Women’s Equality Day 2021 launches Miami County Women’s Suffrage Trail Marie Stuart Edwards, Suffragist 1880 - 1970

Peru, Indiana - The Peru Public Library is home to a new pocket park where the bronze statue of suffrage leader Marie Stuart Edwards will be dedicated on Women’s Equality Day. The ribboncutting celebration and statue unveiling on Thursday, Aug. 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. will bring welcome attention to the local role of Hoosier suffragists in securing the right to vote for women in 1920.

ReDiscover Downtown Peru is hosting the public dedication with support from partners and donors of the $105,000 historic preservation project. The March for Marie begins at 10:30 a.m. led by Ivy Tech students of American Government and Public Speaking. Free parking is available at the Riverview Event Center for participants of the hour-long guided tour about Marie’s life. Vendors with food, music, and merchandise will kick off the celebration on library grounds at 11:30 a.m. The dedication to Marie with speeches by dignitaries begins at Noon.

Shuttle service sponsored by the Miami County YMCA will return participants to their cars at the event center after the statue unveiling. The project received support from a Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant, a program of the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial presented by Indiana Humanities and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs through funding from the state of Indiana.

“We could not be prouder to recognize one of our very own,” President of ReDiscover Downtown Peru Eric McCoy noted.

“Marie changed the course of history when she gathered women together at our Carnegie library to discuss voting rights and public policy. She held meetings representing the League of Women Voters from offices and in homes along Broadway and Main. So, this pocket park is a special place to reflect on the meaning of service, the significance of legacy, and hope for the future. There is no place quite like it.”

ReDiscover Downtown Peru is part of the Hoosier Main Street program -- but one of only three to receive the Preserving Women’s Legacy Grant a year ago on Women’s Equality Day, the centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment’s ratification.

Tennessee sculptor Cindy Billingsley is commissioned to design and install the bronze statue to Marie. Indianapolis foundry Sincerus as well as Hoffman’s Nursery and Landscaping of Wabash have teamed up with Ms. Billingsley to prepare the statue for the pocket park. Volunteer committees of local 1 residents and community organizations champion the project which is managed by consulting firm AcesPLUS. When revealed on Women’s Equality Day, the statue will join a growing number of monuments to women, including those of Sojourner Truth in Angola and Naomi Bowman Talbert Anderson in Michigan City.

The schedule for the day is as follows: “March for Marie” Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at the Riverview Event Center, 421 E. Canal Street, Peru on the River Walkway. There will be free parking

available at this location for participants of the “March for Marie.” All who participate are asked to wear white to honor suffragists. Free return shuttle services from the Peru Public Library to Riverview Event Center will be available after the statue unveiling.

Masks may be required. Walk in the footsteps of suffragists from across the country who came to Peru under the leadership of Marie Stuart Edwards to fight for the right to vote and the 19th Amendment’s ratification. This is a

guided tour by students of Ivy Tech Community College.

ASPIN awarded $2.2 million to prepare professionals to help families

Affiliated Service Providers of Indiana (ASPIN) is excited to announce we have been awarded 2.2 million dollars over four years to prepare paraprofessionals to work with families who may be coping with physical, mental, and emotional trauma that can lead to substance use and behavioral health disorders.

Health Resource and Service Administration (HRSA) has awarded Affiliated Service Providers in Indiana, Inc. (ASPIN) 2.2 million dollars over four years to prepare paraprofessionals to work with families who may be coping with physical, mental, and emotional trauma that can lead to substance use and behavioral health disorders. This program will include a paid Department of Labor (DOL) certified CHW apprenticeship program.

The ASPIN Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Program for Community Health Workers (CHW) will train participants to provide support for families, children, adolescents, and transitional-aged youth that are at risk for behavioral health disorders, domestic violence, and substance use disorders.

ASPIN will expand existing paraprofessional certificate programs for Community Health Workers (CHW) by adding an Opioid Basics certificate, Chronic Care Paraprofes-

sional certificate and an Opioid Impacted Family Support certificate.

