For the first time ever, a Caston High School FFA parliamentary procedure team has won state.

Team members placed first in the contest in Lebanon Feb. 10 by topping the other seven best teams statewide.

Team coach, Tiffany Douglass, who works with Caston FFA Advisor Nick Korniak to lead the team, noted the 11 students on it “were really excited” to win.

“It’s an extremely difficult contest to win,” she said. “There are a few of them that were on our novice team that went to state two years ago, and they just fell short of winning it.”

“They knew they did well, but they were very surprised they were (the winning team) because when you get to state all the teams are really good,” added Douglass.

To make it to state, the team placed in the top two at a district contest, followed by winning a section contest.

Parliamentary procedure teaches students how to conduct meetings following Robert’s Rules of Order.

“When they make it to state, they have to actually do a demonstration, so they’ll get cards that have different motions on them and then it will be highlighted or underlined if they have to do that motion and then they have to do debate,” explained Douglass.

“They work together as a team to perform all those motions.”

She said team members “also take individual tests.”

“They have to answer individual questions and team ques

tions over the motions they had,” said Douglass.

She said she believed the experience contributed by the team’s three seniors and the team’s numerous practices helped it win state.

Douglass also added many of the students on the parliamentary procedure team are involved in other FFA leadership activities.

“Most of the kids participate in other leadership contests, like public speaking and demonstrations, which helps them with their (parliamentary procedure) contests,” she said.

They next will go on to nationals in October, held at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

“They’ll have the top teams

for first time

from all 50 states. When they compete there, they’ll compete as Team Indiana,” said Douglass.

She said the national contest “has more parts to it than our state contest.”

The team will start preparing for it later in the spring.

Regardless of whether the team wins the national contest, its members will “take the skills (from parliamentary procedure) into (the) future,” said Douglass.

“They learn how to think fast on their feet, how to properly defend their thoughts through debate,” she said, adding team members will probably continue into some sort of leadership roles after they graduate.

“I’m just really proud of the team,” said Douglass. “They’ve put a lot of time in ... It’s nice to see their hard work pay off.”

By RUSSELL DAVIDSON SR. Guest Writer We probably all had a special teacher in school. Harry Ray was that person for me. He taught government and was also my freshman basketball coach.

In government class, he said, “If you learn anything in this class, learn to vote.” If you were fortunate enough to have him for a coach he taught you everything you needed to know as a freshman.

He had two rules you should follow. Your grades come first, and number two was a tough one:

Indiana’s K-12 schools are spending more than state leaders expected on student textbooks — and some are still sending bills to students’ families — prompting lawmakers to request additional information about what’s being expensed.

The questioning comes a year after the General Assembly dedicated $160 million in the current state budget to eliminate textbook and curriculum fees for Hoosier families, starting with the 2023-24 academic year.

Based on the funds available in May 2023, the Indiana Department of Education estimated the per student reimbursement amount to schools would be approximately $151.88. Based on spending in the current academic year, however, the

actual per student reimbursement amount came out to $158.21.

Still, IDOE data obtained by the Indiana Capital Chronicle shows the state reimbursed 395 traditional K-12 districts and charter schools a total of about $159 million for the current academic year — about a million dollars below what was appropriated.

What’s not clear, though, is the amount each school actually spent on textbooks and other materials overall, or how much individual districts requested in reimbursements from the state.

Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner said IDOE “gave some schools more than they asked for,” while other schools “significantly increased their asks.”

After seeing those reimbursement numbers, Jenner emphasized that state officials want to “better understand what we are spending

on,” and whether schools should make more efficient decisions” on curricular materials moving forward.

She said, too, there needs to be more investigation around other fees schools are still charging parents — like for certain college-level course materials and school management software like Skyward.

As such, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb included in his 2024 agenda a statewide review of curricular materials expenses, following the state’s 2023 commitment to cover textbook fees in K-12 schools.

Language in House Bill 1243 so far requires all public schools to participate in an annual statewide survey concerning school fees charged to students or parents. Local officials would have to complete the survey to be eligible to receive a distribution from the statewide curricular materials fund.

Indiana officials say they want more information about school fees

In Matthew 4:8-10, Satan had taken Christ to a mountain and offered him all the kingdoms of the world. Here on this Galilee mount, Christ proclaimed that he now had all authority and that Satan had been defeated!

“All nations” (Matthew 28:19).

