Stacey Carvey-Schoenhals was “always giving to kids,” said her husband, Lukas.

Though the couple didn’t have children of their own, Carvey-Schoenhals, who served on the Rochester Community School Board, considered RCS students her kids, said Schoenhals.

Now, almost a year after her passing in January 2023, Carvey-Schoenhals is memorialized through a resource at Rochester Middle School providing items to help RCS students.

Stacey’s Closet formally opened in a room off the cafeteria at RMS in late 2023.

It includes clothing, shoes,

hygiene items and school supplies free to any RCS students.

The closet is open any time school is in session.

Schoenhals, RMS assistant principal, said Carvey-Schoenhals was aware of a similar closet at Caston School Corp. and wanted to bring it to RCS. He said the idea for the closet was also spurred by RMS’ annual etiquette luncheon when students dress up and practice their manners.

“Stacey (would) run to Walmart and buy whatever (dress clothes) kids needed, and that’s kind of where this came out of,” said Schoenhals.

Following Carvey-Schoenhals’ passing, Schoenhals with his mother-in-law Gloria Carvey, sister-in-law Lisa Reffett, Rochester Middle School Principal Cassie Murphy, RMS fifth grade teacher Rebecca Bolinger, and others gathered together to create a scholarship in memory of Carvey-Schoenhals.

Schoenhals noted to start a scholarship fund through the Fulton County Community Foundation “it takes $28,000.”

Animals are ‘lifelong passion’ for new Fulton County animal control officer

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Fulton County’s new animal control officer Calista Kelley says animals are a “lifelong passion” of hers.

“I was watching Animal Planet instead of cartoons when I was a kid,” she said. “Steve Irwin was a huge inspiration of mine.”

Kelley, of Rochester, started as control officer in December. Taking the role meant a return to working with animals.

Kelley, who’s a home-school graduate originally from Mishawaka, previously worked at Martin’s Paw Mart in Mishawaka and a horse stable.

Right before becoming animal control officer, she was a keyholder for the Rochester R.P. Home and Harvest’s farm department.

“I never thought I would go the law enforcement route,” Kelley noted of her plans to work with animals. “I always thought it would be vet med, but I’m happy in general to be working with animals and hopefully helping the public, too.”

Kelley trained for the job by riding along with her Cass County counterpart, Brian Hyder, for a week.

She’s based out of the Fulton

County Sheriff’s Office, working from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and being “on call” for emergencies beyond that.

Her main tasks include responding to animal bite scenes, containing loose animals, and doing animal welfare checks.

Other instances when Kelley would be called out include disasters such as fires where animals may need taken somewhere to stay or traffic stops when animals are in the vehicle and their owner is arrested.

Kelley said she will first try to see if a family or friend can take the animals in, with her second option being transporting them to the Fulton County Animal Adoption and Education Center.

The latter isn’t what Kelley prefers to do as “there are reclaim fees and sometimes those can make it really difficult for the owners to get them back.”

“My goal anyway is to keep as many animals as we can in their homes because the moment they get into the shelter system, it’s really difficult after that,” she said.

So far her work calls have mainly included cats and dogs, though she “checked on some sheep not too long ago,” she said.

“I love working with people and educating them, especially when it comes to animals because it’s a passion of mine,” she said.

A downside of the job is seeing animal neglect, she said.

“I haven’t personally experienced a lot of negatives yet, but that’s definitely the major one and

Animals also are a big part of Kelley’s personal life.

She and her husband, Nathan, have two cats, Cassie and Stevie; three snakes, Billy, Vivienne and Raven; and a gecko, Vex.

As for what she would tell Fulton County animal owners in general, Kelley said it’s to stay up on current laws.

Stacey’s Closet is one of the foundation’s products.

“The foundation infused about $8,000, $9,000 in here and that was to get all of the things that you see, all of the hygiene products and all the stuff like that,” said Schoenhals.

The Stacey Carvey-Schoenhals Foundation is also funding “an entire year’s worth of free movies for kiddos” at the Times Theater in Rochester and meals for Rochester Community High School sports teams, said Schoenhals.

