Rodney Fehr, a registered nurse in the Kosciusko Community Hospital ICU, described the most gratifying part of his job as “knowing I made a difference, making people smile and bringing a little light in their suffering and sometimes in their worst-case scenario.”

Perhaps no one summed up the soul of the man better than the anonymous nominator for his DAISY Foundation award. Speaking on behalf of a terminal 82-year-old relative described only by his first initial, the nominator eloquently wrote, “You met L in his infirmity, his frailty, his vulnerability. You met L as he was dying. You fought for his life as if you had known him your whole life.

“You cared for him with comfort and kindness reserved for children coming into this world, not with the inevitability of those about to leave it. You sought to restore health and strength and vibrancy as if you desired to know L as those who loved him knew him.

“Perhaps he knew you most through touch — the touch of caring hands, the touch of a kind voice, the touch of a caring heart.

I am grateful that L, in his last week of life, met Rodney Fehr, nurse extraordinaire. On behalf of our family, thank you, Rodney. In touching the life of our loved one, you touched all of us.”

Fehr commented on the award, “That was an affirmation of God that I am doing the right thing and going in the right direction.”

That direction is 180 degrees from the path addiction had carved for him in the not-too-distant past.

“Five years ago I was living in a tent, in recovery from addiction. I just wanted to die. I had burned every bridge and had a daughter I didn’t see for five years and two grandkids I never saw. I was by myself with my thoughts. My nursing license was suspended because I didn’t go into recovery. Something had to change.”

That’s when Fehr “brought a little light” into his own life. “I went into detox, some pretty deep counseling and lots of group meetings and sponsors. I basically made recovery 100% of my life for a good

Photo provided. couple years. Getting my nursing license back was too far out of reach, but after about a year and a half I had to set some goals and decided to make the move.”

Immersed once again in his labor of love, Fehr remarried “two years ago this March” and eventually moved from that tent into a 4,000-square-foot house in Warsaw.

His relationship is “as tight as can be” with the daughter he hadn’t seen all those years and “all my family relationships are squared away.”

He said he is now “just living day by day” and expects to “kick out another 10 years” as a nurse before retiring. “It’s all about the body holding out,” said Fehr, 59.

“The brain is still working and I love what I do.”

Fehr could be described as antifragile, a quality conceived by author Nassim Nicholas Taleb as “thriving and growing when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorders and stressors.”

“I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie. I like the stress,” said Fehr, “being pulled in different directions where I’ve got to keep it pretty tight and be on my game.

A lot of times I have to make snap decisions in the ICU and I thrive to do my best under pressure.

Basically I’m troubleshooting the human body.”

Fehr has plied the nursing profession since 1994, having worked in Bremen, Mishawaka, Goshen and Wabash and several states, including Michigan, California and Arizona.

Off the clock, he enjoys “hunting, fishing and spending time with family,” which includes four daughters, one of whom is a nurse at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, a son and several grandchildren.

His advice for living a good life: “Do the right thing. Most of us know right from wrong. Sometimes we don’t know what the right thing is, but we always know what the wrong thing is.”

Riots and fear of riots The liberal news continues to report only the things it wants you to believe. They reported the riots this summer around the country were directed at Trump.

Not true. There were riots in Denver, Portland and Seattle.

One of the protestors carried a placard that read they also disdain Biden.

Also, there were 25,000 National Guard in D.C. over concerns of a riot (during the inauguration), and National Guard were also stationed in state capitals around the country, fearing there would be some form of eruption. The reality is there was none in any city, and it was all a waste of time and money.

Unity The new president is elected.

You may not be pleased or agree with the nation’s choice.

It doesn’t matter your race, religion, age, beliefs — we are all Americans. We need to unite and heal this division of our country. We must back this president and unite our country.

Intelligent people do not solve problems by using violence, destruction, riots and other disgusting behavior to solve issues. We must exhibit control.

Look at all the destruction to

our country, your country. Have you thought of who pays for repairs? It’s you — all of us taxpayers. Let common sense prevail.

Let peace begin with you.

