 12,000 Indiana FFA members have found ways to still make it special, nonetheless.

The celebrations this week will include virtual visits from Indiana FFA state officers to FFA chapters across the state. Like every year, this FFA week will also include a proclamation from Indiana legislators who are set to recognize the importance of FFA week and supporting our students. FFA students from across the state will also have the opportunity to learn from agriculture leaders about creating opportunities to tell their story in agriculture and to stand up for agricultural practices on the local, state and federal level with four virtual FFA Advocacy days. Even though this FFA week is certain to look unlike any other, these resilient students have found a way to keep FFA traditions alive.

We cannot honor and celebrate National FFA Week without remembering former Indiana FFA Association Director Rob Hays, who passed away last summer. Rob embodied everything FFA is and stands for and is dearly missed in our department and throughout the state. Rob was most passionate about building leaders, something FFA does so well.

The Indiana State Department

of Agriculture and Indiana FFA Association believe leadership development and equipping members with the skills they need to succeed at any stage of life is crucial. Recently we partnered with Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch’s office to develop Indiana’s Rural Road to Recovery plan, designed to get our state back on track following the pandemic. One priority outlined in our rural road to recovery is to strengthen the pipeline of individuals seeking careers in agriculture. FFA is a great way to get students learning and involved in agriculture-related careers.

Many times I have heard it said FFA members are some of the hardest working, most eager students on a job or in an internship. I am certain that is due in large part to FFA’s leadership and learning model along with the positive support from advisors and parents.

I want to encourage businesses and post-secondary educational institutions to take a deeper look into FFA members as they are moving into careers or furthering their education. Beyond leadership skills, FFA members learn so much about agriculture, food science, technology and a variety of other disciplines preparing them for success.

I further encourage business and community leaders to ask themselves how they can promote youth education or support their local FFA chapter. Our local FFA chapters and schools need business’s participation for events and to expand learning opportunities.

This is also a great way to establish a connection with the next generation of community leaders, which could lead to job shadowing or an internship.

FFA members exhibit the value of hard work, education and strong leadership instilled in them from the very beginning of their membership and make excellent additions to any workforce or team. At the Indiana State Department of Agriculture we feel that firsthand because almost half of our 60 employees were FFA members. During FFA week I encourage others to think, when was the last time I volunteered with my local FFA chapter?

By working together and supporting our local chapters we can take FFA and Indiana’s 12,000 FFA members to the next level.

Two added to Ivy Tech board of trustees Two Kokomo area leaders have been named to the Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Campus Board of Trustees.

Karen McLean, regional public affairs manager for Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) and the Rev. Dr. William J. Smith Jr., pastor of Second Missionary Baptist Church, were recently appointed by the Ivy Tech State Board of Trustees to three-year terms as at-large members of the Kokomo Service Area board. The regional board serves Cass, Fulton, Howard, Miami and Tipton counties.

“These two community leaders are welcome additions to our board,” said Dean McCurdy, chancellor of Ivy Tech Kokomo.

“With their years of service to the people of our region, Karen and William provide important input as the board and the Ko-

komo Service Area faculty and staff work to better serve our students and meet the needs of the businesses and industries in our region.”

Members of Ivy Tech’s 18 campus boards have four essential responsibilities. These include analyzing educational needs and opportunities in the region, approving regional programming and recommending to the state board a plan to provide education and workforce development programs for the region, approving the region’s budget, and recommending methods for acquiring facilities and equipment needed to deliver regional programs.

McLean is a Kokomo native who has spent most of her career as a local small business owner.

She is an alumna of Ivy Tech Kokomo, having earned an associate’s degree in computer pro-

gramming technology here and later earned a bachelor’s degree in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University. In 2016, she was honored with the Ivy Tech Distinguished Alumni Award.

In recent years, McLean served two chambers of commerce, working as the events and operations manager in Greenwood and as the Alliance operations and chamber manager for the Greater Kokomo Economic Development Alliance, before joining NIPSCO. In the past four years, she has actively engaged with the Ivy Tech Kokomo Service Area, assisting with the Kokomo Campus Transformation from the early planning stages to serving as chair of the capital campaign.

“I am honored to contribute my skill sets and passion for Ivy

Tech’s workforce role as a member of the board,” McLean said.

“NIPSCO is a strong supporter of education and economic development growth. As a volunteer, I appreciate representing NIPSCO in the Ivy Tech Kokomo region.”

