While COVID put a damper on many events and programs last year, Sheila Wieringa, recreation director, continued to put together programming that included take home kits and videos to go along with an activity. This month she was thrilled to bring back a new spin to a popular summer activity.

During the summer, the department held a scavenger hunt with close up pictures of sculptures or buildings around Warsaw. Once an individual or family discovered the location, they could send a photo of them next to it to the parks department.

“It’s just another version of that and that went over really well,” Wieringa stated. In March it became a leprechaun hunt.

The leprechaun hunt began March 1 and went through March 17. Leprechauns were placed in the front windows of more than 30

participating downtown Warsaw businesses. Community members were encouraged to get out and find the leprechauns at each of the businesses, take a selfie with the leprechaun and send it in to the parks department.

With upcoming plans for events around Easter, Memorial Day and then summer, Wieringa thought this would be the perfect time for another scavenger hunt, particularly with the weather starting to warm up. It is also the perfect way for family and friends to adhere to safety guidelines while still getting outdoors to do something together. “It just gives people something to look forward to,” she commented.

The best thing about the scavenger hunt is it is all inclusive.

Participation costs nothing except some time hunting for leprechauns. Wieringa mentioned they had already received more than 100 photos from families and knew of at least six families participating who were sending in multiple photos throughout the hunt.

Dobbins remarked, “I was really quite thrilled the parks department reached out to downtown merchants.” Wieringa got a list of businesses from the Kosciusko County Chamber of Commerce and she and other members of the parks department went door to door asking each business to participate.

The business then got to hide the leprechaun in the front of their building and choose their

own design.

Dobbins was glad to see families out and about together participating in the scavenger hunt while also making people more aware of downtown businesses. She looks forward to possible future opportunities working in collaboration with the parks department.

Wieringa has been glad to see this program encouraging the community to get outdoors and get moving. She is excited to be able to help get people outdoors to “have some fun but still stay safe.”

%\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 6WDII :ULWHU Sina Locke joined the Salvation Army after meeting her husband, Ken. The two serve as corps administrators for the Salvation Army of Kosciusko County.

Locke explained a corps administrator is an employee of the Salvation Army rather than an officer. “As an employee, we have the same responsibilities as a ranked officer, I just have not been to the Salvation Army training college,” she said.

She and her husband were interested in serving in a leadership position together and were assigned to the Kosciusko County Corps two years ago. Unlike officers in the Salvation Army, who are relocated every few years, corps administrators are not.

Ken had served in the Salvation Army as an officer for a number of years before leaving and working in social services and ministry in the Warsaw area for 25 years.

Locke worked as an administrative assistant at Grace College for 16 years before becoming a corps administrator. She came to the Salvation Army through her husband.

“Ken’s a pastor at heart and his desire to go back to the pastoral and we wanted to serve together,” she explained.

One of the pluses is the Lockes could stay in the community they’ve lived in since the 1980s.

“We can network better, working with other agencies. With that we feel we have an advantage,” Locke explained.

“My heart has been in helping others grow in their faith,” she said. Her gifts of organization and administration, planning events and communication have come in handy in her new role.

“I wasn’t very prepared to be a pastor’s partner. The Salvation Army values women in leadership roles. Women have held all ranks including generals,” she said. She wasn’t prepared for the emotional side of the job. “I have to trust God. We can offer programs and opportunities for people to grow, but we

That comes from the Holy Spirit,” she said.

The Warsaw Corps has done well during the pandemic. It did need to shut down for a few weeks in November when the Lockes and their administrative assistant all came down with COVID. As soon as they were healthy enough to open back up, the Christmas season was upon them. “It was a very different Christmas. We were stunned by the outpouring of giving for the Kosciusko community,” Locke said.

During the pandemic the Salvation Army’s offices have been closed to the public as has its food pantry. A drive thru pantry has been offered. “We’re doing a lot over the phone, email and text,” Locke said. “Some of our older residents don’t have email.”

The Salvation Army does have some funds for COVID relief, but with the offices being closed and having to use technology to assist people, it hasn’t been easy.

“It’s harder to help them. You have to work at it and they have to work at it,” Lokce said, adding one of the problems she’s run into is trying to get documents to people who need help and don’t have email.

