THE HEALERS

Those of us in our middle earlies often have to contend with aches and pains that the younger set does not experience. At least not as often. Enter the Healers.

Two under-used elements in the health professions are acupuncture and chiropractic.

I (lyle) have experienced both and am a big supporter of both.

About 15 years ago I was hit with extreme vertigo. I consulted both the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in La Jolla and Kaiser Permanente. Both administered a series of tests; both came back with the same verdict:

“We agree you have extreme vertigo . . . but we don’t know what caused it and we don’t know how to cure it.”

So I consulted long time fellow Kiwanis member Dr. Stephen Heilman, a chiropractor.

One adjustment. Vertigo was gone!

A year or two later I experienced extreme pain in my right hip and upper right leg. Went back to Dr. Heilman; two adjustments . . .and the sciatica, which was causing the pain, was gone! He simply relieved the pressure on the sciatic nerve . . . and my body returned to normal!

Now, I see Dr. Steve once or twice a year, just for a routine adjustment to make certain I’m where I should be.

More recently, after going through about four years of serious health problems, two cancers, a heart attack, COVID, kidney stone removal and, worst of all, shingles, I was continuing to have neuropathy in both feet and, worse, in both hands. I am a type 2 diabetic so it’s likely the foot neuropathy is caused by di-

abetes; the hands are more likely a residual effect of shingles. (Shingles attacks and sometimes kills nerves in your body). My hands were of greatest concern. Being a writer, if my fingers don’t work then I can no longer write and will have become, essentially, useless.

And so I returned to visit Dr. Mary Cen, a certified acupuncturist in San Marcos. I told her doctors from both the VA and Kaiser took note of my numbness and lack of flexibility in both hands . . . but had no idea how to deal with the phenomenon.

Mary spent two hours with me, consultation, exam and treatment. And, within days, I began to recover flexibility in my right hand, and, somewhat more limited, in my left hand.

I bow down in reverential awe to both Dr. Stephen Heilman and Dr. Mary Cen . . . the Healers! There are many excellent chiropractors available in our marketplace, a smaller number of outstanding

While chiropractic care may not be for everyone, it is equally true that tens of millions of Americans are finding that chiropractors have been the “right fit” for their particular condition.

Today in 2026, chiropractors are recognised as legitimate, licenced healthcare providers in all 50 U.S. states and are considered the thirdlargest doctorate-level, direct-access health profession.

PUBLIC INTEREST IN CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN THE UNITED STATES IS SOARING!

Today, millions of Americans are heading in the direction of chiropractors, and this upward surge is not a temporary trend, but a significant upswing with a market growth that is steadily increasing, according to top industry analysts.

MY FULL RECOVERY FROM SCIATICA.

In one documented medical case study, a patient suffering from sciatica credits the curing of this condition and improvement of general health to chiropractic treatments.

This is far from being an isolated case, but indicative of a wider macrocosm across the U.S.

Before consulting a chiropractor, the patient’s regular doctor had informed him that his life depended on back surgery. At this point, he was desperate for an alternative form of treatment, as he was constantly using painkillers with his current physician which didn’t always work. And surgery was not an attractive

option to him.

WHEN ALL VIABLE OPTIONS WERE (NOT) PRESENTED TO HIM.

It is documented that the patient felt powerless when told that surgical intervention was his “last resort” and he felt he had exhausted all viable options.

The patient decided to research things on his own.

And there was no better place to start than to visit the official website of the AMA (American Medical Association).

And so he did.

And it changed his life forever.

It finally salvaged his horrific life from persistent suffering and endless torment and sleepless nights.

tion actively encourages patients to ask questions, fully understand their treatment options, and then seek a second opinion. AMA policy, specifically in its Code of Medical Ethics, recognizes this as part of patient autonomy and empowerment.”

What he further read gave him renewed hope, and he then realised that surgery may not, in fact, be “his last resort” and that it was not necessarily true that his normal life “depended on back surgery.”

The printed words on his computer screen caused him to dare to believe that he could reclaim his life after all . . . without major surgery.

His eyes further read something that put tears of happiness in his eyes.

Verbatim, the words from the AMA read thusly: Medical doctors now recognize chiropractors as a specialist referral and as a viable option.

DIRECT ACCESS

In the U.S., chiropractors are considered primary contact providers, meaning patients often do not need a referral from a medical doctor to seek care. And they could still be covered by their insurance.

REFERRAL PROCESS

While many doctors are open to making referrals, studies indicate a significant number of primary care providers prefer to recommend that patients find a chiropractor on their own, rather than the physician issuing a formal, direct referral.

In this particular case study, that was all the patient needed to read.

He decided to give chiropractic treatment a try – and he is so happy that he did.

His chiropractor took some X-rays that showed a nerve was being pinched in his back and this was causing both back and leg pain.

In the wake of a couple of visits and simple adjustments, the lifethreatening pain that had been holding him back was relieved and he has been completely cured of sciatica, to this day!

