Christmas Bucks ZLQQHUV DQQRXQFHG %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Christmas cheer came a little early for some fortunate folks in Kosciusko County. The Christmas Bucks drawing has been held and the winners have been chosen.

The first place winner is Judy Tinkel of Warsaw and she won $800 at Creighton’s Crazy Egg Cafe and Coffee Bar in Warsaw. “It was such a surprise, a great Christmas present,” she exclaimed.

In fact, Tinkel would not have been in the Crazy Egg Cafe to submit her winning entry if she and her daughters had been able to find a craft bazaar near Clunette they were hoping to attend.

They never found the bazaar, but since

they were in the area, she recalled, “We thought we might as well go out and eat breakfast.” Tinkel is particularly fond of Crazy Egg’s biscuits and gravy.

Tinkel is unsure how she will spend her Christmas bucks; however, she was pleased to see two furniture stores, JB’s Furniture and Brouwer’s Carpet and Furniture, among the participating locations. “I need a new chair for the kitchen.”

Tinkel was one of several winners of this year’s Christmas Bucks promotion.

Christmas Bucks are redeemable the same as cash at the following locations: Warsaw, North Webster, Syracuse, Milford and Nappanee. The locations are printed on the back of each Christmas Buck.

The drawing was held Nov. 22 at The Papers Inc. in Milford. The drawing yielded 10 individual winners and one

merchant winner.

The other winners, besides Tinkel, were: • Second place, Bettina Rogers, $500, who submitted her entry at Neighborhood Fresh Market, North Webster.

• Third place, Brian Weideman, $150, who submitted his entry at The Cave on the Square, Syracuse.

• Fourth place, Di-Ana Sheetz, $150, who submitted her entry at Penguin Point, • Fifth place, Myra Steele, $150, who submitted her entry at Louie’s Bar and Grill, Syracuse.

• Sixth place, Joe Secrist, $50, who submitted his entry at H and L Motors, Warsaw.

• Seventh place, Delana Bradley, $50, who submitted her entry at Dental Solutions, Warsaw.

• Eighth place, Sherrie Plummer, $50, who submitted her entry at JB’s

Furniture, Warsaw.

• Ninth place, Dale Phillips, $50, who submitted his entry at The Spectacle Shoppe, Warsaw.

• Tenth place, Sharon Kaufman, $50, who submitted her entry at Monteith’s Best One Tire and Auto Care Center of Syracuse.

Each participating merchant drew a store winner and sent the entry to The Papers Inc., which sponsored the annual holiday promotion. The winners were drawn from the pool of submitted entries. The prizes totaled $2,000 for individual winners and another $1,000 in cash for the mer6HH PRUH chant winner. This year’s merchant winner was SKRWRV RI Dental Solutions, WarZLQQHUV RQ saw.

6SRUWV (GLWRU Jake Poyner has had championship aspirations since the day he stepped onto campus at Grace College. He’s putting that mindset into motion very quickly.

Poyner joined a quick-filling wall of champions at Grace as the latest coach to oversee a national championship squad, two in fact. Poyner’s men’s and women’s cross country teams were both champions at the NCCAA National Championships in November, the first titles of its kind for Grace cross country on either podium. Poyner, himself named the NCCAA Coach of the Year on both sides, saw the sudden success rewarding but also part of a bigger process for his two programs.

Poyner, speaking the week before the NAIA Nationals, referred to not taking away from his team’s focus of top finishes at the NAIAs in Washington state. Grace would wind up 15th in the women’s and 22nd in the men’s standings. It was just the third appearance at NAIA Nationals for the men and the first-ever trip for the women.

“We had fun, we celebrated that day,” noted Poyner of the championship moment. “It’s definitely cool to be part of the ‘first’ for cross country, knowing we did something this year with both teams no one had done before. We know we want to move up the NAIA ladder, though. We also know there’s work to do in the conference. We were third in the women and fourth in the men. We need some growth there. Maybe we can catch those top-ranked teams.”

Poyner was a standout runner for Warsaw Community High School, part of the most successful stretch of history for the boys cross country team.