The Lockes are working to grow the Salvation Army’s ministry in Warsaw. “We’re trying to grow. We’re trying to develop more children’s activities … ,” Sina said. She and her husband have their own home in Warsaw and don’t use the parsonage located next door to the church.

So they’ve been preparing the house to be used by interns from Grace College this summer who will be assisting with Sunday school, youth nights and other youth focused activities. The interns will be seminary graduates or upperclassmen.

The Warsaw Corps has adopted Lincoln Elementary School. The Salvation Army auxiliary and church has supported the school through prayer. “We just love supporting them and praying for them,” Locke said.

The Salvation Army is excited about Easter. A light brunch is being planned with individualized food items being provided.

“I feel really grateful to be here even in such a time as this,” Locke said.

She and her husband have a blended family of seven children with 11 grandchildren.

Stand against House Bill 1005 We need advocacy for public education. Please contact your elected officials and respectfully ask they oppose HB 1005 (School Choice).

It is intended to privatize education in Indiana, and although it increases funding, it will give one-third of education dollars to the voucher program.

It expands vouchers so families making up to three times the limit to qualify for reduced-price school meals — which is over five times the federal poverty level — would become eligible for vouchers in 2022-23. For a family of five, that’s $170,274 a year, more than three times the median household income in Indiana.

Schools receiving vouchers are permitted to deny enrollment to students for any reason. Reasons for discrimination include disability, divorced parents, or a family member who is a member of the LGBTQ community. It’s not the families who ultimately “choose,” it’s the private schools.

are state tax dollars that go to people who don’t send their kids to public schools like the rest of us.

Vouchers hurt rural schools in Indiana because we don’t even have the ability to get our kids to a private school.

I don’t know about you, but I have a job and pay my fair share of taxes. I couldn’t even get my kid to a private school if I wanted to. They don’t have a bus, and they expect students to be picked up and dropped off at certain times.

Indiana has the biggest voucher program in the United States. Meanwhile, our state can’t seem to find enough money to give public schools an increase of anything more than just inflation every year.

Chautauqua-Wawasee is holding the seventh annual Wawasee Oakwood Fine Arts Festival June 12. This year’s festival will feature more than 30 artists. The festival is outdoors in a park set600 ting, with attendance of 400-600 people.

Booth space applications for artists are now being accepted. All art will be “juried.”

Applications are also being ac-cepted for musicians to perform during the festival. Local singers and musicians may apply.

Free community dinner in Pierceton A free community dinner will be March 18 in Pierceton.

When COVID 19 hit, the committee knew they had to step out of the box and bring dinner to people. The committee has had three very successful drive-thru dinners in the past.

The dinner will be a drivethru format from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Catholic church parking lot in Pierceton. Come early, as food runs out rather quickly.

The menu is sloppy Joes, green beans and chips. People may fill their carry-out containers to take and eat.

Pickled eggs Good neighbors: Here’s to the reader wanting a pickled egg recipe. Grandma’s pickled eggs: 18 eggs. Syrup: 1 c. beet juice (drain from 1 pint pickled beets), 1 cup sugar, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 teaspoon salt. Carefully place eggs in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a hard boil.

Remove from heat, cover and let stand for 12 minutes. Remove from pot and add to a bowl of ice water. Peel and place in a half gallon jar. Drain the juice off the pickled beets. If you don’t have a full cup, add water to the beets and shake the jar a bit to get more juice. In a small saucepan, mix together beet juice, sugar, vinegar and salt. Bring to a boil. Pour hot syrup over eggs and refrigerate. Shake the jar a couple times a day so the eggs are pickled evenly. After three days, the eggs are ready to eat and will keep up to one month.

This is a recipe someone requested for pickled eggs: 1 dozen eggs, hard-boiled and peeled, 2 (16-ounce) cans pickled beets, 2 cups cider vinegar, 4 cups water, 1 cup sugar (or more to suit taste).

Put eggs in a gallon bowl with beets on top, draining liquid off beets into saucepan. Add vinegar, water and sugar. Bring to rolling boil, remove from heat and cool. Pour over eggs and beets and refrigerate a couple days for nice red eggs.

