In addition, it is in the process of raising funds for a new building or a property to renovate due to the fact it has run out of room.

Lakeland Art Association was formed in 1957 by a group of artists in Kosciusko County. A central figure of the group, Fred Olds, was a local high school teacher and became a very wellknown artist.

In 1993, Lila O’Connell, a contemporary of Olds, opened the first Lakeland Art Center and Gallery. Lakeland Art Association has some of his work in their permanent collection.

LAA is a an educational not for profit and is operated by its volunteers, docents, and members.

“We’ve simply outgrown our space,” said Vice President Melodie Koher, who is also the former president. “So far, we have raised $20,000. We need about $500,000 more,” she said of the project.

The art gallery operates thanks to donations, grants and its members.

“LAA offers over 21 fine art events free of charge to the public each year,” said Koher. “We need more space and operating funds to continue to offer these fine art events and continue to add others.”

The goal, she said, is to have classrooms for art lessons, a library for art books and an area for its permanent collection.

“We have two art collectors that will donate pieces to us,” said Koher once the new, bigger location opens. “We have 62 members, and we have some from other states.”

These states include Illinois, Ohio and Michigan.

LAA also hosts a monthly art-related program. This can be a lecture, a show-and-tell, or a hands-on art project. The public is invited and there is no cost to attend.

“We also offer classes for all skill levels,” said Koher.

April’s exhibit is now on display and can be viewed until May 1. It is 18 pieces of Mark Eckel’s artwork. Its April program is by photographer and North Manchester resident, Arturo “Carlos” Yanez and his work will also be featured at the gallery from Aug. 4 to Sept. 18.

A juried spring art show is from May 5 to June 12.

“It’s one of the more prestigious (shows) in the area,” Koher said.

us because we’ve never done it before,” explained Koher.

This summer, LAA will be having garage sale at the gallery from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 25-26.

“We ask for gently-used housewares and art items to be brought into the gallery and donated for the sale. These sales have been successful fundraisers for LAA in recent years,” said Koher.

A members’ picnic and plein air paint day is July 17. August is “art in the yard” at the LLA gallery.

On April 22, Warsaw’s Rita Radke returned to the Parkview YMCA after a long time away.

She had been looking forward to it ever since receiving her COVID vaccine.

After being “locked up all winter,” Radke was glad to get back in the swing of things. “It makes you feel good … It’s a great way to get out of the house and strengthen my body.”

When she first became a member, Radke recalled being hesitant about using the machines, sticking with the exercise bikes and walking. But after multiple visits with friends she branched out.

“Everybody is very kind and it’s very clean,” Radke added.

She also appreciates the organization’s Christian focus.

Though her mother was religious, Radke was not a committed Christian until the age of 41, when her youngest brother, Frank Herendeen, died in an accident involving a drunk driver. “He was a Christian and I wanted to be sure I saw him again.”

Radke is a member of Warsaw Community Church, where she puts her artistic inclinations to work making greeting cards for parishioners on the sick list. She creates 20 per month, and is particularly drawn to those fighting cancer. Radke is a 22-year cancer survivor herself and counts her-

self lucky after doctors found her type one breast cancer early on.

Recent cards are illustrated with umbrellas and read, “Rain or shine, you’re a friend of mine.” They include Bible verses as well. She is particularly fond of Psalm 91, which is full of poetic lines like, “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day.”

“I don’t know how people get by without it,” Radke said of her faith.

Radke grew up on a farm in Noble County and she fondly remembers the long hours playing outside in the woods with her sisters and brothers. “We would go out after breakfast and not come back till evening.”

“There was so much freedom,” she reflected, “No diseases, traffic, play stations … .“ She did have some chores, like bringing the cows in or gathering eggs, but mostly, she said, “We played.”

Radke moved to Warsaw as an adult to work in the orthopedic industry. She started in a series of jobs until she had gained enough experience to work at Depuy Synthes. She started in the union doing inspections and worked her way to a supervisor position inspecting packaging.

Though she liked the work, she did not like working on Sundays, so she moved to the return area. Radke retired with benefits at age 57.