The 2012 Tigers finished fourth at the IHSAA State Finals, its highest-ever finish, and Poyner was sixth overall at that state finals. He would later go on to run at Wake Forest University before transferring to Lipscomb University to finish his college career. Coming back to his hometown to coach in 2018 was a blessing, as being able to coach close to old friends and family has just enhanced the opportunity.

“The hard way is the right way,” noted Poyner. “It takes intentionality. With young adults, they need to find their way. With me, I had to find my fit, and I loved Wake to death, but a coaching change led to a culture change, and I didn’t feel like I fit. I keep that in mind here (at Grace). There’s school issues, classes, relationships, all the things they deal with.

“We just have to show we care. We came in and pushed the kids, some felt like it was too hard. But this is my recipe for being successful. We can’t let things slide, you have to own it. Being home is special to me, coming back to the community.

But I didn’t come back just to be here. I came here to help these kids reach their potential and learn to win on and off the course.”

At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, there will be a lecture about “Blessed Carlo Acutis.” The exhibit will close at 7 p.m. that day.

The exhibit will open at 9:30 a.m.

Sunday, Dec. 12, and close at 5:45 p.m.

The exhibit will be located in the Sacred Heart gym. Enter through door No. 5. Walk through of exhibit will take 20-40 minutes.

Then came the prize of the morning, a white-crowned sparrow. I see a white-crowned every year, but only now and then. This one landed in a bush near the feeders, flew down to the ground, then up to the platform feeder, then back to the ground. A whitecrowned sparrow is another occasional visitor, a “some-time” visitor. Another more northern nester and sometimes winter visitor is a red-breasted nuthatch.

Leaving the dining room, returning to my computer, I found another winter visitor, a darkeyed junco. It was on the platform feeder with a number of goldfinches. Dark-eyed juncos are not rare winter visitors. We see them every winter. But we don’t usually see juncos until snow covers the ground. In Iowa, when I was a boy, my school mates and I called juncos slate-colored juncos and snow birds.

I have one more bird feeder, a thistle seed feeder, outside a kitchen window. That feeder is visited daily, summer and winter, except when the weather is severe, by goldfinches and occasionally by a purple finch. Goldfinches also visit the other feeders around the house.

I’m a devoted feeder-bird watcher. I’m a devoted watcher of birds anywhere and any time. But at my desk, where my computer is, at the dining room table or in the kitchen, I’m frequently looking out a window. There I see my feeders birds.

Birds I see, other than those I’ve already named, are hairy woodpecker and red-bellied woodpecker.

In summer, I see song and chipping sparrows, red-winged blackbirds, grackles, cowbirds and house wrens. My older son has another woodpecker coming to his feeders, a pileated woodpecker, the biggest North American woodpecker. That’s a bird I would like to see at my feeders and do see occasionally in wooded areas when I go wandering.

Other birds I see regularly when I go wandering, walking or driving, are crows, turkey vultures, red-tailed, warblers, Cooper’s and sharp-shinned hawks and kestrel, wild turkey, ducks and geese, gulls and terns, shore birds, herons and all the other waders.

If it has feathers, I want to see it, and maybe write about it.

T h e r e OUTDOOR were no NOTES birds on the bird feeder outside the window beyond my computer when I sat down to start writing this morning. But it was early.

By Neil Case The sky was just getting light. Six house sparrows flew in and landed on the feeder shortly after I sat down. A goldfinch joined the sparrows, then a tufted titmouse.

I hadn’t started my next article.

I was just deciding on a subject.

I could write about house sparrow, goldfinch or tufted titmouse, but I have written about each of those, some recently, some more than once. I was hoping for a bird I hadn’t seen recently, or better yet, one I hadn’t seen at one of my feeders, or at all.

Six more goldfinches landed on the feeder and another tufted titmouse. I decided to take a break, left my computer, went to the kitchen and got my lunch. I didn’t return to my computer then, but sat down at the dining room table.