What a stench A common response I’ve heard from those who voted for Donald Trump was they held their nose while doing so. I never voted for him, not in 2016 or last year.

Yet I’m still holding my nose.

Where were supporters?

Trump received 74 million votes in the November election.

Biden supposedly received 80 million non-requested, non-verified mail-in ballots.

You have to wonder where Biden’s 80 million supporters were during his inauguration. It was the lowest turnout in the nation’s history. There were numerous gaps in the audience when Biden spoke. It looked like an NFL audience: more empty seats than spectators.

Anti-Trumpers did not like Trump’s personality, but he accomplished more in four years than his predecessors. We will all grow to miss him during the next four years when we view our shrinking bank accounts — higher taxes and income inequality deductions — and the loss of constitutional rights such as free speech and the right to bear arms.

The 64th annual meeting of the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District will have a different look this year. Instead of the typical banquet setting, the meeting will be virtual via Zoom at 7 p.m. Feb. 16.

“We invite and encourage the public to tune in to our annual meeting,” stated SWCD Chairperson David Ransbottom. “It is the first time in 64 years that the event will not be held inperson, but we look forward to greeting the public in this virtual format. We have a great story to share.”

What will the meeting look

like this year? It will include three major components: sharing of the district’s year-end financial report, an overview of accomplishments of the past year and the all-important election of a supervisor to the SWCD board.

Jamie Scott is running for re-election to the SWCD board.

He has been a supervisor for the last 18 years, serving as its chairman for 12 of those years. He has also held state leadership positions for the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, leading as its secretary, treasurer, president, and imme-

Birds as an alternative activity T h e r e were robins in our yard a few days ago.

It’s January.

This is no time of year for robins.

There were five of them.

They were in the trees, flying down to the ground and back into the trees.

Robins are common everywhere in the U.S. and in southern Canada in summer. But in the northern states, including northern Indiana, robins are gone in winter.

They’ve flown south, migrated. To us in the northern states, robins are regarded as a sign of spring, harbingers of spring.

I’ve seen robins in northern Indiana in January before. But I don’t recall seeing them in my yard in January. When I’ve seen them in northern Indiana in winter, I’ve seen a small flock in a woodland, the state park near my home, for example.

Robins are migrants. They fly south for the winter, south of northern Indiana anyway. In northern Indiana, and in other northern areas, robins are regarded a sign of spring, harbingers of spring. Were the robins in my yard a sign of spring? Will spring be early this year?

It’s been an unusual winter.

There’s been very little snow.

There has been cold weather, many days and nights, when the temperature was below freezing, but there have been no extremely cold days, or nights, no days or nights when the temperature was near zero. I don’t recall a single day, or night, when the temperature was as low as 10 degrees this winter.

I’ve seen other birds this winter I haven’t expected to see. Two mourning doves have been coming to my bird feeders this winter.

Not every day, but regularly, often several times a week. Mourning doves, when I was young, were like robins, a sign of spring.

Recently, I was pleased to have two pine siskins on a thistle seed feeder. Pine siskins are finches.

They’re much like goldfinches.

They’re the size of goldfinches and they’re yellow, but with dark brown stripes. They are often seen in small flocks with goldfinches and with redpolls and crossbills.

They nest farther north, in coniferous forests. They are described in my books as erratic winter wanderers. I have seen pine siskins at one of my feeders before in winter. Though they are not a sign of spring they are, to me, seldom seen winter visitors and a sign this is an unusual winter.

There’s a red-breasted nuthatch coming to my feeders this winter. I don’t see it every day but often, usually on days when the temperature is mild. There’s a white-crowned sparrow coming to my feeders this winter, a rare win-

ter visitor and, to me, a sign of a mild winter. If this winter was as severe as usual that bird, I believe, would have flown farther south.

I’ve seen other birds I think of as summer birds this winter. Last month there were a few male redwinged blackbirds coming to my platform bird feeders. No females, just males. But they’re gone now. I don’t know why they were here as late in the season as they were or why they left when they did, presumably to go south.