“Teach” is actually “make disciples.” This is a commission to take the Gospel to all nations, and is a definite change from Matthew 10:5-6, where the commission was limited to the Jews only. Evangelism alone is not the commission; after people are won, they should be baptized, which suggests a local church fellowship. They should also be taught, which suggests the teaching and preaching of the word of God. Please keep in mind that our commission is not simply “to win souls.” It is to “make disciples” — which includes winning them, bringing them into a Christian fellowship, and building them up in the faith. While we thank God for every Christian ministry that is true to the Lord and his word, whatever is done should be tied to the local church.

“All things” (Matthew 28:20). A disciple is a learner, and he or she

is to be taught “all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” This includes the whole word of God. People are to live by every word of God (Matthew 4:4). All scripture is profitable (2 Timothy 3:16). The church that fails to teach people the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27) is not obeying the Great Commission.

“Always” (Matthew 28:20). What a tremendous assurance. “I am with you always!” In Matthew 1:23, Jesus was called “Immanuel” — God with us, and here he reaffirms that name. He is with us through his Holy Spirit, in his word, by his providential care, and with his divine presence. This is the promise that carried Livingstone into the heart of darkest Africa and that encouraged and enabled messengers of Christ down through the years.

Matthew ends his Gospel with a responsibility on the part of the Christian: to take the Gospel to all people. Not all will be saved, but all deserve a chance to hear the Gospel.

Obituaries Barbara Ann Hurlburt

Barbara Ann Hurlburt, 68, Winamac, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, in Pulaski Health Care Center, Winamac.

She was born on Nov. 21, 1955. Barbara married Lester Alvin Hurlburt BARBARA ANN HURLBURT Sr. on June 23, 1984; he preceded her in death on May 14, 2012.

She is survived by her daughters: Betty (Jon) Crissinger, Winamac, and Jennifer (Mitchell) DeFord, Logansport; son Rex Hurlburt, Winamac; stepdaughter, Caroline Calvert, Kentland; stepson Benjamin Hurlburt, Winamac; daughter-in-law Melissa Hurlburt, Winamac; six grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; brother, Kenny (Sherry) Greenhill, Fort Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William F. and Virginia P. (Nolan) Mills; husband, Lester Hurlburt Sr.; stepson Lester Alvin Hurlburt Jr.; five siblings: Debbie, Robin, Linda, Raymond, and Roy. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in the Akron Church of God, 301 S. West St., Akron, with Pastor Mandy Nellans officiating.

A committal service and burial will be held in the Athens Mount Hope (Hoover) Cemetery, Athens.

Rosie was born on March 30, 1926. She married BerROSIE LEE rell C. MarPRATER shall, who passed on May 23, 1942. She later married Burl Prater, he preceded her in April 24, 1985.

She is survived by her nieces Connie Fairchild of North Judson and Stella Day of Fort Wayne; and nephews Gene “Jerry” Manns of Silver Lake, Danny Slone of Wabash, and Wiley Bailey; great nieces and nephews.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Berrell and Burl, son Laymon Marshall, grandson Marvin Marshall and Jimmy Marshall, sister Josephine Slone, half sister Bertha Bolen, and half brothers Dorton Manns, Mitchel Manns, and James Arnold Slone.

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 19, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron.

The interment was in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery alongside her son and grandson.

Kroms, Kern Woodlands LLC honored during Fulton County SWCD Meeting Text and Photos

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer George and Nancy Krom and Kern Woodlands LLC received awards at the 84th annual Fulton County Soil and Water Conservation District Meeting.

The event was on Monday, Feb. 12, at the Geneva Center outside Rochester.

The Kroms, who farm east of Rochester, got the Joseph A. Kroft Conservation Award. The late Kroft helped start the Fulton County SWCD Board, explained presenter Mike Norman.

Norman explained the award is given out based on the recipients’

“conservation practices in Fulton County.”

After introducing the Kroms, Norman said they had farmed in Fulton County “for their entire adult life.”

“They have cooperated with the soil and water conservation district on many practices to protect our soil and water resources,” said Norman. “Their efforts have included such things as participation in our cover crop program as well as being one of the county’s early adopters of no-till crop production.”

“The first no-till seminar I ever went to was at (the Krom) farm. It was in 1989,” said Norman.

resentatives were searching in the last year for an E.coli cause, they sampled from the Krom farm and theirs was the “cleanest sample … attested to in the entire project.”

“Most of the acreage farmed by the Kroms is in the Tippecanoe River watershed. Their efforts in soil and water conservation have had measurable positive results and improvement of water quality both in Lake Manitou and the Tippecanoe River watersheds,” said Norman.

George said thank you and noted he and Nancy’s kids were present for the award.

Norman next gave the River Friendly Farmer of Indiana Award to Kern Woodlands LLC, run by siblings Dr. Patricia Holmgren, Bill Kern and Shirley Needham.