“It was awesome. Very few people quit,” she remembered.

“It was the best thing that happened to me as far as being able to get ahead in life.”

Now in her 70s, Radke credits the exercise she gets at the Y with helping her stay off diabetes medication. “That’s what I strive for.”

When not working out at the Y, Radke socializes with her many friends, going for walks or day tours around the area.

Otherwise, this self-described “homebody” enjoys seeing her two great-grandchildren.

“I spend quite a lot of time with them.”

Statehouse are doing, but it seems like they are ripping us off. Just like Walmart won’t come to small-town Indiana, private schools won’t either.

But for some reason these legislators are pushing for school privatization under the mask of school choice.

When it started in 2011, only a few kids were eligible for these choice scholarships.

But now a family of four making $110,000 can get our tax money to go to a private school.

Because of it, our kids at Tippecanoe Valley, Warsaw and Wawasee are losing out.

For years, they have been voting for voucher expansion to take money away from public schools. Don’t stand by and let our kids be the ones to suffer.

The state will decide by the end of the week.

Afraid of what in Georgia?

Coca-Cola, Procter & Gamble, Major League Baseball and other companies that object to voter policy in Georgia: Who are you afraid of? The Democrats? The progressive left and right? The deep state? The lefternet social media?

You should be in fear of the people who buy your products, visit your sports venues, and who just don’t care what your CEO’s politics are.

The All-Star game is moving to a state with the same kind of laws as Georgia.

Go fly on Delta if you want to be free from totalitarian rules like showing IDs. They are not going to move out of Georgia any time soon, either.

By the way, CBS is telling people how to illegally get around legal voting laws. That’s treason and insurrection.

God protect those of us with a little common sense.

Buyer, beware Don’t be fooled by all those “Buy gold and silver” ads out there right now.

Gold and silver are at their all-time high. That’s why these people are selling it. They’re trying to make their profit. But you never buy gold and silver when it’s high. You sell when it’s high, and you buy when it’s low.

So wait till the gold and silver gets low, then buy. Then when it goes up high again, that’s when you sell.

Despite the rules a store may have, they can be communicated with kindness and respect rather than accusatory assumptions and combative actions.

Another customer who witnessed the scene said, “If an employee did that on any job site I know, they would be fired.” It was more than one employee behaving like that and with more than one customer. I don’t see the point of threatening and intimidating customers. They will just go elsewhere.

It happened several times within a few minutes, so I left.

Lying about guns and laws

We don’t need the trail sidewalks on Kern Road. If they want to connect the Fox Run, Woodland Acres and Kern Crossing neighborhoods to the trail, do it from the SyracuseWebster Road.

There are utilities on both sides of Kern Road. My neighbor’s lawn was trashed at least four times installing these utilities.

The Biden government just spewed lies about guns and gun laws to the uninformed.

I have been to many gun shows and gun auctions. No loopholes here. Background checks had to be applied, or no guns for you.

Any short-barrel firearm is inherently not as accurate as a longer barrel. A handle or stock does not make you a better marksman on any gun.

We now have 100 million legal, intelligent gun owners in the United States. If we had a gun crisis here, don’t you think, with 400 million guns in the hands of these citizens, lead would be flying everywhere, 24/7?

This is what the deep state Biden government would like you all to believe so they can pass their illegal gun laws. God bless a free America.

We need to jail more guntoting thugs who are shooting up most of our major cities.

You say “Not in my back yard?” Don’t forget the state and federal governments own millions of acres of land, a lot of it in the middle of nowhere — no people within miles and miles.

Let’s start building more prisons to house these violent criminals instead of letting them back into the public for lame reasons like COVID, weren’t violent enough, and “Rehab is just good enough,” and on and on. Build these prisons and pay doctors, psychologists, enough to make a living to maybe rehab these people while serving their full sentences.

Deruntz was among more than 3,000 students who received degrees.

What we do need is the road to be widened at least a foot on each side, not a sidewalk to make it more narrow.

Just a side note: When the elementary school was being built, telephone and internet service was compromised at least three times. And we have at least three rush hours now.

For such a narrow, rough road, that’s not good.

