LOOKING FORWARD TO O
people get back in the habit of coming in.”
In the first week of 2023, Shopping Guide News of Fulton County asked several residents what they were looking forward to in the coming year. Many are business owners, and in spite of some of the dire economic predictions heard in the national media, we found them to be genuinely enthusiastic, with some even looking to expand in 2023.
Mike Richie, owner of Richie’s Men’s Wear, said “I’m looking forward to focusing on e-commerce to better serve customers outside the county.” Richie added he is also hoping to expand into more formal wear, including slacks and dress shirts, and also provide tuxedo rentals.
Jared Howard, owner of CommUnity Project Discount Store, stated, “This is a year of expansion … We’re pricing more merchandise, and we’re trying to get a bigger building. … We’ve outgrown this space.” In the spring, Howard also expects to hire more employees.
Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing in Rochester, echoed Howard’s sentiments. “I’m looking forward to helping people save more money and hear better as we expand to our new location in Logansport.”
Erica Coffing, the new digital marketing director at Fulton County Public Library, said, “I’m looking forward to getting the library’s makers’ space up and running in an exciting new way, and offering workshops to the public.”
Lisa Byers, Fulton County Senior Center Activities Director, said she looks forward to “more activities for seniors and more outings. … I’d also like to see more people in here,” she added, explaining attendance has dropped since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’d like to see
Harry Webb, owner of Webb’s Family Pharmacy, discussed how COVID-19 has affected his business as well. “The unprecedented demand for COVID-19 vaccine to protect our population was primarily delivered by retail pharmacy. The traditional walk-in method for vaccines was not safe or feasible during the pandemic. And most pharmacy’s adapted and now perform ‘appointment based’ immunizations. We will be expanding our appointment based services in 2023 to offer patients many additional services such as testing, health screenings and detailed disease management consultations and more.”
Pam Romine became the new owner of Flirt Boutique in downtown Rochester last September. “I’m looking forward to a whole year of owning the store,” she said. “I’m looking forward to good health, happiness and prosperity in the new year — not only for the boutique but for all the people who stop in here as well.”
Phil Nicklaus is a longtime member of Fulton County Coon Hunters Club. “My hope is for the Coon Hunters Club to grow.” Nicklaus oversees the club’s turkey shoots. “I love it. It’s the best group of people you’ll meet.”
Recently elected Fulton County Sheriff Travis Heishman began his new responsibilities on Jan. 1. “I’m looking forward to the new position, and a safe and healthy 2023.”
Rochester Community High School Senior Nikolas Prathaftakis said, “I’m planning on going to college at Purdue University in Fort Wayne.” A musical theater major, he is also looking forward to “whatever opportunity within the arts or other job opportunity comes my way.”