Stacey’s Closet is overseen by RMS staffers, Valerie Good and Deanna VandenBossche.

Obituaries Naomi Starr Hoffman Early Pioneer For Organ Procurement

Naomi Starr Hoffman, 62, Winamac, passed away at the Pulaski Health Care Center after a lengthy battle with multiple sclerosis on Dec. 29, 2023.

On Feb. 12, 1961, Starr was born of Joy Byers and William Sheridan. Growing up in Kewanna, Starr shared her childhood with her younger sister, Twyla. Starr graduated from Wi- NAOMI STARR HOFFMAN namac Community High School in 1979.

To pursue her dream of caring and helping others, Starr graduated from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne in 1983. Following her education at Fort Wayne, Starr pursued her bachelor’s degree in nursing at St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, 1991. She provided care to many patients at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Logansport Memorial and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Plymouth, Indiana. She furthered her education by obtaining a master’s degree in management from Indiana Wesleyan University in 1996. Starr worked in many different areas of nursing which included oncology, critical care, home health care and was an early pioneer for organ procurement.

At home, Starr was passionate about her cats, dogs and any furry creature that needed food and bed to sleep. She never turned away a stray animal that needed a home.

Starr is survived by her mother, Joy Byers of Rochester; her sister, Twyla Rader and her husband Bill, Danville; a nephew, Wil Beaty (Madison) of Coatesville; uncles, Dale Byers (Jeannie), Logansport, Dean Byers (Clarisse), Plymouth, and Jay Byers (Martine), Logansport; and many cousins.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Mount Hope Cemetery Chapel, Logansport.

Kurt Lee VanSteenberg U.S. Air Force Veteran Kurt Lee VanSteenberg, 67, Marion, passed away at 8:43 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, at his residence.

He was born on March 1, 1956, in Smyrna, Tenn., the son of Leslie Joe and Marjorie (Kratzman) VanSteenberg.

Nancy Lebo Clay, 90, Rochester, passed away at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, at Woodbridge Health Campus of Logansport.

On Nov. 16, 1933, Nancy Jean Hopper was born in Rochester to Alfred L. and Ruth E. Barts Hopper. She was the fourth of a family of seven children. Proudly she graduated with the class NANCY LEBO of 1952 from Rochester High School.

CLAY Nancy and Gordon V. Lebo were married on Sept. 4, 1953, in Rochester. They shared 41 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away on Aug. 11, 1994. From their union came three children, Gayle, Garrick “Gary” and Gordon “Mike.”

On Sept. 29, 1996, Nancy and Richard Clay were married at the First Christian Church. He passed away on July 3, 2018.

As a homemaker, Nancy cherished the time with her family.

She often prepared her famous chicken and noodles for family gatherings. Being community-minded, Nancy volunteered for the Fulton County Blood Drives and the Trail of Courage. She made her delicious chocolate chip cookies and meals for her co-workers.

Her memberships include the First Christian Church of Rochester and the Kappa Delta Phi Sorority for 50 plus years. Over the years, Nancy was a card shark, she showed her hand while playing euchre and bridge around the table with her friends.

Cruising international waters were enjoyed with friends, Mary and Wayne Alber. Nancy also traveled to Dubai twice to visit her grandson.

Left to cherish the memories of Nancy are daughter, Gayle Rodriguez of Rochester; two sons, Gary Lebo and lifelong friend, Kelly Shambarger, of Middletown, Ohio, and Mike Lebo and wife Sue of Greenburg; eight grandchildren, Abygayle, Jacob, Jenifer, Stacy, Stephanie, Garrett, Gwendolyn and Michaila; five great-grandchildren, Peyton, Ebony, Bryant, Darius and Abraham; sister, Barbara Swihart of Rochester; blended family members, Vince Stewart and companion Gretchen Hart of Rochester, Tony Stewart and wife Chim of Kokomo, Libby Mayes and husband Dan of Martinsville, David Clay and companion Susan Brumsfield of Terre Haute; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Nancy in death are her parents; husband; son-inlaw, Mark Rodriguez; four sisters, Carol Hedrick, Kay Payne, Martha West and Dortha Eads; and a brother, Garl Hopper.

