Pollution prevention grants available

IDEM and U.S. EPA have partnered with the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership to offer on-site (or virtual) technical assistance at a significantly reduced cost to Indiana manufacturers. Receive 16 hours of training, and up to 40 hours of technical assistance from the Purdue MEP program, and be eligible for seed funding to implement your facility’s improvement project(s).

Eligibility: Manufacturing facilities located in Indiana.

Services offered: Purdue MEP will conduct an on-site (or virtual if preferred) assessment and training to identify opportunities to reduce water use, air pollutants, solid waste, toxic chemicals use, and energy use.

Purdue MEP will also:prepare a report and presentation with recommendations to your facility staff; compile a custom action plan for your facility; check-in to collect data on project status and results; customize a final report showing cost savings, carbon emissions reductions, and waste reductions as well as reductions in permitting, fees, labor, disposal costs, and other expenses (potential $10,000-200,000 value, based on previous IN NEXT WEEK’S EDITION: We will feature a riding group making their way from Washington D.C. results. James R. “Shorty” Walton, 73

Larry L. Fewell, 78 Larry L. Fewell, 78, of Amboy, Indiana, passed away at 5:55 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born in Peru Aug. 18, 1942, the son of Everett and Catherine Haase Fewell. Larry married Tamara Pond June 22, 1963, and she survives.

Larry was a 1961 graduate of Clay Township High School and retired Chrysler employee. He was a field member National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. He took great pleasure in building and flying model airplanes and building

A service celebrating the life of Larry L. Fewell was held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home, 201 N. Main St., Amboy, IN with Larry’s brother-inlaw, pastor Blaine Pond officiating. Burial was in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Family and friends gathered from Noon to 2 p.m., Tuesday at the Laird-Eddy Funeral Home.

In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the Amboy Volunteer Fire Department.

James R. “Shorty” Walton, 73, of Peru passed away at 6:50 p.m., Sunday, June 20, 2021, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Kokomo.

The sun rose on the day he was born and set on the day he died.

Born Sept. 8, 1947, in Monroe County, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Ananias and Nancy (White) Walton.

Shorty was a Peru High School graduate.

Survivors include his siblings, Alberta Wilson, Henrietta Lee, Gennie Terry, Hollie Walton, Janice Walton, Shirley Ann Walton, Carol Walton, Harold

Walton and Wayne Walton, beloved friends, Raymond and Roderick Kersey and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by siblings, Dick Walton, Steve Walton, John Walton,

Ananias Walton, Jr., Josiah “Billy” Walton, Willie Ambrose, Mary Walton, Cora Springer, Brenda Walton, Sandra Kay Walton, and Geraldine McIntosh.

Services were at 11 a.m., Friday, June 25, 2021, at Riverview Funeral Home in Peru with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Peru.

Earnest Delane Morris, 69 Earnest Delane Morris was born in Benham, Kentucky Dec. 31, 1951. Father, grandfather, avid golfer, bowler, and to his family “King” fisherman, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at Community Howard Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana.

Earnest resided in Bunker Hill, Indiana.

He is survived by his sister Caroline Ingram, brother-in-law Harold Lewis; his children Christopher Morris, Brian (wife) Lucinda Morris, Earnest “Ernie” Morris and Elizabeth (husband) Nick Purcell; and grandchildren Bryant

Morris, Holly Morris, Taylor Morris, Jordan Purcell and Brayton Purcell.

He was preceded in death by father Orville Morris, mother Bonnie Back, stepfather Burchess Back, brother Orville Rogers Morris, sister Veronica Ollen In-

gram, and sister Verla Lynn Lewis.

Purdue MEP serves over 500 companies annually by implementing continuous improvement principles in the areas of productivity, growth, and technology.

W.A.S.T.E. Stream Mapping can reveal substantial opportunities to reduce costs, improve production flow, save time, improve worker safety, reduce inventory, and improve environmental performance. These assessments take a broad look at manufacturing processes by focusing on all

environmental areas including Water, Air, Solid Waste, Toxics, and Energy (W.A.S.T.E).

Currently, U.S. EPA has partnered with IDEM and Purdue MEP to fund W.A.S.T.E. Stream Mapping assessments to 15 Indiana manufacturers at a significantly reduced cost.

Through these assessments, Purdue MEP will meet with your facility staff (virtually if preferred), conduct onsite training (virtually if preferred), and assess processes in your facility to identify

toxic materials, hazardous emissions, waste streams, and energy improvements. Indiana DNR: Remove bird feeders immediately The Indiana DNR has received reports of sick and dying songbirds from 15 counties statewide.

As the investigation continues, the DNR recommends all Hoosiers remove their birdfeeders statewide.

The 15 counties are Clark, Delaware, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, LaGrange, Lake, Marion, Monroe, Newton, St. Joseph, Union, Washington, and Whitley.

DNR is working with the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (IN ADDL) and the USGS National Wildlife Health Center to determine the birds’ cause of death.

The affected songbirds showed neurological signs of illness as well as eye swelling and crusty discharge.

Several samples have been sent to IN ADDL. All bird samples submitted have tested negative for avian influenza and West Nile virus.

The following steps are recommended statewide: • Use the DNR sick/dead wildlife reporting tool at on.IN.gov/sickwildlife to alert DNR staff.

• Stop feeding birds until the mor-

tality event has concluded.

• Clean feeders and baths with a 10% bleach solution.

• Avoid handling birds. If you need to handle birds, wear disposable gloves.

• When removing dead birds, wear disposable gloves and place birds and gloves in a sealable plastic bag to dispose with household trash.

• Keep pets away from sick or dead birds as a precaution.