To the person wanting pickled beets and eggs recipe: 2 cups vinegar, 3 cups sugar, 2 cans sliced or whole beets, reserve juice, 1 heaping tablespoon pickling spice, 6 eggs, hard-boiled and peeled.

Combine sugar, vinegar and 1 cup beet juice (add enough water to make a cup if not enough juice).

Heat until sugar is dissolved then cool. Put beets and eggs in covered glass jar; pour cooled liquid and spices over them. Refrigerate when cool.

Keeps three to four months in fridge. Can add more beets and eggs as wanted, no more liquid.

Ready to eat in four days.

Pickled eggs: 12 eggs, boiled (set aside). In a large saucepan combine: 2 cups granulated sugar, 2 cups white vinegar, 2 cups water, 2 regular sized cans of sliced beets. Bring to soft boil. Remove from heat. Add peeled eggs. I store mine in a gallon ball jar in the refrigerator. Any covered container works. The longer you let them “soak,” the more pickled they will be. (Seven days, if you can wait.) After the first dozen eggs are consumed, the pickle juice will pickle another dozen, just throw them in.

Pickled eggs and beets: Combine dark red beets and juice, about 2 cups of apple cider vinegar, a little salt and enough sugar (lots) to make

a good “sweet-sour” taste. Heat to boiling point.

Put peeled eggs in a container (maybe a crock) and pour hot beet mixture over them and keep in a cool place for at least four to five days. Note: Cook eggs the day before and have them ready to peel before preparing the beet mixture. Beets may be “canned” or pre-cooked. If not, just cook for a few minutes when the beet mixture is being prepared.

Here is a recipe a friend gave me and I like them so much: 1 can beets, drained. Mix liquid, 1/2 cup sugar, a little over 1/8 cup vinegar and several shakes of salt. Bring to a boil, add beets and heat for a few minutes. Chill overnight. You might want to add a little more vinegar. To make pickled eggs, drain the juice from the beets, add hard-boiled eggs and leave them set for a couple of days. Enjoy!

Former 4-H’ers share how roots in 4-H led to success %\ '(% 3$77(5621 (GLWRU ,Q &KLHI “Deep Roots Yield Success” was the theme for the 2021 Kosciusko County’s annual Extension Meeting held virtually Monday evening, March 1.

The keynote speakers were four former 4-H’ers who have used their 4-H experience for success.

Speakers were Beth (Sans) Van, Chicago, a former Syracuse resident and Milford Helping Hands 4-H’er, now residing in Chicago; Lauren Klusman, Warsaw, a former Silver Lake Rambling Farmers 4-H’er; and Madelyn Zimmerman, Milford, a former Milford Helping Hands 4-H’er.

Van was a teacher and found a need for balance between teaching and her daughter’s school schedule. She stepped away from teaching and used her interest, talent and passion for sewing to start an online business, HavenHandMade. com, in September.

Sewing was one of the 4-H projects during her 4-H tenure. “It is something that would stick with me my entire life and has had an impact on my life,” Van said. She noted 4-H gave her skills important to her and had it not been for 4-H she would not have learned to sew at all. “It was something I enjoyed … it clicked with me and was a creative outlet.”

She said what she learned in 4-H and through the project judging process taught her to

/$7(67 ,'($ ³ Using her 6-year-old daughter as an example, Beth (Sands) Van, who grew up in Syracuse, has created a doll using an applique to resemble the child, as one of her offerings in her online business.

The business features every day items she sews and sells, using the sewing skills she gained through 4-H. discern between well done and just done. “I’m very grateful for the experience I had in 4-H. Sewing is one of the examples that benefited me long past my 10 years in 4-H.” Klusman after high school went on to Indiana Wesleyan University where she majored in graphic design and photography and is now marketing and communications manager for Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce. Five to six years into 4-H, I found I was passionate about it (photography) … got me out of my shell.” She noted learning leadership, responsibilities of meeting deadlines and pressure at a young age, is something she has taken with her as she became an adult.

