Letter to the editor Is this roundabout really needed? Dear Editor: The highway department and local government are pursuing a dogbone roundabout for the intersection of CRs 115, 18 and Middleton Run Road against the advice of residents, paramedics and other emergency personnel. DeCamp Bridge will be closed 18 months inconveniencing the public, first responders, schools, etc. Realignment of public utilities, brand new fiber optics, gas lines, etc., will be costly and ultimately paid by taxpayers. Concord Fire Department mostly responds to health/accident issues and closure and roundabout will slow their response time. Data drives decision making in business and government to provide transparency. Where is the data that indicates this roundabout is needed? Number of accidents? Usage based on times and volumes of traffic? There have been no fatalities at this intersection. Show citizens well defined, unbiased
data substantiating this expensive change in traffic pattern. Two sheriffs are on the decisionmaking boards and their concerns should focus on increased speed as a result of the roundabout and the response time for deputies to emergencies. Officials charged with making this decision are: County Commissioners Weirich, Lucchese, Rogers, and county council members Stump, Yohn, Riegsecker, Graham, Hess, Wenger and Bujalski. Locate intersections with high accident rates, fatalities, speeding and invest our money wisely. Use unbiased data to guide decisions, hold public meetings and seek citizen input before turning the first shovel of dirt. Should residents and our elected officials of Elkhart County resist the spread of major expenditures returning little to the taxpayers?

Continued from page 1 does is serve as a livestock buyers group during the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair auction. Recently Cultivate Food Rescue folded Meat Hunger as a part of the organization as the two founders of Meat Hunger are now attending college. Cultivate Food Rescue purchased 73 animals at the St. Joseph County Fair and had plans to purchase animals at this year’s Elkhart County 4-H Fair, but Conklin said processors are slammed. He said he hopes the log jam will lessen so Cultivate Food Rescue can participate in the Elkhart County 4-H Fair Auction next year. “Our goal is to get an animal that was raised here (locally) and

turn it into protein for people who live here,” he said. Cultivate Food Rescue also has plans for a 4-H Spark Club. Spark Clubs are special interest groups designed to capture the attention of youth with single focus, “out of the box” interests that are likely different from state-recognized 4-H projects. These clubs are led by volunteers bringing their subject mastery to the club. Spark Clubs include six hours of instructional time that can occur in one day or during a length of time. Most Spark Clubs end their program with a culminating event or activity. Conklin said the hope is the Cultivate Food Rescue’s Spark Club would provide ways for

Cultivate Food has also partnered with Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry which provides a way for farmers and hunters to donate large game and livestock to participating butchers for processing. The packaged meat is then distributed to local Feeding America Food Banks and hunger relief ministries. “We’re super excited about the programs and we’re excited about where it’s going,” Conklin said about Cultivate Food Rescue.
