Lake City Skiers Water Ski Show Team is Indiana’s only competitive water ski show team.

The team is celebrating 32 years of providing fun, family entertainment.

A nonprofit organization, the team provides free water ski shows to the public at Hidden Lake in Warsaw. Lake City Skiers was established in 1989.

The team doesn’t just ski for fun: it also participates in competitions.

The ski team won division II nationals back to back in 2006 and 2007 and again in 2014 and 2016. The team and its members have won numerous awards over the years.

true innovation to the pontoon industry. Lake City Skiers believes in its potential and are ready to test it, according to its website.

“We built a new barge this year,” said McLaughlin. “We use it as a starting dock at travel shows and for transporting equipment in our tournaments. We are also using it as part of our show this year for the aquarium scene in ‘Finding Nemo.’”

People are welcome to join the team. Practices are twice a week Monday and Wednesday.

“We do schedule some extra act practices when preparing for a tournament,” he said.

There is increased seating this year, and the site can host about 2,000 spectators, explained McLaughlin.

Free shows are at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and Tuesday at Hidden Lake, located on the southwest corner of US 30 and SR 15, just behind Smith Tire in Warsaw.

The last regular Sunday show is Sept. 5.

An all-star show is Sept. 11, at Hidden Lake.

This is the only time there is paid admission as it is a fundraiser.

“We put on a big show,” said McLaughlin.

“There will be skiers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan.”

His infectious optimism, bright creativity and amicable manner suit him perfectly for his job as marketing and communications manager at Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau, a position he has held going on three years.

Randall, 26, takes a “very proactive” approach to his duties, which include revamping and managing the organization’s website and social media platforms and “doing creative writing for our blog, advertising, website and social media.” In addition, “we have guests calling the building or stopping in and we help answer their questions.”

The marketing position is Randall’s second stint at the CVB. “When I was a sophomore in college I started here as the visitor center assistant,” said the Winona Lake resident. “I ran the front desk, helped visitors, took calls and maintained our inventory of brochures. When I applied in 2016 I wanted to get some experience working in an office environment,” he said, noting “up until then I was always in retail.”

Randall, who was born and raised in downtown Akron, helped

his grandparents, who owned Viking Foods, for 10 years, from eighth grade through his college years, unloading trucks, stocking shelves, running the cash register and occasionally delivering groceries. During college he also worked at Menards in Warsaw, selling doors and windows.

A graduate of Tippecanoe Valley High School, Randall attended Ivy Tech for two years, and finished his four-year bachelor’s degree in communications at Grace College.

His communications degree was his second choice. “I originally wanted to study marketing and pretty quickly learned that a lot of marketing was business oriented, which is OK, but I wanted it to be more about people and personal communications,” so he switched majors, and is glad he did. “I have always been outgoing,” he said.

“I love meeting new people and initiating conversations.”

He cited his greatest singular satisfaction in his current position as “doing a whole new website” for the visitor’s bureau. “It is definitely more user friendly now. We have a lot more content and photography. I am very happy how it turned out and being able to work on that and keep it updated.”

Randall is currently “working on the 2022 Experience Guide, a travel guide of the county. I do some of the photography and writ-

ing projects and also work with freelancers.”

He said 2020 was “definitely a rough year” for the visitors bureau. “COVID forced us to become more creative. Around the world, travel took a big hit, and around here we had to think of ways to promote restaurants and other businesses.

“We couldn’t let them go out of business, but we couldn’t tell people to go visit them. We encouraged people to do social distancing outdoors or do their business online.” As a result, “we actually gained more businesses during COVID than we lost.”

During his free time, he enjoys kayaking on Winona Lake and “spending a lot of time in the village,” particularly at the Light Rail Cafe & Roaster and Port Winona Wine & Market. “I am very interested in people and getting to know them and having those relationships and a lot of times getting out of my comfort zone,” he said. “That is where you learn and asking questions is how you grow.”

Randall’s parents still live in Akron. His mother works as a teacher, and his father, who retired as manager of Viking Foods when the family sold the business in 2019, now works in Warsaw at Seymour Midwest, a global supplier of hand tools.

“We want you to come back to a vibrant college experience in which you can engage fully in the life of the university and with each other.

