Students can now apply for $5K work-based learning scholarships
St. Joseph County legislators encourage high school students who want to pursue work-based learning and credentials to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.
State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger) said Hoosier students in 10th, 11th and 12th grades at a state-accredited public or private school can receive up to a $5,000 state-funded scholarship to pursue apprenticeships, applied learning experiences, work-based learning and credentials attainment. About 2,000 spots are available for the 2024-2025 school year and students can apply for a Career Scholarship Account (CSA) until the Oct. 1 deadline.
"These scholarships will open doors for Hoosier students who want to pursue learning experiences outside the classroom and workforce credentials," DeVon said. "These scholarships are on a first-come, first-served basis, so students shouldn't delay applying."
State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty) said accounts are available to high school students who are enrolled in a course or educational experience approved by the Indiana Department of Education. Eligible students will participate in joint career and technical education, modern youth apprenticeships, registered apprenticeships or an Indiana College Core program by an approved CSA-participating entity.
"Hands-on learning experiences can prepare students for life after school and give them a head start in their career field," Teshka said. "I encourage interested Hoosiers to apply for this scholarship, so they can set themselves up for success."
Approved students will receive $5,000 over four disbursements and can use the money toward certain qualified expenses:
• Class expenses for student's apprenticeships/internship program;
• Postsecondary education and/or training;
• Equipment for student's apprenticeship/internship program;
• Certification and credentialing examinations;
• Career coaching and navigation services;
• Driver's license; and Transportation.
To learn more about Career Scholarship Accounts and enroll before the Oct. 1 deadline, visit in.gov/tos/csa, email CSA@tos.in.gov or call 317-232-0723.

South Bend Farmer’s Market to commemorate 100th year
The South Bend Farmer’s Market is commemorating its upcoming 100th anniversary with a large-scale outdoor mural; work started Saturday, May 25, and will continue through the first week of June. The mural is located on the entire west end of the market’s building at 1105 Northside Blvd., South Bend.
Alex Ann Allen is a traveling multidisciplinary artist who grew up near the South Bend Farmers Market and is excited to bring her art to this historic site. The primary focus of her work is portraiture and large-scale geometric murals. Alex is also the founder and lead curator of “Mural Mania,” an annual mural festival that draws artists from throughout the country to her native South Bend.
Alex’s passion and dedication lies in creating public art that brings communities together across America and celebrating neighborhood pride and empowerment.
The South Bend Farmers Market was incorporated in 1924 and continues to offer the same benefits to the community as it did at the beginning: fresh, home-grown produce (fruits and vegetables), dairy products, meats, poultry, eggs, maple syrup, jams, jellies, flowers, handcrafts, artwork, jewelry, gift items and many more unique items. The market is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The South Bend Farmer’s Market is a South Bend landmark that is proud of its history. On July 20, the market invites everyone in the community to its 100th birthday party from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
