United Way meets 114% of goal for 2020

While we reflect on how much was accomplished, we know there's still more to do.

New Year is the perfect day to dream of a brighter future for Miami County. The United Way for Miami County is proud to announce their 2020 Campaign total of $177,800, surpassing the campaign goal of $155,000 by $22,800 and the 2019 campaign by $10,800.

When the campaign began in August during this unprecedented year of pandemic, with industries laying off, local businesses struggling, job losses, and uncertainties, the Campaign Cabinet knew the needs would be more this year. The Cabinet challenged their volunteers to meet as many of those needs, as possible.

Our theme this year was “People Helping People Funding Solutions.� 2020 was a challenging year for everyone in our community. But Miami County stepped up and responded to the unprecedented need and gave us hope for a better tomorrow. The generosity of so many people, both with time and monetary gifts, shows that the people of Miami County have big hearts and are willing to work for everyone's health, education, and financial stability in Miami County.

Thank you to all the People Helping People, Funding Solutions for Miami County. The funds will help us meet our vision and enhance the lives of all Miami County citizens.

United Way of Miami County will provide direction and accountability to promote education, income, and financial independence to all citizens in Miami County in 2021.

Baby Emma Rain born early into New Year PERU, Ind. (Jan. 1, 2021) – Dukes Memorial Hospital is happy to announce the first baby born at its facility in 2021 arrived Friday at 4:19 a.m. Emma Rain is the daughter of Daniel and Heather.

Police Reports Miami County Sheriff ’s Department Dec. 26 A complainant at 3697 N 100 W, Peru, reported someone tried to gain entry through the front door of the residence. Subjects were unable to make entry. Case report made.

A suspicious male was reported in driveway near 9338 S 400 W, Bunker Hill. Damage to front left was found. Unable to locate the male.

An animal problem was reported at 1104 W 200 N, Miami County Jail, Peru.

A traffic accident with damage was reported at W St. Road. 218 and N Foreman Dr, Peru.

A suspicious person or vehicle was reported at 4990 W Logansport Rd, Peru.

Fireworks were reported at 304 E Sycamore St, Converse. Ignitor advised to forgo any further celebration for the evening.

Dec. 27 Erin Bales of 257 E Second St., Peru, was arrested for failure to appear.

Stacey Wright of 563 N 800 W 27, Converse, was arrested for resisting law enforcement misde-

Obituaries Landin C. Hicks, 86 Landin C. Hicks, 86, of Peru, passed away at 3:07 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020.

He was born Oct. 2, 1934, in Newcomb, Tennessee, to Albert and Ethel Martin Hicks.

He married Ines C. See July 13, 1956, and she preceded him in passing.

They had three children: Landin M. Hicks (who also preceded him in passing), Timothy L. Hicks (Tina) of Kokomo, and Sandra D. Corn (Howard) of Twelve Mile; as well as six grandkids. Also surviving are brother Melvis Hicks (Barb) of Hoover, and sister Azaleen HicksBaker (Ernie) of Peru.

Landin was also preceded in passing by five broth-

ers, and two sisters.

He worked at Guildcrest Furniture for 30 years, until they closed. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post #15, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2688, and the Moose Lodge #249.

Freedom Miller, 45 Sept. 1, 1975 — Dec. 27, 2020 Freedom passed Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, after a ninemonth battle with cancer.

He not only had a strong love for his family, but he had a passion for cars and his Harley. He loved working on just about any vehicle big or small.

Freedom is survived by his loving wife, Mary Miller, his dad Robert Miller, two children Ashley (Eric) Hiers and Cody (Katie) Ramer. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Alyssa and Coltin Hiers and Wesley and Ensley Ramer. Also, two

Tina Sharon Emerson Wagoner, 75

Tina Sharon (Emerson) Wagoner went to Heaven to begin her eternal life with Jesus Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020.

She was reunited on this day with her husband, William R. Wagoner.

She was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Aug. 14, 1945, and was raised by her mother, Mary Edna Quillen, in Logansport, Indiana.