There are flocks of Canada geese, wherever there is open water, not frozen over, and in harvested fields, particularly harvested corn fields, feeding on fallen grain I presume. My older son heard, then saw a belted kingfisher at a river that had not frozen over.

Robins, mourning doves, pine siskins, a red-breasted nuthatch, a white-crowned sparrow, male red-winged blackbirds, until earlier this month, Canada geese, a belted kingfisher and the usual winter birds, black-capped chicka-

dees, tufted titmice, downy woodpeckers, house sparrows, cardinals and blue jays.

Birds are varied, active, numer-

ous, though not as numerous as they used to be. Bird watching is an alternative to visiting in these days of the coronavirus.

Get involved with Kosciusko Water and Woodlands partnership A new local ionvasive species management group has been created as part of a statewide program to control the spread of harmful invasive plants on land and in water.

Kosciusko Water and Woodlands Invasive Partnership is a cooperative group. It includes a broad cross-section of partners, landowners, natural resource managers and local government.

Founding members are: Peggy Wihebrink, Chapman Lakes Foundation; Jewel Wise, Clayton’s Garden Center; Andrea Baker, Koinonia Environmental Center; Stan Moore, Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District; Caitlin Yoder, Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams; Erica Luchik and Dugan Julian, Southern Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management; Cecilie Keenan, Smalley Lake Association; and Lyn Crighton, The Watershed Foundation.

The foundation owns and operates several unique venues in Wabash County including the Honeywell Center, Eagles Theatre, Honeywell House, Dr. James Ford Historic Home and Charley Creek Gardens. In addition to these five venues, the foundation operates the 13-24 Drive In. Due to performing arts venue closures, the Honeywell Foundation opened the 13-24 Drive In at the end of May to present family “throwback” films to entertain audiences of all ages. KHCH announces McVey is Employee of the Year Kosciusko Home Care & Hospice announces Tracy McVey earned the 2020 Employee of the Year award. McVey began her career with KHCH in 2019 and serves as a home health aide.

This award recognizes McVey’s positive attitude, communication, proactive work ethic, and service to her patients. She is known for going above and beyond her job description and is regularly requested by patients.

McVey is a mom to her 23 year old daughter and her guinea pig, and aunt to two twin nephews in Cincinnati. She enjoys spending time with friends and family when she is not working or studying.

McVey said she joined the Kosciusko Home Care & Hospice

team because she values each and every patient she serves and desires to care for them well. In the past, she had been asked to “tone down” her care, and that did not sit well with her. So she sought out an agency that would allow her to fully care for each patient she serves. She loves she is making a difference for her patients. She also appreciates she, personally, feels cared for and valued amongst her coworkers and supervisors.

McVey is currently in school studying to be a social worker, but said she isn’t going anywhere.

She said, “I’m so blessed and fortunate to work here! I plan on retiring here, then I will probably volunteer so they will never get rid of me!”

Warsaw Community Quiz Bowl back in person Warsaw Education Foundation’s signature fundraising event, the Community Quiz Bowl, plans to return to a live in-person event for 2021.

The competition will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, in the Tiger Recreational Activity Center at Warsaw Community High School. The new TRAC is a large venue that can comfortably accommodate 50 to 60 Quiz Bowl teams.

Businesses, organizations or individual teams of five can join the friendly competition, reconnect with friends and business associates previously isolated by quarantine and earn the traveling trophy, all while supporting the Warsaw Education Foundation’s mission, “to champion academic innovation and excellence in Warsaw Community Schools.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will help provide much-needed funding for classroom grants, academic programs, scholarships and academic excellence recognition programs for students.

Various sponsorship levels are available, from a $300 team entry fee to the $2,500 or above Valedictorian sponsorship for up to four teams. Donors need not participate in the Quiz Bowl. Instead they can sponsor a team.

If COVID restrictions are still in place, the competition will be rescheduled to Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Lakeland Art Association is hosting an exhibit you will want to visit. Unique work and unusual media by Bill Shewman will be available beginning Wednesday, Feb. 3, at the Lakeland Art Gallery, 302 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw.