Outside a large window by the dining room table are several bird feeders, a roofed platform feeder, an unshelled peanut feeder and two suet feeders. There were house sparrows on the platform feeder when I sat down. A blackcapped chickadee and two whitebreasted nuthatches landed on the platform feeder with the sparrows, then a tufted titmouse, a cardinal and five blue jays. Two more tufted titmice landed on the peanut feeder. A downy woodpecker landed on one of the suet feeders. A hairy is another that visits my feeders and a red-bel-

INDOT reminds public to reinforce mailboxes Indiana Department of Transportation is urging residents along state roads and U.S. highways to prepare their mailboxes prior to the start of winter weather.

Snow and ice removal is INDOT’s top priority during winter months. While the agency’s yellow plow trucks generally travel slower than the posted speed limit and drivers are careful to avoid mailboxes, the weight of snow thrown from plows can cause damage to mailboxes that are not properly secured or have weak supports.

Property owners are responsible for installing and maintaining mailboxes on state right of way. To mitigate possible damage, INDOT recommends placing a mailbox as far from the edge of the roadway as a mail carrier can reach.

Clearing snow from the access area near a mailbox can ensure safer delivery of mail and reduce the amount of snow coming off a plow.

Streets will be lit up Dec. 11 in Leesburg

If you enjoy looking at lights this time of the year, you probably won’t be disappointed to see streets in Leesburg lit up during the annual Candelaria event.

Leesburg Mighty Farmers 4-H Club and the Leesburg Boy Scout Troop will begin lighting the luminarias at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in order to have them lit at dusk. All the main streets of the town will be lit, subject to the weather, and approximately 1,300 to 1,500 candle-lit luminaries will be used, said Christina Archer, one of the organizers of the event.

Santa Claus will make his grand entrance at 6 p.m. at the old fire station next to Town Hall on Pearl Street downtown. Children will get a chance to visit with Santa and tell him what they would like for Christmas.

Cookies, hot chocolate and coffee will be served free of charge from 6 to 8 p.m.

“The luminarias stay lit until midnight when the weather is not too windy, so we hope lots of people will drive around the town and stop by to visit with their friends and neighbors at the firehouse,” Archer noted.

Debra Collier’s faculty, students attend convention Faculty and students from Debra Collier’s School of Dance, Warsaw, recently attended the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters Workshop, held in Oak Brook, Ill. Studio owner and CNADM Past President Debra Collier, MDE, six faculty members, and students ranging from novice to advanced attended the two-day event to improve their skills in ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary and modern dance. The attendees received instruction from a faculty of renowned dance professionals.

“As dance educators, we take seriously our responsibility for the proper development of each of our students. Attending CNADM allows us to learn the newest teaching techniques, theories, and choreography,” said Collier. “CNADM also provides wonderful opportunities, such as the college and career fair.”

“Each season CNADM has offered the college and career fair, we have had DCSD students receive multiple invitations to join various college dance programs. It is a wonderful opportunity for dancers to audition for dozens of schools at the same time,” explained Tammy Seibold, MDE. “Each faculty member was available to discuss their various programs and what their college had to offer. I really appreciated the opportunity to hear about the various aspects of their campuses, academic opportunities and career paths. It gave me knowledge to help our graduating dancers as they make important decisions.”

Solar panel business expansion recommended for approval %\ 7,0 $6+/(< $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Business is booming for Solar Energy Systems LLC near Nappanee and warehouse storage space is needed to store inventory. During the regular monthly meeting of the Kosciusko County Area Planning Commission Wednesday, Dec. 1, in Warsaw a petition was presented requesting a new warehouse to be built.

Solar Energy Systems is located just south of the city limits of Nappanee at the intersection of CR 1350N and SR 19. The property was originally rezoned in 2016 with a set of restrictive covenants attached. The covenants were modified with four new ones added in 2019.

Steve Snyder, attorney representing Solar Energy Systems, said the business has grown considerably after starting small and more storage space is needed. The proposed warehouse building will be 80 feet by 200 feet in size and located immediately west of the existing building. All access with the exception of farming operations will be off CR 1350N.

In order for the expansion to take place, the restrictive covenants will need to be modified again.