She married William March 29, 1964. They had three children Brent (Susan) Wagoner, Mark (Tifani) Wagoner and Beth Bunnell. Pat was born in Hamtramck, Michigan, July 31, 1943, the daughter of Eugene G. McDaniel and Betty Jane Cook McDaniel. She married Harry Smith June 3, 1967, and he preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2013. Surviving is a brother Roy (Laurie) McDaniel of Panama City, Florida; a daughter Christine (Richard) Saylors of Converse; sons Charles (Brandi) Smith of Amboy and Harry (Darsci) Smith, of Amboy and several

aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She will be remembered for her kindness, loving nature, and love for her family. Tina had many special friends she made on her journey through life.

Obituaries Bruce Alan Linkenhoker, 69 Bruce Alan Linkenhoker, 69, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020.

Bruce was born Sept. 5, 1951, to Max D. Linkenhoker and Eileen D. Linkenhoker in Peru, Indiana. He was a 1970 graduate of Peru High School. Bruce worked at General Motors for 36 years as a millwright. In 1983, he married the love of his life, Brenda (Sturch) Linkenhoker.

They had two children, Adam Linkenhoker and Amber Moores, both of Peru.

Bruce loved to hunt, fish, and spend time with his family. He had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need. Bruce was a friend to many, and never met a stranger. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his joy. Bruce attended the Peru Church of

the Brethren and was a life member of the Peru Maennerchor.

He was preceded in death by his mother Eileen, father Max, and brother Jerry Linkenhoker. He is survived by his beloved wife Brenda of 38 years; brother Mike (Shirley) Linkenhoker; children: Adam (Ashlee) Linkenhoker, and Amber (Josh) Moores; grandchildren: Mackenzie Howard,

Marianne Hawkins, born Aug. 10, 1940, in Worms, Germany to Erwin and Emma Kull, went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, after a short battle with COVID-19.

Marianne passed away peacefully surrounded by children. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, brothers (all from Germany), and a great granddaughter, Lauren. Marianne came to the United States in 1962 and did a variety of jobs, including nursing, but mostly taking care of her four children. She was a longtime member of First Church of Christ until she was unable to go anymore. She loved crocheting afghans and giving them to people, just to make them happy.

She is survived by her children, Stefan Hawkins (Peru), Patri-

parents, brothers Ralph Jackson, Phillip Jackson, Charles Jackson and John Jackson and sisters Mildred Hawkins and Mayme VanCleave.

A private family service was held at Noon, Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, at the Eikenberry- Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, with pastor Maurice Reed and pastor Annettia Brooks-Rankin officiating. Family and friends will gather from 10 a.m. until Noon, Monday at the EikenberryEddy Funeral Home.

Burial was held at the Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Indiana. The Service was also live streamed on Facebook at Eddy Funeral Homes, Inc. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home to the Wayman AME church.

Lynda Faye Dixon, 71, of Peru, passed away at 1:38 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru.

Lynda was born Aug. 6, 1949, at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Long Beach California, the daughter of Dwain Glen and Maxine Faye Shinn Haun.

She married Robert E. Turner and he preceded her in death March 29, 2012.

Lynda and Robert enjoyed traveling where Lynda never met a stranger, she would greet you with a warm tight hug making you feel wanted and cherished. She treasured spending time with

George F. Jackson, 85 George F. Jackson, 85, of Peru, passed away at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at his residence. He was born in Kokomo, Indiana, Oct. 14, 1935, the son of Rev. Ralph W. and Augusta Crossland Jackson.

George was a 1954 graduate of Peru High School and attended Grambling State University. He was an Assistant Tech Engineer at Lockheed-Martin Missile and Space Corp.

A man of great faith and integrity, George was an active member of the Wayman AME Church where he had served as a trustee. He was known throughout the community for hosting the annual barbeque at the Wayman AME Church. In 2001 he founded the Wayman AME Church community breakfast which was later changed to the George Jackson community breakfast. George

was the first male cheerleader at Peru High School, and he served on the board of directors at the YMCA. He always had a positive attitude and never had a bad word to say about anybody.

George is survived by a brother, Perry Eugene Jackson of San Jose, California, sister Julianne Bowlds of Las Vegas, Nevada, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his

William E. McCarty, 89 William E. McCarty, 89, Peru, Indiana, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Peru, Indiana.