Whether we can do that successfully, however, depends on everyone doing their part and caring about the health and safety of other people at Manchester,” said Abby Van Vlerah, vice president of student life, in an email to students.

“While we have a plan for the fall, the Delta variant is spreading nationwide, particularly in areas where not enough people have been vaccinated. We may need to adjust our plan, depending on state and local levels of COVID-19 or our campus-wide vaccination rate,” she said.

The northeast Indiana University urges all members of the Manchester University to be vaccinated.

“I cannot stress this strongly enough. This new outbreak has been described as a pandemic of the unvaccinated,” said President Dave McFadden. “Getting vaccinated will help protect the most vulnerable among us. The vaccines are safe, free and widely available. They also are our way out of this pandemic.”

On-campus vaccination clinics will be offered at the North Manchester campus from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 24 and 31.

Manchester University has campuses in Fort Wayne and North Manchester.

Deer are much more common now MILESTONES

“I need to decide on a subject for my next article,” I said to my daughter recently, and she responded, “Write about deer.”

The next morning, coincidentally, I saw two whitetail deer, an adult followed by a spindly legged fawn in the field on the other side of the road from our front lawn.

Whitetail deer are the most numerous deer of North America. Their range is from southern Canada south into Mexico, all of North America except an area of the Southwest, California, Nevada, Utah and a bit of western Arizona and Colorado.

A male whitetail is a big animal, three and a half feet tall, weighing up to 400 pounds. A female is much smaller, three feet tall and weighing 50 to 200 pounds. According to “A Field Guide to the Mammals (of North America),” “the whitetail is the most important big game mammal of the east (North America).”

I hit a deer on the road once. I

saw it, jammed on the brakes before I hit it. I knocked it down but didn’t appear to injure it badly. I stopped and as I was getting out of the car, the deer got up and ran.

I had a deer hit me, my car, once.

I saw it coming, running, up out of a ditch by the side of the road. It hit the side of my car. It didn’t appear to be injured and ran away, but it knocked the outside mirror on the driver’s side off my car.

Whitetail deer weren’t as common when I was young as they are now. I grew up in Iowa and never saw a deer until I was a teenager.

Then, one afternoon in a wooded area at the edge of town, an area where there was a two-lane gravel road and many birds, an area I visited often after I got a driver’s license, I saw and was thrilled to see a whitetail buck.

There was a deer in the pasture for several weeks once. It appeared to have gotten into the pasture, then couldn’t get back out, couldn’t jump the fence. A healthy deer, particularly a male, a stag which this was, can jump a 7-foot fence I read, and out pasture fence is only 5-foot. But there that deer was, going round and round just inside the fence. My daughter and I called it our pet deer. But one morning, when my daughter and I went to the pas-

ture to see my daughter’s horses, our pet deer was gone.

I saved a deer from drowning once. It had broken through ice on a lake, was swimming and appeared to be unable to get out of the water and back on the ice. It just kept slipping back when it tried to climb out of the water.

Seeing it I got a flat-bottomed boat, pushed the boat to the edge of the hole in the ice where the deer was, grabbed the deer by its antlers and hauled it out of the water and into the boat. Then I pushed the boat and deer to shore.

Deer, like other big game animals of North America, bison, moose, elk, were slaughtered unmercifully in pioneer days, before there were laws limiting hunting. They had not recovered by the time I was a boy which is the reason, I believe, I never saw a deer until I was a teenager. Now deer are common, probably the most common big game animal in North America, almost certainly the most widespread.

I see deer often in spring and summer and not uncommonly in winter, not only in the field across the road from my home or beside the road or crossing the road when I’m driving, or this time of year a doe with a fawn or two, twins are common.

Grace Village celebrates its modern revamped dining room %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Those living in Grace Village Retirement Community’s Assisted Living now have a renovated dining area.

A ribbon-cutting was held Tuesday, Aug. 3, for the facility’s revamped assisted living dining room. Grace Village staff and residents and Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce members were present.

“It has been a long time com-

ing,” noted Grace Village CEO Justin Kimbrell before the ribboncutting. He said the pandemic slowed the process.

“We’re really excited to modernize within our community,” he continued. “We had over $71,000 raised for this project, which is amazing.”

That came from grants and individual donors, Kimbrell later explained to InkFreeNews.