Mike Kissinger of the APC said he would like to see the drainage infrastructure in place before any building permit is issued, which was agreed to by the petitioner. The APC recommended approval of the petition which will now be considered by the county commissioners Dec. 7.

Also on the agenda, the APC recommended approval of a rezoning for Elkhart County Gravel on 11.3 acres on the west side of CR 200W at the intersection with CR 300N in Prairie Township. Only a portion of the 11.3 acres will actually be rezoned.

Elkhart County Gravel wants a permanent asphalt mixing plant on the property. A temporary one is operating under the approval of the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals.

Snyder said Brooks Construction would lease the plant from Elkhart County Gravel. There is a large mineral extracting operation nearby as well as a concrete plant.

It’s celebrated on Rosa Park’s birthday — which is Feb. 4, and Dec. 1, the day she was arrested.

On Dec. 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Montgomery, Ala. Instead of going to the back of the bus, which was designated for African-Americans, she sat in the front. When the bus started to fill up with white passengers, the bus driver asked Parks to move. She refused. Her resistance set in motion one of the largest social movements in history: the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Parks’ courageous act and the subsequent Montgomery Bus Boycott led to the integration of public transportation in Montgomery. Her actions were not without consequences, however.

She was jailed and lost her job for participating in the boycott.

She spent many years being an invaluable asset in Detroit’s Civil Rights Movement. In 1999, Parks was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor the United States bestows on a civilian. When she died at age 92 on Oct. 24, 2005, she became the first woman in the nation’s history to lie in honor at the U.S. Capitol.

The best way for people to celebrate Rosa Parks Day is to make a difference in the civil rights movement. This could mean protesting for just causes, lobbying a politician for issues that affect people of color or even helping marginalized communities get organized and registered to vote.

People can also spend this day learning more about Parks and the civil rights movement.

They can do this by reading books that cover the subject

Angelia Shaw to rezone property from agricultural to agricultural II on the south side of CR 300N, west of CR 350W in Prairie Township. Sell-offs for the property have been exhausted and she wants a two-lot subdivision.

The county BZA recently granted a variance to her for setbacks on the property to be 25 feet instead of the 50 feet required by ordinance.

Shaw said she wants to split the property and her children may want to build on it or live on the property.

She said she also has deeded access to the property from off CR 350N, but the county highway department questioned the

two access points when the technical committee met earlier to review the petition.

A remonstrator said he is concerned about the potential of increased traffic and wants Shaw to use her own driveway. The county commissioners will consider the petition at their Dec. 7 meeting.

In other business Matt Sandy, assistant planning director, gave a brief update on the Forward Kosciusko County comprehensive plan. He said after public input plans will likely start rolling out in February 2022.

MudLOVE announces the return of a retail shopping experience in Winona Lake.

The new retail space is located in the spot where MudLOVE originally opened in 2009, in a garage behind the Village Barber in the Village at Winona. This retail space will feature classic MudLOVE products such as bracelets and mugs. It will also include several lines of exclusive and limited edition products such as new mug styles, apparel and the return of the sale cart.

Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts announces auditions The Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts announces auditions for youth and teens for its upcoming Wagon Wheel Junior Winter Musical; the title to be announced after auditions.

They will be at 10 a.m. for ages 9-11 and 11:30 a.m. for ages 1218. They will be at Wagon Wheel Theatre, 2515 E. Center St. in the

Rehearsals are Jan. 20 and Feb. 3. Rehearsals will be held every weekday after school (typically from 5-8:30 p.m.) and all day on weekends.

Joe’s Kids is a nonprofit pediatric rehabilitation clinic that provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services for children with special needs or developmental delays. OBITUARIES Beverley J. Blue Beverley J. “Bev” Blue, 76, Columbia City, formerly of Leesburg, died at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 26, 2021.

She was born July 26, 1945. On May 1, 1982, she married Robert Lewis “Bob” Blue. He preceded her in death July 14, 2005.

Surviving are daughters, Melissa Blue, Winona Lake, Barb Tethrake, Warsaw, and Rachael Blue, Syracuse; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a special grandson.