Smith, a native of Mathews County, Va., served churches in southwest Virginia and North Carolina before being a called to the pulpit of Kokomo’s Second Missionary Baptist Church in July 2015. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Organizational Leadership and a Master of Arts degree from Virginia University and Seminary in Lynchburg, Va., going on to earn a Doctorate of Ministry degree at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio.

With a passion for preaching, teaching, and administration,

Smith said he is committed to helping catapult Second Baptist “to be the church that raises the village (community) through the process of I.O.U. (inreach, outreach, and upreach). Most recently, under Smith’s leadership, Second Baptist started Embracing Hope of Howard County, Ind., a community development corporation that is renovating the long-vacant Douglass School, opened in 1920 as a segregated school for Kokomo’s AfricanAmerican children, to serve as a community cultural center and to develop land for community transitional housing.

“I look forward to working with this diverse group of individuals to ensure Ivy Tech continues to grow so it may fulfill its mission and provide an even greater educational experience for students in our community,” Smith said.

The run on guns and ammo appears to have been initially set off in the spring by the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions and at first appeared similar to runs on other consumer goods, such as toilet paper and paper towels.

But the unease caused by those events was followed by a summer of social unrest, which was followed by a presidential election season, which was in turn followed by the tumultuous events of Jan. 6 at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Steve Ellis, the owner of Top Guns, said the ammo rush started at his shop in February 2020 when news reports started projecting the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rumored shutdowns and then stay-at-home orders kicked off a

fire storm of buying, Ellis said. At his shop, some 4.5 million rounds went out the door in just 10 days.

“I think some were concerned that there might be a lack of availability of food, and people wanted to be able to hunt if they wanted and also be able to defend what they had if it came to that,” Ellis said.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearms industry trade group, estimates 6.5 million new owners bought guns in 2020.

The inordinate demand has resulted in most ammunition doubling in price, or more, at local gun shops and climbing even higher on secondary markets, such as GunBroker, a national online auction site.

The price hikes, which have only seemed to escalate, are frustrating for both shooters and for people in the industry.

For established dealers such as Top Guns that have loyal customer bases, retail price increases – when the store can get their hands on ammo – are the result of a hyperdriven market, not profiteering, Ellis said.

“A branded box of ammo I used to buy for $7 and sell for $9 to $10, I’m paying upward of $25 for that box of ammo now,” Ellis said. “And I’m elated to do it.”

“It is unlikely we’ll see an end to this, if we’re lucky, in the next year or year and a half,” Ellis said. “And

that’s if nothing stupid happens between now and then. But, as we’ve seen, stupid has been the norm lately.”

Nationally, the forecast is much the same. Manufacturers say they are upping ammunition production and pushing more product out their doors than in years past, but they just can’t keep up.

For example, Vista Outdoor – owner of well-known brands such as Federal, CCI and Speer – in November reported it had back orders that will extend out a year and represent a billion dollars at wholesale prices.

Other large American makers such as Winchester and Hornady say they, too, are making and shipping ammunition as fast as they can. Jason Hornady, vice president of Hornady Ammunition Manufacturing, in a YouTube video posted a month ago said production has been running full tilt for months but demand is outstripping capacity.

Holcomb announces results of bus safety patrols Last week, Indiana Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced the results of the increased school bus safety patrols conducted last fall by Indiana law enforcement agencies.

During the two-month mobilization, officers issued a total of 1,553 warnings and 1,701 citations. Of those, 201 were for stoparm violations.

The extra patrols were funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the state’s Stop Arm Violation Enforcement program. The initiative was developed by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in 2019 to provide safe transportation routes for Hoosier students.

“Making sure that students

can go to and from school safely is a top priority, but it requires cooperation from the motoring public,” Holcomb said. “Every driver has a responsibility to pay attention to the road and drive cautiously around buses, in school zones and areas where children may be present.”

In total, 2,481 additional patrols were conducted along bus stops and routes, which were identified by coordinating with local bus drivers and school transportation officials.

In addition to stop-arm violations, officers cited 852 drivers for speeding, 112 for driving with a suspended license and 94 for not wearing a seat belt.

“We’re not seeing an end,” Vista Outdoor CEO Chris Metz told American Rifleman magazine in December.

