Mobile Meals driver delivers more than just food

By PHOEBE MUTHART Staff Writer Mary Hartle is not your average “retiree.” She delivers Mobile Meals in Kosciusko County several times a week and volunteers for other area agencies, too.

A Warsaw resident, she grew up on a farm in Kosciusko County. “ I was a farm girl,” she said.

She graduated from Bourbon High School in 1958. After high school, she got married at 17.

Hartle and her husband, Lee, had two children, both sons. Their oldest son, Sam, died three years ago.

She got a job as a waitress at Cozy Cottage in downtown Warsaw. She worked there from 1962 to 1965, working the 5-8 p.m. shift.

“I was always busy,” she recalled.

After working at the restaurant, she got a job at Dalton, where she worked for eight years.

She worked in accounting and then data processing.

“I always liked bookkeeping,” she said.

After Dalton, she got a job at Sun Metal, where she worked for 34 years. She retired in April 2006. After retiring, she started delivering Mobile Meals.

“I’ve always been a busy person,” she said.

Hartle said she enjoys helping others and delivering meals to homebound senior citizens is one way to do so.

“The people are so nice,” she said.

Hartle said helping others helps her too.

“It is good feeling,” she said.

“I am helping them but they are helping me too.”

She delivers meals every Tuesday and Thursday. The meals are picked up at Lutheran Kosciusko Hospital, and then she delivers them to the people’s homes. Every week it is the same route, she said.

“At first, I delivered every day, she recalled. “And I’ve run every route.”

Sometimes, she fills in for other drivers or she will deliver on Mondays and some Fridays.

Once in awhile, she fill run the “express route,” which is to North Webster where a driver picks up meals at the community center to deliver to homes in that town.

“On the way, we deliver to seven homes,” she said, including three homes in the Pierceton area. Her husband sometimes helps drive while she delivers the meals.

Hartle delivers more than just a hot meal. She also does a welfare check making sure clients are well.

She has also volunteered at the Salvation Army’s food pantry in Warsaw.

“I like it there,” Hartle said.

She has attended First United Methodist Church in Warsaw for over 25 years.

She has also helped with the church’s food pantry and served on the missionary society and The Circle, in which she was president for 12 years.

“I also did funeral dinners,”

she said.

For 20 years, she was on the board of the Tiger Boosters at WCHS. She also has hobbies, such as golf, and at one time had horses.

The couple have attended WCHS boys and girls basketball games since 1965, both at home and away games.

“We have gone to every game except three,” Hartle related.

“Now we just go to home games.”

She also keeps track of Bourbon school alumni, surviving as well as those who are deceased, and serves as an officer. Once a month, she gets together with other alumni.

Help Milford Food Bank ‘Gobble Up Hunger’

By KEITH KNEPP Staff Writer Milford Food Bank will hold its third annual “Gobble Up Hunger” fundraiser with several events to be held Saturday, Nov. 4. All proceeds will support the work of Milford Food Bank. The pro-

grams will take place at Milford Elementary School, 611 E. Emeline St. The fun begins with a 2, 1 and 1/2 mile run/walk. Registration begins at 3 p.m. with the two longer events starting at 4 p.m. and the 1/2 mile race at 4:30 p.m.

Awards will follow for age divi-

sions and overall winners.

After the race, a haystack supper provided by Milford community churches will be served from 4:30-7 p.m. A freewill donation will be accepted for the meal.

A silent auction will be available from 4:30-6 p.m. featuring an assortment of baked goods.

You can bid as you enter the dinner or while you browse the live auction items that will fall under the hammer beginning at 6:30 p.m. Raise your paddle on a variety of items donated by local businesses and community members.

They actually celebrated the milestone earlier this year in July with a 16-day river cruise on the Viking Mississippi, cruising from St. Paul, Minn., to New Orleans.

The Randolphs have four children, nine grandchildren, one greatgrandchild and a second great-grandchild due to arrive in mid-January.

Warsaw First Brethren Church will be holding its 18th annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 4.

The bazaar will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the church, 1318 E. Center St., Warsaw.