Cremation took place at Cremation Services of Kosciusko County, Warsaw.

Memorial services were held Dec. 4 at Owen Family Funeral Home, North Webster. Burial was in Oswego Cemetery.

Carole Geneal Butts Carole Geneal (Clinker) Butts, 91, Warsaw, died at 6:30 a.m. Nov. 27, 2021.

She was born Aug. 28, 1930. On March 14, 1952, she married Buddy Gene Butts; he survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Nancy Corl, Warsaw, and Peggy Bell, Fishers; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Judy Haney, Beaver Dam. Services were held Dec. 5 at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Guy Douglas Cox Guy Douglas Cox, 55, Fort Wayne, formerly of Syracuse, died Nov. 24, 2021.

He was born Dec. 30, 1965.

He is survived by a son, Caleb; sisters, Joan Routsong, McAllen, Texas, and Kathy Irwin, Columbus City; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held Dec. 1 at Syracuse Cemetery. Military honors were rendered by Syracuse American Legion Post 223. Yeager Funeral Home, Ligonier, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born Aug. 5, 1959.

%\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 *XHVW :ULWHU We are going to learn about the last famous artist we will include in our studies this week. Did you realize we have provided 40 of these in-depth discussions of the most famous artists in the world?

This week, we will find out about the amazing artist Paul Cézanne.

Unlike most professional artists, Cezanne was born into a wealthy family. He didn’t have the financial struggles of many of the “starving artists” we have read about. His father was a banker, who also formed a very successful company with some partners, so Cézanne seldom had to worry about funds or income from his art.

Born Jan. 19, 1839, Cezanne was fortunate to have a comfortable home to welcome him and his two younger sisters in Aix-En-Provence commune. He would spend many hours always returning to the home he loved in between trips and excursions on behalf of his art.

In his youth, Cezanne attended something we would call elementary school, then he was enrolled in the College Bourbon in Aix. Here he became lifelong friends with two other youth attending the school.

The group called themselves “Les Trois inseparables,” or the three inseparables. In 1857, he began studying drawing under a Spanish Monk at the Municipal School of Drawing. His father was not in favor of an art career and persuaded his son to attend law school, but he also allowed him to continue his drawing lessons on the side as an encouragement.

Finally, his art would not be denied and, going against his father’s wishes, he left Aix-and a law career.

His destination: Paris, where one of his “inseparables” Emile Zola resided. His father eventually and reluctantly made amends with his

son and provided adequate funds for him to live well.

The next incident that impacted Cézanne’s life was his introduction to the impressionist artist, Camille Pissarro. At first their friendship was that of master and pupil in which the student began picking up and learning much more than he had previously experienced in how to create good art. It was not long before the two were taking trips to do landscape paintings of the beautiful scenery they found. Soon, the work became equally good between them and their relationship developed into a long-term friendship between equally talented artists.

While Pissarro was a dedicated impressionistic artist, Cézanne began to drift away from this type of art.

After two years of working together, Cezanne began to study light, color and tonal inflections more deeply.

He once said he wanted his work to be “theory developed in contact with nature.”

Walleye stocked in northern Indiana lakes Almost 43,000 fall fingerling walleyes were stocked at eight locations in northern Indiana in early October. An additional 26,738 fall fingerlings were stocked at five more locations in late October to mid-November.

The fish stocked in the second round were grown at Fawn River State Fish Hatchery to supplement the earlier stockings that were purchased from a private commercial fish supplier. The stocked walleye are primarily 5to-7-inch fingerlings. A few fish are larger. They will typically reach 14 inches after two years of growth and 16 inches by age 3.

The target stocking rate for these larger fall walleye fingerlings is 10 fish per acre, a figure DNR fisheries biologists say provides the best balance for fishing potential, growth and fisheries balance.