Kosciusko REMC and Kosciusko Connect break ground

Kosciusko Connect, a subsidiary of Kosciusko REMC, has broken ground on their highspeed, fiber-to-the-home internet network. Fiber construction is a multi-step process that begins with an infrastructure overhaul.

“During this phase of our buildout, our contracted crews are paving the way for fiber installation,” said KREMC President and CEO Kurt Carver. “You might see them digging to place cable, changing electric poles, or moving transformers to get our infrastructure ready for fiber.”

Crews will put out red utility flags a few days before they start work in a new location to alert residents construction is coming their way. They will also hang an informational flier on each house’s door when they work in residential areas. The door hangers make sure residents know who is working in their neighborhood and give them a brief explanation of Kosciusko Connect.

“We know that construction projects like this one don’t always look pretty while crews are working,” said Carver. “But our contractors work hard to minimize the impact of this process.

We have a lot of ground to cover, but it is worth the effort to bring reliable, high-speed internet to our community. When you see trucks labeled with Kosciusko Connect and KREMC, it means

Robyne Wirebaugh has been raising hedge hogs since 2013. She became interested in the prickly critters while living in Germany and said she enjoyed interacting with the European hedge hogs.

“They were fascinating to me,” she said.

When Wirebaugh returned to the United States, she got two hedge hogs. Next, she got another one but this time a male in order to breed.

Before too long, people asked her to breed hedge hogs for them. “‘If you get one, I want one, too,’ is what people told me,” she recalled.

She now raises African Pygmy hedge hogs. But hedge hogs aren’t pets for just everybody, she noted.

They are “super poopers,” she explained. “Because they poop a lot.”

And, she said, you have to devote at least 30 minutes a day with them.

This can be holding them, playing with them or putting them down on a blanket while watching TV. They get dry skin easily, and they need to have fish oil, which helps with dry skin. Hedge hogs also have poor eyesight. However, they have good senses, such as smell and hearing that are very developed.

“They are different. They have quite the personality, and they are so unique. They are very friendly as long as you interact and socialize with them.”

Wirebaugh said they are a good pet for some people.

“They are very inquisitive and very fun to watch. Some are even cuddly. They have a lot of personality. They are very outgoing,” she noted.

They do not bite but they will nip at you, Wirebaugh said. Hedge hogs are known for their prickly quills, which are controlled by muscles.

The hedgehog’s back is made up of two large muscles, which control the positioning of its quills. There are about 5,000 to 6,500 quills on the average hedgehog, and these are strong on the outer surface, but filled with air pockets on the inside. When threatened, the hedgehog raises its quills upright in a

crisscross pattern, making its body pointy and sharp.

If you don’t devote time to them, they become aggressive, she said, adding they will make huffing noises. Huffing is a sign a hedgehog is feeling threatened, scared, nervous, or possibly unhappy.

She owns and operates Hedge Hoggle Haven out of her home. She currently has four fosters and seven hedge hogs of her own.

Wirebaugh also is raising little baby hedge hogs, called hoglets.

“Babies are quilling, which is like a toddler losing its teeth; they’ll do that twice,” Wirebaugh said. “I spoil my babies. They are like my kids.”

Hedgehogs are lactose intolerant; rather than milk they prefer

that you to leave out cat food and water for them. Hedge hogs eat a high protein diet.

Female hedgehogs are known as sows, and they will give birth to a litter of up to six newborns, depending on the species of hedgehog.

The lifespan of an African Pygmy hedge hog is three to eight years.

For Wirebaugh, raising the prickly critters is a passion of hers.

“I’m a hobby breeder,” she explained.

Hedge hogs aren’t her only pets.

Purdue Extension hosting ServSafe food safety class Do you own a restaurant or work in the food service industry? Indiana law requires each food service establishment have one certified food handler on staff and this food handler is responsible for all periods of the food establishment’s operation.

To help local food service establishments meet this requirement, Purdue Extension Kosciusko County offers ServSafe classes and exams.

The ServSafe program provides food safety training, exams and educational materials to food service managers. Students can earn the ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification accredited by the American National Standards InstituteConference for Food Protection.