A celebration of the life of Nancy Clay was held at noon Wednesday, Jan. 3, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends visited with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment was in Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Debra D. Rust Galloway Homemaker Debra Denise Rust Galloway, 65, Rochester, passed away at 12:35 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, at her residence.

She was born on March 26, 1958, in Plymouth, the daughter of Dallas Rust and Virginia Sue Swift.

She had been a homemaker and enjoyed crafts, playing bingo, board games, going to the DEBRA D. RUST GALLOWAY casinos, classic TV shows and spending time with her family.

Richard E. Day, 94, Akron and Rochester, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023, in Life Care Center, Rochester.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1929.

On Sept. 4, 1947, he married Julia Ann RICHARD E. DAY Bidwell; who preceded him in death on March 14, 1996. On Sept. 28, 2002, he married Georgia Ann Delp; who preceded him in death on June 10, 2021.

He is survived by his children, Pamela Vandermark, and Joe (Marianne) Day, both of Akron; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and stepchildren, David (Caren) Delp and John (Jennifer) Delp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen (Miller) Day; grandson, Patrick Day; and sons-in-law, Joey Madeford and Jim Vandermark.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 3, in Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Rev. Tara Hornbacker and Jim Saner officiating.

Interment was held in Akron Cemetery, Akron.

She was born on April 20, 1957, in Rochester, the daughter of Eugene and Annabelle (Swan) Hart.

Gretchen was a 1975 Rochester High School graduate and attended Indiana State University.

Gretchen had been a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and enjoyed shopping, watching western movies, puzzles and collecting antiques.

Survivors include her son, Christopher Walter, Greenwood; companion, Vince Stewart, Rochester; and uncle, Jim (Kathy) Cross, Valparaiso.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Christopher Elsworth Hart.

Services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends visited from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 and one hour prior to service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial was in the Citizens Cemetery, Rochester.

Carolyn Lee Hodgson 1954 RHS Zebra Salutatorian Former Rochester resident Carolyn Lee Hodgson RN, 87, passed away peacefully on the morning of Dec. 30, 2023, at Munson Hospital in Cadillac, Mich.

On Sept. 1, 1936, Carolyn L. Burkett was born to the late Otis and Beulah (Shonk) Burkett, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was the second of three daughters and is survived by her older sister, Joyce Good of Rochester, and was preceded in death CAROLYN LEE HODGSON by her younger sister, Sharon Hurd, and an infant brother, John Burkett.

As salutatorian of her class, Carolyn graduated from Rochester High School in 1954. She went on to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse after turning 40, ultimately earning her bachelor of science in nursing degree and becoming a registered nurse. With great devotion to her patients and a love for medicine, she enjoyed working for two decades at the Cadillac Mercy Hospital (now Munson), eventually specializing in oncology nursing.

On Sept. 2, 1991, Carolyn married Bruce Hodgson. Together they lived near Cadillac and were surrounded by Bruce’s children and grandchildren. He preceded her in death in 2011. Carolyn and Bruce enjoyed many family events, including pancake breakfasts at the family park and camping with the grandchildren.

A mother very proud of her legacy, Carolyn raised four children, Gregory McMillen (Lisa) of Rochester, who preceded her in death, Jazanne McMillen of Gallatin Gateway, Mont., Cheryl McMillen (Connie Juntunen) of Falls Church, Va., and Mitchell McMillen (Lisa Durba) of New Milford, Conn. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Melea Justice (Branden) of Macy, Garrett McMillen of Rochester, Alex McMillen of Arlington, Va., and Erin McMillen of Falls Church, Va. Carolyn also had three great-grandchildren, including Bristol Justice, Gatlin McMillen and Gentry McMillen.

Infant grandson, Blaine McMillen, preceded her in 1987.

A celebration of Carolyn Burkett Hodgson’s life will be scheduled at a later date.

U.S. Navy Veteran

Lowell C. Hisey, 90, Rochester, passed away at 5:06 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, at Parkview Hospital of Fort Wayne.

