Beekeeper finds his work with bees therapeutic %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I believe I became interested in beekeeping for a couple reasons,” stated John Lemasters, Goshen. “In 2011, while living in Virginia, I saw an ad for a beekeeping class at nearby Virginia Tech. At the time I was working as a hospice grief counselor and chaplain. It was the Lord’s work, ministering to the dying and

their grieving families. Yet, it was so emotionally and spiritually exhausting. Keeping bees, I thought, might be a form of therapy.”

Lemasters said his second reason for keeping bees has to do with family heritage. “I’ve been told my father kept bees when I was a babe in arms. Although I have no conscious memory of that, I believe my dad’s interest in honeybees 70 years ago is one

After completing the Introduction to Beekeeping course at Virginia Tech, Lemasters started small. That spring he purchased the necessary equipment and bought two packages of bees.

Each package contained about 3 pounds of bees and a mated queen.

Lemasters admitted to some mistakes that year. He received the first batch of bees in April, and they were dead by November, killed by “my stupid rookie blunders and the early winter cold. Unfortunately,” he confessed, “that year I was a ‘bee-haver’ not a ‘bee-keeper.’ A successful beekeeper’s colonies will survive the cold months of winter.”

After moving to Goshen in 2014 he purchased a nucleus colony. “A ‘nuc’ includes a laying queen, five frames of adult bees, eggs, larva, sealed brood, honey, and pollen.” Lemasters said that turned out to be a much better investment. His bees survived that winter and most of his colonies have survived ever since.

One of the things he most enjoys about working with his bees is the focus required. “When you open up a colony containing 40,000 bees you must be present with them. I’ve learned from experience that distraction will always result in painfully

life-long learner, Lemasters said, “The bees are constantly teaching me something new. I’ve talked to beekeepers who’ve been active for 35 years and all report they are still learning. I also subscribe to two bee magazines.

The articles I’ve read over the last seven years have provided a wealth of information.”

Last year his bees gave him a bumper crop. “I harvested 360 pounds of honey from four colonies.”

Like any agricultural industry, beekeepers are subject to weather and climate for the honey production. “This year the weather near our home was dryer; there was less nectar in the blossoms. Our harvest was down to 260 pounds.”

“Currently,” he explained, “the south side of Goshen is in a drought related ‘dearth.’ Flower blossoms are beautiful but there is simply no nectar in them.

When you see bees and yellow jackets frequenting your hummingbird feeders you can be sure they are lacking natural nectar.”

A retired pastor and counselor, Lemasters enjoys mentoring rookie beekeepers. “It’s a wonderful hobby but there is so much to learn. I would recommend any ‘new-bee’ try to find someone who is willing to assist. I’ve helped several get their start and thoroughly enjoy these relationships and what we’ve learned together.”

Congratulations, “Conspiracy,” which you talked about Trump being “involved in a conspiracy against American democracy, Constitution and rule of law,” you just told more lies in one Speak Out call than anyone before.

There is no such thing as American democracy, we live in a Constitutional Republic. You falsely allude to Russia being behind Trump’s presidency, which is a complete liberal lie.

As for COVID, you lied about Trump being responsible for the Americans deaths. What evidence do you have? None. He closed the international borders to and from China immediately while the Democrats all cried about him being racist. Trump is responsible for the creation of the COVID vaccine.

Too many lies It’s amazing how many lies come out of Joe Biden’s and Jen Psaki’s mouths every single day, in particular about COVID and the vaccine.

Dementia Joe has told us time and time again the “vaccine” (which isn’t a vaccine) is safe and effective, but yet every day people who are fully vaccinated are getting and spreading COVID. A prime example is Singapore. The country is the seventh highest vaccinated rate in the world, with over 81% fully vaccinated. Yet they are seeing a new COVID case rate just as high as April 2020 when COVID was at its highest there.

Joe tells us the vaccine is 100% effective and with his new vaccine mandate, we no longer have the freedom to choose and we are losing more freedom every day.

If you’re an illegal you don’t have to get the vaccine. Americans have less rights and freedoms than non-citizens.