Born Feb. 20, 1931, in Carrol County, Indiana, he was the son of Alva and Elsie Laverne (McGuire) McCarty.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 63 years, Carol (Wilburn) McCarty, whom he married Dec. 14, 1957; two chil-

dren, Steven McCarty, Logansport; and Lori (Eric) Thomas, Tucson, Arizona; one grandson, Erik (Caya) Walls, Tucson; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Kay) Logansport; and one brother-in-law, Roland “Tom” Wilburn, Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents; seven sisters, Mary Ellen Fouts, Doris Irene Pursch, Wilma Maxine Garrison, Lois J. McCarty, Ruth

Born July 9, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana, he was the son of Bower “Sie” Duboise Day and Rosaleen Ruth (Robins) Day. On June 8, 1963, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, in Peru, Indiana, he was married to Barbara Lee Crume, and she survives.

Bud was a 1959 graduate of Rochester High School. He was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and retired after 33 years from Chrysler in Kokomo, where he was a member of the UAW Local 685.

He loved fishing, deer hunting, Colts football,and all Indiana University sports. He enjoyed spending time at the campground with his wife and many friends and traveling to Florida with the camper to Lake Josephine with his wife for 15 winters. He was a hard worker, a very good father and grandfather, and an excellent husband.

He loved his family very much, and he would go out of his way to help any of them at a moment's notice. He enjoyed being outside, whether in the garden, in the garage, or just talking to someone walking by. Bud was a friend to everyone and never met a stranger!

Survivors include his wife, Barb Day, Chili; mother, Rosie Day, Rochester; two children, Daniel D. (Donna) Day, Mexico; and Donald L. (Jami) Day, Peru; four granddaughters, Katie (Brandon) Hutchison, Lapel; Sara Day (Ryan Hepfer), Lapel; Jamie Day (Collin Loughman), Lapel; Hananyah “Nyah” Day, Greentown; five stepgrandchildren, Mandy (John) Kriegel, Decatur;

Jamey (Kyle) Clark, Evansville; Nathan Ralston (Jacqueline Smith), Allentown, Pennsylvania; Dayne Hartleroad, Peru; and Danielle Hartleroad, Peru; 13 great-grandchildren with another great-granddaughter arriving soon; one sister, Sianna Deeds, Macy; one brother, Robin (Pam) Day, Rochester; and one son-in-law, Eric (Deborah) Saddlemire, Denver.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sie Day; daughter, Ann Saddlemire; and three brothers, Rex, Raymond, and David Day. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Peru, Indiana, with Rev. Adam Mauman officiating. Burial followed in Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru. For those unable to attend, the service was live streamed at www.mcclainfh.co m/livestream.

Visitation was from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, at McClain Funeral Home, Denver, where a Scripture Service began at 5 p.m. An additional hour of visitation was at 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

Masks were required at all times for all visitors in the funeral home.

Kevin John Tuttle, 67, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away Thursday, Dec. 31, 2020, at Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne, as a result of COVID complications.

Born Jan. 6, 1953, in Syracuse, New York, he was the son James Casper Tuttle and Ruth E. (Wagner) Tuttle. On March 12, 1983, in Pulaski, New York, he was married to Yvonne Lorraine Brooks, and she survives.

He was a graduate of Pulaski High

School, New York, in 1972. He moved to Rochester, Indiana, in 1993 to work for Rochester Metals, where he retired in 2015 as the maintenance superintendent. He loved

Jesus with all his heart and was a member of New Song Community Church in Plymouth, Indiana. He was a devoted husband, dad, and papa, spending as much time as he could with family and often crafting awesome meals for his family to enjoy together. He enjoyed cars, traveling, crossword and Sudoku puzzles, Colts football, Golden State Warriors basketball, and bowling-something he especially enjoyed with his two sons.

Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Tuttle, Rochester; daughter, Tammy (Derek) Moyer, Springhill, Florida; Daniel Tuttle, Rochester; Brock (Ashley) Tuttle, Alexandria; 10 grandchildren, Brandon Moyer, Travis Moyer, Ciarra Tuttle, Abbi Tuttle, Braxton Conklin, Colton Tuttle, Jaxon Tuttle, Jaxson Partin, Blaine Tuttle, and Azalea Tuttle; four brothers, Mark Tuttle, Kim Tuttle, Henry Tuttle, and James Tuttle; and

two sisters, Kathy Recor and Jill Scofield.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Ellen Lombardo; and one brother, Gary Tuttle.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date, when it is safe for family and friends to gather.

Obituary Raymond Carl Scholz, 100 Raymond Carl Scholz of Peru, age 100, died at Dukes Memorial Hospital, Peru, Indiana, due to respiratory complications. He was the oldest son of William Carl and Luella (Swanson) Scholz, born Nov. 22, 1920. He married Betty Jane Bemisderfer Feb. 13, 1949, and they were married for 64 years. Raymond graduated from San Pierre High School in Indiana. He also attended Indiana

and West Virginia Universities. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps prior to World War II and received extensive training as an Air-

craft maintenance technician. In that capacity Raymond served in the China Burma India Campaign in which his unit received a Presidential Citation. After World War II he was employed in Aircraft Maintenance in the Civil Service. In civilian life Raymond was a member of several churches and served in various capacities as Sunday school teacher and Superintend-

ent, Choir member, Deacon, and as Peru Rolling Chapel treasurer and board member. He and his wife were committed to Christian missions and supported several missionaries.

He and Jane were the parents of four children: Neal, of Peru; Carl (Rebecca) of Galveston, Indiana, Susanne (John Jr.) Walton of Peru; and Dale (Sandra) of Walton, Indiana.

He is also survived

by two sisters, Dorothy of Greenville, South Carolina, and Sylvia of Valparaiso, Indiana.

Four brothers, one sister, and one grandson (John Walton) preceded him in death. His grandchildren are Ray (Leah) Scholz, Faith Walton and Sarah (Matthew) Lee. Raymond has five great grandchildren, Natalie, Elijah and Audri Scholz, and Mitchell and

Obituaries Julie R. Hunt Sisson, 61 Julie R. (Hunt) Sisson, 61 of Peru, passed away at 1:42 p.m., Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, surrounded by family.

She was born June 16, 1959, to Doyal and Connie Hunt. She graduated from Peru High School in 1978.

She married Michael Sisson Jan. 12, 1980.

They had three children Brooke Sheets (Adam), Carrie Fishback (Jared), and Carley Sisson (Cody Chamberlain). She is survived by her brother Jay Hunt (Lynn) and nephew Drew Hunt. Julie is also survived by her nine grandchildren Ryne Babbs, Dawsen Babbs, Pierce Babbs, Emma Babbs, Aiden Sheets, Addisyn Sheets, Jenna Fishback, Natalie Fishback, and Lindsey Fishback.

Julie was preceded in death by her father Doyal Hunt and her mother Connie Hunt.

Julie worked at Miami County Courthouse for over 20 years. Before work-

ing at the courthouse, she worked at K-mart for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.

Going to watch her grandkids playing football, basketball and baseball was one of her favorite things to do. She was their biggest fan. Her dog Oliver held a special place in her heart.

She had a love for planting flowers with her daughter Carley.

She also enjoyed watching Michigan football and basketball.

Carroll Jean Prather, 90 Carroll Jean Prather, 90, Bunker Hill, died at 10:35 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at her home in Bunker Hill.

She was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Miami County, the daughter of John B. Prather and Mamie E. (Snyder) Prather.

Carroll was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School in 1948 and attended all 12 years there.

She went to Ball Memorial School of Nursing and received her RN license in 1954. She worked at Ball Memorial Hospital from 1954 to 1956.

She also worked in hospitals in Long Beach, California, New York City, Howard Community Hospital in Kokomo from 1969 to 1971, and Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru from 1982 to 1996 and retired at that time after 42 years as a registered nurse. Carroll was a very caring and compas-

sionate nurse and her patients loved her. She was also an identical twin.

She and her identical twin sister, Carmen, had a lot of fun confusing others as to who was who throughout their lives. She was a former member of AORN in California and former member of Grace Methodist Church in Long Beach, California High Street Methodist Church in Muncie, and Bunker Hill United Methodist Church.