On Dec. 24, 1933, Lowell Hisey was born in Fulton County near Talma to James Wilfred and Sadie Catherine Young Hisey. Proudly he graduated with the class of 1951 from Talma High School, where he earned the LOWELL C. honor of being salutatorian. Answering the call of paHISEY triotism, Lowell served on the USS Valley Forge with the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1957.

Lowell and Shirley A. Redman were married on April 27, 1960, in Bourbon. They have shared 63 years of life’s adventures. From their union came two daughters and two sons. The family tree continued to grow with the blessings of five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lowell began his career as a clerk at the Rochester Post Office and later became a carrier. He served the community for 33 years. Lowell was a member of a euchre club that included family and friends. He also enjoyed the area golf courses and throwing horse shoes. Nothing was better than rolling strikes at the bowling alley. The Hisey’s loved to camp. One of their favorite places was Potato Creek. While there, they loved to watch the wildlife, feed and observe the birds.

Left to cherish Lowell’s memory are his wife Shirley of Rochester; daughter, Debra Baumgartner and husband Jay of Warsaw; son, Mark Hisey and wife Kathy of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Lauren Reining and husband Mike, Matthew Hisey, Ryan Baumgartner and wife Anne, Eric Baumgartner and Kyle Baumgartner; three great-grandchildren, Drayke Reining, Parker Reining and Asher Baumgartner; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Lowell in death are his parents; daughter, Jeri Lynn Hisey, April 9, 1968, at the age of 5; son, Brent M. Hisey on May 30, 2019; sister, Chloa Mae Hisey; and five Hisey brothers, 1-year-old Glen, Dale, Gerald, Doyle and Keith.

A celebration of the life of Lowell Hisey will be at noon Friday, Jan. 12, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

Donna Gearhart, 89, Rochester, and longtime Fulton resident, passed away at 6:58 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, 2023, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester, after a brief illness.

She was born on Jan. 9, 1934, in Rochester, the daughter of Lee and Irene (Smith) Becker. On May 2, 1954, in Akron, she married Larry V. Gearhart. He DONNA preceded her in death on May 23, 2023.

GEARHART Early in her life, Donna had worked as seamstress, sewing for a manufacturing plant in Akron, and later in life worked part-time for Kroger. Donna was also a dedicated homemaker, raising her three children, Rick, Greg and Diane. She, along with her husband Larry, were enthusiasts of antique furniture, figurines and dishes, which led to them opening Gearhart Antiques. She spent many happy hours doing all types of crafts, especially wreaths and flower arrangements. She loved decorating her home with flowers and some of her favorite antiques that she collected over years. An avid animal lover, she enjoyed all her animals, especially her cats. Donna had been a member of the Fulton Baptist Temple.

Survivors include her children, Rick (Amy) Gearhart, Winamac, and Diane Gearhart, Rochester; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Gearhart, Fulton; grandchildren, Timothy Gearhart, Winamac, Jessica Gearhart, Pennsylvania, Heath Gearhart, Fulton, Misty Gearhart, Fulton, Brandon Gearhart, Indianapolis, and Kristen Gearhart, Fulton; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Greg Gearhart.

Procrastinating unhealthy for long-term health care

Fulton County Marketing Committee seeking contributions The Fulton County Tourism Commission and Fulton County Chamber of Commerce announce the formation of the Fulton County Marketing Committee, a collaborative effort of marketing professionals dedicated to welcoming residents and professionals to the community. Comprised of individuals representing various corners of Fulton County, the mission is to bolster the county’s workforce population while extending a warm embrace to newcomers and returning residents.

With a focus on promoting a welcoming environment, the committee’s inaugural project is the creation of welcome bags designed to be presented to new residents and available for employers to provide to prospective professionals considering Fulton County as their home. These welcome bags will include an assortment of local personalized welcome letters from community leaders, and a newly created digital relocation guide.

The Fulton County Marketing Committee is currently seeking businesses and organizations interested in providing promotional items and contributing to the welcome bags.