This program blends the latest FDA Food Code, food safety research and years of food sanitation training experience.

Managers learn to implement essential food safety practices

and create a culture of food safety. All content and materials are based on actual job tasks identified by food service industry experts, and this program meets Indiana requirements for food handler certification.

Purdue Extension Kosciusko County will host a one day ServSafe food manager class and examination from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 18. WACF Earth Day Festival set for May 1 Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s Earth Day Festival will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the education center, 11586 SR 13, Syracuse. The event is free and has something for people of all ages.

Guests attending the event will want to stop in at the registration tent to sign in and pick up some goodies before heading out to a number of activities and displays.

Learn about the trails in the Syracuse area with the SyracuseWawasee Trails committee and take a look at where all the trails in Syracuse and Wawasee go.

Ever hear about a muzzle loading gun? The Stones Trace Regulators will provide a muzzle loading demonstration explaining what the gun is, how it’s loaded and what it sounds like when fired.

Do you think all geese and ducks sound alike? Find out with Randy Cesco who will give demonstrations on duck and goose calls. Speaking of ducks, ever wonder where wood ducks nest and what that nest looks like?

Members of Ducks Unlimited will be on hand with a display of nesting boxes and information on what types of ducks can be seen in the watershed.

With the implementation of FEMA’s COVID-19 funeral assistance application process, Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home offers its assistance to the families it served after Jan. 20, 2020, who think they may be eligible to apply for a reimbursement.

FEMA began accepting applications April 12.

Any family, who paid funeral expenses for a loved one whose cause of death was determined to be “COVID related,” could be eligible to apply for a reimbursement

(as long as the expenses were incurred after Jan. 20, 2020).

Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home will sit down with interested families to answer questions about the process and what expenses are eligible for reimbursement; gather the necessary expense documentation; provide resources and links to additional information; and offer support throughout the process “We want to help our families in every way possible — before, during, and after the funeral,” said Ron Redpath of RedpathFruth Funeral Home. “Now that families are able to apply for reimbursement for COVID-19 related deaths, we want to help those families through the application process so they can receive financial relief. We’re grateful to be able to help our families in this way.”

According to the FEMA website, families can submit multiple applications, if there was more than one COVID-19-related death in the family. The assistance is limited to a maximum financial amount of $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,500 per application.

“We’d also like families to know that if they were unable to have a full service because of COVID restrictions at the time of their loved one’s death, they can plan that service now and still request reimbursement,” said Redpath.

Spring lawn equipment: Get ready for backyarding in high style this year Backyarding is the new trend that’s emerged during the pandemic. Our backyards are where we eat, work, play, relax and socialize, and the green spaces around our homes have proven to be vibrant places for connection and vital to maintaining mental health.

So how do you get ready for lots of springtime backyarding? You organize your yard and ready your landscaping.

“Take some time to plan out your yard with your family.

Once you know the purpose you want it to serve, it’s time to start working with it,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing outdoor power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf car and personal transport vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.

“A well-cared for lawn and landscape provides the canvas for a year-round backyarding lifestyle. You’ll want to get out there

with your outdoor power equipment, like your lawn mower and trimmers, as soon as spring arrives, and you want to do it safely,” said Kiser.

He offered the following tips to get lawn equipment ready for spring: Refresh your knowledge.

Read your equipment owner’s manuals and follow all manufacturer’s guidelines. If you find a manual online, save a digital copy for future reference.

Look over equipment. Lots can happen in a garage or storage shed over the winter.

Check the air filter, oil level and gasoline tank.

Watch for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take your equipment to a qualified service representative. Check you have the appropriate batteries.

Drain fuel tanks. If you didn’t empty the gasoline tank before storing equipment, drain it now.

Fuel should never sit in outdoor power equipment for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without

a fuel stabilizer) will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems or damage the fuel system.

Protect your power. Use only E10 or less fuel in gasoline-powered outdoor power equipment.

Most manufacturers recommend a fuel stabilizer be used, especially if you don’t use up all the fuel in the tank right away. Any fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol can damage small engine equipment not designed for it.