Between 25 and 30 vendors will be on hand. Expect to find plenty of gift ideas, a bake sale and door prizes. Free gifts are planned for little ones, and lunch also will be available.

Among items for shoppers to discover will be the themed gift baskets the bazaar has become known for; jarred soups; honey; dips; jewelry; handmade wooden bowls and other items; aprons; holiday decor; candles; tumblers; ornaments; and dish towels.

“I can take care of that,” Siefken replied; you can see him in the back row of the photo wearing the cowboy hat.

The committee which put the reunion together included: Jim Breading, Gaylord Johnston, Laura Rogers Bixel, Nanette Pratt Newland, and Bill and Carol Sayler Huffer.

Warsaw First Brethren plans 18th annual Holiday Bazaar

The group enjoyed a homecooked dinner prepared by the Eastern Star women members.

Following the dinner, a memorial time was shared for the 51 classmates who have died.

A display with the graduation photo of each deceased member was available, and the photos stirred many memories of those high school years. Classmate John Davis had purchased a gift of “What Happened in 1958” in the form of a deck of cards, which was to be given away at the reunion by him.

Davis passed away in 2022, so it was decided to give the card deck away based on questions and answers about his life following graduation, such as his racing at the old Warsaw Speedway and his job as a mail carrier for many years.

Two evenings were planned to be able to visit and share all that has happened from 1958 to today.

On Friday, attendees gathered at the Comfort Inn conference room, shared an assortment of light foods, and had a fun time meeting and visiting.

Saturday’s time was held at the Masonic Temple Lodge. At this get-together, lots of photos and class memorabilia were displayed and enjoyed. “Oh, my gosh, I remember that” and “I had forgotten about this” were phrases that were heard a lot.

Kosciusko County middle school students will have the opportunity to compete in the National Civics Bee for the first time during the 2023-2024 school year.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, organizer of the National Civics Bee, has named the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce as an official partner to host a Kosciusko County competition in 2024.

The National Civics Bee is a competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. The opportunity extends to students in grades six, seven and eight, granting them a unique platform to demonstrate their civics knowledge.

Students can enter the competition by submitting an essay online beginning Monday, Nov. 13.

For educators, the program offers resources, including a teacher guide, to introduce the

opportunity to their students.

Resources are available through the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and local participating chambers.

Participants in the National Civics Bee will have the chance to gain recognition for their civics knowledge and skills, and compete for prizes, including a $1,000 cash prize for the state champion. The competition enables students to explore issues that matter to their communities, furthering their understanding of civic engagement and fostering responsible citizenship.

This year, the National Civics Bee is expanding its reach to students in 28 states, with plans for a national competition scheduled for 2024. A three-year, $4.5 million grant from the Daniels Fund will allow the U.S. Chamber Foundation to scale these opportunities to all 50 states by 2026.

“In these challenging times, fostering a deep understanding of civics and government among our young students is of utmost importance. The National Civics Bee provides a unique platform for them to not only showcase their knowledge but also become active and engaged citizens of the future,” said Hilary Crow, vice president of civics at the U.S. Chamber Foundation.

“The Kosciusko Chamber is proud to have been selected as a partner for the National Civics Bee,” said Rob Parker, Kosciusko Chamber president and chief executive officer. “We believe that a democracy is strongest when its citizens are most informed, and we are proud to be able to bring awareness and knowledge by offering a Civics Bee in our community.”

By LAUREN ZEUGNER Editor For months now, high school students throughout Kosciusko County have been busy learning lines, creating sets and rehearsing scenes as they prepare their fall productions.

Warsaw Community High School students will be performing “My Heart Says Go,” written

by Matthew Hawkins, founder and creative producer of the University of Notre Dame’s New Works Lab, and Notre Dame alum Jorge “Jay” Rivera-Herrans.

WCHS is the first high school to perform the musical.

Melanie Morris, theater teacher, who is directing, saw the musical performed by the South Bend Civic Theater last spring.

“The production I saw, I was blown away,” she said.

The musical tells the story of Indigo, who realizes a career in medicine isn’t for him. He decides to pursue his dream for music, which creates conflict with his father.