Eating well is a form of self-care

By CAT WILSON Guest Columnist We all need to put our healthcare in the forefront of our busy days, which is easy to say, yet some days are nearly impossible. Right? I am right there with you.

It’s true that every bite improves or damages our health and our fight against disease in the long-term, so let’s recap a few items as we think about the holidays and 2024.

Constant eating is bad on the gut biome. Your body needs time to digest and use the energy you have consumed already. Fifty percent of Americans eat from 8 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., nearly 15 hours.

Reduce your eating window to no more than 12 hours by either pushing breakfast to mid-morning or eating earlier in the evening and then being done — nothing else — done. Do not eat within two hours of going to bed.

Forget about KETO. Logic alone tells you consuming vast amounts of fat, animal meat and all the cheese you can consume will not make for a healthy body. It is not sustainable, does not give you the micro nutrients you need, it has a higher all-cause mortality rate, causes fatigue, hair loss, and a 30 percent higher rate of birth defects.

Don’t be afraid of the good, complex whole food carbs like the simple potato or beans; be afraid of simple trashy carbs like over-processed breads, desserts and sugary

Speaking of fiber: per day women need 25 grams and men need 35 grams — minimum. Get it from food. Eat more plants.

Sugar — we could talk about it all day. Visualize it — a can of soda has 39 grams of added sugar, divide that by four, it equals nearly 10 teaspoons of sugar in one can! Use that formula for every can, box or package you pick up. Women should get no more than 25 grams (6 teaspoons) a day and men 36 grams (9 teaspoons).

Table salt is composed primarily of sodium chloride. Daily recommendation is 2,300 mg per day, which is 1 teaspoon. Only 13 percent of the salt we consume comes from the shaker we use at home.

The biggest culprits are restau-

rants, processed and packaged foods. Be aware.

Every bite counts — make it be a whole food. Add vegetables to everything. Eat raw & cooked. Fill up with fruit & vegetables and you won’t have room for the high calorie/low nutrient foods. Make and eat soup all winter long. Make bread that has five ingredients instead of 25 ingredients.

It’s so easy — whole unprocessed food, but the world makes it so hard. Hang in there and be your best self.

New Akron Chamber President Haney wants to share how ‘wonderful’ hometown is

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Orville Haney wants to share how “wonderful” his hometown of Akron is.

“I just want to get the word out about how wonderful of a town we have,” he said. “I think as Midwesterners we do not toot our horn. We are humble, and everyone will benefit in our town from people knowing how good it is.”

Haney, who lives just outside Akron, was named the Akron Chamber of Commerce president in December. That follows his serving as vice president.

He noted he chose to originally become involved with the chamber due to planning to move his real estate office to Akron and desiring “to highlight Akron as a wonderful place to be.”

Haney is a 1998 Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate and obtained his bachelor’s degree in animal sciences from Purdue University in 2002.

He was later recognized as a

Distinguished Alumnus of both schools.

Haney first worked in agriculture, including at his family’s dairy farm and Maple Leaf Farms.

He received the state Young Farmer Achievement Award from Indiana Farm Bureau in 2011, followed by being named as the one of the American Farm Bureau’s top 10 Young Farmers and Ranchers in 2012.

In 2013, Haney served as Indiana Farm Bureau’s state Young Farmer Committee president.

After graduating from Beer School of Real Estate and getting his broker’s license, Haney entered the real estate field.

He runs Haney Real Estate Services LLC and is involved with Homes, Land and Lakes Realty.

As he starts out as chamber president, Haney noted former chamber president DeLynn Geiger and his wife, former chamber secretary Lori Tilden-Geiger, have been “great mentors.”

He said they’ve “instilled in me what their vision was when they

took the initiative to revitalize the board and it is (chamber leadership’s) full intention to build upon that.”

Haney said he and other chamber leadership are working to make operations as transparent as possible for members.

As chamber president, Haney said “it’s an honor” to serve his neighbors.

“Growing up local, I got to do business with a lot of the existing businesses and to be a part of enhancing them or our livelihood as a whole is a real honor because they’re my neighbors I’ve looked up to,” he said. “It’s important to me to make things better for them on the homefront.”