Prominent Republicans who are vaccinated are listed as follows: Former President Trump and his family, Karen and Mike Pence, Mitch McConnell, Marco Rubio, Joni Ernst, Lindsey Graham, Gov. Ron DeSantis (“these vaccines are saving lives”), Mitt Romney, Steve Scalise, Sen. Tommy Tupperville, Coach John Calipari, Paul Ryan, Sean Hannity, Steve Doocy (“get the shot”), Christopher Ruddy and the GOP Doctors Caucus.

They are alive and protected, unlike the unvaccinated who are crowding hospital emergency rooms and intensive care units.

Believing vaccine myths will not protect anyone from the COVID virus.

And, you can’t ignore, no belief in God. People who promote racism keep it alive because it fits their agenda, the agenda of separatism, not unity. It’s a disease. Remember the race riots and turmoil of the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s? Oh, I forgot, most of the troublemakers today, BLM and ANTIFA, weren’t even born yet.

Ever watch small children at a playground? There isn’t any skin color or ethnicity. They know something we don’t.

Mr. Hoffert, a Warsaw Community Schools administrator, recently said, “we all long for normality during this continued time of COVID.” Yet we know medical tyranny should never be normalized. The schools and government must never be allowed to coerce our children and our citizens through societal exclusion. Unmask our children now. Masks are not safe or effective. Stand up for our freedoms and right to breathe.

When our children wear masks they are getting 20% less oxygen and it is affecting them physically and psychologically. Less oxygen is also affecting their brain cells.

What are short term and long term effects on the next generation? This is not about a virus. It is about total government control of the people.

The caller of “Pure lies” claims “There was no evidence of any collusion with Russia in that hoax of an investigation and impeachment.” That’s false.

Both the Mueller investigation and the Senate Intelligence Committee uncovered contacts between the Trump campaign and representatives of the Russian government, contacts that included the infamous Trump Tower meeting and Paul Manafort’s working closely with Konstantin Kilimnik. There was very definitely collusion and the investigators never suggested otherwise.

Also, the caller appears confused about Trump’s having been impeached. Neither of the president’s two impeachments dealt with the assistance the campaign had been given by Russia. Trump should have been impeached for having welcomed Russia’s help, for publicly casting doubt it even had happened, and for obstruction stemming from his efforts to hinder and destroy the Mueller investigation.

‘Local Boy Makes Good,’ 2021 edition

Sam Grewe, a humble 23-year-old Middlebury resident, stood halfway across the world, pelted by sheets of rain, eyeing his final obstacle, one measuring an inch taller than his 6’1” athletic frame.

Harkening back to his years of incessant, disciplined training and summoning the confidence to act and will to succeed, he ran toward the obstacle ... executed a mighty musthave leap with flawless technique ... and landed on the other side of a long dreamt of top-of-the-world experience.

On Aug. 31 Grewe captured the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics high jump competition with a winning jump only 2 centimeters lower than the world record he has held since 2015. “But given the circumstances, particularly the torrential downpour, I can’t complain too much with the result,” he said.

The coronavirus pandemic delayed the 2020 games until this year, presenting Grewe, who graduated from Notre Dame in May, with an additional challenge. “I started medical school (at the University of Michigan) just three weeks before having to leave for Tokyo, which made things a lot more difficult in regard to keeping up with schoolwork and labs and assignments and such.”

But Grewe was never one to back away from hardships, having been diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer at age 13 and opting to have his right leg amputated above the knee in 2012. “It was an extremely difficult decision, but I felt it gave me the best chance of returning to the lifestyle I wanted to live.”

He discovered he wasn’t wrong.

“I’ve never once regretted that decision and I’m extremely confident I’m much better off because of it,” he said.

So he took the tandem demands of medical school and competition training in stride. (No gratuitous pun intended. Grewe himself is known to utter quips of dark humor about his disability, once describing his discharge after a two-year hospital stay, “I felt I was kind of dumped out into the world, one leg down.”) In Tokyo he studied six hours a day, actually finding it “kind of therapeutic,

keeping my mind off other things.”