Lakes that are stocked include Winona Lake in Kosciusko County. Other lakes are: Bass Lake (Starke) Crooked Lake (Steuben) Clear Lake (Steuben) George (Steuben)

Pine/Stone Lakes (LaPorte) Pretty Lake (LaGrange) St. Joseph River (St. Joseph) Sylvan Lake (Noble) Shriner Lake (Whitley) Wall Lake (LaGrange) Wolf Lake (Lake) Most of these locations are stocked with fall fingerlings each year to sustain the walleye population. A few locations are stocked on alternate years to improve walleye fishing in additional areas. The lakes are continually evaluated by biologists for fish survival and angling use.

Multiple other lakes are stocked with walleyes by privately-funded lake associations. A stocking permit that is evaluated and approved by the local DNR fisheries biologist is needed before any stocking can take place.

The young fish are often found in vegetation or large rocky habitat. Anglers should handle young walleye they catch gently because they are the future of the fishery.

Department of Health partners with Purdue University Indiana Department of Health has partnered with Purdue University on a new initiative that aims to ensure Hoosiers have better access to the resources they need to improve their health.

The two-year Indiana Healthy Opportunities for People Everywhere initiative will deploy teams across the state to facilitate community-level conversations, resulting in strategies to address the factors that prevent people from living their healthiest lives. The work will examine longstanding risk factors, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Hoosiers’ health.

The effort is being funded by a $34.8 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Chronic disease, food insecurity, opioids, obesity and smoking were challenges for Indiana before the pandemic, and the last two years of isolation and treatment delays have only made them worse,” said State Health Commissioner Kris Box, M.D., FACOG. “As we amplify pandemic recovery efforts, it’s more important than ever to understand and respond to the factors that make it difficult for people to get healthy and stay healthy, such as limited access to healthcare, affordable housing, transportation, childcare, and safe and secure

employment. I-HOPE will help us do that.”

During the two-year project, the teams deployed by Purdue Healthcare Advisors at the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering will collaborate with I-HOPE partners working on projects statewide, as well as with 30 Indiana counties that have been most impacted by the pandemic. The I-HOPE initiative is independent of, but will complement, the work of the Governor’s Public Health Commission, established in August to examine Indiana’s public health infrastructure.

The 15-member commission is charged with analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of Indiana’s current public health system and identifying ways to improve funding and equitable delivery of public health services in the future, with a focus on legislation.

Donations to Salvation Army kettles doubled thanks to matching gift Red Kettles are popping up all across Kosciusko County.The Salvation Army’s annual Christmas fundraising campaign will be getting a welcome boost on one of the biggest shopping days of the year.

On Nov. 27, also known as “Small Business Saturday,” cash donations dropped into Red Kettles across the county will be doubled thanks to a generous $2,500 matching gift from New Life Christian Church and World Outreach.

This match will be used to encourage holiday shoppers to give a little more and make a big impact in the lives of their neighbors in need.

The Salvation Army has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of Kosciusko County residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to financial and food assistance, a “prayer alley” was established to help with the emotional and spiritual care of the community. Recently, staff has seen a rise in the need for financial assistance with rent and mortgage payments as the effects of the pandemic and shut-downs continue to plague local residents.

in November and December will help to ensure that The Salvation Army can continue to meet these increased needs, while providing regular programming and services to the community.

“We appreciate the kettle matches in Kosciusko County,” said Envoy Ken Locke of The Salvation Army Warsaw Corps. “People are excited to give funds to ring in the holidays, joining this challenge from New Life Christian Church.”

One out of every three students on ICI campuses is firstgeneration. Generous financial aid provided by ICI institutions, combined with state and federal grants, makes a private college education a possibility for all Hoosier students, including Jones.

Jones was first introduced to Grace College when her admissions counselor, Keianna Yoder, came to her high school and encouraged her to apply. After taking Yoder’s advice, Jones visited Grace for the first time and everything clicked for her.

“On that visit, I fell in love with the school and the community,” said Jones. “I chose Grace because I knew I could be my true self and leave my footprint here.”

Jones is double majoring in elementary education and special education with a minor in youth ministry. After a year and a half on campus, Jones has already gotten involved as a student mentor to help freshman students adjust to college and serves as the coordinator of the Black Student Association.

When Jones found out she was awarded the Realizing the Dream Scholarship, she was in complete shock.