“We talk to a big database of users on a monthly basis, and one thing we’re noting is that what we call ‘heavy shooters,’ those who shoot 10,000 rounds or more per year, a lot of them haven’t been purchasing,” Metz said. “They’ve seen the frenzied activity and are holding back in hopes it’ll subside.

“Well, we all know what’s going to happen when they work through their stockpiles and at some point, come back to the market. So, no, we don’t foresee any slowdown in the demand in 2021.”

“Driving past a stopped school bus is not only illegal, it’s a matter of life or death,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI executive director. “Motorists need to slow down, put away the distractions and watch for buses at all times. Lives depend on it.”

In Indiana, it’s against the law for motorists to pass a bus that’s stopped and has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended.

This applies to all roads, with one exception: On multi-lane roads divided by a physical barrier, vehicles traveling the opposite direction of the bus may proceed with due caution.

SAVE patrols are scheduled to resume this spring for schools that are meeting in person. They were put on hold last March due to the pandemic.

ICJI is currently accepting applications for the next round of SAVE grant funding from Indiana law enforcement agencies.

Applications are due by noon Friday, Feb. 26.

Birds and other indicators of spring Each day the sun rises a few minutes earlier.

Each day is a few minutes longer than the day before. The difference in length of day isn’t noticeable from one day to the next, but it is noticeable from one week to the next.

This week is more wintry than any week in January. The temperature was below 10 degrees this morning, colder than any day I remember in January. There’s several inches of snow. Lakes and all but the swiftest flowing rivers are ice covered, frozen over. There are men ice fishing.

The birds coming to my bird feeders are the same species, probably the same birds that have been coming to the feeders all winter. There are blackcapped chickadees, tufted titmice, white-breasted nuthatches,

downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, occasionally a hairy woodpecker. There are goldfinches in winter plumage, house sparrows, tree sparrows, two or three whitecrowned sparrows, cardinals and blue jays and, intermittently, two mourning doves.

The birds I see when I’m out are year-rounders, summer and winter birds, crows, red-tailed hawks and kestrels. When I’ve gone to a lake or river where there is open water I’ve seen Canada geese, mallards, mute swans and sandhill cranes. Once this winter, last year not this, two sandhill cranes landed in our pasture.

I want to see some birds I have not seen this winter, migrants, indicators of spring. I want to see robins and bluebirds and indigo buntings and warblers. My older daughter did see three robins in our yard a few weeks ago, but I didn’t see them. I wrote about them in one of my articles, however, and soon after I wrote the article, I received an email from someone telling me they had recently seen six robins.

I want to see more waterfowl.

I’ve seen Canada geese. I recently received an email about a flock of ducks, with a picture, as I received the email about robins.

The ducks were goldeneyes. Or were they buffleheads? I don’t remember.

I want to see song sparrows, in the bushes in our yard, and chipping sparrows. When I go driving on country roads, I want to see meadowlarks and vesper sparrows and field sparrows. I want to see grackles and red-winged blackbirds. I’d even like to see cowbirds. Cowbirds are spring birds, indicators of spring. I want to see barn swallows flying in and out of our barn.

I’ve seen a red-tailed hawk now and then all winter, and a kestrel, usually perched on a power line or pole. I’d like to see more of each. I’d like to see turkey vultures, circling high in the sky or on the ground along the side of a road, though when I see them along the side of the road, they’re feeding on some critter that’s been killed on the road and I always feel sorry for the road kill whether it’s a raccoon or an opos-

12. Make sure all state returns are sent to the correct P.O. Box. Mail is processed by P.O. Box from April-June with top priority being individual tax returns.

13. If paying by check, include the liability number or tax period on the check. For personal checks submitted for businesses, include the business name on the check.

14. Be sure to attach all W-2’s and 1099s to your return.

15. Be sure to sign the return.

Indiana individual tax season has begun ,QGLDQD 'HSDUWPHQW RI 5HYHQXH The Indiana Department of Revenue is now accepting tax filings for the 2021 individual income tax season. Indiana filers have from now until April 15 to file their individual income tax returns and pay any taxes owed.

“The DOR team has skillfully prepared all our systems and operations for this year’s individual tax filing season,” announced DOR Commissioner Bob Grennes. “This is our busiest time of year, and we look forward to serving millions of our fellow Hoosiers with the processing of their returns, payments and refunds.”

Whenever possible, DOR recommends electronic filing and payment as electronic processing is higher quality and much quicker than paper processes. Refunds resulting from electronic filings are issued up to four times faster than paper returns, on average under 14 days.

