What will my next topic be? I sat at my desk, my computer screen before me to compose my next newspaper article. I had the heading of any article on the computer screen, but nothing more. I wasn’t looking at the computer screen, however. I was looking out the window behind the screen, watching the birds flying about in the trees and bushes and to the bird feeder outside the window. The sky was blue and clear,
there wasn’t a cloud in sight. This was a day to be outside, not sitting inside at my desk. I’d been outside. The temperature was chilly, not cold, and there were many birds in the trees and bushes. There was a female red-winged blackbird on the feeder. A house wren landed on the feeder, beside the redwing, and another. The redwing flew but another redwing promptly took the place of the first. Then a purple finch and a black-capped chickadee landed on the feeder. I had just recently written about wrens. A pair had built a nest in the eave of the front porch of my home and their nestlings had now left the nest, become fledglings. The family had been in the yard when I was out earlier, two adult wrens and COUPON PLU PL #1099
three fledglings. A white-breasted nuthatch landed on the edge of the roof of the feeder, head down, then dropped to the feeder platform. An adult male cardinal flew in and the chickadee and nuthatch flew out, to a branch of a nearby tree. I could write about any of those birds. I could write about the weather, which was very pleasant when I’d been out earlier, but had been stormy days before. Recently, I wrote about stormy weather I’d seen, a tornado, hurricanes and typhoons. I could write about efforts to reduce the amount of CO2 being discharged into the air or about global warming. I could write about the cowbird that had landed on the bird feeder or the hummingbird I had seen on the hummingbird feeder outside the dining room window earlier as I ate breakfast.
Outdoor Notes, the title of my articles, is almost unlimiting. It includes all outdoors, anything outdoors, not just birds, but other animals, the three opossums I’d seen in the road a few days ago for example, a mother and two little ones, all dead. I’d stopped, got out of my car, and with tears in my eyes, moved them out of the road. It included the sandhill cranes that had nested in our pasture and the two little ones they’d had. It included the fawns I’d been seeing. It included plants, the early spring blossoms, the blossoms on the trees, now the summer flowers. So what was I going to write about today? What was my next topic going to be? I thought about birds named for people, but how many are there? I don’t know them, don’t remember them. That subject would require a lot of reading, a lot
of time, and I didn’t feel like spending that much time. Besides, I had a deadline, just two more days before I should mail the next article. I could write about the questions I’ve received from readers of my articles. Recently, I received a picture of a bird nest and a question, what species of bird made the nest. I didn’t know. I still don’t know, though I’ve tried to find a picture of it. There’s the picture of a hawk I received. The bird was flying. Was it a Cooper’s or a sharpshinned hawk, but the picture was not sharp. The tail wasn’t clear and I couldn’t tell whether it was a Cooper’s or a sharpie. Questions are welcome. They indicate readers. Without readers, newspaper editors would not publish my articles. So what should I write about this week that would interest readers?