Gallery hours are from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Masks are needed until COVID restrictions are relaxed.

Shewman studied at Indiana University in the 1960s. He’s been employed as a working artist for the past 30 years. Shewman does a wide variety of creative work.

Included in his inventory are murals, paintings, illustration and very interesting relief prints that are two-dimensional.

Shewman considers these projects as unique disciplines and enjoys the variety of working, and being successful in each.

Perhaps most interesting are the hand colored, line-cut prints he creates. These reliefs are created by first drawing a reverse image on a linoleum block. Using special knives and tools the block is carved away leaving the negative spaces for the final design. Ink is then applied to the block and next it is pressed into high quality paper that results in a crisply delineated print that must dry to prevent blurs or smears. Once the print is sufficiently dry and ready, it is hand colored, burnished and sprayed to keep it colorfast and smudge resistant.

One of Shewman’s works was entered in Heartland Artist’s gallery annual fall exhibit recently.

It was titled “Red” and it won a merit award.

Admission to the gallery and reception are from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 7, and is free. The reception is an excellent time to meet the exhibiting artist in person. You are also welcome to inquire about his techniques or motives and inspiration behind his beautiful work.

Lakeland Art Association welcomes new members; you do not have to be an artist to have an appreciation of art to join as a supporting member. It’s an excellent way to meet other art lovers and enjoy learning new things about art at the same time. You can also request information about classes that are regularly offered for both beginning artists, as well as those who desire more advanced training.

Lakeland also sponsors several events each year giving artists an opportunity to show their work and compete for prizes. Another advantage to Lakeland Art Asso-

ciation membership is the opportunity to place your work for sale in the gallery at a very reasonable commission. Lakeland Art Association also provides a great service to the community by offering evening programs, usually once per month. These programs may be demonstrations by experienced artists, slide show presentations about various famous artists or special techniques. All are interesting and free to attend. Library remains open with resources aplenty The staff at the Syracuse Public Library wants to thank everyone who has remained vigilant by wearing masks, cleaning their hands and not entering the library when sick. As a result of the efforts to continuously clean, run special air filters, along with properly wearing masks, the library has remained open and has had no cases among the staff.

The library is open to anyone wanting to select books and movies and print or use the computers.

Curbside pickups are available and will continue to be available just by calling to say one is coming at (574) 457-3022.

No in-person programs have been scheduled since September in the library, and none will be offered through February. An email newsletter gives current program offerings and information about programming changes.

Challenges Goals give us something to look forward to. Users of the Syracuse

Library are invited to predict how many books they will read between now and mid-October when the library anticipates having some very nice prizes for participant drawings and hopes to host a celebration party. Inform the library you are doing the challenge and record each title that is read or listened to, from the library or not.

A Thousand Books Before Kindergarten is easy. By reading one book a night, you will have read

365 per year. The child will receive a small prize or a book for every 100 books read.

Taxes The state of Indiana is not sending physical resources for 2020 tax filing to any public libraries, which is the place in the past has provided free copies. To order a copy of the forms, leave a voicemail request at (317) 615-2581.

Syracuse Public Library will print forms for 10 cents a page and has a copy of the instructions for use

while in the library.

Federal 1040 forms and instructions are available in both English and Spanish. The IRS says 20% of the people who qualify for the earned income credit do not apply for the money. Economic impact payments also called stimulus money, round one and two, are available to anyone who did not receive their money by filing 2020 taxes on line 30.

There is no other option to apply for the money.

Grace College introduces 11 new degree concentrations Grace College School of Behavioral Sciences is introducing 11 new degree concentrations for its psychology, criminal justice and counseling majors for the fall 2021 semester. These concentrations will provide specialized training for in-demand occupations in behavioral sciences.

“After our program review last year, we recognized that there is an increasing population of students looking for specialized degrees in the behavioral science disciplines,” said Dr. Kevin Roberts, dean of the Grace College School of Behavioral Sciences. “We believe these concentrations will enhance the overall academic experience of our students and prepare them to meet some of the most urgent needs emerging in the field.”