As part of the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, they offer free tax preparation and other services to eligible residents.

• Indy Free Tax Prep is a network of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites through the United Way of Central Indiana offering free tax preparation to individuals and families with a combined household income of $66,000 or less.

• The Indiana Legal Services Low Income Taxpayer Clinic serves the community by providing free legal assistance to Indiana taxpayers involved in disputes with the IRS. Going to need more time to file a return? Individuals who are not able to file by the April 15 deadline can file an extension directly with DOR or with the IRS. If the IRS extension is granted, the Indiana extension is automatically granted. A timely filed extension moves the federal tax filing deadline to Oct. 15 and the Indiana filing deadline to Nov, 15.

It is important to note the extension only shifts the filing deadline and not the payment deadline. Ninety percent of the taxes owed are still required to be paid by April 15, to avoid penalties and interest.

More than $100 million going to rural communities The Indiana Department of Transportation announced today that $100.8 million in federal transportation funding is being awarded to 54 cities, towns and counties in rural portions of Indiana to invest in local road and bridge improvements as well as sidewalk and trail projects. Combined with local funds, approximately $124.9 million is being invested in infrastructure in communities receiving funds.

Types of projects receiving funds include 32 bridge rehabilitation/replacement projects; 11 resurfacing/reconstruction projects; 6 Transportation Alternative Program projects that include work such as sidewalks, ADA ramps, and trails; and 5 traffic safety projects.

“Local transportation improvements are critical to growing and enhancing Indiana’s communities,” INDOT Commissioner Joe McGuinness said. “Our sustained commitment to modernizing local roads and bridges, adding sidewalks, and growing our trail networks sends a clear message

that we’re building cities, towns and counties that are primed to attract and retain talent and spur job growth in the 21st century economy.”

For this latest round of funding, rural communities will design, develop and purchase land for projects that would be bid during the fiscal year beginning July 2025.

While the funds awarded now are dedicated to construction, INDOT will be financially participating in design, engineering, and right of way acquisition components of these projects.

INDOT dedicates approximately 25 percent of its federal highway funds to supporting local projects each year. Metropolitan Planning Organizations distribute those funds to cities, towns, and counties within the state’s larger urbanized areas while INDOT distributes funds outside MPO areas.

Communities must pay at least 20 percent in local matching funds and meet other federal require-

ments to receive federal funding.

Rural communities were invited to submit project applications to INDOT for potential funding during a call for projects announced in October 2020.

Indiana Department of Health announced recently Hoosiers age 60 and older are now eligible to receive a free COVID-19 vaccine. This expansion of eligibility makes the vaccine available to an additional 432,000 Hoosiers.

Due to limited vaccine supplies nationally, Indiana has prioritized health care workers, first responders and those who are most vulnerable in its vaccine rollout.

Individuals age 60 and older account for more than 22% of the state’s population but 64% of the COVID-19 hospitalizations and 93.3% of the deaths.

Vaccine appointments for this newly eligible population will be available during the next four to six weeks to align with the state receiving its expected weekly vaccine allocation. Hoosiers who cannot find an appointment at the nearest location are encouraged to look at other sites in neighboring counties. Appointments are being added regularly as vaccine supplies permit.

To schedule a vaccine, visit ourshot.in.gov and select a location from one of more than 370 clinics around the state. Hoosiers who do not have a computer or cellphone or those who need assistance scheduling an appointment can call 211 or contact one of Indiana’s Area Agencies on Aging or AARP. Nearly 70 libraries around the state also are helping Hoosiers schedule their appointments.

Vaccination clinics that are part of the federal vaccine program, including those at Walmart, Sam’s Club and Kroger, appear on the clinic map at ourshot.in.gov but are scheduled through those retailers’ platforms, not through the state centralized system.

To date, more than 60% of eligible Hoosiers have scheduled an appointment to be vaccinated against COVID-19. As of Monday, 893,246 Hoosiers have received a first dose of vaccine and 440,028 are fully vaccinated.

Supervisor election and appointment at SWCD annual meeting Three Fulton County residents will take the supervisor’s oath of office at the 2021 annual meeting of the Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District. The public is invited to attend via a Zoom meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, March 1.

Voting will be open from 10-11 a.m. One position has recently been filled by appointment from Indiana’s State Soil Conservation Board. Elections for a second and third position will be held during the annual meeting. Two supervisors will serve a three-year term and one supervisor will serve a oneyear term.

