Rochester has a new place downtown for people in need of support. Recovery Café is located at 715 Main St. The café is a judgement free zone and help center with a primary focus on substance use, mental health, sexual abuse and military veterans. Executive director Pat Brown, the lead of the substance use committee at Fulton County H.O.P.E., has stepped in to fill the lead at Recovery Café. Recovery Café is a network with multiple locations throughout the United States. Rochester’s location follows the same model and creates a nurturing community space with recovery circles, or small group meetings where attendees receive a free meal and spend their time sharing and connecting with one another Wednesday through Saturday. “We have volunteers with 30 years in grief counseling. We want people who experience a loss of any kind to feel welcome and feel like we are a place they can find some comfort and understanding,” said Brown. The café is led by volunteers and the people who facilitate groups

have life experience and have gonee through café training. Currently there are four to fivee volunteers and a group of back upp volunteers. Brown said, “The dayy we opened we had roughly 100 peo-ple, 70 walked in and said, ‘how can I help?’ ” The café is a free service and Brown stressed, “We are not providing care, we are providing support. We don’t bill for anything; we don’t have medical records. But we do have members.” Brown explained, “Being a member is free; members own things. We’re calling you a member because we want the people who come here to really feel like this is their place and we are giving them the authority to treat it like it is their place. We want the members to decide what a meeting room looks and feels like. We want them to ask questions during a financial literacy class — or any class provided. As a member, they can take ownership in the café. Membership also implies a commitment; you have fellow members you’re accountable to. “We are open to everyone. We literally had a person come in on a Saturday, asking if we had any food,” stated Brown. They do have food, (courtesy of local restaurants), the coffee is always hot and they can

recommend treatment centers for those in need. Recently the café held a sexual abuse group meeting and are looking to add more groups in the future. “We hope that they’ll find comfort and a support group they want to continue with.” Group meetings also consist of learning opportunities. Four County, a community mental health center, will be providing an insurance navigator for people who need treatment and a local bank will have a series on financial literacy. They want to offer adulting skills that will help people live a more stable life. On Wednesday nights they have a group for families with loved ones who are struggling. In May, a group of local yogis and a tai chi instructor called Karma Yoga will be donating their time each morning, five — six days a week. Their goal is to provide members a way to start their day with

intention and peace. They will learn how to meditate, to be reflective and purposeful and teach how breathing and thought can heal. “People ask a lot about volunteering and donating. And money’s nice because it pays the electric bill. But the thing we need, that we have to have for the community, is kindness. Active, aggressive, non-stop, relentless, unconditional kindness. We really need to put that in to practice.” He added, “Some of the nicest people I know have been in bad places — that does not make them bad people.” To stay up to date on the current schedule of for group meetings be sure to check their website at: www.recoverycafefultoncounty.org/ schedule.html. Recovery Café is open 3-7 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, 3-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Call (574) 223-2233 to learn more.
