KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR AWL board president loves seeing animals find forever homes %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for pets and people in need,” stated John Lantz, Warsaw.

“My wife, Karen, and I have two sister Labrador rescue dogs, Lilly and Lacy, and two sister rescue cats, Josie and Jessie. I love seeing abandoned pets get forever homes.” Lantz is board president of the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County.

After retiring early, Lantz spent six years on the board of the all-volunteer Fort Wayne Pet Food Pantry acting as board president for four of those years.

“Last year the Pet Food Pantry gave out over 100,000 pounds of free dry pet food, plus canned food, treats, litter, etc., to those struggling financially, including seniors, veterans, families, homeless and those with disabilities,” Lantz said.

“We have friends and family on Lake Tippecanoe who have wanted us to move closer for a long time. We’ve lived in Warsaw for a year and a half and love it in Kosciusko County. Local organizations are so involved making this community a better place for everyone. We have 587 nonprofit organizations in our county.” The Animal Welfare League is just

Get out and sell the Junk In Your Trunk The North Webster Lakeland Kiwanis Club will be presenting the Junk In Your Trunk sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 4, in the parking lot of North Webster Church of God, 302 N. Main St. Junk In Your Trunk allows locals to sell their used junk from their car, van, truck or SUV or from tables beside their vehicle.

Vendor cost is $25, which includes two pre-assigned, adjacent

parking spots for their vehicle and tables. All spaces will be assigned by number. Vendor setup will begin at 9 a.m.

Vendors are encouraged to call (708) 334-3355 to reserve one of only 40 spaces as soon as possible.

All visitors of the sale should park at the north end of the church parking lot. On the southeast side of the parking lot, visitors can stop by the Main Street Coffee Company for refreshments.

We’re getting ready to meet with area town councils sharing about AWL and our new Cat House.

We’re available for speaking engagements.”

The AWL shelter staff has such passion working to find homes for shelter pets entrusted to their care. “We have happy stories every day of pets going home with loving families. Of course, we also have sad stories of people having to give up their pets.

“Last year we took in 1,313 pets at our facility. Every pet gets a complete wellness check.

We provide microchips, vaccines, spay/neuter, and any needed health care. In 2021 we reunited 214 families with their pets because they had been microchipped. We are so thankful to have four area vet clinics that go above and beyond for our sick and injured pets at reduced rates for their care. Last year our total ani-

Last year AWL adopted out over 500 cats at the Warsaw PetSmart.

AWL encourages senior citizens to adopt senior pets. “We feel that pets are so important to the health and well-being of our senior clients by keeping them active. Pets also provide unconditional love and companionship.

For some, a dog or cat might be the only family they have living with them.”

The Lantzes have been married 41 years. They enjoy being outdoors and spending time with their labs.

Open Class Fashion Show at Elkhart County 4-H Fair

July 1. The fashion show has age divisions and categories for clothing.

Judging is based on the contestant’s appearance, posture, poise and grooming; the garment on the contestant — becomingness, fit, style, texture, fabric, effect of undergarments and accessories; and the constructed article — fabric and trimmings, workmanship, related values and the quality of work as it contributes to the overall look as it is modeled.

The fashion show judging will

be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, in the Home & Family Arts Building on the 4-H Fairgrounds in Goshen.

The public show will be part of the “Open House” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, in the Home & Family Arts Building. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded.

All interested seamstresses are encouraged to participate. The rules and regulations and entry form are available at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County Office just inside Gate 2 of the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, 17746 CR 34, Goshen. Ivy Tech Warsaw is partnering with Whitko Community Schools to create a new Ivy Tech Academy in the former library space of Whitko Jr.-Sr. High School. Renovations will take place this summer so students can begin using the new facility next school year.

The intent is to create a dedicated space where students can attend Ivy Tech college classes virtually or online during their school day. For many students, earning college credits while still in high school can accelerate their college career and save time and money.

I just finished reading the book, “Surviving the Economic Collapse,” by Fernando Aguirre. He is a citizen of Argentina and lived through the before and after of their country’s economic collapse.

The main catalyst for it was the uncontrolled, reckless and irresponsible government spending that directly fueled the collapse.