“As a majority, people in Akron honor God and that keeps us in good favor and I see that continuing,” he added. “There are so many good people in Akron that it’s hard not to walk away a better person when you get to deal with them.”

Haney is married to Kendra Haney, and they have five children.

Older Hoosiers have a resource to address climate change

By TERRI DEE Indiana News Service From excessive heat to flooding, environmental extremes can disproportionately affect older people, according to Purdue University’s Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment. Cornell University has created a consortium to increase awareness and encourage older people to play a more visible role in fighting climate change.

The country is feeling the chill of winter now, but 2023 will be in the history books as the hottest year on record. And worries are growing about how climate change will affect the most vulnerable segment of the population – the elderly.

By 2025, nearly 19% of all Hoosiers will be age 65 or older. And in 62 of Indiana’s 92 counties, that figure will exceed 20%. Cornell University has created its “Aging and Climate Change Clearinghouse” to examine this intersection. Gerontology Professor Karl

Pillemer says the clearinghouse has a dual purpose.

“This new clearinghouse is aimed at bringing together researchers, environmental and aging organizations and older people who are wondering, ‘How can I get involved, and what should I be doing to protect myself now?’”

Pillemer notes that older Hoosiers may wonder if their actions to combat climate change would make a difference. The consortium will offer strategies for older adults and environmental organizations to partner on solutions.

A Purdue University report, “Indiana Climate Change Impacts Assessment,” says that since 1895, Indiana’s statewide annual average temperature has risen by 1-point-2 degrees Fahrenheit, or about a tenth of a degree Fahrenheit per decade.

The report also reveals that since 1960, the average annual temperature has risen fourtenths of a degree Fahrenheit per

decade year round. Pillemer says warmer summer temperatures already present warning signs.

“There have been many studies of extreme heat events. Older people living alone are vastly, disproportionately likely to die or to become sick in those extreme heat events.”

The report also indicates the warming trend has sped up in recent decades. And as temperatures climb, the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke will increase. Other related impacts, such as climate change-related flooding, will mean more mold, and more mosquitoes and ticks – along with the diseases they carry.

The quartet sang for more than a decade without ever selecting a name. The four men started as a smaller version of the men’s ensemble at church and would sing in churches and venues because they enjoyed singing. Then a concert scheduler started referring to the men as No Name Quartet.

The men like the idea that it isn’t about them but about Je-

sus and he is the one worthy of all the praise. They echo Peter’s message in Acts 4:12: “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

The No Name Quartet delights audiences with their mix of gospel and inspirational music, onstage humor and blending vocals. The group has grown into a highly- requested quartet. It has sang the national anthem at Banker’s Life Field House in Indianapolis, as well as recently singing alongside well-known

gospel artists The Booth Brothers, The Guardians, Triumphant Quartet and Wes Hampton of the Gaither Vocal Band.

No Name Quartet loves the local church and considers the intimacy of the church sanctuary as one of the best venues for communicating gospel truth through song. Although the group has stayed out of the spotlight, No Name Quartet continues to shine the light on the Lord they sing about.

Hospitals practice emergency drills

Hospitals are a beehive of activity including people working, and patients having tests and procedures, not to mention, family and friends visiting. Hospitals strive for a safe and quiet environment to promote the healing of their patients. But occasionally, you hear a message on the overhead speaker. Why are these messages important?

Overhead paging is part of the hospital alert system to notify hospital employees an emergency response is needed to a certain situation. Often, these alerts are for real life situations, which require an all-hands-on deck response to assist a patient with an emergency medical condition, such as a possible stroke or heart attack or another crisis. Sometimes, these overhead pages are drills for the staff.

Why do hospitals practice response drills? Training in a class-

An emergency drill is a practice run of an emergency procedure.

Drills provide training and develop or test new procedures along with maintaining employee skills.

So, next time you are in the hospital and hear an overhead page for a drill, know that the team is practicing staying safe in case of an emergency.

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Fulton County voters will find a number of local office positions along with those at the state and national levels on their 2024 ballots.