Norman said the award “recognizes farmers for their implementation of conservation practices like no-till and cover crops, which ultimately protect waterways and improve water quality in Indiana.”

He said land belonging to Kern Woodlands LLC once was part of the siblings’ father Bob Kern’s Christmas tree farm. Some of the land is now rented out to a farmer for corn and soybeans with other parts being a nature reserve.

Norman said the Kern siblings “stay current on mowing fire lanes” on their land.

“Between the dripline of the woods and the crops, we require the tenant farmer to leave approximately 40-60 yards of grasses and small shrubs for turkey and quail nesting habitat,” read Norman from a statement from the siblings. “The ponds provide nesting spots for geese, ducks and herons and a safe resting place for migratory species. They maintain bluebird boxes, which provide homes for other small songbirds, such as tree swallows.”

“The whitetail deer are prolific, so they allow contracted hunting in defined areas,” said Norman of the siblings. “The use of cover crops and no-till practices is helping to amend and to counteract the high-acid content from the pine tree growing. It’s improving and will continue to improve over time. Due to the conservation easements, there are large strips of trees, native shrubs and grasses. This helps prevent erosion and improve water filtration. They are hopeful all the riverbanks and frontage wetlands will continue to be protected long after they are gone.”

Needham accepted the award on behalf of her siblings.

She said thank you, adding she hoped more women would get involved in land conservation.

Regarding SWCD supervisors, Matt Harsh, who opted to step down as one, was honored. Needham is to replace him.

Times Theater of Rochester marks 100th birthday with Heartbreaker Ball Text and Photos

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The Times Theater of Rochester had plenty of guests for its 100th birthday party on Wednesday, Feb. 14.

The Heartbreaker Ball was held then at the theater at 618 Main St. Guests could enjoy a cash bar and snacks, including bags of popcorn. Entertainment included a magician and live music by several groups, with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ tribute band Southern Accents as

he headliner.

Attendees were encouraged to don 1920s, steampunk and Alice in Wonderland attire.

Theater Executive Director Julie Shambarger said she was pleased with the way the event turned out.

“We’re a near sellout crowd. I mean, look around, everyone’s in costumes,” she said. “It’s just a big representation of how excited everyone is and enthusiastic for the (theater).”

The theater first opened to the public on Valentine’s Day 1924.

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Tippecanoe Valley High School students have started using the high school’s new weight room.

At its monthly work session Thursday, Feb. 15, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board heard this information from The Skillman Corp. Project Manager Scott Rogers. The Skillman Corp. is the company managing the high school’s ongoing construction project, of which the weight room is a part.

Rogers also noted the wall be-

In the new auditorium, workers “finished the last of the (seating) risers,” he said.

Rogers said the new general locker rooms are mostly done.

They will be used for the boys’ basketball sectional set to occur at TVHS at the end of the month.

He added work’s been started on the agriculture section, with walls being taken down for that.

Regarding the timeline for parts of the project, Rogers said the pool area should be done in July and auditorium around August.

His Kids Preschool to close after 25 years

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer After 25 years, Rochester church of Christ’s His Kids Preschool is closing.

And leaders are welcoming former students and parents of students to share thoughts and memories regarding the school.

People are welcome to send notes to the preschool at 120 E. Fifth St., Rochester, IN 46975, or email them to hiskids@rochestercoc.net.

The church will have its annual Meet His Kids Program on Sunday, April 7, for one last time.

Former students are welcome to come then, with the church service first at 10:30 a.m. and the special event following.

“We do this every year ... It’s a chance for the church to meet the

kids that are in our care that year and for the kids to meet the people that have supported them,” said His Kids Head Teacher Lisa Hooley. “We have a big dinner.”

Hooley and fellow Teacher Melva Stamberger’s retirements are the reason for the school’s closing, said Hooley.

“We were hoping that somebody from the church would want to take over, but that hasn’t materialized. It’s a big commitment,” said Hooley.

“I hate to see it end,” said Stamberger.

Knowing that this year would be His Kids’ last, leaders opted to not have a 3-year-old class as those kids would have to go elsewhere for their second year of preschool. That left just the 4-year-old and 5-year-old class, with 12 students in it.

Kids go three days a week, with the preschool previously operating five days when the 3-year-old class was held.

Hooley said she’s happy with the way the last year of the school has gone so far.

“We wanted our last year to be a really good one, so I think we’ve done that. We’ve got a great group of kids, and we’ve got great parents. It’s been a good year,” she said.

Hooley helped start the preschool in August 1999 with the church’s Pastor Jim Dillinger’s wife, Helene Dillinger.