Matt Harsh has served as an SWCD supervisor for the last 15 years and has farmed for the last 12 years. He brings a wealth of experience to the board. He is a conservation farmer with an emphasis on sustainability through the use of no-till, cover crops, 0$77 +$56+ nutrient management and crop rotation. He is a past chairman of the SWCD board of supervisors, is active in the Fulton County 4-H program and currently serves as the Fulton County SWCD vicechairman. The SWCD election committee submitted Matt’s name to the State Soil Conservation Board for re-appointment for a three-year term and he has been appointed by the SSCB. Harsh will be sworn in as an appointed supervisor to the Fulton County SWCD at the annual meeting.

Supervisor/Secretary/Treasurer Ross Burdge is up for re-election this year. He is a lifelong resident of Fulton County. He and his wife, Priscilla, live on their Henry Township farm. He began farming in 1964 and has been no-tilling since 1981.

He has been committed 5266 %85'*( to never-till since 2005 and has used cover crops for several years. Burdge, who has recently become semi-retired, served as a SWCD supervisor in the mid-1980s and currently since 2006. He is seeking re-election for a three-year term.

The second supervisor position to be

voted on will fill the remaining one-year term currently held by Jennifer Richter. She has been a resident of Fulton County her entire life. She has lived in Liberty Township with her husband, Brian, for the last 28 years. They have two sons, Nicolas and -(11,)(5 Blake. Together, they 5,&+7(5 raise corn, soybeans and wheat. Crop rotation and no-tilling soybeans have been conservation practices used in their farming. The goal is to help reduce erosion and promote better soil health. A vacancy in the position of an elected supervisor occurred in 2020 due to a resignation.

The SWCD recommended Richter to the Indiana State Soil Conservation Board to fill the position. Richter was appointed by the SSCB to serve until the district’s next annual meeting, which will be held at 10 a.m.

The SWCD recommends Kyle Riffle for election. He grew up in Fulton County and was a 2010 graduate from Tippecanoe Valley High School. He then attended Purdue University where he majored in agriculture systems management. After his graduation from Purdue, Riffle returned to .</( 5,))/( the family farm, where he now farms full time with his father, Hank Riffle.

The farm is located near Akron and is solely a grain operation. Corn and soybeans are the most common crops grown, but cereal rye is also grown to harvest seeds for additional cover crops. From just a few acres of cereal rye cover crop in 2014, Riffle Farms now plants a quarter of their acres with cover crop each year. These cover crops increased organic matter, created a more stable soil that better holds nutrients, decreased erosion and overall improved soil health all leading to increased yield benefits.

In the 1980’s Kyle’s Grandpa Riffle plowed every acre he farmed. In 1991, Hank began farming full-time and most of the acres became no-till except for zone-till coul-

Today, Riffle Farms continues as mostly no-till with the exception of a vertical tillage pass through specific soil types of acres being planted to soybeans and to work in the cereal rye cover crop.

Kyle is passionate about soil and water conservation because he wants to continue to be a part of and see the improvements that a decrease in tillage can have in our soils. He remembers hearing stories as a kid of “sandy snow drifts” that happened after an especially sandy, lighter soiled field was plowed. It doesn’t happen like that today because more farmers are aware of cover crops, decreased tillage needs and other conservation practices to prevent these odd “drifts.” Although

stewardship of the land often requires extra management steps, Kyle feels it’s worth the time and effort so his family can continue to farm this land for generations to come.

Supervisor elections will be conducted via a Zoom annual meeting from 10-11 a.m.

Top soil judgers recognized One of the important tasks of our Soil & Water Conservation District is to educate the public about our soil and water resources. Each fall, we partner with local high school agriculture programs to promote soils evaluation.

Soil judgers compete in a tournament like series of competitions that start at the county level, progress to the area events and hopefully, the state or national level.

The county contest was held on the Maurice Horn farm just south of Rochester in the fall of 2019. Our awards are sponsored by the First National Bank of Monterey, represented by bank president, Alan Chesser.

Receiving plaques from the SWCD, the top four individuals in the county contest were: fourth, Haley Jones; third, Trent Reinholt; second, Jesse Shriver; and for the second consecutive year, our high individual was Dryden Vance. In addition Dryden will receive $50 from First National.