He plans to compete again at the next quadrennial paralympic games in Paris in 2024, but in the meantime, Grewe will concentrate on pursuing his medical career, a passion sparked by the care he received as a teenage patient. “I got to experience a lot of what goes on in medicine, including behind the scenes. I learned a lot about what it means to be a good doctor, and I felt drawn to a career where I could use those lessons to give back to those experiencing challenges similar to what I faced.”

Always others-directed, Grewe spoke of another impetus. “I saw the underrepresentation of people with disabilities within the medical profession,” he said, “and that was a big driving factor for me, to fulfill that role for somebody else.”

He chronicles how he has been more than compensated for the loss of his leg. “Living life with a new disability has taught me so many valu-

able lessons,” such as “embracing every challenge and obstacle and utilizing them as opportunities to learn, how powerful a positive growth mindset can be and that no dream is too ambitious if you’ve got the heart and dedication to achieve it.

“I can look back and connect the dots and know I wouldn’t be the man I am today if I hadn’t faced those challenges.”

He credits his family, who “has been by my side through it all.

They’ve helped me through the hard times and celebrated the victories with me.”

According to Grewe’s mom, Michelle, “Every day since he and his sister were young, their dad (Randy) would tell them, ‘I love you, make me proud and be a friend to those in need.’ Sam has taken the ‘need’ to heart, and that quote encompasses everything we see in the kids. ‘Love, proud, need’ encompasses who Sam is.”

Library awarded LSTA grant Nappanee Public Library has been awarded a Library Services and Technology Act grant for Voices from Nappanee’s Past, a project that will transform recordings from 8mm film, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, and other multimedia items to digital formats.

These digitized items will be available online as part of the library’s Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection and will be included in Indiana Memory, a database of primary sources from across the state.

This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, administered by the Indiana State Library.

Drivers and passengers can feel confused and unsure of what to do.

Even the most experienced and seasoned drivers can make basic mistakes after they have been involved in a traumatic event.

Simple, avoidable mistakes could cost you time and money, or lead to personal, medical and legal issues.

Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid after a collision: • Fleeing the scene: Leaving the scene of an accident could land you in serious legal trouble. You may be in shock, but the most important thing to do is stay where you are.

Check on your passengers, and once you exit your vehicle, check with the other driver involved in the accident.

Try to remain calm and wait for law enforcement to arrive on the scene. If it is safe to do so, use your cell phone to take photos of your vehicle to document the damage that resulted from the accident while you wait for police.

• Not reporting the accident: Even if it’s just a minor collision, always report the accident to the police. Never let someone convince you to avoid calling the police.

If you decide to make a claim with your insurance company later on, or if you decide to pursue a legal claim, not reporting the accident could hurt your case.

• Exchanging too much information: Do not share your driver’s license or who was at fault with the other driver; however, share this information with the police along with your current insurance.

Always exchange contact information with the other driver, get contact info from any witnesses, and obtain full insurance details from other drivers involved in the accident.

Make sure accurate information is included in the police report, and ask for a copy of the report to edit any incorrect information.

• Failing to get medical advice: You may think that you were lucky enough to escape injury, but you should always get a medical checkup after a car accident, especially if you hit your head.

Remember, only a medical professional can rule out possible head trauma and other serious injuries.

• Having your vehicle repaired at just any shop: You might have to make a decision on-the-spot as to where to have your vehicle repaired. Don’t make a panicked decision when it comes to your safety.

Chamber awarded USDA grant The United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development announced the Middlebury Chamber of Commerce as a recipient of a $50,000 Rural Business Development Grant.

The success of this grant application comes from the strategic direction of the town’s most recent updated 2030 comprehensive plan with strategies outlining enhancing the support for local businesses to grow and thrive and excelling the community’s “maker’s entrepreneurial spirit.”

Middlebury Chamber of Commerce will use this grant award to help create and run the Middlebury Makers Rural Incubator. Strengthening the local economy and the rural entrepreneurship community are the primary goals of the new business incubator.