Zimmerman, who has won numerous awards because of her 4-H and agriculture experience, is a sophomore at Kansas State University studying agriculture communication. It was through the livestock project she fell in love with animals and the people who supported her. In three years she had a lot of success and had started her own beef herd. But when an incurable fatal disease hit her herd, having to put down a large number of that herd, she started on a unique path, as a sixth-grader.

She discovered there was no one her age who understood how she felt about agriculture at school at that age. Realizing there were others who were not understood and finding things

“Ag is my passion … I intend to work with an agricultural company talking to producers about why they do it and what they are doing … filling the gap with correct information.”

Zimmerman wants to give back to those who helped her during her 4-H tenure. “I would not be who I am today without people investing in me I want to pass on the knowledge to the next generation what 4-H has taught me.”

Students and Warsaw Meadows residents form friendships Grace College’s SERVE team recently launched a new pen pal program pairing Grace College students with residents of Warsaw Meadows, a local nursing home.

The outreach allows students to form meaningful relationships in the community without any physical contact.

“With all the complications of the year, it’s important for us as college students to see people in the community who are hurting in ways we cannot understand,” said Julia Myers, SERVE officer and Grace College student. “We value community at Grace, and many individuals in nursing homes don’t have a sense of community right now. It’s our goal to encourage them and share the hope we have in Christ. He is the constant when all is crazy.”

When students returned to Grace College’s campus this fall, they knew student involvement activities would take on a new form.

But the Grace College SERVE

team, led by Jacob Sturdolf, was determined not to let the circumstances keep them from serving the community. After much brainstorming, the pen pal outreach program was born.

To date, 20 Grace students have signed up to be pen pals. Myers explained the students aren’t the only ones who will be doing the encouraging, “There is so much insight to be gleaned from those who are older and wiser than we are,” she said.

One student, Harper Nolander, a senior education major, agreed.

Nolander got involved as a pen pal because of the impact several nursing home residents had on her when she was young.

“When I was a little girl, there were three special people I would visit at the nursing home. They had a special impact on my life,” she explained. “I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to be alone in the nursing homes right now

due to COVID. The least we can do is write a letter to show someone they are loved and cared for. Jesus wants us to care for others, and this is one way I can do that,” she said.

The Warsaw Meadows residents are equally excited about the new initiative. Warsaw Meadows Community Liaison Moriah Young had the privilege of delivering the first round of letters to the residents Friday, Feb. 26.

“Our residents were overjoyed to receive personalized letters,” said Young. “I could tell the letters made them feel very special, especially those who are in the dementia unit,” she said.

Myers hopes as more students express a desire to be pen pals, they will be able to expand to other nursing homes in town.

The rare bird alert is something of the past W r i t e about the rare bird alert, my younger daughter suggested at a family get-together when I said I needed a subject for an article. “But the rare bird alert is no longer active,” I said.

“Then write about what it used to be,” my daughter said.

The rare bird alert. It was a way birders let each other know about a rare bird. Whenever a member of a rare bird alert saw or was told about a rare bird, he or she phoned designated other birders and told them. They then phoned certain other birders and told them.

I could have used the rare bird alert last January when I saw the flicker I thought. I was sitting at the dining room table eating breakfast and watching the birds flying in and out to the feeders outside the window, of course, when a flicker flew in and landed on the peanut bird feeder. I had never seen a flicker in northern Indiana in winter before nor had I ever seen a flicker at a bird feeder, certainly not a peanut feeder. Flickers don’t eat peanuts.

The flicker didn’t stay long, just seconds, but it shouldn’t have been there at all. It should have been somewhere well to the south. But there it was, a rare bird in winter in northern Indiana.

There was a time when I would have initiated the rare bird alert, phoned other birders and told them about the flicker. I’d have invited the birders I called to come and see the flicker and the birders I called would have called other birders who were members of the rare bird alert.

watching is to see rare birds, especially species we have never seen before. Getting together to see a rare bird is also a time to socialize, to visit with other birders, to boast about any rare birds each of us has seen recently.

A bird few in number is a rare bird, of course. A bird out of its normal range is also a rare bird. The most rare bird I ever saw, probably, was a bird out of its normal range, far out. It was a great kiskadee.

This is a bird of “south of the border,” a bird of Mexico. A few live north of the border, in extreme southern Texas.