“It handles some heavy topics in a sensitive and appropriate way for our students and community,” Morris said.

The message of the musical is about following your heart and how strong parental love is.

Hawkins has even dropped by to see a rehearsal and offer some pointers to the cast.

“They were very, very nervous.

I was nervous. As a director, you never (get the chance to) meet the playwrite,” Morris said.

“Hawkins and Rivera-Herrans wanted high schools to perform the play,” Morris said. “They want to make theater accessible. Their idea is to skip Broadway and get to the community level.”

The cast of “My Heart Says Go” is made up of 20 students with a crew of 10. Morris said she kept the cast small due to the content of the show. She wanted the student actors to dig deep into their characters.

“With a large cast, that’s hard to do,” she explained.

She feels the kids involved in

the musical have really matured and delved deeper into their characters.

Opening night is 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3. Performances are 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5.

Wawasee High School is rehearsing “The Play That Goes Wrong,” which is a comedy about a play within a play.

A cast of eight, civic theater actors are putting on a play, while everything around them goes wrong.

“It’s a murder mystery, and they’re trying to solve a murder and be serious about it, while everything around them falls apart,” explained WHS teacher Kristin Bonner, who is directing the play with Sarah LeCount.

Bonner saw the play in New York City.

“I had never laughed so hard,” she said.

She knew she wanted to bring the play to Wawasee, but wasn’t sure she could because the entire set literally falls apart and has to go back together.

“It’s a structural marvel,” she said, giving credit to physics teacher Dan Wray, who had help from Jim Cox, a friend of his.

“Even if you’re not a theater fan, it’s so funny because stuff keeps happening,” Bonner said. “It’s like every director’s nightmare.”

The basis of the play is a civic theater group is putting on a whodunit, while things go haywire with the props and the set. Along with the actors, members of the “stage crew” are also visible to the audience throughout the play.

The play has a cast of eight, a false crew of seven (those visible on stage) and an actual stage crew of eight students. Of the 23 students involved, Bonner noted 12 are seniors.

An added challenge is during rehearsals, Bonner suffered a stroke and LeCount had to take over directing until she could come back to work. Bonner said it was

While there is a high school adaption for “The Play That Goes Wrong,” Bonner elected to go with an adult version for the comedy.

Due to the amount of stage direction involved, she said the cast is exhausted by the end of the play.

Opening night is 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, with performances at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 and 2 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 12.

Grace Village jam sessions still going strong Twenty years ago, Dr. John Davis asked the Grace Village Retirement Community if he, his brother, Robert, and George and Waunita Young could move their weekly musical jam sessions to the dining room.

In the beginning, it was simply a place for a few musicians to meet and share their music with each other. But as time passed, more and more residents, their family and friends, and members of the community were welcomed to attend.

That was the beginning of the weekly program known as Thursday Night Jam. As the years progressed, requests were made by residents moving to other levels of care at Grace Village to have jam sessions in their area as well. So individual artists and small music groups splintered off from the main Thursday night ensemble to serve those requests at other times.

TVHS Thepsians taking audience to Narnia This year’s fall production for Tippecanoe Valley High School will be the “Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” adapted for the stage from the book by C.S. Lewis.

The story tells of four children sent to their uncle’s mansion to escape the Anschluss taking place in Europe during World War II. Lucy, played by Gabby Harter, the youngest child, finds a wardrobe in one of the rooms; when she goes to hide in it, she finds herself transported to the land of Narnia, where she meets Tumnus, played by Hailee Norman, a nice nefarious faun that works for the White Witch, played by Jordan Strayer.

Tumnus is charged with capturing humans, who come to Narnia to prevent the witch from los-

ing her powers if all four children sit on the throne of Cair Paravel.

The production has 22 cast members on stage, along with four stage crew members, referred to as “wood nymphs,” who are moving sets around.

“So, in a way they’re acting too,” said Thomas Boys, director of vocal music and theater arts at Tippecanoe High-Middle School.

The production also has six members of the high school’s technical theater class running the sound and special effects, lights, organizing the stage crew duties, and costuming the entire event.