Store fuel safely. Label fuel cans with the date of purchase and ethanol content of the fuel. If you

don’t know the date of purchase, dispose safely of the fuel and buy fresh gasoline. Always store fuel out of the reach of children or pets and in approved containers.

Don’t mix up your battery packs. For battery-powered equipment, use only the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another. Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions.

Stash batteries safely. When

the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another.

Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.

Tidy up. Clean equipment will run more efficiently and last longer. Clean equipment and store it in a dry place. Remove dirt, oil or grass. Never store equipment in a place that is damp or wet.

Still looking for the rare birds A friend of my older daughter gave her a picture of a bird, a picture we assumed she had taken while she was on a trip to Florida.

The bird was about the size of a cardinal, we thought, and had a bright red head, face, throat and a crest like a cardinal.

But unlike a cardinal this bird had no black on the face and throat, its back, wings and tail were gray and black and its breast and belly were light gray, dusky. My daughter and I looked for a picture of a bird like that in my many bird books but couldn’t find such a bird.

I didn’t know what that bird was. I didn’t remember ever having seen a bird like it though I may have. I’ve been to Hawaii and this is a bird of South America and of Hawaii where it has been introduced and is called Brazilian Cardinal.

We’ve seen two rare birds on

our property. The first was a male yellow-headed blackbird. It was with red-winged blackbirds in the cattails of the marsh at the edge of our pasture. I didn’t have to look for a picture of that bird.

Yellow-headed blackbirds nested, with red-winged blackbirds, in cattails around many of the lakes near my home in northwest Iowa when I was a boy.

A rare bird is a bird that is few in number or out of its normal range. That yellow-headed blackbird in our pasture marsh is the only yellow-headed blackbird I ever saw in Indiana. It was certainly a rare bird in Indiana.

I called friends who are interested in birds and told them of this rare bird and some of them called more people and for a few days there was a line of cars going slowly on the road past our marsh, stopping frequently, windows down, people with binoculars in the cars staring out the windows on the side of the car where the marsh is. We also had a great egret in our marsh for a few days once, wading in the shallow water.

Another rare bird, not at my home but just a mile and a half

away, was a great kiskadee. The great kiskadee is a bird of Mexico and South America. They are seen occasionally in the U.S. in south Texas. But none had ever been seen as in Indiana nor anywhere near as far north as Indiana, before that one was seen.

I was called and told of the great kiskadee near my home soon after it was spotted.

I drove, hurriedly, to the place that bird was seen and found several cars parked by the side of

the road, people standing by their cars, staring through the binoculars.

The kiskadee is named for its call, kiskadeekiskadee-dee.

It was easy to find the bird. I saw it within a very short time after I parked and I returned and saw it several more times. Then it was gone.

I’ve seen bald eagles and I saw and identified a golden eagle in northwest Indiana. That sighting was doubted by the man-

I’ve seen a whooping crane. I’ve seen Kirtland’s warblers an endangered species, as are some of the other birds I’ve named.

I’ve seen saw-when, snowy, barn, great horned and borrowing owls. I’ve looked for but never seen a great gray owl. But I still get out and about, still looking for birds I haven’t seen.

Fish and chicken benefit to be held May 15 West Hastings and Country Island schools will hold their joint semiannual benefit fish and chicken fry from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 15, at Claywood Event Center, 13924 N. 1100W, Nappanee. The center is located on the county line between CR 1350N and CR 56.

The dine-in meal, which has been held for 20-plus years, includes fish and/or chicken strips, scalloped potatoes, cole slaw, homemade bread, coffee, lemonade, pie and ice cream.

Carry-out and drive-thru meals include fish and/or chicken and sides.

The meal is a popular one in the area. “We get very good reviews,” said Lamar Hochstetler, promoter for the event. “People love the fish fry and chicken meal and we get lots and lots of repeat guests from all over. We have people still coming here who were here from the beginning.”

The event will also include a bake sale of pies, cookies, cakes, bread and “you name it, we’ll have it,” said Hochstetler.

