Recently Ferrell connected with Tracy Furnivall, the executive director of the Baker Youth Club, offering to do STEM programming while introducing club members to robotics. Ferrell had a few trial runs in November and December to see if club members would be interested in learning about robotics. The club members were really excited. “The excitement of the first grade kids was ‘wow,’” Ferrell said. “They just wanted to race it all over. over.” The extension office has a classroom set of Sphero robots,
small ball shaped robots that are programmable through an app on an iPad. “What I had the kids do the first meeting was run it (the Sphero) through an obstacle course,” Ferrell said. “The next step is learning how to do block programming using some serious math.” The first meeting was held at the club Monday, March 7, and Ferrell had 22 club members, 11 kindergarten through second-graders and 11 third through eighth graders. Ferrell and his program assistant, Tammy Boggs, worked with each age group for about an hour. He also noted both age groups had about the same number of girls to boys participate. “We have enough the kids can work with an individual robot,” Ferrell explained. During the first meeting, some club members were familiar with using an iPad or had done some coding before, while others hadn’t had that much experience but were eager to try. Th nextt meeting The ti g will ill be held Monday, March 21, where
Ferrell will again set up an obstacle course and instead of operating the robot remotely, they will learn how to do coding so they can instruct the Sphero how to go through the course. “There’s a lot of guess and check work and hypothesis work involved,” Ferrell said. “That’s the next stages we’re working on.” He said he expects the younger kids to do more guess and check work and spend more time honing in on their guess work while he expects the older club members to catch on a bit faster. “You have to make an educated guess and then figure out if you went too far or not far enough (in the course). It’s a reasoning skill and critical thinking part,” he explained. The partnership between the 4-H program and the Baker Youth Club qualifies as a Spark Club in 4-H. A Spark Club is one meeting for a very limited amount of time, usually for about six hours, and focuses on one subject. Ferrell said he could see this particular Spark Club developing into a full blown 44-H H Club and he he’ss lookingg for volunteers who would be willing to help him make that happen.
“These types of things, this is just o-one part of what we (the 4-H program) have to offer in robotics.” Fer Ferrell said. He hopes exposing children to something like robotics, where they may not have much experience, may help them consider possible career paths or hobbies to pursue in the future. “I love it!” Furnivall said about the partnership between 4-H and the club. “We started a robotics club a few years ago … Then COVID hit so we lost our energy. So with 4-H coming in has been a blessing.” Furnivall said he is always looking for opportunities for different entities within the community to partner with the club. Furnivall also praised Ferrell and his team for the job they’re doing with the kids. “I think it’s fabulous,” he said. For youth who may not be members of Baker Youth Club but are interested in robotics,, theyy should have a parent or guardian contact Ferrell at (574) 372-2340 372 2340 or at adferrel@purdf l@ due.edu.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Allyn Decker is passionate about education, training %\ 7,0 $6+/(< 6WDII :ULWHU While attending Grace College and serving on a short-term missions trip in Liberia, West Africa, Dr. Allyn Decker became interested in education. He was teaching a Bible class in a public school to a large classroom of boys of differing ages. “To my great surprise, they seemed engaged in the learning
and I enjoyed the challenge,” he said. “This experience sparked my interest in education.” He also served as a teaching assistant helping communication students prepare for and review their speeches. “Again, I enjoyed the challenge and rewards of helping people get better at something they initially feared,” he commented. Decker is now the vice chancellor for the Warsaw campus of Ivy

Tech Community College. In 2017 he had been hired as the campus president but a statewide reorganization changed things at the Warsaw campus when it merged with the larger Fort Wayne campus and his title was changed to vice chancellor. He grew up in northern Michigan and attended K-12 grades in Gladwin, Mich., located near the “thumb” portion of the state. Later he earned the first of his four college degrees, a bachelor’s in behavioral science, from Grace College. He would go on to earn a master’s degree in counseling from Grace, another master’s in organizational communication/ training from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in higher education from Azusa Pacific University. And he has a Christian education diploma from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. It was during the summer after his sophomore year at Grace he was on the short-term missions trip to West Africa. Decker later taught and chaired in the communication department at Grace from 1986 to 1997. From 1997 to 2017 he was an adjunct faculty member at Grace and taught organizational communication, business, writing, human resource management and organizational development to traditional undergraduate students and working adults.