A great kiskadee is a strikingly marked and colored bird. It has black and two white stripes on the top of its head. Its bill is black and it has a black line through each eye.

Its back, wings and tail are brown.

Its breast and belly are bright yellow. Its slightly smaller than a robin.

I saw a great kiskadee in northern Indiana, about a mile and a half from my home. It was the only great kiskadee ever seen in Indiana, the only one ever seen that far north, or east.

Two rare birds I’ve looked for but failed to see were mangrove cuckoo in Florida and Colima warbler in the mountains in southwest Texas.

My memory of the search for the mangrove cuckoo is very aggravating. I met a man with bilocular, assumed he was a birder, which he said he was, and asked him if he was looking for a mangrove cuckoo.

He said he was and he had seen one “right over there, just a few minutes ago. But it flew just before you got here.”

The rare bird alert is something of the past. In its place, I have the computer internet. I get more reports, one or more every day, and I get more information over the internet.

But I miss the personal contact of the rare bird alert.

Most famous artists, part three %\ '$5/$ 0F&$0021 *XHVW &ROXPQLVW Jan Van Eyck was from the Netherlands. He was born sometime close to 1395 in Maaseik, an area that is now part of Belgium.

Like Seurat, his life was shortlived. He died July 9, 1441.

Van Eyck was credited with utilizing and perfecting some techniques of oil painting that gave it more luminescence and vibrancy. His masterpiece, “The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb,” was the elaborate altarpiece in the Cathedral at Ghent. Installed in 1432, this piece is famous. Not only is it a spectacular creation, but it is known as the most stolen artwork in history. It was stolen seven times.

Adolf Hitler was one of those thieves. He ordered it to be seized because he believed it to be a coded directory to many other valuable artworks and relics of Christianity. It was stolen by his troops during World War II. This complex work of art is made up of 12 panels depicting biblical figures and events. Some Calvinists were the first group known to have stolen it when they made away with it in 1566. The next successful theft came from Napoleon’s troops in 1794. It was stolen three more times in history, the final time by a U.S. Army group called “The Monuments Men” who

were assigned to save art that had been looted by the Nazis. The piece is enormous, which makes it even more remarkable it could be stolen and not recovered immediately after each theft. Measuring a huge 14 1/2 feet by 11 1/2 feet, it weighs an unbelievable 2 tons.

Earlier in his artistic career, Van Eyck worked for John of Bavaria, the Count of Holland. Van Eyck was employed from 1425 until the count passed away. The following summer Van Eyck was requested to serve Philip, the Duke of Burgundy, who offered an enviable position for Van Eyck since he was considered to be the most powerful ruler and aristocrat who fostered art in Flanders. This was sure to keep Van Eyck busy and doing the thing he most loved — painting and creating art.

Van Eyck’s work included more than art, however; he was deployed on many secret missions.

One of those missions was to negotiate marriages on behalf of the duke. Part of those trips included the request for Van Eyck to create a portrait of the one possibly to be betrothed. The duke wanted to see the merchandise before he bought it.

Van Eyck’s loyalty was rewarded and he was able to purchase a house in Bruges and marry a wife who would bear him two children.

This famous artist continued to support Philip, including more

April is cemetery cleanup in Milford April is cemetery cleanup month for cemeteries in Van Buren Township. Those cemeteries are: Mount Pleasant, Bowser Road and CR 250E; Salem, CR 900 and CR 200; and Milford Cemetery, CR 60.

Mount Pleasant and Salem are owned and managed by Van Buren Township Trustee’s office.

Milford Cemetery is owned and managed by the Milford Cemetery Association.

All decorations not secured on the foundations or headstones will be removed and disposed of by cemetery maintenance personnel after April 15. Any faded or torn decorations will be removed by cemetery maintenance personnel regardless of location on gravesite.

Therefore, if you have items you want to keep, remove them before April 15. There will be a dumpster at Milford Cemetery located by the tool shed on Roy Auer Drive for disposal of trash. Decorations/ trash at township cemeteries must be taken off site. New decorations may be placed after May 1.