“I did not believe it to be true, so I had to re-read the email a couple of times,” said Jones. “I prayed about it and went to tell my mom and dad the good news.”

Jones chose Alicia Harvey, current principal at The PATH School, Indianapolis, as her “most influential educator.”

“I met Mrs. Harvey when she was the principal at Arsenal Technical High School. She has been a huge part of my educational life ever since,” said Jones.

“She has been a mentor to me since I was in sixth-grade, not only supporting me in my educational dreams but all of my siblings and my parents as well.”

Looking forward, Jones hopes to use her degrees to work closely with children both in educational and spiritual ways. Until she graduates, Jones plans on continuing to maximize her college experience in honor of those who have supported her on her journey.

“A huge thanks are due to the faculty and staff here at Grace

that have impacted me since I arrived. I’m so thankful for everyone, who has helped me in my educational journey and has been there every step of the way.”

Annual Toy Time begins Dec. 13 this year It’s time to empty toy boxes and bookshelves and let those toys and books bring joy to someone else.

The annual Toy Time is scheduled to take place in the Home & Family Arts building at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds beginning Dec. 13.

Event organizer Ami Pitt partners with Toys for Tots and American Bikers Aimed Toward Education to raise funds to purchase new

toys for the annual Combined Community Services toy giveaway.

“It’s three separate entities working together. We are so grateful to be working alongside ABATE Treasures for Kids and Toys for Tots to help provide gifts to the families of our 1,500 plus Kosciusko County kids,” Pitt said.

Used toys and children’s items may be brought to the Home and Family Arts Building at the fair-

grounds, located at 1400 E. Smith St., Warsaw, between 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 13-16.

Volunteers will price the items and put them up for sale.

Those who bring in items for consignment will receive 50 percent from any of their items sold at the public sale. The other 50 percent will go toward the purchase of new toys to help families who are struggling to buy Christ-

mas gifts this year.

As always, a person may donate his/her share of the proceeds. Items that aren’t sold will be re-homed as Christmas gifts.

Donations of Bibles are also appreciated.

The toy sale will be held 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 18, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dec. 19. CCS toy giveaway will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 21, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 22.

Farmers encouraged to keep the stubble this fall The Natural Resources Conservation Service is encouraging Indiana farmers to keep the tillage equipment in the machine shed during No-Till November and beyond.

The NRCS campaign encourages farmers to “keep the stubble” on their harvested crops fields. The campaign has reached about two million people nationally through Twitter and local media since its inception in 2017.

“No-till farming is a cornerstone soil health conservation practice, which also promotes water quality while saving farmers time and money. It is also a key climate smart practice, that helps store more carbon in the soil,” said Kosciusko County NRCS District Conservationist Chad Schotter. “One of the first soil health principles is ‘do not disturb.’

This campaign is a fun way to remind farmers about the important relationship between tillage and soil health.”

Improving soil health increases soil biological activity, which provides erosion control, nutrient benefits and can simulate tillage.

Why No-Till?

• Farmers are encouraged to keep the stubble and give their farm a more rugged,

natural look.

• Leave the tillage equipment parked in the shed this fall. Consider the benefits of no-till, which is a way of growing crops or pasture from year to year with minimal soil disturbance.

• Soil is like the skin of the farm: it’s a nourishing barrier for what grows above and beneath. But whereas a shaving razor stops at the surface of the skin, tillage rips into the soil and can inflict harm.

• No-till improves soil health by not disturbing soil microbiology. Beneficial soil microbes are essential for growing food, fiber and fuel.

• Repeated tillage undermines soil structure and reduces aggregate stability; it breaks down organic matter and releases carbon stored in the soil.

• No-till is a key climate-smart farming practice, helping healthy soil store more carbon sequestered from the atmosphere to mitigate climate change.

• No-till improves the soil’s water holding capacity and keeps soils in place, preventing harmful runoff and erosion.

• Still not convinced to #keepthestubble? No-till saves time, money (fuel) and wear on equipment. It’s an economicallysound choice.

