Lingenfelter says goodbye to Rochester community %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU There comes a point in nearly every chapter of a person’s life when they realize it’s just time to move on. Not necessarily because the situation is bad, but because it’s just time to try some different. Such is the case for the nowformer golf pro at the Round Barn Golf Club, Lyle Lingenfelter. After 19 years in the Rochester community and the city’s popular golf course, Lingenfelter decided it was time to turn the page. “I love everything about golf,” he said. “I love teaching the game, fitting the clubs, talking about the game. What I didn’t necessarily love were the reports, the meetings, selling candy bars and beer. But I understood that it was all part of the job. Over the years it became much more about managing the business and less about golf. “Rochester has been very good to me and my family. I hope that I’m leaving the course better off than when I came. I have great memories of all the people I met along the way and had a great time being a part of the community.” When Lingenfelter started compiling a list of people he wanted to thank for making his experience in Rochester so positive, he quickly realized whatever he wrote down would undoubtedly be incomplete because of the volume of people he came across in his two decades in Fulton County. A native of Terre Haute, Lingenfelter was living in Louisiana when the opportunity to come to Rochester presented itself. He was thrilled to return

to Indiana and work at a public golf course. “I was always much more comfortable at a public course rather than an elite country club,” he said. “I identify much more with public course people because that’s who I learned the game from growing up. I would show up at the course and play with people I didn’t know.” During his time at RBGC, Lingenfelter believes he did the best he could to make it the best course possible within the budget he was given. He said he was blessed with the people who worked at the course and in the golf shop, including retirees and high school kids. “That’s what made the job so fun,” he noted. “I enjoyed coming to work nearly every day. I received great support from the park board, the community, the golfers and the staff.” Lingenfelter added his appreciation to his family who often bore the brunt of his long hours spent in his job. From early spring to late fall, he often spent 70-80 hours at the course, including weekends, holidays and during other occasions most people were able to be with their family. “With the golf course open 100 hours a week, when something goes wrong when you aren’t there, as the golf pro you’re still ultimately responsible,” he added. For the past several years, Lingenfelter has been the head coach

Karah, left, posted a lifetime best round of 90 that day while Kristianna posted a round of 80 that moved her on to a playoff and the 2020 IHSAA state flnals. However, he often had to leave weekend assignments to his assistant coach because he wasn’t able to spend a spring Saturday away from his job. Several of the Lingenfelter’s 10 children went through the Rochester school system. Now Lingenfelter and his wife, Cana, have moved on to their next adventure, which includes a home in Seymour and a job in Colum-
bus. Lingenfelter has taken a job working for a longtime friend in the car sales business, something he admitted he never envisioned doing but he is now in complete peace in taking on. “There’s certainly a perception difference going from a golf pro to a car salesmen,” he said. “But I’ll have more time to spend with my family, hit golf balls in my back yard and get back to enjoying the game.”