The Watershed Foundation receives a NIPSCO grant The Watershed Foundation was among 18 organizations to receive the NIPSCO’s 2021 Environmental Action Grant. The foundation received $5,000 toward the Smithsonian Water/ Ways exhibit.

In its sixth year, NIPSCO’s Environmental Grant has donated $370,000 to date, helping 92 projects come to fruition across northern Indiana. This year’s projects include multiple wetland restoration projects, launch of Conservation Buddies, continued support of pollinator habitats and corresponding education programs, a restoration project and support of a Smithsonian exhibit about water/ways.

“NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Grant is an integral part of our commitment to strengthen and support partnerships with organizations improving the quality of the environment and this program helps fund those projects that might not happen otherwise,” said Rick Calinski, NIPSCO director of public affairs and economic development. “Working together with the communities and conservation groups in our territory, we’re working to be a leader in the preservation, protection and restoration of critical habitats and to help make a positive difference in the places we call home.”

Pierceton Police Cadets hear from FBI Special Agent %\ /$6&$ 5$1'(/6 6WDII :ULWHU Pierceton Police Cadets had the opportunity to attend a presentation by FBI Special Agent Billy Little April 11.

The 12 cadets are juniors and seniors from area high schools: Warsaw, Whitko, Wawasee and Tippecanoe Valley, along with one home-schooled student from North Manchester.

Little, from the Federal Bureau of Investigations Indianapolis Field Office, has been with the bureau since 2017 and works as a bomb technician. Prior to his employment with the FBI, Little spent 20 years in the Navy, working as a bomb tech.

According to Little, there are 56 FBI field offices throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

During the presentation, Little shared with cadets the necessary requirements to gain employment with the FBI, along with information about training, salary and areas of investigation, which fall into one of two sections: criminal investigations or national security.

The national security section includes counterterrorism and counterintelligence.

“Ever since 9/11, the FBI has really put a lot of focus on counterterrorism because we had terrorists on our soil planning a huge, huge attack and somehow information didn’t get spread around right and the attack was successful,” Little said. “So the FBI has put a lot more investment in personnel, training, money into counterterrorism.”

Terrorism involves both international and domestic.

International terrorism includes criminal acts committed by individuals or groups associated with foreign terrorist organizations.

Little used Al-Qaeda and ISIS as examples of international terrorist groups.

Domestic terrorism involves individuals or groups such as “KKK or some of your ANTIFA that are committing violent crimes, different racially motivated extremists”

whose roots do not come from overseas.

Little has been assigned to the Joint Terrorism Task Force. The task forces are the front line of defense against international and domestic terrorism.

“I don’t know if you’re aware, but in this part of Indiana, the northeast part of Indiana, around Fort Wayne and Kendallville, we have a huge, huge population of people who have migrated from overseas, especially from the Middle East.

We have approximately 10,000 people, refugees, just from Burma.

We have thousands of people that are from Yemen, people from all over,” Little said. “That doesn’t mean they’re terrorists – they are not. These are just people from all over the world, but terrorists like to sneak their way into these pockets of people and migrate in and so our job is to find the bad ones, so that’s what we do.”

The first JTTF was established in New York City in 1980. There are now about 200 task forces throughout the U.S., including at least one in each of the FBI’s 56 field offices, along with hundreds of participating state, local and federal agencies.

Little referred to local law enforcement as “the eyes and ears of the community” and said FBI agents could not do their job without the help of local law enforcement.

“We heavily rely on our state and local partners,” Little said.

The Pierceton Police Cadet Program is for students interested in a career in law enforcement and the different aspects associated with law enforcement at local, county, state and federal levels. The program includes monthly meetings with presentations on policerelated topics such as CSI, traffic accident investigation, paramedic service, fire service, death investigation, community policing, S.W.A.T. and bomb squad.

Pierceton Police Chief Tim Sammons is the cadet class moderator, Pierceton Police Officer Ryan Piper is the police advisor for the male cadets and Pierceton Police Officer

Ashley Jones is the police advisor for the female cadets.

Each cadet was carefully vetted through a seven-page application that includes a background check.

Students selected for the program have a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

The cadet program, which began in 2019, is hosted by the Pierceton Police Department and is the only police cadet program offered in Kosciusko County.