Today, he is not only pain free, but the benefits go far beyond that.

He is now sleeping better, is worry-free, and contented.

Also his allergies and indigestion has ceased to plague him. And as a consequence of his chiroprac-

tic care, his energy have also improved.

A similar story is what brought “Dr. Steve” not only to chiropractic but to a thriving successful career as a chiropractor. “I was driving home late one evening and a car ran a red light and plowed into me as I was going through the intersection. I was quite shaken up by the experience, but I was “fine” or so I thought. By the next morning excruciating pain and muscle spasms traveled throughout my neck and back, and the pounding headaches seemed to never quit.I saw my family doctor because “that was who you go to when you are not feeling good,” and he gave me a list of exercises, and the typical anti-inflammatory medication with some muscle relaxers. Not only did I find them to taste disgusting, but they made me sleepy and depressed. I inquired about chiropractic care as I had chiropractic adjustments as a child from my godfather, but the doctor instructed for me to NOT go to a Chiropractor as the treatments would hurt too much (actually the phrase he used was “they will KILL you”).Well after two weeks of continuously feeling worse I decided to go to a Chiropractor anyway. The first thing I noticed was how detailed and thorough the examination was; in fact, significantly more thorough than the visit to the medical doctor. I had the feeling that the Chiropractor really understood my situation and made me confident that he knew what I was going through. From the very first adjustment my body responded favorably, and the tremendous relief of pain that I experienced with every spinal adjustment eventually made my back stronger and more flexible. But that was not my biggest miracle. My never-ending skull-splitting headaches that made studying impossible began to disappear. My first year of college provided me with a learning opportunity I could never have learned in a classroom, for Dr. Salem instilled in me the desire to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. I’ll never forget what he told me… “Steve, you should become a Chiropractor like your godfather was, you will get sick people well without using drugs or surgery, and you will develop a passion for going to work every day. There is no other career that will give you this same feeling that I have!” He said it with such certainty, and it was from the heart. No other doctor had talked to me about loving their profession like that. The choice seemed so obvious and so absolute that I knew I had to go to the administrative office at the school and set my major to prechiropractic studies. It was a matter of formality of course, as every

Nice Guys Non-Profit Collecting donations for annual auction

“Nice Guys” have been helping people in San Diego since 1979. Their donations have been in excess of $10 Million for families and individuals. There is no overhead, no office, and no paid staff. The 140+ Nice Guys donate their time and labor to help the less fortunate. The majority of the money they raise goes to help families who have somehow “fallen through the cracks.” A medical bill, a car repair, clothes needed after a house fire, a wheelchair for a young man injured while being a Good Samaritan. Their goal is to get people back on their feet. A hand- up, not a hand-out.

We are currently collecting donations for the auction. We collect restaurant gift cards, hotel rooms, wine, activities, ball games, concert tickets, memorabilia, vacations, etc. Anything and everything is appreciated.

The Auction event is Saturday, April 25, 2026. We will need all donations in-house by Friday, April 4, 2026.

The theme this year is “Mardi Gras” - Everyone will dress up including masks! So in addition to requesting some auction items, we would also love for you to join us! Tickets are $225 per seat, $2,250 for a table of 10.

These past few years you have all been generous and we truly appreciate it. Please let me know if you can help and or attend.

NOTE: Sadly, patients are often left without fully and properly being informed of all viable options open to them in the medical profession. Such omissions between doctor-patient relations is crucial, even if such omissions are not by design but accidental.

The AMA requires all doctor-patient relations and communications to be at their optimal level and that patients should fully comprehend and understand their medical condition as well as (all available) options which are open to them.

Is it negligence or on purpose that some patients are not readily told of all their medical options such as with chiropractors?

EARLY PROFESSIONAL JEALOUSY & SECRET SCANDAL AGAINST CHIROPRACTORS

Man

About Town

A memory from 2013 . . . (all better now!)

Dizziness

I’ve been having dizziness hit me . . . and increasing in intensity. Hadn’t fallen yet but came close a couple times. Thought it might be wax build up in the ears. Had the ears checked . . . ear wax was not the problem. VA audiologist scheduled a “positional vertigo” test for next Monday . . . said to eat a light meal, that I probably would not

BY THE PREVAILING MEDICAL COMMUNITY.

Although chiropractors are now recognised as legitimate, licenced healthcare providers in America, this was not always the case, and professional jealously against chiropractors from conventional doctors was prevalent, as is evidenced in historical court records.

Vestiges of earlier professional jealousy against chiropractic care still seems to persist today, often to the disadvantage and detrimental health of patients seeking relief from their various maladies (and never being told of chiropractic care).

While a historical, court-mandated shift removed bans on chiropractic association, full integration into the mainstream medical community still remains partial today, although referrals are increasingly common, particularly for musculoskeletal issues.

1987 LAWSUIT UNCOVERED CONSPIRACY BY THE AMA TO ELIMINATE CHIROPRACTIC PROFESSION AS A RIVAL.

Following a 1987 lawsuit (Wilk v. AMA) the American Medical Association (AMA) was found to have engaged in a conspiracy

like the test as, I guess, it would make me woozy.