My name is Kevin Burnett, and I am the new civil engineering technician for USDANRCS in the Warsaw field office. I grew up in the small town of Tallassee, Ala., and I have lived in rural areas for most of my life.

I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in biosystems engineering (agricultural/environmental) in the spring of 2021. I have a background in horticulture (greenhouse and landscaping), engineering and extension through the university.

I moved to Indiana to gain a better understanding of how to design erosion preventative measures that are not in the Southeastern region of the United States, and to experience other challenges I have not seen yet. It is my mission to help farmers preserve or enhance as much of their land as possible.

SWCD-sponsored Master Naturalist Program graduates 2021 Kosciusko class Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District sponsored its sixth Kosciusko Indiana Master Naturalists program, which recently graduated its 2021 class, according to Darci Zolman, SWCD program administrator. Of the 19 participants, 15 completed the required hours of classroom/ field work and completed the program’s final review.

Nine members also fulfilled the mandatory 24 hours of volunteer service in the

community, becoming certified Indiana Master Naturalists.

“The program has been such a great success,” commented Zolman. “With the uncertainties of continued COVID restrictions, this class complied with our safety protocols and stuck with it to complete the course. In addition to meeting some amazing people and learning more about our county’s natural resources and natural places, the community has received nearly 300 hours of vol-

2022 Tree Sale Program soon underway Winter is knocking at the door, but it is not too soon to be planning for spring, especially ordering trees from the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District . Order forms for 2022 will be available in January, containing a variety of tree seedling species at a reasonable price, to make tree planting a convenient and affordable opportunity.

The tree order form can be found on

After the first of the year, order forms can be picked up from several local merchants that display the SWCD tree sales poster. KWWIP looking to expand membership What is KWWIP? Kosciusko Water and Woodland Invasive Partnership exists to build community support to protect the land and water in Kosciusko County from nonnative invasive species.

KWWIP is made up of a team of dedicated volunteer board and committee members.

The group is currently looking to expand its membership and offers four committee options. These committees include: Terrestrial Committee — Focused on identifying and eradicating land-based, nonnative invasive plants. Also seeking committee chair.

Aquatic Committee — Focused on iden-

Natural Christmas trees — A conservation crop

Artificial or real?

This is a question many ask as the Christmas season approaches. Do I go with the convenience of an artificial tree or the tradition of a real one?

Artificial trees have some appeal, as they are relatively easy to handle, symmetrical, reusable and virtually maintenance-free.

They do, however, come with an environmental price tag. They are often made from materials, such as polyvinyl chloride and metal, which over time begin to break &+99@Ā&853.+@; down. Some of these trees begin to release by-products, such as lead, which have %:86Ā@8=: proven health risks. Mulch — Branches can be used like mulch to protect plants through the winter.

Birds — Move the used tree outdoors in its stand or leaning against a fence, where it can provide food (hang bird treats or suet from the branches) and shelter for wild birds. Put the tree near a bird feeder to provide valuable cover against wintery temperatures and protection while eating.

Compost — Christmas trees can be ground into wood chips and/or composted.

Plan ahead — Think balled and burlapped when you purchase next year’s tree. You will be able to plant the tree after the holidays and enjoy it for years to come.

Consider a real Christmas tree this season. Not only will you enjoy its natural beauty, but you will also be making a good choice for conservation.

Knowledge empowers us to make informed decisions for a positive impact on the things we value most. That is why The Watershed Foundation was honored to host Smithsonian Water Ways with the North Webster Public Library this past summer. Kosciusko County SWCD was pleased to be a supporter of this project.

The exhibit and programs drew more than 1,600 visitors. The experience increased awareness about the value of our rich water resources and sparked conversations about good stewardship in our community. This prompted attendees to reflect on their own relationship and responsibilities to water.

Land of Lakes, a vibrant local traveling exhibit, was created and launched

to showcase our local community’s water story. It was developed with financial support from over 20 local businesses and organizations, in cooperation with members of the Clean Waters Partnership education committee: the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation, Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams and the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation.

This fascinating and beautiful display will continue to be shared with our community for years to come. It is currently on display at the Warsaw Community Public Library through the end of the year.