Our currency will be worthless, and if the liberal left governing our country keeps up the same bad behavior, our country is next.

Triton hires new athletic director Triton School Corporation approved Rodney Younis as the new athletic director for Triton School Corporation, starting with the 2022-23 school year.

He was recommended and approved at the May 9 school board meeting.

The decision was recently made to split the athletic director and assistant principal job into two positions to better meet the needs of the corporation. This started the search for the next athletic director.

More than 20 candidates applied for the position, four of whom ended up interviewing with the search committee. Interviews took place Thursday, May 5, and the search committee consisted of teachers, coaches, administration, parents and students.

After interviewing several qualified candidates, the committee decided that Younis best met the current needs of the staff, students and Triton School community.

Younis has spent the past 20 years teaching in the health and physical education department at Triton Jr./Sr. High School.

Much of that time has been spent in the weight room, working with students on strength and conditioning.

He was the head football coach for 14 years and has coached a total of 24 years in various sports. Younis’ coaching experience, leadership and ability to build meaningful relationships made him the ideal candidate. The Triton School community would like to congratulate Younis on becoming

Each year the Liberty Sewing Circle honors Kosciusko vets with hand-stitched quilts. This preMemorial Day tradition is LSC’s way of honoring vets and showing them their sacrifices have not been forgotten, even if it hasn’t been said.

This year, 10 local veterans were honored with these quilts, each one displaying the colors of our country and different patterns incorporating our country’s flag. These quilts take hundreds of hours to complete and are personally given to each vet by those who sewed them.

During the Threads of Valor luncheon held May 10 in Warsaw, Mayor Joe Thallemer was invited to speak. When he stood at the podium, he began by asking all the vets in the room how they became soldiers — enlistment or draft. He then began to talk about his own experience of watching the news in 1972 and waiting for draft numbers to be read. Thallemer reminisced on missing the draft and feeling resentful that he never served.

“Maybe I’m not credible to talk about vets ... because I’m not one,” said Thallemer, adding, “I always wondered why I wasn’t just led down that path to serve my country.”

Also invited to speak was Dale Campbell, HR manager and member of Zimmer Biomet’s Veteran’s Resource Group. His grandfather was a “China Marine,” which, he explained, was a soldier who in-

Akron, Mentone elementary schools receive national recognition Akron and Mentone elementary schools announced they have been recognized as 2021-22 Project Lead The Way Distinguished Schools. They are two of just 282 schools across the U.S. to receive this honor for providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through PLTW Launch. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that serves millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in schools across the U.S. According to Inga Omondi, Tippecanoe Valley School Cor-

TWF brings local lake leaders together to share best practices The Watershed Foundation brought local lake leaders together to share best practices.

Representatives from the 10 lake associations within the 236-squaremile area of the Upper Tippecanoe River Watershed met May 5 to share ideas and learn from one another at the Lake Leaders Gathering hosted by TWF. Around the room, strangers became friends, smiling and talking about the importance of their lake communities.

Lake leaders from associations in Whitley, Noble and Kosciusko counties were present for the event, which began with dinner and continued with discussion about issues impacting the lakes in the watershed, including water quality, seasonal flooding and current legislative issues involving the lakes.

Additionally, attendees were updated on TWF’s current activities.

“So much can be gained by bringing people together,” said Lyn Crighton, TWF’s executive director. “While we might not all live on the same lake, we have so much in common, and what one lake is doing to address an issue might be something another lake could try as well.”

The featured topic of the evening’s discussion was an overview of low-cost, high-impact communication marketing tools lake associations can use to help distribute information to their members and local residents. Attendees were invited to share their best practices as well.

TWF was founded in 1997 to protect and improve water quality in the Upper Tippecanoe River Watershed; spanning from Crooked Lake

in Whitley County to the WarsawWinona Lake area. Over the past 25 years, TWF has worked with farmers and lake residents to construct 200-plus water quality improvement projects. In the last six years alone, these efforts have prevented more than 1 billion pounds of weeds and algae from growing in area lakes and streams.

Frankenberg yearned to be in drama and earned her credentials at the Tring Park School for the Performing Arts. While at this school, she realized the stage name of Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg might be a little daunting. She chose the name Jane Seymour, in part to honor the queen and secondly, she felt the name was a more appealing moniker for an acting career.