Discussed this with my pals, Paul and Nome Van Middlesworth, owners of The Computer Factory in San Marcos. Paul: “Hey, Nome had the same thing. Dr. fixed her right up.” Nome: “I saw my dermatologist and when finished he said, ‘anything else I can do for you?’ I said, ‘well, if you could get rid of this dizziness, it’d be great.’ ‘No problem,’ said the doc. He adjusted Nome’s neck via a head adjustment. Two days later, all dizziness went away.”

Off I went to my friendly and talented local chiropractor (there are a number of excellent ones in North County). He adjusted me and voila! About 75% of the dizziness is gone!

What happens, apparently, is that crystals in your inner ear get out of balance and when they are out of balance, YOU are out of balance. The adjustment re-aligns the crystals.

I noticed when I got my adjustment that both my neck and back were ‘tight.’ I had not had an adjustment for several months. I will go back today or tomorrow for another adjustment. I want my neck and back

to eliminate the chiropractic profession by spreading information designed to discredit chiropractic care through public media and the scientific literature.

After the lawsuit, the AMA lifted bans on professional chiropractic association.

The 1987 lawsuit concluded that the AMA engaged in an unlawful conspiracy to restrict, contain, and eliminate the chiropractic profession, but finally affirming (admitting) the legitimacy of chiropractors as a rival, rather than being a unscientific profession.

AND YET TODAY AS A CAREGIVER TO MY “ADOPTED DAD” I FOUND THAT DOCTORS STILL DON’T LIST CHIROPRACTORS AS A VIABLE OPTION.

I have witnessed first-hand his patient-doctor consultations, often regarding various intense pain he has suffered through various maladies.

Sometimes through excruciating, torturous pain, I have sat and heard him practically imploring his various doctors:

“Is there anything that can be explored or for you to recommend as a possible option to eliminate -- or at least to alleviate -- my pain?”

In all of these scenarios at various

to be loose and flexible, not tight.

I’m a big believer and supporter of chiropractic. Good pal and fellow Kiwanian, Dr. Steve Heilman, is a great chiropractor (Escondido); Dr. Mark Cavagna (who just goes by the name of Dr. Mark - Cavagna rhymes with Lasagna . . . but rather than explain it, he just has folks call him Dr. Mark . . . also an excellent chiropractor (San Marcos).

Often, a visit to your friendly and talented chiropractor will result in a lot less need to see a medical doctor.

Even though 75% of my dizziness has disappeared I’ll still keep my appointment Monday for the positional vertigo test(s) just to ensure all bases are covered. I suspect, however, that another visit to the chiropractor will remove any remaining dizziness.

Aches? Pains? Dizziness? Tell your chiropractor about it. Chances are he, or she, can help you out.

hospital settings and with different specialists, not once have any of these physicians – through the years -- ever recommended chiropractic care, at least, as a possible option to even be considered.

(After such consultations, I would often cry my eyes out at night, unknown to my Dad.)

Fortunately, my Dad was wise enough to have long-explored the practical benefits derived from chiropractic care and to this day in 2026 he still has his favourite chiropractor here in Escondido who is efficacious and brilliant in his profession, Dr. Stephen Heilman.

However, my concern for others remains: What about all those millions of other patients around the United States – my fellow Americans -- who haven’t had this chiropractic option presented to them, despite their pleas for their physicians to explore all feasible treatments, short of surgery?

Clarification in referencing my Dad. Through the years, our vast readership is aware that my editor/ publisher lyle e. davis has made known that he intended to legally adopt me years ago; explored the proceedings; and planned to ex-

By the way, just in recent weeks while my Dad was having consultation with his neurologist, I noticed that ONLY after he brought up chiropractors and acupuncturists, did the specialist suddenly reveal that the V.A Hospital, indeed, had an approved list of both chiropractors and acupuncturists long available for consideration!

The most dangerous Thing You Can do When Traveling

It never crossed my mind that the most dangerous thing in Nairobi would be on the road. A mosquito carrying an exotic disease or a hippopotamus, maybe. But when I boarded a bus -- and then gripped the seat in front of me in panic as it nearly collided with several vehicles on the road -- I knew I was wrong.

Kenya has a reputation for dangerous traffic. About 3,000 people die on its roads annually, according to one report. That’s about 68 deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles, which is an astonishing 30 to 40 times greater than in highly motorized countries.

It gets worse. Driving, it turns out, is the most dangerous thing you can do as a traveler. Period.

“Motor vehicle accidents remain the leading cause of fatalities for travelers,” says Bob Bacheler of Flying Angels, a medical transport company.

It’s true, according to the CDC Yellow Book, road accidents are the number one cause of death abroad.

Yet most travelers spend more time researching restaurant reviews than checking local driving laws.