ASPIN will work with six community partners (Centerstone, Four County, Good Samaritan Hospital, Elkhart YWCA, Bowen Center, and Hamilton Center) who serve consumers in the targeted areas.

ASPIN will recruit CHW candidates to enter the behavioral health/primary care workforce as well as provide a comprehensive background for individuals who plan to continue to seek a college degree in human services.

The 11 counties targeted for the program include Bartholomew, Cass,

Elkhart, Fayette, Greene, Hamilton, Hendricks, Knox, Marion, Miami, and Parke.

Linda Sue (Burton) Waymire, 68, of Peru, went to her eternal home Friday, Aug. 13, 2021.

Linda was born in Peru, Indiana, June 28, 1953, to Otha (Hawk) and Walter Burton. In 1971, she graduated from North Miami and Upper Wabash Vocational with a license in Cosmetology. Religion was very important to her, and she attended both Mexico Baptist and Peru Grace Brethren Church.

Linda opened South Peru Hair Boutique in 1984 and was the sole owner until her passing. She enjoyed crossstitching, quilting, painting, reading and entertaining family and friends at home. She married Joe Waymire Sept.

22, 1973. He preceded her in death Nov. 17, 2018.

Surviving family includes two daughters, Becky (Mark) Ross and Sylvia Waymire-Stone. Also surviving are her grandchildren Madison Ross, and Olivia and James Stone.

Surviving siblings are Myrtle (David) Correll, Betty Gebhardt, Geraldine Correll, Kenneth (Patty) Burton, and Jane Burton. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Linda will also be missed by her quilting sisters Judy Dedrick and Nancy Cox. Linda was loved by numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at Mexico Baptist Church, 4088 N. Carroll St., Mexico, Indiana. The funeral service followed at 4 p.m., with pastor Kyle Schnitz officiating. Burial took place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru, Indiana.

Judy Marie Daugherty, 70, of Miami County, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, at Howard Community Hospital in Kokomo.

She was born in Kokomo Nov. 16, 1950, to the late Ralph and Frances Rayls.

She was united in marriage to Kevin F. Daugherty Oct. 9, 1971, at the Bunker Hill Air Force Base chapel. She was a career Air Force wife of 23 years, then did many years as a certified nurse’s aide (CNA). She raised three most wonderful children: daughter Melinda, who married Andrew Bird, and together they had three children, Hope, Charity, and Nehemiah; second daughter Bonnie Sue, who married Don Bales, and they had four children: Faith, Franklin, Ellie, and Ivan; then son Francis, who married Paula, and they had a daughter Emmeline, and a son Sullivan.

Judy also had four sisters and two brothers: Theresa Mohler and husband Larry (deceased) of Kokomo, Sharon and husband Mardie Loshnowsky of Peru, Carolyn and husband Lowell Maxwell of Peru, deceased brother and first wife Ralph and Pam Rayls and surviving second wife Marie, brother Tom and Debbie Rayls of Burlington, and also surviving is youngest sister Joni who married Jim Davenport of Peru. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Judy loved her church, loved her family, and adored her grandkids.

She was truly a remarkable wife and mother, who knew how to keep the peace and keep it straight. It was a hard job, and she did it remarkably well.

A service celebrating the life of Judy Marie Daugherty was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2021, at Zion Chapel Church in Peru, with pastor Rod Correll officiating. Burial was at Springdale Cemetery in Bunker Hill.

Due to COVID-19, the family requested only family members attended the service.

Robin Clutinger, 69, a resident of Peru, passed away Thursday, Aug. 12, 2021, at Summerfield Healthcare Center, Cloverdale, Indiana, a facility for people with Huntington's Disease.

Robin was born in Louisville to Leonard and Mary Clutinger.

On Oct. 27, 2001, Robin married Barbara Bradfield.

Robin was an industrial engineer for Square D, he was active in the circus band for many years.