The redesign reflects Winona Lake with a lot of blue tones. Haab said the project took about eight weeks.

“I just hope that it brings some brightness … I mean it’s been a gloomy year, so this is just such a cool area that I hope (residents are) really proud of,” Kimbrell said. “Dining is important, so I think it being in a cool setting, it just helps (make) it even better.”

Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle Dukes received approval Tuesday morning, Aug. 3, during the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting to apply for the 2021 Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant.

The grant is in the amount of $24,000.

The Patrick Leahy Bulletproof Vest Partnership, created by the Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Act of 1998, is a unique U.S. Department of Justice initiative designed to provide a critical resource to state and local law enforcement.

Since 1999, the BVP program has awarded more than 13,000 jurisdictions a total of $522 million in federal funds for the purchase of more than one million vests (1,441,013) as of November 2020.

The funds would be used to purchase bulletproof vests for deputy sheriffs in Kosciusko County. Dukes said he will be looking into acquiring vests for jail officers as well.

In other business, Eagle Scout Jeffrey Naundorf-Miller was recognized for earning all 137 Boy Scouts of America merit badges. Naundorf-Miller of Warsaw is a member of Boy Scouts Troop 715 in the Warsaw-Winona Lake area.

Commissioners presented him with a plaque recognizing him as “an outstanding citizen of Kosciusko County and an exemplary Boy Scout.”

“I went out and did water sports. I’m not the greatest at water sports, but I did it and

that’s what counts,” NaundorfMiller said, giving an example of one of the badges he earned.

“It’s making sure that boys get out there and try something they wouldn’t normally have tried.”

“That’s as many as you can earn,” said Troop 715 Leader Richard McCleary of NaundorfMiller’s accomplishment. “This is something that is rarely done.

There are very few that stay with it after they become an Eagle Scout and he did it. No one has finished 137 merit badges in this council.”

Anthony Wayne Area Council–Boy Scouts of America Senior District Executive Michael Skeens said Naundorf-Miller is only the 475th Eagle Scout to obtain all 137 badges nationwide.

Naundorf-Miller recently graduated from Warsaw Community High School and is attending Ivy Tech. He is the son of Mindy and Stephanie Miller.

• County Highway Superintendent Steve Moriarty received approval to purchase a Ring-O-Matic Jetter/Hydro Vacuum for $188,725 with available funds in the highway department budget.

• Syracuse resident Vicki Morton voiced concern about county roads that are in disrepair, specifically Morrison Island Road in Turkey Creek Township. Morton said the entire road floods each time it rains.

Mishler Funeral Home celebrating 75 years with open house Mishler Funeral Home, at the corner of SR 15 and CR 900N, Milford, will be celebrating 75 years in business with an open house from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.

The event will feature food by Saucy’s Barnyard BBQ, free door prizes including a monument.

The medical loan closet provides the loan of durable medical equipment for those in need in Kosciusko County at no cost. Loan items include crutches, wheel chairs, canes, walkers, bedside commodes, raised toilet seats, shower seat/benches, adult incontinence disposable underwear. The inventory will change frequently and it is recommended calling ahead to make sure what is needed is available.

Through this loan closet it is asked people return the loaned items (except the disposable underwear) in clean and working order once the items are no longer needed.

But it goes beyond loaning out items. Community donations of items are accepted. It is asked items be in good working order that have been clean/sanitized.

No medications of any kind can be accepted. Someone from Mishler Funeral Home must be on-hand to receive equipment at the facility.

By donating items, the public is joining the mission to make a positive difference in the lives of people affected by aging or disabilities in the community.

Hours to receive loan items or donate items are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday. But it is recommended to make an appointment to pick up or drop off. Curbside service is offered.

Third Generation The Mishler Funeral Home is a third generation tradition.

Wade Mishler established the Milford facility in 1946 after purchasing the funeral home from C.R. Brittsan, located in the former Doll’s Decorating Services.

Mishler was born and raised west of Milford and was first introduced to the science of undertaking by a friend of his father’s, Charles C. Rohrer. Rohrer owned and operated a combination furniture store and undertaking business in New Paris.

On May 29, 1937, Mishler, then a senior at Milford High School, got a job with Brittsan, gradually learning the trade. In 1939 he enrolled in the Indiana College of Embalming in Indianapolis. He completed the courses but had to wait until he was 21 to get his license.