“Travelers frequently let their guard down when it comes to trans-

portation,” explains Deanna Caffrey, a director at Redpoint Travel Protection, “whether it’s hopping into an unlicensed taxi, renting a motorbike without a helmet, or assuming road conditions are the same as back home.”

Neville Mehra, who co-founded travel insurance company Genki after a decade of nomadic travel, puts it bluntly: “Renting a scooter is the leading cause of death among our members who’ve died while traveling.”

But there are other things that are risky for travelers. And they can can ruin your vacation.

“One of the most dangerous things

travelers do is forgo travel insurance because they assume nothing will go wrong,” says Joe Cronin, president of International Citizens Insurance.

The assumption costs people dearly. Mehra’s company recently handled a broken ankle claim in Bali that cost $31,011. Appendicitis surgery in Mexico? $34,708. Some hospital bills in Thailand have reached $132,000.

“While a simple doctor visit for the flu might cost $20 in Vietnam, emergency trauma care is much more expensive,” Mehra explains. “Hospitals in other countries can and do refuse treatment without upfront payment.”

Daniel Durazo, a spokesman for Allianz Travel Insurance, sees the aftermath regularly.

“Emergency medical coverage can help arrange and pay for medical care and even get you home if necessary,” he says. “Most U.S. health insurance plans don’t extend internationally.”

Is there a travel safety myth?

“The most dangerous assumption a traveler can make is that their journey will go smoothly,” says Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor. He says airline screw-ups can put you in danger, from separating families to abandoning elderly passengers at the airport.

Susan Sherren, founder of luxury travel agency Couture Trips, says people are unprepared for the dangers of travel. She cites a remarkable statistic: Fully half of all climbers hiking Mount Kilimanjaro experience some form of altitude sickness because of lack of knowledge about acclimatization.

“Imagine if you’ve been training at sea level with your buddies, what a disaster this could turn into,” she says.

In short, people don’t know what to

My Meeting w/ EPA Administrator Zeldin: Hold mexico accountable

I joined Congressman Issa and Supervisor Jim Desmond for a follow-up meeting with EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to make sure progress is being made to end the Tijuana Sewage Crisis.

I made it clear: Mexico must live up to its com-

mitments to repair its sewage treatment facilities and build new facilities. If they don’t, we must consider cutting off their access to fresh water—one gallon of potable water for every gallon of sewage they send north. No more delays. No more excuses. It’s time for action and accountability.

Here’s what the Mexican government’s lack of urgency has cost us: Over 100 billion gallons of toxic sewage dumped into the Pacific, Navy SEALs poisoned during training in contaminated waters. 1,000+ consecutive days of beach closures in places like Imperial Beach and millions of dollars in damage to our economy and coastal communities

Enough is enough.

Administrator Zeldin promised

that this administration will no longer accept the status quo and delivered by signing Minute 333. As a result, for the first time in years, there’s real hope this crisis can be solved. There are plans to have projects finished in the next two years, with final completion in 2028. We will continue to receive quarterly updates regarding this situation directly from the EPA.

But we need to keep up the pressure.

We must demand accountability, protect our coast, and stop this environmental disaster once and for all.

San Diego Deserves Accountability Before New Taxes

While San Diego families were grieving loved ones lost to fentanyl, a county-funded nonprofit executive was allegedly spending their tax dollars on plastic surgery and vacations to Hawaii.

This week, the San Diego County District Attorney announced six felony charges against the former chief operating officer of the Harm Reduction Coalition of San Diego — a nonprofit that received more than $5 million in county contracts to distribute Narcan and prevent fentanyl deaths. The charges allege that more than $130,000 in those funds were stolen and spent on cosmetic procedures, luxury travel, and personal expenses.

Let that sink in. While first responders were racing to get Narcan into the hands of people who needed it most, these life-saving dollars were allegedly being siphoned off for trips to Hawaii and Disneyland.

What makes this case even more alarming is the breakdown in oversight. As the District Attorney revealed, even after professional county staff raised concerns, county officials awarded a second contract to this organization — allowing the defendant to continue lining her pockets with public funds. The county’s own audit had flagged significant financial control weaknesses. A background check revealed the individual had a prior conviction for stealing more than $500,000 from a previous employer. Every red flag imaginable was there. Officials moved forward anyway and I was not informed.

To be clear about where I stand: I have never supported harm reduction efforts such as drug checking or needle distribution, as I believe they cause more harm than they prevent. But I do support Narcan distribution, and it is reprehensible that dollars meant to save lives from overdose were stolen instead.

This is not about casting blame. It

is about protecting public trust.

When public funds are distributed — particularly to outside nonprofits — accountability cannot fade. Taxpayer dollars are not blank checks. They are earned by hardworking families already stretched thin by the rising cost of living, and those families deserve to know their money is being used responsibly. That is why I have called for a public presentation outlining the county’s fraud prevention safeguards and greater transparency in spending.