“We approached our elders about starting a preschool, and they were very supportive, and the church has been very supportive,” said Hooley. “I mean we’ve taken up a lot of space that they haven’t minded us using

and wear and tear on the building that they’ve been wonderful about.”

Hooley has taught at the school for all 25 years. Along with Stamberger and Helene Dillinger, other teachers have included Leslie Walker, Mandie McCarter, Johnie Krom, Randee Taylor, Delores Hamilton and Amy Widman.

More than 500 kids have attended His Kids over the years, with Jim Dillinger, Hooley and Stamberger noting some of those students have later been Lilly Endowment Community Scholars, doctors and lawyers.

“We got to be the very beginning of their education essentially,” said Jim Dillinger.

He added having the preschool has been “a wonderful way for us

to connect to the community.”

Hooley said she’d really experience emotions regarding the school’s closing at graduation on May 16.

“Graduation is always kind of hard to say goodbye to the kids anyway, but this year it’s going to be saying goodbye to a lot more than just the kids,” she said.

“I think the church is sad to see us go,” added Hooley. “They’ve asked if there’s any way that we could stay open, but then there’s also our church is growing and we really need to use this space for other things.”

“I’m comfortable with the fact that our area is going to be used for other things,” she said. “I’m excited to see what God uses it for.”

Miller, of Mentone, and Stump, of Silver Lake, are the 2024 vale-

dictorian and salutatorian. They were honored at a small reception on Friday, Feb. 16, at TVHS, at which their family, friends and Valley staff were present.

“It’s really, really exciting,” said Miller of being named valedictorian. “It’s something I’ve been working towards for a really long time obviously, and so it was just good to know that all the hard work wasn’t for nothing. I’m just really grateful to all the people

Miller, the daughter of Steve and Jill Miller, plans to go to Indiana Wesleyan University and study political science and prelaw, with hopes to eventually attend law school.

While at Valley, she’s been in cheerleading, student council, National Honor Society, Sunshine Society, the mock trial team, the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy, theater and church youth group.

Steve said he and Jill “were extremely proud of the work ethic that (Kaylynn) demonstrates.”

“When she sets a goal, she doesn’t stop until she achieves that goal,” said Steve of Kaylynn.

“I’m super proud of her too just because she’s worked so hard, but also she’s a great person and she cares about others,” added Jill. “I love her heart as well.”

Stump said being salutatorian felt “really nice, especially to accomplish it alongside my two best friends.”

She referred to her twin Katelyn Stump, who is finishing just behind her in third for the 2024 graduating class, and Kaylynn.

“I’m grateful to my parents and all my friends,” said Caroline.

She and Katelyn are the daughters of Herb and Donna Stump.

Caroline is planning to attend Indiana University in Bloomington, with her studies to be in international law and institutions.

She one day wants to go to law school.

Herb added his daughters have “exceeded (his) expectations.”

“They studied hard,” he said.

TVHS Principal Brandon Kresca said he and other Valley staff were “very proud of Kaylynn and Caroline.”

“They are excellent representatives of Tippecanoe Valley High School and just the amount of work that it takes to be successful and to dedicate to your academics, and they have just no doubt demonstrated that over their four years of school,” he said.

How can I protect myself?

I am willing to bet KYLE L. each of you SOMMERS has a long list MSN, FNP-BC of tasks you’re rushing to complete daily! We all know the work never ends, yet we rush through the day anyway. We are unaware of the toll it takes on our bodies. Until we reach too far or try to carry too much in one trip — then we feel that strained muscle! Once injured, we are quickly aware of the small movements we take for granted. Suddenly, small daily tasks take twice as long.

So how can we accomplish everything on our list and prevent those minor injuries that can be annoying?

I say the answer to that question is Proper Body Mechanics!

Proper Body Mechanics refers to how we hold and use our body as we move. Each movement results from a complex coordinated effort of muscles, ligaments, bones, and our nervous system. This happens without us being aware of it. Being mindful of how we move maximizes our ability to prevent injury. As we move about our day, it is very easy to lose sight of everything happening within our body to help us accomplish the simplest of tasks.

By focusing on the following principles, we can regain control of our movements and prevent injury: • Be efficient in planning, orga-

nizing, and resting: Plan to ensure enough time to complete the task.

Organize by placing items in easyto-reach places or having all equipment readily available before starting a task. Allow muscles to recover by resting.

Rest can be accomplished by alternating between heavy and light tasks, scheduling work in intervals, or alternating between sitting and standing.

• Utilize proper body alignment and good posture: Proper alignment reduces strain. Keep feet shoulder-width apart, and bend at the knees instead of the waist.