Perennial plantings must be maintained by lot owners. Leaf bearing trees, shrubs and bushes should not be planted. All

gravesites must adhere to cemetery rules concerning placement of decorations and plantings. Shepherd hooks are prohibited. Encroaching on another burial space is not permitted.

For the purpose of mowing, gravesites should be clear of anything that would hinder the ability of maintenance crews to mow and trim around foundations. As always, cemeteries should be respected as sacred places of burial and as a cherished reminder of loved ones.

Community groups will be doing trimming around foundations at Milford Cemetery the week before Memorial Day services. Volunteers are welcome. More information will be coming as to date and time.

OBITUARIES Doris Elaine Whitehead Retired Factory Worker

Doris Elaine Whitehead, 89, Syracuse, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2021, at her home.

She was born March 15, 1931, in Chicago, Ill., to Galen and Lillian (Zamastil) Lehman. On July 14, 1951, she married Richard (Dick) Whitehead.

Surviving are her husband, Richard, Syracuse; sons, Barry (Debra) Whitehead, Syracuse, '25,6 (/$,1( and Brett Whitehead, New Paris; grandchildren, :+,7(+($' Cory Whitehead, Illinois, Casie (Billy) Bontrager, Goshen, Dustin (Heather) Whitehead, Syracuse, DeeAnn Whitehead, Millersburg, Mindy (Kevin) Park, Goshen, Bryce (Ali) Whitehead, Goshen, Matt (Ashley) Whitehead, Goshen, and Samantha (Nate) Steffen, New Paris; step-grandchild, Reagan Nyce; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceding her in death are her parents; sister, Dorothy Lehman; son, Craig Whitehead; and daughter-in-law, Diana Whitehead.

Doris was a 1949 graduate of New Paris High School. She was a farm wife and a factory worker (KMC) until retiring in 2001. Doris was an active member of the New Paris Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed activities and parties with her Sunday school class. Doris loved having her family gather together and spending time with them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very generous and outgoing to her family and friends. Bowling, euchre, cooking and eating at the Fashion Farm were some of her favorite things.

Visitation was held two hours prior to the noon service Monday, March 15, at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen. The service was live streamed through rrefh.com website; click on Doris’s tribute page and then click on photos/videos. Pastor Stan Godfrey officiated and burial followed at Solomon Creek Cemetery.

Report shows improving conditions at Winona Lake Limitless Park A recent report suggests changes made at Winona Lake Limitless Park are improving both water quality and safety conditions for visitors.

In 2017, The Watershed Foundation brought together community partners to implement an integrated solution to health and safety concerns at Winona Lake Limitless Park. Problems included a crumbling seawall, diminishing water quality caused by shoreline erosion, and public health risks posed by an overabundance of goose droppings. TWF’s integrated approach included engineering a healthier shoreline, engaging and educating the public, and conducting research to quantify any resulting improvements.

TWF’s Executive Director Lyn Crighton shared, “Although all of our projects benefit the community by reducing pollution and protecting water quality in our lakes and rivers, this one was extra special.

It was amazing to see the community come together with 15 different partner organizations and hundreds of volunteers of all ages in support.”

The work began in early 2019. The old seawall was removed, and glacial stones were installed along 500 feet of shoreline to slow wave action.

Cherry Creek’s streambanks were stabilized, and a buffer of native shrubs and plants was incorporated along the stream and the shoreline to discourage geese activity, among other benefits. In addition, TWF launched a public education campaign that included hands-on ac-

Photo provided. tivities and signage throughout the park, informing residents and visitors about healthy shorelines and encouraging clean water behaviors, such as not feeding waterfowl.

Among other positive outcomes of the project, there has been a notable reduction in goose activity. A recent report from a three-year study conducted by the Lilly Center helps quantify the impact.

The Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams collaborated with TWF on their restoration project by studying conditions in the park before, during, and after the work occurred.

The Lilly Center research team surveyed for goose droppings across the grassy portion of the park. Goose droppings offer an understanding

of whether or not geese are spending time there, and are also the main concern for the health of the lake and those who recreate in it.

The Lilly Center found significantly fewer droppings (56%) along the shoreline after the restoration than there were before.