Heishman assumes new role as Fulton County Sheriff
On Jan. 1, Travis Heishman assumed his responsibilities as the newly-elected sheriff of Fulton County. The position reflects a lifelong dedication to law enforcement stretching back to his childhood.
Heishman was born and raised in Rochester and graduated from Rochester Community High School in 1998. His grandmother owned the Fish and Fun Campground on the Tippecanoe River, and growing up his free time was spent doing “anything that had to do with the outdoors.” As a young teenager, he could also be found working at Heishman Bakery with his grandfather.
Throughout his formative years, Heishman was also inspired by family members and mentors involved in law enforcement. His mother was a dispatcher in the 1980s, while his uncle, Rob Bryant, was a jail commander. Another early influence was Sergeant Ed Beaird, who he credits with “keeping things on track for me as a teenager.”
Following graduation, Heishman attended Vincennes University, where he earned an associate degree in law enforcement.
From there, he entered employment with the Indiana Department of Corrections, first in Wabash Valley and then at the Miami County Correctional Facility, where he served as an officer, sergeant and correctional counselor before being hired by Fulton County Sheriff Walker Conley as a deputy in 2007.
“It was exciting,” he recalled. “It was what I always wanted to do.”
Heishman feels he benefited greatly from his time in corrections. “It was an eye-opener,” he recalled, and it gave him an opportunity to interact with and gain insight into the lives of convicted criminals. “It gave me the ability to communicate with inmates.” This skill would continue to serve him in later years.
Among his duties as a deputy, Heishman served on a K9 unit in narcotics investigations. In 2015, he was promoted to detective, where he put the previous years of experience to work, particularly the “ability to communicate. … You have to sniff out the truth, weed through the evidence.”
A detective also needs patience. “You can’t hurry a case, even though it can be frustrating for families and victims.”
As a police officer, Heishman
has experienced the darker side of humanity. However, he cited the 2018 school bus crash resulting in the death of three children as a crucial moment in his career and life. He was a first responder at the scene.
“It totally humbles you as a person and a first responder. … Life is entirely too short to take anything for granted.”
Heishman has been married to his wife, Angie, since 2007, and they have three children: Dalton, Rilya and Isaac. He is also a Moose Club member and has served on the boards of Habitat for Humanity, Fulton County Soccer Association and Drug Free Fulton County, where he also served as chairman for several years.
The demands of his new role will likely require him to withdraw from some of these activities, he said. But in his free time, Heishman hopes to continue enjoying the great outdoors with his family, often on Lake Manitou.
Running for sheriff in 2022 was a logical next step for Heishman. “I felt like I still had leadership to offer the community.”
Among his immediate priorities as sheriff is the creation of a chemical addiction program to address substance issues in the county. The program, he said,
should offer life skills training such as anger management and personal finance, which those enrolled can “take with them beyond the substance abuse disorder.”
Last fall, following the election, Heishman received the green light to update officers’
body cameras, which were rolled out on Jan. 3. He sees “keeping up with technical advancements” as critical and also emphasized the importance of networking with other law enforcement agencies. “They know they can count on me and vice-versa.”

Woodlawn welcomes new general surgeon
Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, recently welcomed Monzur Haque, M.D., as a new general surgeon.
Haque comes to Woodlawn from Archbold, Ohio, and previously worked in other rural hospitals. He currently serves as a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
“If you knew me for two weeks in medical school, you knew I was going to be a rural surgeon,” Haque said in a news release. “I get to address a variety of surgical needs instead of performing the same few procedures repeatedly.”
About joining Woodlawn,
Haque added, “My favorite thing about working for Woodlawn is the personal relationships with patients only afforded by a small hospital — one-to-one interactions with patients seen only in rural practice.”
Haque started his education
at State University of New Jersey and went to medical school at New York Medical College. He finished his residency at Easton Hospital in Easton, Pa.
“We at Woodlawn are excited to be able to add Dr. Haque to our medical community,” said Brad Rogers, Woodlawn’s chief operating officer. “Dr. Haque is increasing our surgical team’s ability to expand our capacity to help the residents of Rochester and the surrounding area. We couldn’t be more pleased to have him working here at Woodlawn Hospital.”

Ruth Kay Harvey Horn
Iconic Revered Teacher 40 Plus Years
Ruth Kay Harvey Horn passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 2, 2023, at Woodlawn Hospital, two weeks shy of her 86th birthday and four months after her beloved husband Arnold.
She was born Jan. 16, 1937, to Clyde and Mary Adeline (Eisert) Harvey near Buffalo in White County. Kay always lived on a farm; her parents moved from Royal Center to rural Fulton County when she was a girl. The farm still resides in the family.
Kay graduated from Talma High School in 1955 and went to Ball State Teachers College, where she earned degrees in physical education and English. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and graduated from Ball State in 1959. She went on to earn her master’s in education from Ball State in the early 1960s.
When she wasn’t studying in Muncie, Kay worked as a carhop at the Dog ‘n Suds root beer stand in Rochester during the summers and breaks to help pay for college. There Kay met her husband Arnold, who could be found cruising the root beer stand in his pink convertible, sipping a 25-cent root beer and generally causing mischief.
After graduating from Ball State, Kay moved back to Rochester for her first teaching position with Rochester Community Schools. That winter, she and Arnold married on Dec. 27, 1959, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. They eventually had two daughters, Kristy and Beth, and lived most of their lives together on their family farm in Fulton County, north of Rochester. This farm is also still in the family. Arnold and Kay were married nearly 63 years.
Kay was the girls’ physical education teacher and volleyball, basketball and track coach at Rochester Middle School for many years. Known as “Mama Kay,” “Mama Toad” or just mom, she had the privilege of working with many outstanding student-athletes who went on to impressive high school, college and career success. She eventually added reading teacher to her many titles and retired after 41 years in education in 2001.
Kay was an avid quilter and women’s league bowler, active in the Fulton County Retired Teachers Association and in Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional women educator’s society, and a member of Riverview Community Church. When not coaching, refereeing, quilting or teaching, she could be found volunteering in the community and the local schools. She loved to watch the birds at her bird feeders from her dining room window and had many visitors, including finches, woodpeckers, bluebirds and her favorite, cardinals. Lately, she was smitten with spoiling her great-granddaughter, Madison.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband Arnold and her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Karen Danielsen and husband Monty of Spooner, Wis., and Gary Harvey and wife Jackie of Mesa, Ariz.; her children, Kristy and husband Ian Sheeler of Indianapolis and Beth and husband Myron Cohagan of Rochester; two grandchildren, Abigail and husband Jacob Richard and Evan Cohagan; and a great-granddaughter, Madison.

On Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, Margaret P. Stiles
Born in Trenton, N.J., on Sept. 13, 1943, Marge graduated from Moorestown High School in New Jersey and Hollins College in Virginia with a degree in history. In January 1969, she married Kenneth Stiles, and together they adventured with Jesus for almost 54 years.
Surviving her are her husband, Ken; her twin sons, John (Jenna) and Ken (Karin), and their children, Keely, Sera, Ethan and Heidi, Sophie and Lucy, respectively. Her surviving brothers and sisters are Don Palmer (Diane), Anne Strother, David Palmer (Pam) and Richard Palmer (Peggy), plus nieces and a nephew.
The theme of her life was faith, family, friends and community. Marge demonstrated her faith through praying for family, participating in Bible Study Fellowship and serving in various church ministries over the years. Whether attending family reunions, weddings, caring for her parents or hosting her own family, Marge was always at the center of the action. Annual vacations to the North Carolina beach exemplified the importance she placed on spending time together and strengthening family bonds.

A highlight for Ken and Marge was their trip to Alaska on a National Geographic cruise, where they were able to see the wonders of God’s creation up close, from whales to grizzly bears.

The Fulton County Board of Health will meet in regular session at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, in the large conference room in the Fulton County Office Building, 125 E. Ninth St., Rochester.
Future of EMS services topic of Jan. 17 meeting
The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will hold a public EMS meeting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, to kick off planning for the future of emergency medical services in the county.
The meeting will take place in the new Fulton County Justice and Detention Building, 2006 Sweetgum Road, Rochester. Enter through the side door.
The meeting is being held to take a proactive approach to the next EMS contract the county will enter, said Gail Karas, Fulton County 911 director.
The county’s current contract with Lutheran EMS will expire in less than two years.
Consultant Barry Ritter of Ritter Strategic Services, Richmond, has been hired to help guide a strategic planning process. More public meetings will be held in the future as planning progresses, Karas said.
Issues on the table, she said, could include the number and location of ambulances that serve the county and what that might cost.
Once a plan is developed, a request for proposals will be issued.
“We’re just doing some planning to see what Fulton County’s demands are and what people would like to see,” Karas said. “We want to make sure we’re best serving Fulton County and those who visit it.”

What to do if you have a positive pregnancy test?
Editor’s
Note: Chris Ricketts, M.D., is a family physician in obstetrics with Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, who practices at the Argos Medical Center. To schedule an appointment with him in Argos, call (574) 892-5131, or contact one of his colleagues in Rochester at (574) 223-2020.
What to do if you have a positive pregnancy test? First of all, congratulations.
Whether this is your first pregnancy or your 10th, it’s an exciting time. Prenatal care is very important, even if you’ve done this a few times. You will need to contact your current obstetrical provider or family doctor to schedule an appointment and share your great news.
We want to be sure your pregnancy is progressing normally and will order necessary labs and other tests, including an ultrasound. If you don’t have
an established provider for obstetrical needs, we have several physicians at Woodlawn who will be happy to take care of you during your pregnancy.
Stopping tobacco use, staying away from drugs and alcohol, avoiding over-the-counter medications such as Sudafed and ibuprofen and keeping those doctor’s appointments are a few important things you can do to help promote a healthy pregnancy.
If you would like help during this exciting time, one of my partners or I would be happy to assist you.