The Middlebury 2030 Comprehensive Plan, coordinated by the Michiana Area Council of Governments, listed creating a business incubator in downtown Middlebury as one of its

objectives. This grant is key to completing that objective. James Turnwald, MACOG executive director said, “The vision of Middlebury community leaders during the comprehensive planning process helped make the execution and awarding of this grant possible. We hope Middlebury and the MACOG region will be made stronger through these funds.”

Chamber hires chief strategic initiatives officer The Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce has named Cherri Peate the new chief strategic initiatives officer.

In the new position, Peate will oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of strategies for the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors talent connections and entrepreneurship & innovation

priorities. She will serve as a representative for the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce on the South Bend-Elkhart Regional Partnership’s Diversity & Inclusion and Talent Attraction Committees.

In addition, she will author grants in support of GECC’s mission and board priorities and support the VP of communication in marketing GECC, specifically in

areas of social media and video production.

Peate will work closely with GECC’s partnering organizations to connect residents and nonresidents to living and career opportunities in the Greater Elkhart area. Collaborative efforts will also produce the growth of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the community.

Celebrate the season during October First Fridays Find fall among friends at Downtown Goshen’s Harvest Festival Friday, Oct. 1.

The season’s favorite flavors and festivities will be gathered in one place from 5-9 p.m. during October First Fridays — fire pits, pumpkin decorating, a fashion show featuring local retailers, and fall-themed food and drinks.

Children’s activities will include a petting zoo and pony rides.

And First Fridays live music, shopping specials, and beer and wine offerings all fall at the start of Goshen College Homecoming weekend festivities in October, serendipitous scheduling sure to supply more friends and fun.

“Fall doesn’t need any help from us in being beautiful, but Harvest Festival does offer the opportunity to celebrate everything gorgeous — and delicious — the season has to offer with

our downtown community,” Adrienne Nesbitt, event director, said.

“We’re especially excited to share our fashion show live and in-person again after last year’s virtual event, so come out for awesome fresh fashion finds!”

City of Goshen opens sensory trail %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU “Thank you so much to a lot of people,” said Theresa Sailor, Goshen’s Department of Environmental Resilience as she opened the press conference Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 21, announcing the opening of a sensory trail in Goshen.

Sailor explained how the City of Goshen and ADEC came together to create a trail that is all inclusive of the community. “It’s been an amazing trip,” she said.

The sensory trail includes four miles of two existing public trails with open, calm areas, water and natural habitats. A water feature is still under construction and will be added to the trail in the next few weeks.

“I’m very grateful for everyone here today. This is a true community project with people from all walks of life participating,” said Mayor Jeremy Stutsman. He also praised both the Lt. Governor’s and Governor’s office for their support.

He also praised Sailor who took the trail project on shortly after joining the city in its environmental resilience department. The trail was funded through a $155,000 grant.

The trail is named after Ashley VanVurst, a Goshen resident who recently died of Prader-Willi syndrome. Her niece Nicole explained the disease prevents those who have it from realizing they are full at meal times. Expected to live only to the age of 3, she survived until age 49.

As a resident of Goshen VanVurst enjoyed bowling, ballet, Aktion Club, The Shoots day program and attending church.

Naturalist interns cataloged more than 900 features while local computer science students at Goshen College developed an app to provide a guided sensory experience so users can learn, relax and engage through touching, smelling, seeing, hearing and tasting the world around them.

The project integrates physi-

cal and app accessibility features designed to accommodate adults with diverse disabilities, including physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

As part of this project, the city established a lending library of 10 iPads at Reith Interpretative Center to ensure individuals can access the trail app and participate in the complete trail experience.

“The idea is to keep you walking,” Sailor said. “Nothing is tagged (on the trail), you have to find it yourself.”

For those unable to utilize the trails, the project will install three stationary nature web cameras to allow 24 hours access to the natural environment’s sights and sounds. Science has consistently documented the positive benefits of interacting with nature, lower stress, better mood, increased concentration and others.

This project will provide opportunities for safe, interactive outings for recreation or therapy for all.