That team went on to represent Rochester in the area contest held in Carroll County,

where they placed third as a team and were led by Trent with a second place individual finish. This qualified them to compete at the state contest where they placed second as a team with Dryden, Trent and Haley all placing in the top 10 individually. Those students were competing in the masters division, having previously attended the national event.

Rochester FFA also had success in the senior division placing fourth at the area contest with Luke Wortley, third individually, and Payton McTaggart, seventh. Other team members were Ashley Haselby and Keegan Reinholt. At the state event held in Hamilton County, they again came through with excellent results with a team finish of eighth qualifying them to advance to Oklahoma in May for the national contest. Individually, Luke had an outstanding day finishing third.

Their success in this challenging event would not have been possible without a lot of practice sessions, hard work and the leadership of their FFA advisor Justin Pearson.

Associate supervisors help bring projects and events to Fulton County The board may appoint associate supervisors to assist in performing duties in each district. Associate supervisors are nonvoting members of the board and may not hold officer positions on the board. (IC 14-4-32-4 10.5) Ryan Ranstead attended the Feb. 2 SWCD meeting and agreed at that time to serve as an associate supervisor. In his own words, Ranstead told us: “I have resided in the Richland Township of Fulton County my entire life, where I grew up and still help my family farm corn 5<$1 and soybeans. I attended 5$167($' Rochester High School and went on to attend Ivy Tech in Kokomo, where I achieved my degree in ag business management.

I began working for Ceres Solutions in 2014 and am currently the account relationship manager

and assistant location manager at the Rochester branch. Fulton County Commissioner Steve Metzger was elected as an SWCD supervisor in 2014 and served until he took office as a Fulton County commissioner in 2017. Metzger hit the ground running to help organize our first live grazing field day in 2016.

Minutes of 80th annual meeting of Fulton County SWCD The 80th annual meeting of the Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District was held at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, at the Geneva Center, north of Rochester.

The meeting opened with a welcome and recognition of county commissioners, county council, sponsors and supervisors. Sponsor advertisers for the resource report for 2019 were: Craig Welding, Culligan Water, Farm Bureau, Hickory Creek, Kate’s Tax, Kite & Ulerick’s Heating & Cooling, L&B Oasis, Mary’s Stich & Knit, Mike’s Trash, Odell Lumber, Petunia’s Antiques, REMC, Rochester Homes, RTC, Smith Farm, Tom Bauters Tax, Valley Sanitation, Winamac Coil Spring.

Supervisor Mike Norman gave the invocation and a buffet meal was served to 107 members and guests. After the meal, guest speaker Dr. Jeff Dukes presented information about the Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment.

Dr. Dukes directs the Purdue Climate Change Research Center and is a professor in Purdue’s Departments of Forestry and Natural Resources and Biological Sciences.

The business meeting began with approval of the minutes of the 2019 annual meeting and the financial report. Austin White introduced Vice-Chairman Dustin Zellers as the sole candidate for re-election. With no nominations from the floor, the election was conducted by a show of hands. The majority was in favor and Zellers was elected supervisor for another three-year term. The oath of office was administered to Zellers by Fulton County Commissioner Steve Metzger.

Associate Supervisor Glen Jones presented awards to the top four participants in the soils judging. First place was Dryden Vance, second place was Jesse Shriver, third place was Trent Reinholt and fourth place was Jakeb Hammel. Allen Chesser presented the cash awards which were sponsored by First National Bank of Monterey.

Mike Norman gave some history about Joe Kroft, then presented the Joseph A. Kroft award to Riffle Farms. Kyle Riffle accepted the award.

Brief agency reports were given by Jeff Smith, CED of the Farm Service Agency, Mark Kepler of Purdue Extension, Dan Rosswurm of the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Stan Moore, region director of the Indiana

Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Zellers gave a rundown of some of the 2019 programs and accomplishments for the SWCD, including: a CWI grant to fund another year of Cover Crop Cost Share; a collaboration with the Lake Manitou Association resulting in a $32,000 LARE grant for a diagnostic study of the watershed; a Clean Water Indiana grant to fund the SWCD staff promotion from part-time secretary to fulltime executive director; the ongoing manure testing program; an information booth at the 4-H fair; landfill inspections; and a farmer breakfast.

The SWCD assisted in organizing a local Hoosier Riverwatch group and participated in the annual Arrow Head Country RC&D River Rafting and Academic Competition.