• Avoid slouching. Use abdominal muscles and hold objects close to the body when lifting, pivot your feet instead of twisting, and lift with legs instead of your back.

• Remember to distribute the load: Reduce strain by spreading the load over multiple joints, focusing on letting larger joints and surface areas do the work.

Always use the minimum necessary force: • Decrease strain on joints by using a wide stance, lifting with legs, and holding with constant pressure vs. shoving or squeezing.

• Respect pain: Be aware of what hurts. Modify the activity, adjust your alignment, and wear supportive devices as needed. Utilize ice, elevation, and ibuprofen to reduce inflammation. The goal is to reduce pain while still being able to complete the activity.

• Reduce excess body weight: The thing to remember is one to three. Your joints feel approximately three pounds of force for every pound of body weight. Therefore, 10 pounds equals 30 pounds of force on your knees or ankles. Losing just a few pounds can relieve stress on your joints.

• Stretch: Daily stretching increases blood flow, promotes heal-

ing, maximizes range of motion, increases flexibility, decreases risk of injury, and improves your ability to complete physical activities.

Daily effort and small steps yield great rewards. Healthy habits are created when these principles become part of your routine. Each of these principles protects your muscles and joints, ultimately reducing your risk of injury and benefiting your overall health.

Rochester scored 23 points and finished in 21st place.

Brant Beck began his tournament with a 5-1 win over Cowan’s Levi Abbott in the first round.

Brant Beck then defeated Crown Point’s Anthony Rinehart on an injury default in the third-place match. Beck began his tournament with a 7-3 win over Leo’s Isaiah Coolman in the first round Friday.

In his first match, Beck lost to fourth-ranked Nate Johnson of Center Grove 2-1 in an ultimate tiebreaker overtime period.

The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and remained tied after two overtime periods before Johnson got an escape and was able to avoid Beck’s shot attempts.

Johnson went on to win the state title later Saturday.

Beck also finished sixth at state at 220 pounds in 2022 and seventh at 220 in 2023. He and 1994 grad Damon Hummel are the only Rochester wrestlers to place three times at state.

Beck also finished his career with a school-record 162 wins, four Three Rivers Conference titles, three sectional titles, and four regional titles.

As a team, Rochester scored 83.5 points and finished in third place at semi-state Feb. 10 in East Chicago.

Boys Swimming Rochester senior Jake Seuferer earned a berth in the IHSAA state finals by winning the Warsaw sectional title in the 500

freestyle last Saturday.

Seuferer’s winning time of 4:59.49 was a personal best, and he cruised past the field, swimming over 10 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the 20-lap race. Seuferer is going to state for the first time.

Seuferer also swam a personal-best 1:50.09 in the 200 freestyle and finished fourth.

The other Rochester swimmer to participate in an individual final was senior Wes Steininger, who was eighth in 23.70 seconds in the 50 freestyle and seventh in 58.19 seconds in the 100 butterfly.

Seuferer will swim in the state preliminaries this Friday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.

Boys Basketball Rochester will play Wabash in a Class 2A, Sectional 36 quarterfinal at Lewis Cass Feb. 27, per the IHSAA boys basketball draw that was released Sunday.

Rochester lost to Wabash 7267 in its regular season meeting

Feb. 9 at home.

This is the first postseason meeting between the Zebras and the Apaches since the inception of class basketball in 1998.

In the other half of the draw, North Miami will play Winamac with the winner to take on Lewis Cass.

On Friday, Tanner Reinartz scored 19 points, but Rochester lost to host Peru 72-64. Rochester fell to 8-11 overall and 4-4 in the Three Rivers Conference with the loss.

On Feb. 13, Tanner Witt-Hoyo scored 15 points, and Gage Riffle and Julian Swanson added 12 each to lead the Class 1A, No. 8 Triton boys basketball team to a 66-56 win over visiting Rochester at the Trojan Trench Tuesday.

Owen Prater and Drew Bowers scored 15 points each. Tanner Reinartz added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Zebras, who lost their fourth straight game and fell to 8-10.

ton since Nick Allen’s 3-point buzzer beater in 2020.

Rochester cut what had been an 11-point halftime deficit down to two in the third quarter, getting within 47-45 on a Bowers 3-pointer, but WittHoyo got consecutive buckets against Rochester’s 2-3 zone on passes from Dante’ Workman from the high post. Rochester

led 16-11 after one quarter and led by as many as six in the second quarter.

On Feb. 6, Preston Wolfe scored a game-high 19 points, including the game-tying layup after a steal in the fourth quarter as part of a 7-0 game-ending run, to lead the Plymouth boys basketball team to a 67-63 win over Rochester at The Rock.