Let’s study the Bible
God
hears us (Read: Mark 11:1-26)
“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”
(Mark 11:24)
Christ’s Triumph Entry (Mark 11:1-11): This description of Christ’s “Triumphal Entry” may have surprised Mark’s Roman readers, who were accustomed to the glory of the “Roman Triumph.” This was the official welcoming parade given to a victorious Roman general whose armies killed at least 5,000 enemy soldiers, gained new territory for Rome, and brought home rich trophies and important prisoners.
The general rode in a golden chariot, surrounded by his officers; and in the parade he displayed his
treasures and prisoners. The Roman priests would be there, offering incense to their gods. Paul alludes to the Roman Triumph in 2 Corinthians 2:14-17.
But our Lord’s ride into Jerusalem involved a donkey, some garments and branches thrown on the ground, and the praises of some ordinary Passover pilgrims. It was the only time Jesus permitted a public demonstration on his behalf, and he did it to force the Jewish
New trail connector, bridge at Tippecanoe River State Park
Tippecanoe River State Park added a new trail connection between Trails 3 and 5, which included a new 30-foot footbridge.
The project was a cooperative effort involving the state, Friends of Tippecanoe River State Park and Boy Scout Troop No. 229, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported in a recent newsletter.
The Friends group provided most of the funding to purchase the bridge and much of the labor to install it.
Boy Scout Troop 229 provided the labor to create the new trail. The new, 1,500-foot section creates an additional loop to Tippecanoe’s trail system, providing visitors with more options for longer or shorter routes.
religious leaders to act during the Passover, when it was ordained he should die (Matthew 26:3-5).
Mark does not quote Zechariah 9:9, but he does quote Psalm 118:25-26 (Mark 11:9-10), a messianic psalm. Hosanna means, “Save now, we pray!” (“God save the king!”) When Jesus rode into the city, he proclaimed his Kingship, but he also signed his own death warrant.
Christ’s Mighty Power (Mark 11:12-14, 20-26): At first sight, this is a puzzling miracle. Passover was not the season for figs, yet the son of God had hoped to find fruit on the tree. When he did not find any, he used his divine power to destroy the tree instead of helping it to become fruitful.
Actually, the whole episode was a sermon in action. The tree represents the nation of Israel (Hosea 9:10, 16; Nahum 3:12), which, at that time, was producing no fruit to the glory of God. Its spiritual roots were dead (Mark 11:20; Matthew 3:10), and it could not produce fruit.
But Christ also used the miracle
to teach His disciples some practical lessons about faith and prayer. Mountains represent great difficulties that must be removed (Zechariah 4:7), and it is our faith in God that enables us to overcome.
But faith in God is not enough; we must also have forgiveness toward others (Mark 11:25-26). “But if ye do not forgive, neither will your father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses” (Mark 11:25).
We do not earn God’s forgiveness by forgiving others, but forgiving others shows we have a humble heart before our Lord (Mark 11:26).
We are to pray in times of adversity, we are to pray in times of prosperity, we are to pray in times of danger, we are to pray in times of security, sinners are to pray for forgiveness, and Christians are to pray for an outpouring of God’s Spirit upon an evil, unrepentant world.