our community and build rewarding partnerships.” Building new programs has been a pattern for Decker. He developed and later directed the Orthopedic Regulatory and Clinical Affairs graduate program (from 2011-2016) at Grace College. From 1997 to 2010 he was vice president of organizational development for Lake City and beginning in 2000 and ongoing developed “Lake City University.” Employees were trained in sales, customer service, supervision, leadership and teamwork. There was also a nearly 30-year stint as a contract trainer for Positive Impact Consulting Inc. from 1986 to 2015. Decker provided workshops, seminars and meeting facilitation to several types of industries, including health care, orthopedics, manufacturing and others, in addition to providing long-range strategic planning. He has apparently been one to do more than talk about the importance of public education. Instead, Decker has gone so far as creating programs to give people the training they need to be successful. Some may recognize his name because of his association with the Kosciusko Leadership Academy. He has been the moderator for KLA since 2008. He also serves on the workforce and education committee for the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, the Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation board, and serves on two other committees. In the limited free time he has, he enjoys gardening year-round in the “greenroom” added to his Warsaw home last year. He also enjoys reading and travelling internationally, such as going on a safari in South Africa for one example. Allyn is married to Vicky and they have two married daughters, Aly and Anna.

Grace College Marketing Department earns four gold awards in competition

Clever name
RNA virus
What a clever name. The Speak Out column is slanted to a Republican (stupid, nutty, illogical, false) point of view. People who write in should have to sign their name and what city they are from.
SARS-CoV-2 is a RNA virus that mutates faster than DNA viruses which have DNA as their genetic material, usually double-stranded, while RNA viruses have RNA as the genetic material, usually single-stranded. This is the reason smallpox, which is caused by a DNA virus could be eradicated with a vaccine. RNA viruses mutate so fast vaccines can’t be developed and produced quickly enough to be effective. In addition, just like the flu vaccine, the pharmaceutical labs don’t know which direction it will mutate so they just develop a “best guess.” The risk is a lack of clinical trials, so it’s rushed to market with impunity, and the FDA approves it under EUA where it’s immune from lawsuits. Now if you please, go after Anthony Fauci whose NIH developed COVID with Wuhan and endangered us all.
Like a liberal Naturalnews.com, Feb. 23, published an article by Ethan Huff revealing research being done by Fauci’s NIH with the Bill Gates Foundation and aims to develop a needle-less vaccine that can spread like a virus rather than have to be injected, leaving no way for anyone to remain unvaccinated. The goal is to create a vaccine people “catch” without their consent and without the need for injections. The vaccine would be passed from one person to the next, like a cold in other words. A paper on the subject claims contagious vaccines will be slightly less deadly than traditional injections but not non-lethal; they can still kill. “Some people will die who would otherwise have lived, although fewer people die overall” it further explains. The other issue is there is no consent (for vaccination) from the majority of patients. Let’s just trust science like a liberal.

Grace College Marketing Department recently earned four gold awards in the 37th annual Educational Advertising Awards – the largest, oldest and most respected educational advertising awards competition in the country. Grace was one of more than 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools to submit entries into the competition. “Our team works full-tilt year round to produce excellent, student-centric content that differentiates Grace from other institutions,” said Matt Metzger, director of marketing at Grace. “It’s both an honor and an encouragement to receive this recognition.
We will continue to pursue best practices in marketing, while also pushing ourselves to reach new heights for Grace College.” The judges for the Educational Advertising Awards consisted of a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals. Grace received an award in all eight categories it entered, including social media content, poster, podcast, installations, brochure, student view book, digital video and publication/external. Students studying marketing, photography, media arts, com-
munication, journalism and other related majors at Grace have the opportunity to earn internship credit, build their portfolios and obtain hands-on marketing experience on campus in the marketing department. “We are passionate about students, and we are passionate about effective marketing, so having student interns join our team is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding aspects of our jobs,” said Metzger. “We know that we’re not just training students, we are equipping the next generation of marketers.” To learn more about Grace College, visit www.grace.edu.