This issue is personal to me. I have led the fight against fentanyl at the county since the beginning — from mandatory education in our schools to the “One Pill Can Kill” awareness campaign with the District Attorney. Every dollar meant for that fight represents a life that could be saved. When those dollars are misused, it is not just a financial failure. It is a betrayal of the families counting on us.

And it raises a much bigger question.

Right now, there are active efforts to raise taxes on San Diego families — a proposed half-cent countywide sales tax that could generate $360 million a year. The

county just spent $320,000 on political consultants to study whether voters would support it.

Before asking families for a single dollar more, government needs to prove it can be trusted with the dollars it already has.

We don’t have a revenue problem. We have an accountability problem.

Oversight works. Transparency works. Audits work. When we shine light on spending, problems get caught and corrected. We should not wait for larger scandals before demanding stronger safeguards.

San Diegans work too hard for their money to see it wasted. I will keep fighting to make sure every dollar is spent the way it was intended — transparently, responsibly, and in service of the families who are counting on us.

Every dollar matters. Every life matters. And accountability is not negotiable.

ACUPUNCTURE IS NOW GROWING AT A MOST PHENOMENAL RATE ACROSS ALL PARTS OF THE UNITED STATES!

Acupuncture is officially recognised by the American Medical Association (AMA) as a valid treatment

Over 10 million treatments are administered annually, with 72.8 % of users seeking relief for a wide spectrum of conditions such as chronic back pain, arthritis, and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) and the nerve damage caused by shingles.

LOSS OF FINGER DEXTERITY CAUSED BY SHINGLES.

Loss of digital dexterity, known as “peripheral neuropathy,” is caused when the shingles virus damages specific nerves, resulting in the disruption of signals between the brain and the muscles. Acupuncture in this regard, can improve blood flow and stimulate nerve regeneration, all of which may assist with restoring finger flexibility and dexterity (such as picking up small objects like coins, paperclips, etc.), as well as a better grasp for writing instruments like pencils and pens.

VERTIGO & DIZZINESS & BALANCE ISSUES.

modality, particularly when integrated into pain management plans by trained, licenced professionals. As such, it is widely practised in 47 U.S. states including the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C.

During my (lyle) acupuncture appointment with Dr. Mary Cen, I asked her how she became involved in acupuncture. “When I was about 10 years old my mother was the Head Nurse at a large hospital in Shanghei, China. One day I had terrible stomach pains and my mom took me with her to work and introduced me to an acupuncturist. I refused to let them stick needles in me . . . so my mom wisely brought in a regular physician and he prescribed acupuncture. I then agreed to try it. And it worked. No more stomach pain. I even jumped up and down to see if it would return. No! The stomach pain was gone and it never returned. From that day on I began to study acupuncture, reading everything I could find. Later, I enrolled in acupuncture school. I studied acupuncture as well as Western Medicine.” (Mary is licensed to practice Western Medicine in China as well as acupuncture. She is licensed in California to practice acupuncture).

ACUPUNCTURE PERCENTAGE HAS DOUBLED WITHIN THE U.S.

In the U.S. the trending numbers are phenomenal and continue to grow with a staggering percentage of adult Americans partaking of acupuncture now (doubling) between 2002 and 2022.

Acupuncture can alleviate vertigo and dizziness by improving blood circulation in both the inner ear as well as the brain, and modulating the vestibular system. In addition to vertigo, these systemic areas interplay to also address walking and balance issues, muscle weakness, and even facial paralysis caused by the post shingles virus affecting “motor nerves” or specific “cranial nerves” which control and regulate balance (something which segments of mainstream medicine was unaware).

All of the above symptoms hit me (lyle). Primary concern was the numbness and inflexibility of my hands – but I also had balance issues, sleep deprivation issues, arthritic pain in my back and right shoulder (torn rotator cuff). Mary Cen treated these issues as well with some improvement in each area . . .but particularly in my hands and fingers, which was my primary concern.

Know these Strategies to Spot AI Travel Scams

Randy Rupp thought he’d seen it all. A retired federal law enforcement agent with years of experience spotting fraud, he and his wife, Becki, were planning a hiking trip to Italy’s Dolomites. They’d booked their hotel in Bolzano months earlier through an online travel agency.

Then came the WhatsApp message that nearly got them. The message appeared to come from hotel staff and included specific details about their booking.

“It was very well written,” says Becki Rupp, a travel coach who’s helped countless clients navigate travel logistics. The scammer requested they re-enter their credit card information through a provided link.

Fortunately, a technical glitch saved them from getting ensnared.

“The landing page for the confirmation wasn’t working,” she remembers. That technical hiccup prompted her to contact the hotel directly through its official website. And, as it turns out, there was no problem with their reservation.

A New Age of Travel Fraud

The Rupps’ close call illustrates a disturbing trend: AI is making travel scams nearly impossible to detect.

Traditional red flags like poor grammar and obvious spelling mistakes have vanished, thanks to ChatGPT and Gemini. Today’s AI-powered scams feature flawless language, authentic-looking websites, and sophisticated social engineering that can fool even the most experienced travelers.