“As the plants continue to establish themselves along the shoreline, we hope to see these results continue each year,” said Adrienne Daeger, research program specialist at the Lilly Center. “We hope that Winona Lake, the park, and our community benefit greatly.”

Culvert replacements to close SR 15 near Silver Lake Indiana Department of Transportation will close SR 15 in both directions near Silver Lake beginning on or after Monday, March 15 and Monday, March 22, for two culvert replacement projects.

The closure taking place Monday, March 15, will be between Dixie Drive to Dawn Drive.

The closure occurring Monday, March 22, will be in place from West CR 350S to Short Ridge Drive. During the closure the official state highway detour will follow SR 14, SR 13 and US 30.

The culvert replacement project is expected to take approximately one week, weather depending.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski (RInd.) recently announced the 2021 Congressional Art Competition and invited high school students throughout Indiana’s 2nd District to submit their original artwork by Friday, April 16.

“The Congressional Art Competition is always a great opportunity to celebrate Hoosier creativity and help young artists showcase their skills,” Congresswoman Walorski said.

Each spring, members of Congress sponsor a nationwide high school arts competition. Symphony of the Lakes to perform ‘Celebrations’ Symphony of the Lakes will perform “Celebrations,” a pops concert, at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 17, in the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the Grace College campus.

Dr. Ardis Faber will be the conductor for the program, which will also feature local artist Christi Ziebarth painting onstage during part of the performance.

Featured performers will include the Young Artist Competition winners from 2020 and 2021. Graydon Brath, winner of the 2020 competition, will play Bottesini’s “Elegy in C” with the orchestra. Grath, a senior at Warsaw Community High School, has been playing bass since he was nine years old. He has played with youth symphonies in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Fort Wayne.

The 2021 winner, Mark Fu, will play the first movement of Haydn’s “Piano Concerto in D Major.” A native of Chengdu, China, Fu is currently a junior at Culver Academies. He began playing piano at age four.

After moving to Canada, he performed with a number of ensembles in the Pacific North-

west, including earning second place in the British Columbia Music Festival.

Additional repertoire for the April 17 concert is rich and varied. It includes Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” excerpts from Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” Gershwin’s “American in Paris,” “Gabriel’s Oboe” from The Mission, and selections from “Les Miserables,” Henry Mancini and more.

The concert will not be livestreamed, and attendance is limited to 400. Masks and social distanced seating will be required. Tickets are $10 each and will be available at the door the night of the concert or you can purchase in advance at the Wagon Wheel box office or online at www.wagonwheelcenter. org.

The non-profit Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts encompasses four programs: the professional theater, Center Street Community Theatre, Wagon Wheel Jr., and the Symphony of the Lakes. KBOR hosts annual Boots for Scholars program For the eighth year, Kosciusko Board of REALTORS partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana and hosted a drive-thru for 25 Littles and Bigs. The Boots for Scholars event was Saturday, March 6.

KBOR presented the children and their adult partners involved in the Big Brothers Big Sister’s mentoring programs each with a gift bag full of treats, a $40 Shoe Carnival gift card, and a $10 gift card to McAlisters.

“Having the Kosciusko Board of REALTORS sponsor Boots for Scholars is instrumental in supporting the success of our Littles in Kosciusko County,” said Jessica Shaw, Kosciusko development director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of NEI. “As an agency, we have a mission to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.” ”We want kids to focus on being kids and dream about a big future,” she continued. “Boots for Scholars is a day that lets us celebrate our kids by allowing them to get some new shoes and a free lunch, relieving a burden from families.”

TVSC to host building project input meetings Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation will host two building project/community input meetings in March. The opportunity is for community stakeholders to learn of the upcoming multiphase building and renovation projects, as well as the future vision for the Tippecanoe Valley High School campus.

Representatives from Fanning Howey Associates and Baker Tilley will be on hand to provide details of architectural planning

and financing for this tax neutral project.

After the presentation, TVSC administrators will facilitate the community input as they collaboratively work to fulfill TVSC’s vision of doing whatever it takes for students to be successful today, tomorrow, and beyond.

The TVHS building project/ community input meetings will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 18, and Tuesday, March 23, in the TVHS Commons.