We agree.

By 1969 Seymour was ready for her first film called “Oh! What a Lovely War.” Opportunities grew from that point and today her list of credits is many pages long.

“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” a weekly TV series, made her a household name back when network TV and it’s four to six channel selection was the only game in town.

Although with her stunning eternal beauty and the interesting diverse story line, Dr. Quinn would still be popular today, 24 years later. Another movie, especially popular in our area, was “Somewhere in Time,” which was filmed in parts of Indiana and Michigan — especially Mackinac Island.

DeeAnna’s favorite is Seymour’s lesser-known depiction of the aristocracy during the “reign of terror” in the movie, “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” Seymour falls in love with a foppish aristocrat, whom she marries to help her cause trying to keep those from the guillotine, only to find out her husband is secretly also trying to do the same.

Seymour has won many awards as an actress for her heartfelt, dramatically depicted characters; however, her recognition in another artist category has gained her equal awards.

Seymour is an exceptional painter, using oil and watercolors.

Her subjects are often children and nature scenes. She draws inspiration from her own four children. It is done in very nice

It may be a little ironic that her most famous jewelry design is an open heart, which she states reminds people to always keep their heart open — which the four-time

divorcee, may or may not have done, depending on how you look at it. However, her general love for all human beings is evident in her generous fundraising for her Open Hearts Foundation and other nonprofit charities.

American Legion Post 223 cruise-in set for Friday Syracuse American Legion Post 223, 1008 S. Huntington St., welcomes young and old, individuals and families, car buffs and automotive illiterates to its third Cruise-In Friday, May 27.

The cruise-in portion of the event will run from 5-8 p.m., and Big Daddy Dupree and The Broke & Hungry Blues band will provide live music from 7-10 p.m. on the Legion’s new patio.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and chips will be available on the patio, dished up by members of the post from their grills and cookers during the festivities.

Also included in the fun: a 50-50 drawing, with tickets going for $1

apiece or six for $5; and a raffle for a flat-top griddle, with tickets running $5 each.

The cruise-in, sponsored this year by the American Legion Riders, is free for participants and spectators, and everyone is invited to bring their vehicle for display — “cars, trucks, motorcycles, whatever you drive, whatever you ride, you can bring,” said organizer Randy Rinker.

President Hopkins asks ‘Who’s on your journey?’

Dr. Joseph Hopkins, the 12th president of Campbellsville University, presided over his first commencement, asking the 1,593 students who were receiving their degrees, “Who’s on your journey?”

Hopkins presented an address telling the experience of his family fulfilling one of his bucket list items — traveling to the Sahara Desert where he and his wife, Suzanne, and sons, Joseph and Vance, camped and enjoyed “who” was on their 115-degree heated trip.

He told the graduates they are about to launch on a journey of their own. “Most often, the questions being asked at this stage are where, what, why and most especially, how,” he said, while he challenged them to add the “who” to their list of questions.

Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts Wednesday, May 11, sought money from the Kosciusko County Convention, Recreation & Visitors Commission to help pay for hotel accommodations while its facility normally used for housing undergoes emergency repairs.

A request for $80,000 to cover hotel expenses for about 20 people for the holiday season performances in December was turned down, but the board approved $15,000 to be used for a new website for the entertainment center in Warsaw.

The board balked at the hotel request because they prefer to provide support for aspects other than operational expenses, said board member Mark Skibowski.

Wagon Wheel Executive Director Lakesha Green said they were looking to ease one burden in hopes of directing money to another issue and mentioned White Hill Manor, an adjoining property, which has some serious roof damage.

White Hill is normally used to house actors and staff, but they’re currently looking at other options.

Green was joined by about 15 staff members and supporters, including County Councilmember Joni Truex, for the request

After learning about roof repairs, board members suggested they would be more inclined to help with that.

“We can talk about those things,” Skibowski said.

Wagon Wheel officials were encouraged to return in July with a revised request.

The request comes as the theater attempts to recover after two difficult years under the pandemic.

Staff was asked about long-term expansion plans at Wagon Wheel and the fundraising campaign needed to finance it. Those plans are still looming but are probably a few years away, Green said.