“Travel scams have proliferated with AI,” says Cayce Myers, a communication professor at Virginia Tech. “Scams play on urgency because people don’t have time to think and reflect on whether this is a genuine interaction or something that is manufactured through AI.”

The numbers are staggering. McAfee reports a 900 percent surge in AI travel scams in the last year, with one in five Americans getting scammed while booking travel. Of those who lost money, 13 percent reportedly lost over $500, and 5 percent lost more than $1,000.

How AI Supercharges Travel scams

How are scammers using AI to deceive you? This list is long.

deepfake Voice Calls. Scammers

now clone voices to impersonate airline representatives, hotel staff, or even travel companions in distress. These calls often include real booking details stolen from data breaches.

“But the rhythm or timing of the voice is usually off a little, or sounds a little too perfect,” says Mike Engelhart, chief technology officer at iSeatz.

ai-generated Phishing. Gone are the days of obvious phishing emails. AI now crafts messages with perfect grammar and authentic branding that mimic legitimate travel confirmations.

“AI technology can create messages that look very legitimate, without the errors you would normally expect,” says Edward Tian, CEO of GPTZero.

fake booking sites. AI generates entire travel websites complete with stolen photos, fabricated reviews, and cloned interfaces of legitimate platforms like Airbnb or Booking.com.

AI-Manufactured Reviews and Content. Fraudsters use AI to generate fake travel reviews or create social media personas offering discounted trips. Travel pictures and videos generated and edited using AI are used to lure people into paying for travel packages or tours that don’t exist.

These red flags still Work

Despite AI’s sophistication, experts say certain warning signs remain reliable.

Payment methods. Legitimate businesses don’t request payment via cryptocurrency, wire transfers, gift cards, or peer-to-peer apps like Venmo or Zelle.

urL irregularities. Look for

slight misspellings like “Booklng. com” instead of “Booking.com” or unusual domains ending in “.xyz” instead of “.com.”

Contact verification issues. If a “customer service” representative can’t verify basic booking details they should have access to, it’s likely a scam.

“Genuine providers can always confirm a booking reference, ticket number, and previously stored payment method without asking the customer to supply them,” says Nic Adams, co-founder of 0rcus.

But perhaps the biggest giveaway has to do with timing.

“Urgency is often a major red flag,” says Zoey Jiang, who teaches business technology at Carnegie Mellon University. “Beware of listings pressuring you with claims like ‘Only 1 left at this price!’”

What To do if You’re Caught

If you suspect you’re stuck in an AI scam, stop all communication immediately.

Contact your bank or credit card company. Ask it to freeze your accounts and dispute any credit card charges immediately.

Verify your booking independently. Use an official airline website and the published phone numbers. Do not use a link from an email message -- it might be a fake.

report the scam. Let the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center know about it. To recover your money you may have to file a report as part of your dispute.

Reset your passwords. Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts.

document everything. Save screenshots, emails, and call logs. You may need them later.

“The faster you act, the better your chances of stopping any payments or reversing the charges,” advises Anusha Parisutham, the senior director of product at the AI company Feedzai.

Is there a fix to stop the AI scams?

Travel companies are fighting back with technology. They’re using tools like biometric verification -using face scans to prevent deepfake impersonation. They’re also implementing better cryptographic email signing to verify authentic communications and deploying AI scam detections to identify synthetic content.

“The same tools being used to deceive can also be used to protect,” notes Engelhart of iSeatz. “But it takes cross-platform collaboration and design choices that prioritize clarity over speed.”

Perhaps the most insidious aspect of AI travel scams is how they exploit our trust in technology. Travelers often assume that sophisticated, well-designed communications must be legitimate.

“Scammers count on silence and shame to keep their efforts going,” says Petros Efstathopoulos, vice president of research and development at RSAC, a cybersecurity conference. “By reporting the fraud and speaking out, you help protect others.”

The Rupps’ experience offers an important lesson: Even cybersecurity professionals and experienced travelers aren’t immune. The key is maintaining healthy skepticism in an age when perfect presentation no longer guarantees authenticity.

In a world where AI can clone voices, forge emails, and create entire fake travel experiences in minutes, the most powerful defense remains the most human one: pause and verify, and trusting your instincts when something feels off.

Otherwise, you might need a glitchy website to save your vacation.

The Pastor says . . . imagination

Most events in life are rather mundane, but with imagination, they can become challenging and exciting. This would mean looking beyond the event and the account’s simplicity. For many, this would be anathema, forbidden, and sacrilegious, especially in the religious arena. But let’s give it a try in this article. First, though, in our everyday lives, let’s say that Greenland becomes annexed to the US. We would want to change the name to Trump. It would be a first to honor the man who made it happen, even though he wasn’t the first to have the idea. We didn’t change Alaska to Andrew Johnson or the Louisiana Territory to Thomas Jefferson. It would take a lot of imagination to break this pattern, but then, can we even imagine such an event happening? This question leads us to broader possibilities: Can we imagine a world without war, or one in which all people in this country and around the world are free? Is it possible that with love, there wouldn’t be murder, theft, divorce, and the fulfillment of life without cheating, taxes, and abusive behavior toward others? I would like to imagine all people being happy, healthy, and wise. But is it to be? Many would say that is not the real world. So such imagination would be folly. At least we can think about it.