Not long after receiving his license, Mishler was called to fight for his county and would spend the next four years in the service as an embalmer, setting up morgues in the West Indies and Philippines.

Mishler returned home Dec. 7, 1945. A few months later, May

For 26 years Mishler provided undertaking services and ambulance services to the town of Milford.

New toy store to hold grand opening Thingamabaubles, a new toy store, will be holding its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

When Wade Mishler retired in 1988, Gary Eastlund who had purchased the Syracuse Funeral Home from Charlie Harris in 1985, acquired the Mishler family business on North Main Street and later built the new facility in Milford in 1997. It became known as the Eastlund Funeral HomeMishler Chapel.

Ryan Mishler, grandson of Wade Mishler and son of Greg Mishler, took over the Bremen funeral home upon his father’s retirement in 1999 and then purchased the Syracuse and Milford locations when Eastlund retired in 2001.

The Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home was sold to Dave and Sheryl Eastlund Colquitt Dec. 11, 2009.

OBITUARIES Louise E. Jacoby Shull Retired From Fort Wayne Development Center Louise E. (Krom) Jacoby Shull, 98, was called home by her Creator and Lord, Jesus Christ, Aug. 1, 2021, at Timbercrest Healthcare.

Louise was the oldest child of Milo O. and Frieda P. (Knoop) Krom, born on Dec. 25, 1922, in North Manchester. Her siblings were Thelma (Gordan) Smith, Lewis Krom, Trisha (Russell) Herron, all deceased. She /28,6( ( grew up in the South Whitley-Columbia City areas and 6+8// graduated from Columbia City High School in 1942.

Louise married Harold M. Jacoby Aug. 18, 1947. They raised four children in Fort Wayne: Kathryn, Carolyn, Nafisa (Sheryl) and Michael. Harold died suddenly Dec. 7, 1974. As a full time homemaker, she then found employment at the Fort Wayne Development Center until retirement. In 1989, she married Everett W. Shull and shared life with him until he passed on in 2000.

Louise enjoyed gardening, travel, bingo and being with friends. She belonged to many organizations over the years. Louise was a member of the United Methodist Church and in her last active years, she faithfully attended Victory Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathryn (Barry) Blocher of North Manchester, Carolyn (Jim) Geifer of Saint Louis, Nafisa-Sheryl (Shabbir) Morriswalla of Fort Wayne; and son, Michael (Karin) Jacoby of Knoxville, Tenn. She had 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren, all living. Louise will be remembered for her hard work, faithful prayer and thankful heart.

Calling was held from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at McKee Mortuary, 1401 SR 114 West, North Manchester. Funeral services began at the conclusion of calling. Pastor Tim Morbitzer and Pastor David Hendry officiated.

Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens at a later date.

United Way’s ‘Big Give’ program provided school supplies United Way of Whitley and Kosciusko Counties “Big Give” program delivered more than 2,500 bags of school supplies Wednesday, Aug. 4.

Driven by more than 50 companies, churches and individuals, United Way’s initiative will produce more than 100 bags of school supplies to all 20 elementary schools in the region. United Way is committed to making sure every student begins school ready to succeed.

“The Big Give is one of my favorite back to school events,” said Aimee Lunsford, principal at Lincoln Elementary School

in Warsaw. “I love that the United Way works so hard to level the playing field for all of our students right out of the gate, providing school supplies for any student that is in need.”

The project enables volunteers to make a personal connection with a child. Through a grant from the Zimmer Biomet Foundation, United Way secured 2,500 drawstring bags.

Each bag was tagged with a supply list for a grade level. Volunteers get a chance to pick just the right items to fill the bag, often putting in more supplies in than required. The bags are COUPON PLU PL #1099

Goodwill to host two job fairs in August The Goodwill Center for Career Connections will host two job fairs with companies from

across the Warsaw area.

The first will be from 1-4 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 11, and will have members from Staffmark Staffing Agency, Elara Caring (Home Care), Enlivant (Lake City Place) and Da-Lite. The second will be held from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, and will have members from DaLite, Jiffy Lube and recruiters from the U.S. Marine Corps.

Potential applicants are encouraged to bring a copy of their resume.