He enjoyed his music.

He was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife Barb of 20 years., a sister, Mary Lynn Atherton (Dave) of Palmyra, son, Adam Clutinger (Cathy) of Indianapolis, daughter, Erin Clutinger (fiancé, Dan) of Portland, Oregon, stepson, Jason Bradfield (Brenda) of Peru and stepdaughter, Heather Ousley (Robert S.) of Peru. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Robin was cremated, and there was no visitation or service.

Carol Sue Hoover, 82

Carol Sue Hoover, 82, of Peru passed away at 2:32 a.m., Monday, Aug. 16, 2021, at Howard Community Hospital in Kokomo.

Born Aug. 26, 1938, in Peru, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Helen (Ebey) Donaldson.

On Sept. 11, 1955, she married Jim D. Hoover and he survives.

She was a lifelong homemaker and was a member of the First Church of Christ.

Carol enjoyed her time as a seamstress for the Peru Circus for many years. She loved spending time with family and most of all her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Jim D. Hoover of Peru, children, Jeff Hoover (Kathy) of Akron, Kathi Greene (Joseph) of Peru, Jim Hoover (Sue) of Peru and Kristi Wittenberg (Tim) of Galveston, brother-in-law, John McKee of Bunker Hill. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son, Michael Hoover, sisters, Della McKee and Diana Donaldson and Phyllis D. Hand, 93 brother, Mike Donaldson and his wife, Karen.

Obituaries Linda Sue Malott, 69 Linda Sue Malott, 69, Denver, Indiana, passed away Friday morning, Aug. 20, 2021, at Visiting Nurse Hospice Home, Ft. Wayne.

Born April 29, 1952, in Peru, Indiana, she was the daughter of Noah E. Wolf and former Betty A. Landis.

She attended North Miami Schools and had worked for many years at Gallahan’s Truck Stop where she had been a waitress and worked in the convenience store. She loved to sit at her home out in the country and watch the world pass by from the comfort of her front porch. She enjoyed going to the casino, taking care of her yard, cooking, and baking, and finding any excuse to run around without her cellphone. More than anything, she was a dedicated mother and grandmother who loved all of her kids.

Survivors include two children, Tony (Angie) Malott, Denver; and Troy Malott (Brandi Williams), Akron; six grandchildren, John (Susie) Malott, Florida; Amanda Marshall (Justin Whalen) , Kokomo; Madison Malott, Macy; Tori Malott, Macy; Hope Malott, Wabash; and Drew Malott, Wabash; six great-grandchildren, Maverick Malott, Lily Marshall, Kennedy Marshall, Landen Whalen, Devon Agee, Marcus Agee; two sisters, Ellen (Jerry) King, Peru; and Lana (Bryan) Jaberg, Peru; half-sister, Mary Canaday, Indianapolis; former daughter-in-law, Carol Malott; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by one son, Todd Malott; one granddaughter, Baley Malott; and one sister, Carol Joseph.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, Indiana. Burial followed in Gilead Cemetery.

John Albert Smith, Jr., 81 John Albert Smith, Jr., 81 of Peru passed away at 1:42 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2021, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

New Year’s Eve was made extra special on Dec. 31, 1939, when John Albert Smith, Jr. was born to parents Nancy Julia Smith (nee Johnson), and John Albert Smith, Sr. John was born and raised in Owensboro, Kentucky, and graduated from Western High School.

John enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1959, and his exceptional math skills landed him in Accounting and Finance, where he spent 20 years creating and managing multiple payroll systems for military personnel, contractors, and civilians throughout the U.S. and the world. While stationed in Thailand in the early seventies, his frustration with an antiquated civilian payment process inspired him to design a cutting-edge, computer-based payroll system, an effort which earned him the Bronze Star. After retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1979, John immediately became a “double dipper,” and spent the next 22 years as a civil service employee, doing the exact same job he retired from! When John was 14 years old, he got a job as a pinsetter and fell in love with bowling. Retirement allowed him to achieve many bowling awards as he competed in military bowling tournaments across the country each year.