ENTERTAINMENT What will you be doing on spring break? %\ $0< 0$11 :&3/ &KLOGUHQ·V 6HUYLFHV Spring break. It all started with the Greek and Roman empires. Partiers celebrated spring as a season of fertility and new beginnings. They celebrated with plenty of food and wine and extravagant pageantry. The Greeks enjoyed flower festivals, and the Romans held horse and chariot races. The Christian celebration of Easter also takes place in the spring. It is always held the first Sunday after the full moon following the March equinox (so, the first full moon of spring). This moon is also called the Paschal Moon, which is the moon associated in the lunar calendar with the Jewish holy day of Passover. The reasons schools around
the world take a break during the spring vary. Some breaks fall during the Easter weekend, and some are meant to give students (and teachers) a reprieve for study or rest. Some families travel, some do service projects, and others stay home and regroup before school begins again. For others, it will be business-as-usual for the parents, and the children will go to camps or to day care of some sort. What will you and your family be doing for spring break this year? Warsaw Community Schools take a break the first full week of April every year. Warsaw Community Public Library will be celebrating National Library Week during that time, as well. In children’s services that week, we will have our in-person story times. Babies and toddlers and their parents meet at 10:15
a.m. Wednesdays in Room C for stories and activities. Twenty-four hour food pantry opens in Warsaw A 24-hour self-serve food pantry was opened recently outside of Bomy’s Authentic Indian Food, located at 1404 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw. The food pantry contains not only foods but toiletry items as well. Bomy’s owner Bomy Singh stated he will maintain the pantry and people who would like food are welcome to stop anytime
of the day or night to take what they need. People who would like to donate food and toiletries to the food pantry may stop and put their items inside the pantry at any time. Singh stated, “This is a great way to share your blessings with others.” There was a food pantry there for a few months earlier destroyed in a storm and it worked quite well with many people using it daily.

Lake City Bank presents The Commitment Award to Kim Hooley Lake City Bank presented Kim Hooley, senior vice president, credit administration manager, with its 2021 Commitment Award at the bank’s quarterly officer meeting. “This award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond in representing the bank, both internally and externally,” said David M. Findlay, president and chief executive officer. “Kim embodies the true spirit of this award.” Hooley started her career at Lake City Bank in 2000 as a credit analyst in Warsaw and has held a management role within the credit
department since 2003. She most recently was promoted to senior vice president, credit administration manager in January 2020. In that role, she manages the credit department, which provides underwriting for commercial loans and commercial portfolio management reporting and tracking. Her teammates who nominated her for the award shared glowing reports of her work, especially in the past two years when she led the charge on the credit side of the bank’s payment protection program loan project. Hooley worked count-
less hours, including evenings and weekends, to make sure the bank’s customers got access to PPP funds and then received forgiveness for those loans, all while still fulfilling her normal job responsibilities and mentoring and developing the individuals she manages. “Every day Kim tackles challenges with a positive attitude and a willingness to help wherever she’s needed,” Findlay said. “She led by example, both managing the process and working long hours to make sure our customers were able to access PPP loan funding.”

Questa, AWS Foundation announce program Disability Awareness Month is celebrated in March. Questa announced a new program in partnership with AWS Foundation to support the need for speech-language pathology services in public schools. Questa Education Foundation and AWS Foundation will provide funding to help students complete a master’s degree in speech language pathology at Purdue University Fort Wayne or Trine University. Selected scholars can receive up to $20,000 during two years in loan funds through Questa. When scholars graduate and work in northeast Indiana public schools as a speech-language pathologistfor five years, 100% of their loan is forgiven. Applicants must be residents of northeast Indiana, ac-
cepted or enrolled in a Master of Science in a speech-language pathology program at PFW or Trine, and intend to work in northeast Indiana public schools. “Speech-language pathologists play a critical role in helping students with disabilities improve communication skills to achieve full and meaningful lives,” said Patti Hays, CEO of AWS Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Questa and reduce financial barriers for more individuals to pursue this rewarding career path.” Questa and AWS Foundation also partner to provide financial support for individuals pursuing a certification, licensure and/or degree in special education. Now in its fourth year, the AWS special education program has funded
nearly 40 students and, to date, 100% of graduates are working as special education teachers in northeast Indiana public schools. “We are fortunate for the support of AWS Foundation and their long-term commitment to solving the need for special education teachers and speech-language pathologists in our schools,” said Liz Bushnell, executive director of Questa Education Foundation. “Questa is focused on meeting the talent needs of our region and partners, like AWS Foundation, help make it possible.” More information and applications for both programs are available at www.questafoundation. org/aws. The speech-language pathology application deadline is March 25; the special education application is open year round.

