Are Escondido & North County Prepared for a

MAJOR EARTHQUAKE? By Friedrich Gomez Is our beautiful city of Escondido fully and properly prepared (according to city and state guidelines) in case of a major, unexpected earthquake? And what about the rest of our North San Diego County region and sister cities, such as Valley Center, San Marcos, Vista, and Oceanside to enumerate just a few examples? Not to mention, the whole of our San Diego Metropolitan area?

Are we all as safe as we can be – as we should be? And are we asking our respective North County City Officials the lifesaving question: “Are we prepared for a full-blown major earthquake?” According to various U.S. earthquake geologists and other research experts: “Nearly 200 Southern California cities are unprepared for a major earthquake.” CALIFORNIA EXPERIENCES

MORE THAN 100 EARTHQUAKES EACH & EVERY SINGLE DAY! One shocking and almost entirely unknown fact for just about every California resident is that we, in reality, are experiencing over 100 earthquakes – each and every single day! You may be thinking: “But surely, that seems impossible! Because ... well, because such a shocking fact as this would certainly be common knowledge because we would feel all these earthquakes!”

And yet, sadly, this is not common knowledge. And yes, you would be correct, we don’t feel these tiny, daily earth tremours. So, why worry? Right? Wrong. While it is true that most of these hundreds, perhaps thousands, of daily California earth tremours are too small in magnitude; and cause little or no damage; and even go completely unnoticed to most if

Earthquake from page 1 not all California residents, they are still a potentially viable, insidious danger. According to seismologists, this nonstop 24-hour seismic activity can add dangerous, subterranean tension along thousands of interconnected fault lines -- many of which run right through our North San Diego County region. OVER 70% OF ALL CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS LIVE (WITHIN) 30 MILES OF AN EARTHQUAKE FAULT LINE. First off, what is a “fault line”? The official United States Geological Survey defines it as follows: “Earthquakes occur on fault lines. A fault line is a fracture or zone of fractures between blocks of rock. Many, but not all, faults are entirely beneath the surface of the ground. When an earthquake occurs on one of these faults, the block of rock on one side of the fault slips with respect to the other. The most prominent faults in (every) U. S. state are carefully monitored and shown on a geologic map as black lines. However, many faults remain hidden and entirely beneath the surface of the earth.”

Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle

A startling fact is: (Over) 70% of all residents in America’s most populated state of California -all live (within 30 miles) of an earthquake fault line. More startling is that most people in San Diego County live (less than 15 miles) from a fault line which could, unpredictably, trigger a dangerous chain-reaction of earthquakes at any time. Add to this fact that earthquake fault lines are often inter-connected with other fault lines, not only here in San Diego County, but all the way north to Los Angeles and beyond! OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA SITS OFFSHORE VARIOUS MAJOR FAULT LINES. Some fault lines are even offshore in the ocean depths off the coastline of Oceanside, California, where earthquake activity is being monitored and recorded every day (although, to repeat, these seismic activities are mostly too slight and, therefore, go unnoticed by residents). The North County coastal city of Oceanside sits offshore of multiple faults, including the San Diego Trough Fault Zone, the 30mile-long Coronado Bank Fault, as well as the 101-mile-long Rose Canyon Fault Line which was previously (and conservatively) estimated to be only 31 miles in

length. The 100-plus mile long Rose Canyon Fault actually begins in Oceanside and runs south through San Diego. This seismic activity on the ocean floor just off the coast of Oceanside is nothing new to scientists from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which is the official U. S. cated in the ocean depths, offshore, rather than on the populated mainland of Oceanside. As it was, the earthquake still damaged at least 50 buildings from Newport Beach in the north, down to San Diego. Some damage was reported in the Tijuana, Mexico, area. And a small landslide occurred near Lakeside, in eastern San Diego County. Damage estimates reached nearly one million dollars. It is surmised that the quake was the result of both the San Diego Trough Fault Zone and the Palos Verdes-Coronado Bank fault zone.

According to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center, at precisely 6:37 a.m. (PDT) on 13 July 1986, one of the strongest earthquakes to ever strike San Diego’s North County registered 5.4 on the Richter scale and was centred off the coast of Oceanside.

NEW CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE FAULT LINES ARE BEING DISCOVERED IN RECORD NUMBERS!