He won the Indiana State USBC Class A Singles Title, and in 2016 was inducted into the Miami County USBC Hall of Fame. In 2017 John was named Indiana’s Top Senior Bowler, though he often joked that he would rather have had perfect 300 game than another state title.

John is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Evelyn Brown Jackson Smith, who he married Aug. 18, 1972. Over the years, John and Evelyn enjoyed traveling to his bowling tournaments in places like Albuquerque, New Mexico, Las Vegas, Nevada, Reno, Nevada, Syracuse, New York, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ex-

ploring casinos was a favorite pastime, and they loved attending family reunions in Owensboro, Kentucky, Syracuse, New York, and Anniston, Alabama, spending as much time as possible with family and friends. John and Evelyn were true soul mates and best friends and were married 49 years to the day that he was called home by the Lord.

John is predeceased by his parents John Albert Smith, Sr. and Nancy Julia Smith Bland, his brothers Barry L. Smith and George A. Smith, stepmother Mary Elizabeth Smith, and stepfather Carl Bland.

The family of John and Evelyn Smith would like to acknowledge the ongoing kindness, love, and support of Monroe and Candace Alfrey, Pete and Mary Poppe, and Denny and Bev Cattin. We are forever grateful. Joseph A. Dunn, 62 Joseph A. Dunn, 62, of Peru passed away at 2:49 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born in Peru Oct. 20, 1958, the son of Norman and Marlene Shrock Dunn.

Joseph married Toni Logsdon on May 22, 1982 and she survives.

Joe graduated from Maconaquah High School in 1978 and was a member of Loree Brethren Church. He worked at Progressive Rail as a Teardown Operator. Joseph loved going to classic car shows and spent his spare time riding his motorcycle. He was also an avid Purdue fan and treasured going to his grandchildren’s sporting events.

Joe is survived in addition to his wife Toni by his sons Derek Dunn and his wife Chrystal of Washington, Illinois, and Travis Dunn and his wife Alexis of Peru; his grandchildren Maliyah, Kaden, Peyton, Raelynn and Aubrey Dunn; his parents Norman and Marlene Dunn, a sister Julie Dunn of Monticello, Indiana, and brother Steve Dunn and his wife Beth of Peru.

When she declined, the male took the items and left the

Charges will be filed as he left prior to the caller reporting.

A juvenile at 6530 N St. Rd. 19, Denver reported a battery from father. This is an ongoing investigation.

Firearms were reportedly stolen at 5851 S U.S. 31, Cedar Creek Mobile Home Park, Lot 42, Peru. A case report was completed.

A missing person report was made at 3208 Schilling St, Peru. The child was located in an upstairs bedroom sleeping behind a closet door. A DCS report was made.

A report of a trespass was made at 1480 W Thunderbolt Ave, Faith Community Church, Peru. The complainant pointed out the suspect was

walking away upon officer arrival. The suspect was ordered to stop several times.

The suspect charged a sheriff ’s marked vehicle with emergency lights activated several times and punched the vehicle, causing damage. The suspect also attempted to strike a sheriff while seated in the vehicle and issued threats to kill the officer. The suspect continued to walk toward the Grissom Inn against orders to stop. As the subject reached the Grissom Inn, a taser was deployed, incapacitating the suspect until additional officer units could reach the area to put him in custody. The suspect was charged with resisting law enforcement, intimidation, two counts of criminal mischief, and criminal trespassing.

A case report was completed.

A male subject at 275 W 12th St, Dukes Hospital, Peru accidentally sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

Mobile Home Park, Lot 17, Peru for an individual found unconscious in a residence.

Indiana State Police handled the investigation.

No indications of burglary were found.

A caller at 7233 S U.S. 31, Mara Mart, Bunker Hill reported being struck by gravel falling from a County Highway vehicle. No damage was noticed. Caller requested documentation in case damage was noticed later.