The board approved the $15,000 request for the website, contingent upon approval of an additional appropriation in June by the county council. The additional appropriation is needed because the money allocated for 2022 is nearly exhausted.

Green said the current website is not user-friendly and sometimes crashes.

The board also approved providing $10,643 to Lake City Skiers for the construction of a new storage building.

2022 Milford Family Fun Fest set for May 28 %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU The 2022 Milford Family Fun Fest is once again offering a wide variety of events and activities for young and old alike from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 28. This year will also see a return of live stage entertainment sponsored by Milford Lions and located on Main Street between The Papers Inc. and Milford Volunteer Fire Department.

Since 2008, Beer and Jessop Amusements, a Milford-based company, has created a midway on downtown Main Street featuring an assortment of carnival rides and attractions, which are free to the public. Food and drink vendors will also be on hand.

The return of the Milford Lions stage means a return of the Cutie Contest, a great photo opportunity for youngsters and their families, as well as the crowning of the Senior King and Queen.

Also hitting the stage will be a variety of musical acts, including Spaniels Forever, featuring Billy Shelton, whose career started at Roosevelt

High School in 1948 when he performed with Pookie Hudson, co-writer of “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight.” Spaniels Forever carries on the doo-wop, R&B tradition. John Gaut, Big Daddy Dupree’s Broke & Hungry Blues Band and Quentin Flagg will also perform.

Bowen Center announces CEO retirement and successor The Bowen Center board of directors recently announced the retirement of its president and chief executive officer, Kurt Carlson. The longtime head of Indiana’s largest community mental health center will step down at the end of June, and Robert Ryan, Bowen Center senior vice president of operations, has been appointed to succeed Carlson as president/CEO beginning July 1.

Carlson has been a fervent champion for those suffering with mental illness. “For 49 years, Kurt Carlson has demonstrated his commitment to those living with mental illness and addiction, especially the most vulnerable low-income and underserved populations,” said Beth Pinkerton, board chairperson.

“Kurt’s visionary leadership and innovation has helped ensure those individuals have ac-

cess to high quality, affordable care, allowing them to live their best lives. We are privileged to continue the strong legacy he is leaving and know Dr. Ryan is the right choice to lead Bowen

Center through its next phase of continued growth,” said Pinkerton.

When Carlson was hired 1989, the center was struggling financially and had a staff of 100 serving five counties. Under Carlson’s leadership the company quickly found solid financial footing and now employs more than 1,300, serving the northern and central regions of Indiana and growing.

The center not only serves those suffering with mental illness, it also boasts a large case management team, a state-ofthe-art 20-bed psychiatric hospital, an opioid use disorder recovery center and in 2020 moved into integrated care with health clinics in Fort Wayne, Huntington and Warsaw and many more planned in the immediate future.

Memorial Day events to take place in Kosciusko County The following Kosciusko County communities are preparing for Memorial Day weekend celebrations.

Bourbon The American Legion Post will participate in a ceremony at noon, Sunday, May 29, at Etna Green Cemetery with a three-round volley.

Etna Green A service will be held at noon Sunday, May 29, at East Cemetery.

Leesburg The Leesburg community will be having a Memorial Day parade and service at 10:30 a.m.

Monday, May 30. There will be a flag raising by the Boy Scouts before the parade at the town hall.

The parade will proceed from the town hall south on Pearl Street then west on Prairie Street to Leesburg Cemetery.

The memorial service will follow the parade.

All veterans wishing to ride in the parade should be at town hall by 10:15 a.m. and all other participants should be in place by 10:15 a.m.

In case of rain, the memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. inside the Leesburg Lions Building.

Mentone The Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum and the Mentone Chamber of Commerce will host their annual Memorial Day program at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at the Mentone Cemetery. This event is in remembrance of local community veterans who served their country. A reception will take place immediately following the program at the museum, 210 S. Oak St. In case of rain, the program will take place in the Baptist Church next door to the museum.

Milford Milford will host its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30. Line up will begin at 9 a.m. with the parade stepping off at 10 a.m. sharp. This year, organizers hope to have

A Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at approximately 11 a.m. on the south lawn of Nappanee City Hall. American Legion Post 154’s honor guard will participate in the rifle volley and the laying of the wreath.