Authority website: https://www. earthquakeauthority.com/California-Earthquake-Risk/FaultsBy-County

A disturbing fact is that new faults are constantly being discovered in surprising numbers, all of which reminds seismologists as to how little we really know about earthquakes. Along with that fact is that we are now facing a most staggering and even greater potential danger to human life, than ever previously imagined!

HOW MANY “SILENT” EARTHQUAKES HIT ESCONDIDO, VALLEY CENTER, SAN MARCOS, VISTA & OCEANSIDE EVERY DAY? On average, these small, unnoticed tremours are of M1.5 or greater magnitude. During the 2023 calendar year, the following minor earthquakes were recorded (in or near) the following North San Diego County cities. ESCONDIDO, CALIFORNIA 433 light earthquakes, unnoticed by the general populace, over the calendar year of 2023. (Source: https://earthquaketrack. com/us-ca-escondido/recent) VALLEY CENTER, CALIFORNIA 486 light earthquakes, unnoticed by the general populace, over the calendar year of 2023. (Source: https://earthquaketrack. com/us-ca-valley-center/recent) SAN MARCOS, CALIFORNIA 410 light earthquakes, unnoticed by the general populace, over the calendar year of 2023. (Source: https://earthquaketrack.com>us-ca-sanmarcos>recent) VISTA, CALIFORNIA 384 light earthquakes, unnoticed by the general populace, over the calendar year of 2023. (Source: https://earthquaketrack. com/us-ca-vista/recent) OCEANSIDE, CALIFORNIA 288 light earthquakes, unnoticed by the general populace, over the calendar year of 2023. (Source: https://earthquaketrack. com/us-ca-oceanside/recent) SAN DIEGO COUNTY EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY HAS “DOUBLED” Every year, California experiences thousands of earthquakes along these various faults, with about 500 of them large enough to be felt by residents. Since 1984, earthquake activity in San Diego County has “doubled” over that of the preceding 50 years!

California scientists now confirm the discovery of over 100 new, additional (active) earthquake faults in just our Southern California region, alone! All potentially dangerous. And more will surely be discovered, so say the experts. WAKE-UP CALL FOR ESCONDIDO: AMERICA’S MASSIVE 1994 EARTHQUAKE ONLY 127 MILES NORTH OF ESCONDIDO! California’s massive and devastating 1994 Northridge quake would become “one of the “costliest natural disasters at the time.” Over $100 billion dollars in damage (by today’s currency) displaced more than 25,000 people from their homes, apartments, and other dwellings and uprooted bridges, railway trains, gas lines, water, and other infrastructure which caused widespread panic. This massive and terrifying event would also occur less than 130 miles north of Escondido, and prove to be a shocking wake-up call for North San Diego County residents. Keep in mind that Escondido and our other North County regions are linked by a network of different earthquake fault lines -- directly to Los Angeles and beyond! Although most people only think of the 800-mile-long San Andreas fault (which is one of the largest in the entire world) and upon which San Diego County, Los Angeles, and even Big Sur sit atop of) there are, in fact, thousands of other fault lines interconnecting these cities! To make matters even worse, it is theorised that there may be thousands of other undiscovered faults interconnecting us – a new calculus which places us in “a surplus of potential peril.”

Meanwhile, in Omaha, Nebraska, where I grew up, the wind chill factor is minus 45 degrees. Where would I rather be? Right where I am! Though just a tad chilly, requiring an extra blanket at night, it is far preferable to the horrible cold and snow snap back in the midwest. It is at times like these when one wanders back to more pleasant memories. I’m not sure where or when I came up with the idea but it’s one of my

We started out on a rather serene stretch of water - but soon hit some level 1 or 2 rapids. Not too bad. Fun, actually. But this is where I lost my brand new Safari hat. The wind came long and just nonchalantly plucked it off my head, dumping it into the Colorado River. A good portion of the first day was spent cruising on quiet stretches of water, then being doused by rapids ranging anywhere from 2 to 6 (the higher the number the more severe the ride). We kept hearing about Lava Falls and Crystal Rapids . . . and how many people had died while going through those rapids . . . both about 7 or 8 in difficulty. We approached both of them with some trepidation but, as you see, managed to survive.

