U-Knight-ing a community Southwood fans, county residents cheer team’s historic effort By Joseph Slacian jslacian@thepaperofwabash.com The reaction of the community following the Class A State boys basketball championship was evident: Win or lose, the Southwood Knights are still champions in their hearts and minds. Throughout the contest at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Southwood faithful stood and cheered, hoping beyond hope that a miraculous comeback would be at hand. Sadly, it wasn’t. The Knights fell to Morristown, 89-60. But that didn’t matter to the contingent of fans that braved a Central Indiana snowstorm to attend the Saturday morning contest. When Carson Blair was announced as the recipient of the Ray Craft Mental Attitude award winner for Class A basketball, the northwest corner of the fieldhouse erupted with cheers. Likewise, as the players, coaches and school officials were announced one by one to come to the makeshift stage at center court to receive their second place medallions, each received a rousing cheer from the crowd. Blair receives Mental Attitude Award By Josh Sigler jsigler@thepaperofwabash.com INDIANAPOLIS -- There was a silver lining in Saturday’s Class A state finals. Despite the Southwood loss, Knights Senior Carson Blair was named the Ray Craft Mental Attitude award winner for Class A basketball.
“It’s just incredible,” Blair said said. “There are a ton of 1A schools, and for me to get it is just incredible. My teammates come out and helped me and we keep level heads. It’s amazing to get that award.” According to the IHSAA, the award is annually presented to a senior participant in the state finals who best demonstrates mental attitude, scholarship, leadership (continued on page 3)