“I selected this play because of its continued popularity with middle and high school-age students, many of whom have enjoyed reading the Narnia series of books, of which this story is

Open Door celebrating 51 years of serving Wa-Nee community

By KEITH KNEPP Staff Writer This year marks the 51st year of Open Door serving the Nappanee and Wakarusa communities.

It began in 1972 in the basement of the since-demolished building which housed Nappanee United Methodist Church.

“It started with a group of community leaders as more like a community assist, taking people to doctor’s appointments, picking up medicine, taking people out of town to visit relatives,” said John Personett, the organization’s executive director. “They didn’t go into the food side of things for at least a couple years.”

After the city acquired the former train depot from CSX in the mid-1980s, it eventually offered the space to then-executive Director Hank Whelan, who served in the position for 27 years.

“Open Door has been in this building ever since, serving food to the community,” said Personett. “We service families in the Wa-Nee school district, so we operate in both Elkhart and Kosciusko counties. We provide food, rent and utility assistance and vouchers through the Nappanee United Methodist Thrift Shop for clothes.

The income requirements for Open Door’s clients are the same as those for the free/ reduced lunch program in the schools. Upon their first visit, a family must show proof of residency and income and can then come semi-monthly.

Personett explained Open Door procures most of its food from the Northern Indiana Food Bank, either through donation or by discounted purchase. There are other sources, including Milford Food Bank, from which Open Door stocks its shelves. Because of Open Door’s limited space, NIFB has waived its requirement to let

people choose what food they want, which allows Personett and other volunteers to prepack the bags for those in need.

A nonprofit, Open Door works closely with The Center (formerly Family Christian Development Center), another food bank/assistance organization operating in Nappanee. Personett emphasized neither group is concerned about people using both resources to receive food and other help. Both Open Door and The Center are members of the Emergency Food Assistance Program, a federal program that provides food deliveries for distribution. Both groups also coordinate their efforts with the appropriate township trustees to meet people’s needs.

Open Door is able to offer some frozen and fresh foods to its clients, including meat, vegetables and even wild game donated from area processors.

Local bakeries and grocery stores also donate baked goods and other products to Open Door to distribute to families.

“Right now, we’re serving around 100 families each month, which includes multiple visits,” said Personett. “That number can vary depending on layoffs, holidays and other factors. Our motto is ‘It’s given to us and we’re giving it back to them.’ But I still feel it’s important to be a good steward of what we have.

Open Door has about 20 volunteers, some of whom also serve on the 12-member board.

Others give two hours a day, one day a week. The city still owns the building, paying for utilities and furnishings. Many city employees are also on hand to help when a shipment of food is delivered.

“It’s something I need to do,” concluded Personett. “I’m looking at a few more years to be in charge. Then I’ll back off and let somebody else take over.

“We’re here because the people in the community — the businesses, the individuals, the

Clay Club seeks new members at Nappanee Arts Center The November meetings of the Clay Club at the Nappanee Arts Center will meet Thursday, Nov. 2, and Thursday, Nov. 16. Afternoon and evening sessions are available from either 1-3:30 p.m. or 6-8:30 p.m.

Obituaries Fredric L. Armstrong Insurance Agent

Joyce A. Day

Fredric L. Armstrong, 95, Winchester, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023.

He was born March 10, 1928, in Randolph County, to Glen B. Armstrong and Martha Harbour Armstrong.

Following his 1945 graduation from WinFREDRIC L. chester High School, Fred married Louise G. CleARMSTRONG ments. He started his insurance career in 1960 and in 1967, he established Fred Armstrong and Associates, later adding real estate to his insurance operation. This business, with offices in Winchester and Parker City, continued for 30 years. During this time, Mr. Armstrong served on the board of directors of the Parker Banking Company and was president of Randolph County Board of Realtors. His proudest accomplishment was being able to provide jobs for many people in the pursuit of his career.

Fred’s memberships include Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, as well as BPOE No. 768 Portland Elks, both over 60 years. He also belonged to the Rotary Club, the National and State Association of Realtors and the Tippecanoe Lake Country Club.