They gave six fourth grade watershed presentations at Riddle Elementary. Zellers and White attended the IASWCD annual conference in Indianapolis. They designed seven different sets of cover crop signs and placed them throughout the county to promote cover crops and soil health. They designed and ordered the new 2020 Fulton County Plat Book.

Door prize tickets were drawn throughout the evening. The drawings were finished with nearly everyone receiving a prize. Closing remarks were given, encouraging everyone to become, or continue to be, good stewards of the land.

The annual meeting ended at approximately 9 p.m.

Water quality testing to begin in 2021 The SWCD partnered with the Lake Manitou Association to secure a Lake and River Enhancement grant to conduct a watershed diagnostic study (2018-2020).

Results of the study are available on the DNR website.

Primary recommendations at the end of the study indicated four of the Lake Manitou Watershed sites, the unnamed tributary north (site one), Rain Creek (site four), the unnamed tributary south (site five) and J.M. Robbins Ditch (site seven) generally possessed poorer water quality conditions than the other stream reaches and these watersheds should be the first targeted for projects aimed at reducing instream nutrient, sediment and pathogen concentrations and loading to the Lake Manitou Watershed.

Beginning in 2021, the SWCD will partner with the Lake Manitou Association’s newly formed Hoosier River Watch group to gather water samples at specified locations and send the samples to a lab for DNA testing. Funding for this testing has been made available in part by a 2020-22 LARE grant for water quality monitoring.

Multiple methods of microbial/bacterial source tracking are available to identify if fecal contamination found in the streams originates from human or animal sources.

If found to be from animal sources, the tests can further identify if it is from livestock or wildlife.

If the source is determined to be livestock, further determination of bovine swine or avian (poultry) in origin will be reported.

Lake Manitou Watershed diagnostic study executive summary The Lake Manitou Watershed Diagnostic Study is a comprehensive examination of the Lake Manitou tributary streams and its surrounding watershed.

In 2019, with funding from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake and River Enhancement Program, the Fulton County SWCD hired Arion Consultants to conduct the study.

The scope of the study included the following: • Data review and mapping current conditions: Collection and review of historic studies, water quality and fisheries reports and base mapping of watershed

conditions.

• Public engagement and outreach: Completion of watershed walking and driving tours and landowner and public meetings.

• Watershed assessment: Complete stream water quality sampling, macroinvertebrate and fish community assessments and habitat scoring.

• Analysis and data interpretation: Review of historic and current conditions, assessment of collected water quality data and compilation of results and recommendations.

Lake Manitou Watershed Continued from page 6 The Lake Manitou Watershed encompasses 28,267 acres (11,439 ha) in Fulton and Miami Counties and includes all of the Robbins Taylor Ditch (HUC 051201060502) and much of the Lake Manitou-Mill Creek (HUC 051201060509) watersheds. The watershed is 75% row crop agriculture or pasture. Forested lands and wetlands account for 15% of the watershed land use, open water cover 3% of the watershed, while urban land uses, including urban open space and low, medium and high intensity developed areas, account for 6% of the watershed.

Four of the Lake Manitou Watershed sites: unnamed tributary north (site one), Rain Creek (site four), the unnamed tributary south (site five), J.M. Robbins Ditch (site seven) generally possessed poorer water quality conditions than the other stream reaches.

• The unnamed tributary north (site one) possessed elevated nitrate-nitrogen, ammonia-nitrogen, total Kjeldahl nitrogen and ortho and total phosphorus concentrations.

• Rain Creek (site four) possessed the highest loading rates for all parameters except total suspended solids during base flow conditions and highest loading rates for all parameters except nitratenitrogen during storm flow conditions.

• The unnamed tributary south (site

five) possessed elevated ortho and total phosphorus concentrations during all condition and elevated total suspended solids concentrations during storm flow conditions. Additionally, this site possessed the second highest loading rates for all sites under base flow conditions and the highest loading rates per unit drainage during storm flow conditions.

• J.M. Robbins Ditch (site seven) possessed elevated nitrate-nitrogen and ammonia-nitrogen concentrations and rated the highest areal loading rates for nitrogen under base flow conditions.

High orthophosphorus and total phosphorus concentrations during base and storm flow conditions, elevated total suspended solids concentrations during storm flow conditions and E. coli concentrations that exceeded the state standard during storm conditions were the water chemistry issues of most concern in Lake Manitou Watershed streams.