There are two areas in the Biblical field that I am constantly asked about that will take great imagination. Jesus discusses both. In fact, He brings them into focus. To connect our imaginative exercise to matters of faith, let us consider these two examples: the first is the account of the two women grinding grain. And the second is the day of the resurrection of the dead.

The first account concerns two women grinding grain. One disappears, and the other is left. Matthew 24:41. Where does one go? Why is one left? It takes a lot of imagination to figure this out. Why is one left? Is it because she is a poor grain grinder? Is she a poorer person? Where did the other one go? There is nothing here about belief or character. It is all left up to one’s imagination. Before moving to the next scenario, consider the parallel in the preceding passage: two men in the field. One is taken, and the other is left. Who takes them, and what happens to the one that is left? In either case, there is still work to be done. The important thing is always to be ready and doing.

The second passage that calls for imagination is in John 5:28. Jesus says, “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all

Perhaps it’s not quite over. It seems there will always be a use for a few stand-alone PCs. But for the vast majority of PCs, (personal computers) the PC age is history. In the fifty plus years since PCs debuted in the early 1970s, the PC has enjoyed quite a ride. In the early days PCs, with their on-board reservoir of programs, information and computing power they became essential to business, engineers, scientist, realtors, college students, sales folk etc. In the first three decades of its existence the PC blossomed into Desktops, Laptops, All-in-Ones and Microcomputers, each with its own special niche. Users like governments, schools and corporations with large user bases could afford to create proprietary networks for their users as they shared programs

A man walked into an animal shelter and told how he had seen someone pull over to the side of the road, open the door, toss out a cat and her kittens, then speed away. His first instinct was to chase down the driver, but he made the better choice by rescuing the cat and kittens.

Working in an animal shelter, you never lose your passion, but you do develop thick skin. Abandoning babies is something you NEVER get used to.

and applications. At the turn of the 21st century AI (artificial intelligence) and broadband (high speed internet) were combined to form today’s Internet, the IW or (Intelligent Web). Many home and small business PCs users began to enjoy the shared benefits familiar to large businesses.

As we moved into the second decade of the 21st century, developers continued to increase the operating speeds of Internet servers. 75% of the Earth’s population has access to the IW today and that number is increasing each year. Most government, educational institutions and large corporations have been using LAN (Local Area Network) applications for decades. Until the arrival of the IW in 2001, small business and home users did not have a reliable multi-user, high speed source for Internet based programs.

In order to accommodate the increasing reliance on the processing power of Internet servers, the CPU core count per server had risen from four in year 2000 and then to sixty four or more CPU cores by year 2025. The number of CPU cores in servers is predicted to top 1000 by 2030. In recent years IW server based programs have become a low cost, high speed alternative to local PC stand-alone programs for many applications. Server based applications today are less costly, faster and more

reliable than stand-alone PC alternatives. The trend toward server based vs stand-alone programming has been strong and growing since the introduction of the IW in 2001. Through the IW, small business and home users now have access to the overwhelming majority of applications written for multi–user server clients. Using server based applications is cheaper and safer than using the same application as a “stand-alone” utility. The trend is toward offering all applications as server based. It appears that as the new networked versions of standard programs become available, most users opt for the server-based versions.

The use of IW server based appli-

cations by small business and home users has been accelerating in recent years but we still seem to have a fifty year love affair with our ancient peripheral devices. The mouse, keyboard, screen, storage drives, and RAM have remained virtually unchanged in function for the past five decades. By contrast our PCs have undergone a recent and dramatic change in function. They are no longer a PC (personal computer). Today most latter day PCs are merely Internet I/O terminals. The mouse, keyboard, screen, storage drive, RAM have been part of our home and business computer set-up for over half a century. As PCs have ceded their computing responsibilities to the IW, how will it change the function of peripheral devices?

This reminded me of something that happened at Rancho Coastal Humane Society about ten years ago during “Kitten Season” when most kittens are born.

We were closing when one of the Animal Care Attendants noticed a crate in the Cattery. It wasn’t one of our crates. There was a cat inside. It was not one of our cats.

Today, our security cameras would record this. Even without cameras back then, we knew that somebody waited until nobody was watching, slipped in, sat the crate in a corner, then abandoned their cat.

There was no food or water. No blanket. Nothing to keep the cat comfortable. If we hadn’t found it, that cat would have suffered a horrible, terrifying night.

How could anybody do this? Was it someone who just didn’t care,

or someone desperate who didn’t know that there were other options.

• If they didn’t want their cat they could surrender it to an animal

shelter. The information they could provide would help their cat find its new home.