Filing for the 2024 primary starts Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Positions up for election this year locally include those below with current office holders noted: Fulton Superior Court Judge, Greg Heller.

Fulton County Auditor, Christina Sriver.

Fulton County Coroner, Jeri Good.

Fulton County Treasurer, Kathy Adamson.

Fulton County Commissioner District 1, Dave Sommers.

Fulton County Commissioner District 3, Rick Ranstead.

Fulton County Council AtLarge, three seats, Steve Fishburn, Lorie Hurst and Phyl Olinger.

A quieter year for health care bills

By WHITNEY DOWNARD Indiana Capital Chronicle After several years with backto-back, complex health care legislation, stakeholders still believe there’s work to be done while allowing for in-progress initiatives to mature.

The upcoming session will be a non-budget year in which leaders have urged their members to prioritize emergency legislation and speed — a move that would grant the 125 General Assembly members up for election more time to campaign.

Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Val-

paraiso, doesn’t anticipate the same big legislation of 2023. As the Chair of the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee, he authored, co-authored and sponsored several hefty bills, including public health funding, monitoring pharmacy benefit managers and tracking prices at five prominent non-profit hospital systems.

But others see the need for “constructive” changes quicker rather than later, including the very hospitals who took a hit in the 2023 session.

said the organization is working on a proposal to address interwoven issues related to the state’s Hospital Assessment Fee and Medicaid rates — the latter of which hospitals claim is so low they must shift costs to private insurers, thus raising prices.

Tabor said such moves wouldn’t require reopening the budget but would still necessitate legislation to change existing statute. However, after a $1 billion Medicaid accounting snafu earlier this week, addressing Medicaid rates will be a hard sell in 2024. But Tabor said the entity’s proposal includes a state assessment on managed care plans, which could be used to leverage federal funding and offset Medicaid costs alongside hospital expenses.

It’s become necessary to ponder and plan our day-to-day programs: when and how to get shopping done, make doctor’s appointments, visit the grandchildren, attend church service, and everything else.

The mantra — wear a mask, wash your hands, maintain distance, stay home if you’re sick — has been accepted as a basis for protecting yourself and your loved ones.

But reports of opening and closing businesses, recurring COVID-19 attacks, and conflicting analyses and announcements by an array of politicians, medical experts and television talking heads have only added to the confusion that feeds indecision on what to do.

Oldsters are under a larger shadow because, just for starters, they are more vulnerable to the array of viruses than the younger population.

Amidst all this chatter is the

ongoing resistance to medical defenses on offer. Rightly or wrongly, only 30 percent of the population gets a flu shot each year.

All this clamor makes it difficult to hear what you’ve told yourself to do to stay healthy.

Get enough sleep. Eight hours of sleep has long been recognized and recommended as the requisite length of time you should log daily.

Eat right. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, as fresh as possible, should be part of your diet.

Stay active. A 10 or 15 minute daily walk works wonders. Just walk around the block. It’s not only healthy, you’ll get you to know your neighbors. You might get to enjoy it and decide to do it twice a day — before and after noon.

But while a Hoosier may be able to compare the cost of a hip replacement across hospitals, not everyone is convinced it’ll make a difference in bringing down prices. Charbonneau noted that employers, through company insurance policies, paid the majority of costs and Hoosiers choosing between options are likely to consider other factors.

Consumers are less likely to travel further for a cheaper hip replacement if it’s only their employers or insurers seeing the cost savings, he said.

Health Care In 2025 And Beyond Tabor said he hoped he ongoing data collection efforts would help leaders take a more nuanced and thoughtful approach to health care, even if those efforts wouldn’t all happen in 2024.

Additional, smaller pieces of legislation for 2024 might address workforce shortages in nursing but overall not the hefty pieces of legislation from 2023.

Charbonneau didn’t rule out the possibility of some health care legislation, saying he was considering a bill to monitor the 340B Drug Pricing Program, which allows certain financially strapped hospitals to purchase expensive pharmaceuticals at a discount. However, Charbonneau wanted to know which hospitals used the program and whether some of the state’s serving wealthier populations were benefitting over poorer systems.