Fred’s greatest pleasure was spending time with his family and friends at the family home on beautiful Lake Tippecanoe in northern Indiana He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years; parents; two sisters; and a brother. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Pegg; son, F. Scott Armstrong; a granddaughter and a grandson; and six greatgrandchildren.

A service to celebrate Fred’s life will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the Walker Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial to follow at Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester. Friends and family may call from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Robert E. “Bob” Eppich, 85, died Oct. 19, 2023.

He was born May 1, 1938. In 1960, he married Marilyn (Frey) Eppich.

In 2007, he married Judith Schmahl; she survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Laurel Canan, Kathy Slezak and Julie Eppich; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; stepchildren, Jeffrey Schmahl, Stephen Schmahl, Julie Sanders, David Schmahl and Carrie Vonderheide; and 16 stepgrandchildren.

Forrest Lee Feightner, 91, Ligonier, died Oct. 22, 2023.

He was born Aug. 26, 1932. On July 2, 1955, he married Peggy J. Ramsby, who preceded him in death in 1998.

On Nov. 4, 2000, he married Peggy E. Moore; she survives.

Also surviving are his children, Robert C. Freightner, Fort Wayne, and Arlynn Haarer, Tampa, Fla.; stepdaughter, Kathryn McDowell, Syracuse; a granddaughter; four stepgrandchildren; three stepgreatgrandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Ellen Hochstetler, Topeka.

Meet illustrator and American modernist Margaret Lefranc

By DARLA MCCAMMON and DEEANNA MURASKI Guest Writers This week, we are exploring the art of an American painter, who was also an illustrator and an American Modernist: Margaret Lefranc.

Born in Brooklyn, to wealthy immigrant parents, Lefranc worked in multiple disciplines, such as portraits, florals, stilllifes, and landscapes. Her talent was expressed in oil, watercolor, gouache, and pastels, etchings and more.

Lefranc produced portraits, figures, florals, still lifes and landscapes. She was recognized in a variety of compositions and monotypes.

At 18, she received accolades from Alfred Stieglitz and, in November 1928, at 22, she received rave reviews in La Revue Moderne, when her works were shown in Paris.

A youngest child, Lefranc missed much schooling due to poor health, but her family was made aware of her desire to become an artist by the time she was 6 years old and decided that art would one day be her chosen career. The Brooklyn home of her youth was then covered inside with all sorts of artwork and inspirational art, including portraits of famous people.

In New York City, Lefranc attended several art schools via her wealthy family’s chauffeur.

Her mother, tired from housekeeping, talked her husband, Abe, into moving into two suites at the Hotel Pennsylvania in Manhattan. She spent a lot of time alone when she wasn’t in the hands of a caregiver. World War I caused major changes in Lefranc’s family including a move to Berlin Abe’s shipping business closed with the beginning of World War I when one of his tankers was torpedoed by the Germans and the survivors were shot in their lifeboats. Abe was commissioned by the U. S. Government to scrap the Ger-

Photo provided by Darla McCammon. man fleet, and the girl’s parents moved to Germany but left the children in the U.S. Celeste, the elder, who was 9 years older and married, looked after Margaret, who finished the last few months in school, and at 13, traveled by freighter to join her parents in Berlin where she contracted rheumatic fever. She spent almost a year in bed, did not speak German until six months later, and, at that time, was not exposed to the widespread hardship in the city.

Once, he brought an old woman he had met on the street to pose by Lefranc’s bedside for a small amount of money. Lefranc was aware that the money from the sketch would allow the woman to buy some food.

When Lefranc was well, she took classes in charcoal drawing and charcoal portraits at “Kunstschule des Westens”, the School of the West. After a year in Berlin, the Lefranc’s moved to Paris, where Lefranc’s work was appreciated.

Returning to New York, to renew her passport, Lefranc, 18, was introduced by Claude Bragdon, a close friend of her sister, to Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz looked at her art very seriously and said, “Young lady, you’re very gifted.

But you are also very French.

Come back after you’ve lived in America for 10 years.”