• If they were desperate, we could help. Our Animal Safehouse Program, Brock’s Community Pet Food Bank, and FREE Pet Vaccination Clinics have helped hundreds of families keep their pets when they thought it was impossible. We gave the owner time to come to their senses and come back for their cat. When nobody showed up, the cat was adopted and went home with its new family. It spent the rest of its life in a loving home where it never again had to worry about being abandoned.

February is Prevent a Litter Month. We can stop stories like these simply by having our pets spayed or neutered.

Please share this story. Together we save lives.

My stepfather, John, a father and friend to me, had it, as did his sister. John dealt with it almost like Alan Alda is, keep going, don’t stop, and he managed it very well with that philosophy. My mother and John, ever in love, traveled to their heart’s content, never losing his incredible attitude, his graciousness, and true love for close to fifty years, until dying from cancer. One wouldn’t have known he had cancer from him. He was 87 when he passed. Thank you again Mr. Gomez, Andrew Mercer

sing for The Health of it Try barbershop singing!

Singing in a chorus has many physical and cognitive benefits:

• You pay attention to your posture to improve your breathing.

• You strengthen muscles used in breathing, allowing you to breathe more deeply so you can support and sustain notes.

• You actively listen so that you match others in your voice part and are in harmony with other parts.

• Singing releases endorphins which make you feel good too.

• In an acappella chorus, which has no accompaniment, you memorize the notes. (In a barbershop a cappella chorus, you also memorize lyrics).

The Music Men Chorus (Palomar Pacific Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society) is a men’s acappella choir that performs 4-part, close-harmony songs arranged in the “Barbershop” Style, known for its ringing chords. We sing a variety of song genres (romantic ballads, movie and show tunes, Great American Songbook selections, patriotic songs, inspirational numbers, and Christmas holiday favorites), performing at both public and private venues in North County.

Our members believe that singing in our chorus keeps them healthier, both physically and mentally. We have 3 members in their 90’s who regularly attend rehearsal.

If you are a male, high school age or older, who loves to sing and is interested in joining a chorus, we invite you to attend one of our Tuesday evening rehearsals, learn more about us, and see how singing can enhance your life. Previous musical experience is helpful but not a requirement. We meet at 7 pm at San Marcos Lutheran Church, 3419 Grand Avenue, in the Luther Hall. For more information, contact Bill at (760) 5856315 or visit our website, www. musicmenchorus.org.

expect -- and they aren’t prepared.

Sherren tries to help her clients understand the true dangers of travel and how to avoid them every day. And people are often surprised about what is -- and is not -- dangerous.

What actually works?

The safety habits that make a difference aren’t glamorous. In fact, they’re boring. And that’s exactly why they work.

Start With Research

Not just where to eat, but where the nearest hospital is. What’s the local emergency number? (It’s not always 911.) What are the traffic laws?

“Do your research not just on your final destination, but on any layover cities as well,” advises John Gobbels, Medjet’s chief operating officer. “An airspace closure or local unrest could leave you stranded somewhere you hadn’t planned for.”

Ashley Glinka, a former federal air marshal, emphasizes situational awareness over self-defense gadgets.

“The ability to gauge your surroundings in real time and trust your instincts often proves more crucial than martial arts skills,” she says.

And Please Wear Your Seatbelt

“Wearing a seatbelt can reduce your risk of fatal injury by 45 percent,” Bacheler notes. “I can’t tell you how many times we’re called to bring U.S. citizens home and the report starts with ‘Unrestrained passenger in Motor Vehicle Collision’.”

Be Afraid Of This

The most dangerous thing you can do when you travel may not be

walking down a dark alley. It’s assuming nothing will go wrong, especially when you get into a taxi or rideshare, or behind the wheel of a rental car.

That assumption leads to skipped insurance, ignored safety research, and other careless decisions. It makes you hop into unvetted taxis, dismiss local warnings, and push physical limits you haven’t tested in years.

“Preparation and mindset keep you safe,” says Lisa Mauretti, a travel coach. “Planning for the unexpected can save much disappointment, pain, and money.”

Ironically, the precautions that actually protect you cost very little. Travel insurance runs 4 to 8 percent of your trip cost. Researching local emergency numbers takes 5 minutes. And wearing a seatbelt costs nothing at all.

As for my white-knuckle bus ride through Nairobi, I survived it. But it left me with an appreciation of the dangers of traveling by road. And, to be honest, I’m much more of a train guy now.

who are in the tombs will hear His voice, will come out:” Two classes of people will be called forth, the good and the bad, depending on their behavior. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me about all of this happening. The word I hear is, “I can’t imagine such a thing happening.” Linking this to my own experience, I often ponder this as I think of the hundreds of graves at Oak Hill Cemetery or the thousands I have visited all over the world. Graves opening, dead emerging, and then the judgment of God with a voice of judgment. Can you imagine such a thing happening in this world of science and finality? Or is there much more that defies our limited imagination? We live in an age that almost does that in this world of material creativity. Is there another dimension of which we know so little?