Hiroms is going to state for the second straight year. Peppler and McKee will both be making their first state appearances.

Peppler defeated West Noble’s Jazmyne Espinoza by fall in 1:00 and Angola’s Mia Walker by fall in 2:10 to reach the semifinals and earn her state berth before pinning Blackford’s Addison Flores in 4:29 to reach the final.

Hiroms came in 18-3 on the day. She then lost to Eastside freshman Rhaigyn Trenary, ranked second, by fall in 2:20 in the semifinals before recovering to beat New Haven’s Kaily Bussard by fall in 4:11 to win the third-place match.

Rochester improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the Three Rivers Conference. Whitko fell to 5-3, 1-2. Rochester beat Whitko for the third time in four years, but for the first time at home since Jan. 10, 2014.

Girls Basketball Ella McCarter scored 13 points, and Rylee Clevenger added 10, but the Rochester girls basketball team suffered their first Three Rivers Conference loss with a 46-41 defeat to host Whitko Saturday.

McCarter scored three straight baskets, one of which was a 3-pointer, to tie the game at 36.

In a game with Plymouth Jan. 3, Lena Jones hit two crucial 3-pointers in the second half and

scored 11 points. Sophie Miller and Rylee Mann added 10 each as Plymouth recovered to win 44-39.

Swimming Rochester returned from Winter Break with both the girls and boys losing to host Maconaquah Thursday. The girls lost 146-36, and the boys fell 124-60.

In the boys meet, Rochester’s Jake Seuferer won both the 50 and 100 freestyles. Spencer Backus took the 100 butterfly.

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The Akron Chamber of Commerce’s new leadership is ready to build off DeLynn Geiger and Lori Tilden-Geiger’s previous work with the organization for 2024.

Leaders said they credited former president Geiger and secretary Tilden-Geiger with giving the chamber a fresh start.

“We need to as a new board give credit to DeLynn Geiger and Lori Tilden-Geiger for really revamping the chamber, and what we look forward to doing in 2024 is maintain and hopefully build upon what they’ve handed us,”

said new chamber President Orville Haney.

“I think we’re excited about continuing what they’ve done in recent years,” added Chamber Treasurer Tom Bauters.

Leaders discussed plans and developments for the year, which include the impact of numerous homes and businesses being named to the National Register of Historic Places. The chamber assisted with that process, with grant funds as a result of it coming in spring 2024, said Bauters.

That means businesses in the town may get special tax credits and use grant funds to redo buildings.

“We’re excited about what it’s going to bring to Akron,” said Bauters.

Haney said the chamber hopes “to build upon” new events started in 2023 for 2024: the town’s farmers market and Autumn in Akron Charity Car, Truck and Bike Show, with Aryn Bowser and Nancee Ward helping lead those events respectively.

Other chamber-involved events for the year should include the Easter egg hunt, Christmas tree lighting and annual Christmas open house, and of course, Fourth of July.

Bauters cited the hard work the Fourth of July committee, which is under the umbrella of the chamber, does every year.

The chamber should also continue to honor members of the month for 2024, said Bauters.

The organization had 55 members for 2023, including individuals, businesses and nonprofits.

“We’ve really done well with the local community,” noted Bauters of membership, adding members are from Kosciusko County, Wabash County and Miami County as well as Fulton County.

“You could take a 20-minute drive and be in four counties from Akron,” said Haney. “We’re unique with our location that we get to pull from surrounding counties.”

He added he believed the chamber’s success “has hinged on our transparency with our funds and our objective to enhance the livelihood of our local businesses and local people because the two go hand in hand.”

“We enhance the community,” said Haney. “We give opportunities for like-minded citizens to mingle and interact with business owners.”

“The best way to get involved in the community is to get involved in the chamber,” added Boster.

The chamber generally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., with the next meeting Feb. 1 at Akron Town Hall. Nonmembers are welcome to come check the chamber out.

If people wish to join, annual dues for the chamber vary, following under $75 for businesses/ industries with more than 10 employees; $50 for businesses or industries with fewer employees than that; and $25 for individuals/churches/nonprofits.
