Restored sleigh has roots and a future in Fulton County 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU If inanimate objects could speak, a recently restored sleigh would undoubtedly have volumes to record. Sometime around 125 years ago, this particular sleigh was hand crafted in Fulton County inside the shop of J.G. Hill & Son, which profitably operated in Rochester in the late 1800s. The business was owned and operated by John G. Hill, “one of the most progressive citizens of the county,” according to Elia Peattie in her book “Pictorial History of America, The Fulton County Edition,” which was published in 1896. Peattie noted of Hill: “At Port Anderson, Paducah, Ky., on March 25, 1864, he received a severe gunshot wound in his left thigh, which disabled him for six months. … Returning home at the close of the war, Mr. Hill established a small carriage shop at Fulton,

whence in 1871 he removed to Rochester. After working for a time by the day for others, he entered into partnership with J. B. Feiser, building buggies, and then for two years was in the grocery business with Louis Felder, and then sold out and became a partner of Noah Craven in the carriage and wagon business. The new firm did a successful business until 1883, when our subject sold out and established the firm of J. G. Hill & Son, which profitably operated a shop until 1895, when John G. Hill became the sole proprietor. The firm sold buggies, carriages and wagons all over the west as far as Kansas, and success attended their well directed efforts.” Fast forward now to present day. Richard Piper was well aware of the sleigh. He said it had been in his possession for many years, stored up in the rafters of his barn. Piper said they got it down around 10 years ago and had leaned it up against a corn crib, seemingly to be forgotten from history. His son, Eric Piper, recalled taking rides down

Main Street in the sleigh, pulled by a small horse owned by Punk Davis. In May 2020, Piper sold the antique to his friend, Maurice Horn, who knew of the sleigh’s provenance and was committed to restoring it and ensuring it would forever remain in Fulton County. Shortly after the transfer, Horn sent the sleigh to Martin’s Buggy Shop in Nappanee to receive its ultimate makeover. Seven months later, the sleigh returned to Rochester, much to the delight and amazement of Horn and the Pipers. The sleigh had been restored to its original grandeur, complete with a new lacquered black finish, fresh red upholstery and fine paint accent lines in gold and red. No detail was missed, including the detailing of the shoe scrapers on the runners to the whip holder on the stanchion. Even the harness attachment that allows the sleigh to be pulled by a horse was immaculately reContinued on page 3