United Way needs volunteers to read to school-age children United Way of Whitley and Kosciusko Counties is currently recruiting volunteers for Read United. Beginning the week of April 11, volunteers will visit an elementary school classroom in person once a week for four weeks to read a book to children. This is an outstanding chance to share the love of reading with children, said Darren Bickel, United Way president. “We are so excited to return to classrooms,” said Bickel. “Kids need as many positive adults in their lives as possible and Read United is a great way for us to come together.” United Way supplies the books and prompt cards to help volunteers get kids involved and excited about the story being read. United Way is partnering with Warsaw Community Schools and Whitley County Consolidated Schools to focus on kindergarten, first and second-grade classrooms. Volunteers will have a chance to talk about how reading helps them,
both at their jobs and in everyday life. “If you have been wanting to volunteer, this is a great place to start,” said Bickel. “All it takes is somebody who wants to spend time with kids and share their love of reading.” Since 2017, United Way has matched hundreds of volunteers with local classrooms, impacting thousands of children. Read United is one of United Way’s Kids United initiatives. These initiatives are designed to help kids become amazing learners. United Way of Whitley and Kosciusko Counties was formed in January 2021 when the two organizations came together to better meet the challenges of the region. United Way has a strong focus on children, particularly birth to sixth grade, helping them overcome challenges and succeed in life. Volunteers can sign up online at www.uwwk.org. For more information, call United Way at (574) 2692592.

Businesses and individuals recognized by county extension %\ '(% 3$77(5621 (GLWRU ,Q &KLHI Maple Leaf Duck, Creighton Brothers, Barry Ostrom, Sue Martin and Carolyn Frank all have one thing in common. They were all recognized as the 2021 Kosciusko County Extension All Stars at the 2022 Annual Extension Meeting Monday, March 7. Beth Lamb and Amy Irwin, extension board members, presented the award noting the businesses and individuals are valued as leaders within Kosciusko Extension. Maple Leaf Duck has provided ducks for 4-H’ers, opened their test kitchen and served as a tour host for the 2019 National Association of County Agriculture Agents. They have joined extension for 23 years in educating and promoting animal agriculture in Ag Day and Taste of Ag. During COVID, Maple Leaf provided videos for fourth graders throughout the county. Lamb stated if the 4-H Poultry Barn’s breakfast was enjoyed, or a 4-H’er received a 4-H Foundation Scholarship, Creighton Brothers were responsible. During Ag Day they provide baby chicks for fourth graders to hold. The company is a charter participant and sponsor of Ag Day and Taste of Ag. Ostrom was president of the Kosciusko County 4-H Council when COVID hit. Ostrom led, guided and directed the 4-H Council through the detailed process of a limited, in-person general project and 4-H Livestock judging event, while other counties collapsed during the barrage

He continues to serve extension as the co-treasurer of the 4-H council. Martin started with the Elkhart County Extension Homemakers in the early 1980s and held various local, county and district positions. Following the death of her husband, she allowed her extension homemakers membership to lapse. She met Louise Nichols in 2014 at the Kosciusko County Fair who invited her to visit the Knitting Together Club. Martin joined the club and served as its club president, became county vice president, incoming president and now county president. She has served Kosciusko and Elkhart counties in different capacities for about 25 years.
Frank has been a 4-H volunteer for 19 years. She was a 10year 4-H member with the dog project as her primary project. She watched her mom judge dog shows and discussed the shows on the way home, leaving a big impression. As a result, Frank started judging dog shows while still in 4-H and hasn’t stopped. She led the Kosciusko 4-H dog project in 2021 to allow 4-H’ers to participate. Without her time and dedication there would not have been a dog project. The keynote speaker for the evening was Stephanie Overbey, Kosciusko County Community Foundation CEO. Additionally, the evening included a review by the county extension educators.
Sidney Fire Department gets monetary donation toward new equipment GFL Environmental, Hoosier Landfill, recently presented Sidney-Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department with a monetary donation. The company was generous and stepped up to help the fire department keep the community safer with their monetary donation to help with the purchase of new radio equipment for the department. “We are a small volunteer fire department with 20 volunteers who willingly donate our time and energy to serve and protect the residents in our responding area,” said Fire Chief Kevin Wagoner.
Kosciusko County is building a new communication system for emergency services. “There are going to be expenses for new equipment for us to utilize this new system that we do not have enough funding for, due to our small tax base,” Wagoner added. “We would like to thank Hoosier Landfill for helping contribute to the fire department. We continue to look and strive for ways to better serve our community. Every little bit helps and we appreciate their financial support to help with this project.”