New Paris The annual New Paris community Memorial Day parade and ceremony will be held Sunday, May 29. The event is hosted by the New Paris Chamber of Commerce and New Paris Boy Scout Troop 12. The parade will step off at 2 p.m. from Main and Market streets and make its way to the New Paris/ Jackson Township Cemetery.

The ceremony will begin at approximately 2:15 p.m. in the cemetery with keynote speaker Steven Clark, a U.S. Army veteran and Elkhart County councilman.

North Webster The North Webster Community Center will host a Run for a Veteran 5K run/walk Saturday, May 28. Registration is at runsignup.com. Owens, a lance corporal (E-3), received several awards, including the National Defense Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation and Overseas Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in May 1999.

Owens then worked as a security officer in Vestal, N.Y., before moving to Warsaw. He and his wife Jennifer now live in Winona Lake.

Owens has three children, Andrew Jr., Isaiah and Alyson. He serves as the president of Young Tigers Football and Cheer.

“I want to thank everybody for this honor,” said Owens after the presentation. “I love this community and I look forward to growing more in this community.”

Andrew J. Owens, who served with the U.S. Marine Corps, is Kosciusko County’s May Veteran of the Month.

Owens, 44, of Winona Lake, was recognized at the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, May 10. Kosciusko County Veteran Service Officer Darryl McDowell presented him with a certificate and read a biography on him, which included the following information: Owens, the son of Robert Owens and Charlotte Holley, was born in Vestal, N.Y., on May 26, 1977.

He is a 1996 Vestal High School graduate and joined the Marines in June 1996 in Syracuse, N.Y. He did his basic training at Parris Island, S.C., and later advanced military training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

He also did additional schooling in Lawton, Okla. He was assigned to Mike Battery 3rd Battalion 11th Marines at Twentynine Palms, Calif., and Okinawa, Japan.

Owens served as clerk and Embark NCO for the battery. His tasks included performing maintenance on the M198 howitzer, preparing ammunition, firing the weapon, recording fire missions

Titus supporting Magical Meadows after barn destroyed Titus Funeral Home and Cremation Services announced recently it has made a donation to Magical Meadows after a barn, which was pivotal in the Meadows’ operation, was destroyed by straight-line winds late last month.

“We are simply shocked by the power of nature in the destruction of the Meadows’ hay barn and we wanted to help,” said Cory Benz.

“Not only were we shocked by the destruction, we were also shocked by the outpouring of support from the community. We put a plea for donations on our Facebook and pledged to match the first $1,000 given. So far, we’ve raised more than $3,000 for this fantastic local charity.” Benz is the owner and a funeral director at Titus Funeral Home. He also serves on the Magical Meadows board of directors.

According to Magical Meadows Executive Director Carl Adams, the loss of the barn has already affected Meadows’ bottom line. Adams said

they don’t think they’ll be able to use the hay that was stored in the barn, but went on to say the loss of the barn will not affect the production and movement of any classes.

Magical Meadows is a therapeutic riding program which is located outside of Warsaw. Their website showcases the programs they offer to children, youth and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities, in addition to veterans’ programs.

The Jim and Jean Northenor hay barn was built in March 2021 as a donation from the Northenor family. The barn was donated by Jean and Jim Northenor at a cost of more than $30,000. The replacement cost of the barn, hay and surrounding damaged structures is not currently known.

OBITUARIES Evelyn Lois Jagger Former Co-owner Of Jagger Hardware Store Evelyn Lois Jagger, 98, Rochester, formerly of Silver Lake, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2022, at home.

She was born May 29, 1923, in Silver Lake, to Roy C. and Elvah G. (Metzger) Kline.

After graduating from Silver Lake High School in 1941, Evelyn married William D. “Bill” (9(/<1 /2,6 Jagger the very next year on Aug. 15, 1942. The -$**(5 two would welcome four children throughout their marriage and Evelyn would find her true passion in being the ideal mother and caregiver to her household. In 1966, Bill and Evelyn would purchase a hardware store in Silver Lake. The two owned and operated Jagger Hardware Store for 28 years before selling in 1994.