Sammons said it is his understanding Camp H.E.R.O., hosted by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, is expected to take place this year and KCSO is interested in having the cadets serve in junior counselor positions.

Discussion has taken place between Sammons and some of the school principals to determine when to bring the current cadet class to an end. He emphasized even if a decision is made to end the current cadet class at the end of April, the opportunity to participate with Camp H.E.R.O. and at other events will still be available.

The ride was held as a fundraiser for the widow of Brent D. Gordon, an Army veteran who was a member of American Legion Post 223 in Syracuse. Gordon served in the military from 1972-74 and was in the reserves until 1978. He passed away Jan. 8, 2021.

“We want to make it annual ride,” said Bob Juarez, director of the Nappanee ALR. “People want to do it again.”

The ride raised about $750, include a $100 donation from the Syracuse post and a donation from Paul Pinney, who won the 50/50 raffle and returned his $275 winnings for Gordon’s widow.

Riders were charged $10 each to participate in the ride.

Juarez expressed special thanks to the Nappanee and Bremen police departments and Wakarusa Fire Department for clearing traffic for the caravan. He also thanked the city of Nappanee for donating the fencing for the outdoor beer garden.

Officers of the Nappanee ALR are Juarez, director; Mitch Grevenstuk, assistant director; Sally Juarez, treasurer; Linda Grevenstuk, secretary; and Andrea Maxfield, historian.

Nappanee’s American Legion Riders sponsor a public dinner the third Friday of each month at 5 p.m. until sold out at the Legion post, 201 W. Lincoln St., Nappanee.

Juarez issued an invitation to join the ALR. “Anyone who is member of the American Legion, Sons of the American Legion or Legion Auxiliary and owns his or her own bike of at least 350cc can join.”

Jan Vermeer is another most famous artist %\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 *XHVW :ULWHU The Dutch Golden Age artists included some lofty figures, such as Rembrandt and Frans Hals.

Not so highly esteemed during his life, Johannes (Jan) Vermeer is today lauded as one of that elite group.

He was not impoverished as his work was moderately successful, but like many other artists his work grew in reputation and recognition after his death.

If you will notice in his painting, “The Milkmaid,” the setting is very similar to almost all of his paintings. One will often see furniture and accessories from his home in many of his portraits. Vermeer married a Catholic woman, who had a wealthy mother.

Some of his paintings took a religious bent after his conversion at the urging of his mother-in-law.

Vermeer was not a prolific artist.

His work was precise and carefully crafted. Only 34 paintings are recognized as his work, although some authorities say that number should be 66.

Like Rembrandt, Vermeer began to collect art by other artists.

He also became a dealer, but still did not become wealthy, in spite of his in-law leaving his family in

Some of his paintings took a religious bent after his conversion when Vermeer and his family moved in with his mother-in-law.

His wife bore him 15 children, which surely contributed to the family financial struggles.

In 1654, the city of Delft experienced an enormous explosion that crippled the economy and added to financial woes for many citizens, including Vermeer.

Vermeer was known for using only the best supplies, including very expensive colors and paints, including the lustrous blue, lapis lazuli, you can see in his “The Milkmaid” masterpiece. He sold fewer works than the average artist because he charged more than the average for his finished paintings.

During this time in his career, Vermeer joined the art Guild of Saint Luke and was elected head of the guild within a short time. He was re-elected for several more years.

Questions have arisen over the years regarding the use of optics, such as curved mirrors, the camera obscura, and another device called the camera lucida. Many great artists of this era were accused of using these tools to help enhance and increase accuracy of their paintings.

After his death, art historians included Vermeer as one who may have used such tools in spite of the fact that no evidence, including the equipment, exists to support this theory.

Disaster hit the Netherlands in 1672 with another economic failure followed by the French Army invasion, the Third Anglo Dutch War from England and lastly an attack from the Germans. In 1675, Vermeer became ill and died. His wife claimed all this coupled with paintings that did sell and a family he could not support, tragically claimed his life. Nevertheless, Vermeer left a beautiful legacy of masterpieces for the world to enjoy.