Rochester sports roundup: Boys basketball improves to 6-3

Boys Basketball: Rochester 60, Oregon-Davis 19 (Saturday)
On his first shot against visiting Rochester at the Bobcat Den in Hamlet Saturday, Oregon-Davis senior Conner Danford banked in a 3-pointer.
That might have been a bad omen. As it turned out, the 28-1 Zebra run covering the first and second quarters was much more of a good omen.
Now Rochester has a three-game winning streak heading into the Tippecanoe Valley game.
Paul Leasure, who was held scoreless against Whitko 24 hours earlier, scored a game-high 14
points to lead the Zebras to a 60-19 win over the Bobcats.
Rochester improved to 6-3 and beat Oregon-Davis for the third straight year.
Conner Danford scored eight points for Oregon-Davis, who lost their third straight game and fell to 2-7.
“We’ve still kind of got that hitch a little bit in how we’re progressing, but we’re definitely going in the right direction,” Rochester coach Rob Malchow said.
Ten different Rochester players scored. That included eight points from Brock Bowers and seven
points from Drew Bowers, recently promoted from the junior varsity. Xavier Vance also had seven off the bench.
Rochester had more bench points (22) than O-D had total points.
Girls Basketball: Rochester 36, Whitko 27 (Saturday)
What happened for the Rochester girls basketball team in the second quarter against visiting Whitko stayed in the second quarter at the Rochester High School gym Saturday.
It was not to be repeated, but as it turned out, it did not have to be.
Rily Holloway scored all 11 of her points in the second quarter, and Rylee Clevenger added nine as the Lady Z’s earned a 36-27 win.
Ella McCarter added eight for Rochester, who improved to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in the Three Rivers Conference.
“We’re to nine wins,” Rochester coach Joel Burrus said. “These girls have set themselves up for a winning season if we can finish the deal here.”
Kloe Krieg led Whitko with nine points, and Gwen Howard scored eight.
Whitko fell to 6-8, 0-5, as they lost their 33rd consecutive conference game. They have not beaten Rochester since Jan. 7, 2017, and they have not won a conference game since beating Wabash on Jan. 25, 2019.
Rochester won despite not recording a field goal in the first or fourth quarters, but in the second quarter, they had eight field goals — six of them three 3-pointers — and scored 24 points in a 5:32 span to turn a 6-2 deficit after one quarter into a 26-12 lead. They led by 12 at the half and built the lead to as big as 16 in the third quarter.
The 24-point quarter was their largest of the season.
Wrestling: Rochester Places Third At Class 1A Team State Duals (Saturday)
The Rochester wrestling team went 2-1 and finished in third place out of 12 teams at the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Class 1A team state duals at Franklin Community High School Saturday.
Rochester was the No. 1 seed and undefeated in dual matches coming into the tournament.
They earned a first-round bye and then beat Prairie Heights 5319 in the quarterfinals.
They then lost to No. 4 Tell City 38-36 in the semifinals before bouncing back to beat No. 2 Cascade 53-21 in the third-place match.
Tell City went on to win the team state title for the third straight year with a 49-27 win over Adams Central. It also marked the second straight year Tell City beat Roches-
ter at the team state duals.
They beat Rochester 36-33 in the state title match last year.
Rochester’s Brady Beck (220 pounds) won his 100th career match during the tournament. He joins Ethan Holloway (120 pounds) and Greyson Gard (152 pounds) among current Zebras with 100 or more career wins.
Rochester will travel to Tippecanoe Valley for a dual at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Three Rivers Conference tournament is at Maconaquah Jan. 21.
Boys Basketball: Rochester 48, Whitko 45 (Friday)
Tanner Reinartz made five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 19 points, and Brock Bowers added 12 for the Rochester boys basketball team as they recorded a 4845 win over host Whitko Friday in South Whitley.
Luke Hunting added nine points for the Zebras, but his biggest contribution might have been a rebound of Kyler Krull’s intentionally missed free throw with 3.8 seconds left and the Zebras clinging to a 4745 lead.
Hunting then made the first free throw with 1.4 seconds left to make it 48-45 but missed the second. Jaylen Gibson rebounded the miss, but Whitko had no timeouts left, and Gibson’s 65-footer at the buzzer was no good off the backboard as time expired.
Krull, a 6’6” guard-wing who came in averaging 19 points per game, led Whitko with 22, including all seven Wildcat points in the fourth quarter.
Riley Harman added a careerhigh 19, including four 3-pointers.
Rochester improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Three Rivers Conference. Whitko fell to 1-8, 0-3. This marked the fourth straight year the road team has won between these teams.