Evelyn was strong in her faith and always led her household spiritually. She was dedicated in 1923 at the West Eel River Church of the Brethren in Silver Lake and was a member until its closing in 2018.

She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Laketon and a 60-year member of the West Eel River Women’s Fellowship. Evelyn is described as having the patience of Job and always being there for her children. She was an incredible cook and enjoyed canning vegetables from her garden.

The loving memory of Evelyn Lois Jagger will be forever cherished by her sons, Larry W. (Faye) Jagger, Columbia City, and Dr. Michael J. Jagger, Mishawaka; daughter, Gaylo A. Every year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Each May, Warsaw Community Public Library raises awareness about the importance of mental health and its impact on the well-being of all Americans. This includes children, adults, families and communities across the nation.

“August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.”

Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on.

DAR Good Citizens named

The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution is pleased to announce the DAR Good Citizens for the 2021-2022 school year. Each fall four Kosciusko County high schools have the opportunity to choose one senior student who exemplifies the following qualities: Dependability — Truthfulness, loyalty, punctuality, being worthy of trust.

Service — Cooperation, courtesy, contributing to the welfare of others.

Leadership — Personality, ability to assume responsibility and inspire others, decisionmaking.

Patriotism — Devotion to and support of the United States of America, supporting service members and veterans, working for causes that make one’s community stronger.

A student chosen as a Good Citizen may elect to participate in the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship Contest by providing a “résumé,” grade transcript and letters of recommendation and writing an impromptu, timed essay on the provided topic.

The local DAR Good Citizens are Emma Christenberry, Driedyn Hernandez and Hannah Weirick.

Christenberry is the daughter of Wayne and Sharon Christenberry, Warsaw. Her activities at Warsaw Community High School include yearbook staff, Philharmonic Orchestra, the art category in Academic Super Bowl and National Honor Society. Extracurricular activities and serving include Youth for Christ and youth group and youth ministry in her place of worship. She has been employed at Jimmy Johns. Future plans are to go to Grace College, majoring in art and minoring in behavioral science, to become an art therapist helping people who need a positive outlet of expression.

Hernandez is the son of Schaya Hernandez and Driedyn Hernandez, Syracuse.

At Wawasee High School, he is a member and captain of the

football team and honorable mention All-Conference. Hernandez belongs to DECA and yearbook club and has completed many business courses at Wawasee. He has coached Upwards basketball and worked at Subway, where he received a customer service star pin. Hernandez will attend college and achieve a bachelor’s degree in business management.

Weirick is the daughter of Jon and Valerie Weirick, Columbia City. She is a student at Lakeland Christian Academy where she is class president, played varsity volleyball, received Academic All-Conference and is a member of National Honor Society. She enjoys her church, 4-H, 4-H Junior Leaders and has been a 4-H camp counselor.

Weirick’s hobbies include photography, reading, bike riding, making jewelry and more. Her plan is to attend Cedarville University in Ohio with a major either in environmental science or business and a minor in biblical missions.

Christenberry, Hernandez and Weirick were honored at the March meeting of the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

Sommers supporting TOPGUN aviators A Warsaw native is serving with Naval Aviation Warfare Development Center supporting TOPGUN aviators at the Navy’s premier tactical air warfare training center.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Braden Sommers is a 2016 Warsaw Community High School graduate.

“I learned in Warsaw that no two people are the same and that everyone has a different background,” said Sommers.

“You shouldn’t judge people based on that.”

These lessons have helped Sommers while serving in the Navy.

Today, Sommers serves as an aviation electronics technician onboard Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada.

“I joined the Navy to better provide for my family because I wanted to be a better dad,” said Sommers.

Fifty-two years ago, TOPGUN was introduced with the mission of reducing casualties of naval aviators sustained during the Vietnam War. Within a year, this goal was reached, with the United States having one casualty for every 12 enemy deaths.

Since then, TOPGUN continues to train the finest naval aviators and has inspired one blockbuster movie released in May 1986, with a sequel planned for release in May of 2022.

Today’s U.S. Naval Aviators possess the professionalism, tactical skills, innovative mindset and understanding of advanced technologies to succeed against adversaries. They are disciplined critical thinkers who excel in challenging environments — like those seen in the movie, according to U.S. Navy officials.