The new concentrations include addictions counseling, child and family counseling, law enforcement, social sciences, clinical and integrative health, sports psychology, industrial and organizational psychology, and child life psychology. There will also be general concentrations for each major to allow students to gain exposure to a variety of topics.

“Studies are showing that life expectancy drops significantly when individuals battle both mental and physical health issues, and I think we are going to see a significantly increasing emphasis on having licensed counselors in primary care offices in the future,” he predicted.

Dr. Kelly Arney, chair of the School of Behavioral Sciences and professor of criminal justice, is eager to see the law enforcement concentration roll out.

“A large majority of our current criminal justice majors are looking to go into law enforcement, so I foresee that concentration being a popular one,” said Arney. “The recent past has demonstrated the importance of having qualified professionals in law enforcement roles, and it’s exciting to think about preparing the next generation of highly-competent and skilled law enforcement here at Grace.”

Miller Foundation awards grant to Joe’s Kids Rebecca Bazzoni, executive director for Joe’s Kids, was recently notified the Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation has awarded Joe’s Kids a $35,000 grant of which $25,000 will be a matching grant.

The $25,000 matching grant is basically a 1:1 match for all new donors and a 2:1 match for all new child sponsors. Through the child sponsorship program

at Joe’s Kids, donors commit to recurring monthly giving increments of $25, $50, $100 or more to help offset the cost of providing therapies for special kids in the community.

Joe’s Kids is a nonprofit pediatric rehabilitation clinic that provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services for children with special needs or developmental delays.

“We are very blessed to have the Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation in our community. This foundation believes in our mission and understands our dedication and passion for serving our children,” Bazzoni stated.

Grace College named top accounting college in Indiana Grace College’s certified public accountant pass rates are the highest ranking of all Hoosier institutions in the “first-time, small program” category. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy report evaluated the 2019 pass rates of 239 institutions nationwide. Grace ranked first in Indiana and 26th overall.

“Our high CPA pass rates have become one of the attributes of our program,” said Dr. Roger Stichter, professor of accounting.

“We’ve seen top scores in the state and the nation routinely since my return to Grace in 2004,” he said.

The Grace College accounting program, with 60 students enrolled, has grown five times in size since 2004. Accounting is part of the school of business, Grace’s second-largest academic school.

The uniform certified public accountant examination is administered to individuals who wish to become U.S. CPAs. Passing the exam demonstrates the applicant has what it takes to be an entrylevel accountant, and therefore, is extremely important to those in

the accounting field.

“Our program is designed to prepare students in every way possible for the exam, but ultimately, it falls on the students to have a relentless work ethic and a determination to succeed. I can testify that those are the types of students that Grace College attracts,” said Stichter.

One such student is Noah Hicks, who graduated in 2019 with a bachelor’s and master’s through Grace’s dual degree program and passed his CPA with strong scores. He now works in Detroit at Plante Moran, one of the largest audit, accounting and tax firms in the nation. “Grace effectively prepares students for the CPA exam by structuring its courses in a way that challenges students and teaches them to learn well. Learning how to learn well is half the battle, and Grace’s accounting program helped me develop this skill,” said Hicks.

Kosciusko County announced county residents are now able to apply for Kosciusko County Area Planning Commission permits and forms, specifically sign permits, property research request forms, or register as a contractor.

Along with that the auditor’s office’s deductions and forms are also available to be applied for online. These include: auditor blind or disabled, auditor change of tax

mailing address form, auditor energy systems deduction, auditor heritage barn, auditor homestead deduction, auditor mortgage, auditor over 65 deduction, auditor vacation request, and auditor veterans deduction.

To apply for any of the aforementioned, you will need to access the Schneider GeoPermit Portal. The portal can be accessed either through the Beacon online GIS mapping service once a property is selected under the “apply for permit” tab or through specific links on associated office pages.

As the system grows and is complete, other permits and forms are anticipated to be available for online submission, including improvement location permits, flood development permits, highway permits and health department permits.