Being in the canyon, there were no radios, tvs, newspapers, (the Internet was a mere infant at the time) so you’d typically gather around the campfire and about 8:30, maybe 9pm, you’d turn in for the night. best ideas ever. Somehow, I contacted the American River Touring Association and booked a seven day river raft trip down the Colorado River deep within the Grand Canyon. We flew into Las Vegas where we took a van to the put-in point at Parker Dam, Parker, Arizona. We were told to bring sun tan lotion, a hat (I bought a new safari hat which the wind promptly carted off less than a half hour into the trip), any alcoholic beverages we might want (I think I brought a bottle of red wine) . . . swim suit, one or two changes of clothes and some comfortable walking shoes. Most everything else was provided.

price may not exceed $676,000, subject to periodic adjustments.

A Grand Canyon River Trip has to be experienced to truly understand and enjoy. When we put in on the beach around noon time for a lunch break the boatmen/guides do ALL the work. They set up the tables, lay out the silverware, cook the food, serve it up, and do clean up. You don’t have to lift a finger. Many of us, however, chose to help out during feeding times just because it seemed the right thing to do. Menus varied. You’d wake up bright and early to the smell of bacon and eggs frying . . . at noon, you’d typically have sandwiches, perhaps a salad, at night . . oh, boy! Steaks! Hamburgers! Dutch Oven cooked pineapple upside down cake! These guys were masters at turning out food fit for a King and his court.

Mornings were a challenge. After breakfast we’d get underway and while in the shade from the canyon we’d freeze our butts off, then we’d come around the bend and the sun hit us full force and we began to swelter. From time to time we’d be allowed to hop off the raft into the Colorado River and cool down; sometimes, even in rapids (though only about a 1 or 2 level) we’d be allowed to let the rapids carry us downriver after we had exited the safety of the raft. We were told to always wear footwear, usually tennis shoes, keep our feet facing down river so if we hit any rocks we would not be knocked unconscious. These were fun, but a wee bit spooky.

Earthquake from page 3

It was later found that the deadly Los Angeles tremour actually occurred on a “blind thrust fault,” which means there was no visible fault line to see with the human eye, such as can be seen with other faults, like the San Andreas fault line. James Dolan, an earthquake geologist at Cal Tech says, “It was one of those unfortunate instances where we HAD to have an earthquake to discover a new fault line. We didn’t know this fault even existed!” NORTH SAN DIEGO COUNTY COULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED! OUR NETWORK OF FAULTS INTER-CONNECT WITH LOS ANGELES! Adding to these startling discoveries is that San Diego’s Rose Canyon fault lines were thought to be separate from the NewportInglewood faults up north . . . they are actually one, continuous fault-line system which could trigger interconnected earth tremours, according to the ScrippsInstitution of Oceanography at UCSD and the U. S. Geological Man About Town from page 4 Other times we’d beach the raft and go exploring . . . walking old Indian trails, checking out hieroglyphics, sightseeing. One particular favorite of mine was Havasupai Falls . . . a large waterfall emptying into a basin that formed crystal clear water with the most beautiful aquamarine color I’ve ever seen. This was also fresh, clean, clear water so we all got a chance to get a good and welcome bath (the Colorado River itself is quite muddy).

Survey (both studies appeared in the American Geophysical Union’s “Journal of Geophysical Research”). Adding to the vulnerability of Escondido (and all of North San Diego County) was another disturbing discovery: fault lines that were once thought to be (inactive) have proven otherwise in recent years. For example, San Diego State University researchers discovered that San Diego’s Rose Canyon fault line is actually more active than initially thought – a most unexpected surprise! The 101-mile long Rose Canyon Fault Line (once conservatively estimated to be only 30 miles in length) extends from the Mission Valley area and heads past Mt. Soledad and offshore La Jolla where it travels in the Pacific Ocean and joins other faults, such as the Oceanside Fault (previously mentioned at the top of this article). In addition to all these unexpected findings, two previously hidden earthquake fault lines were recently discovered, both of which are just off the coast of San Diego’s North County, and mucky muck with one of the meat packing plants in Chicago and was used to getting his own way and being waited on hand and foot. He was disabused of that status in less than 8 hours. After he got real, he turned out to be a pretty nice guy. And then there was us. Mary and me. We had the time of our lives. One of the best holidays ever. The Vietnam War was still going on but for seven glorious days we didn’t see or hear anything about our young lads being killed and maimed for life; no presidential politics. Just enjoying the great outdoors. No tv or radio. (The boatmen had a satellite phone in Chuckles from page 2 After a brief pause, Daddy says, ‘But honey, you haven’t got an Uncle Paul.’ ‘Oh yes I do, and he’s upstairs in the room with Mommy, Right now.’

There were two boatmen and about four or five couples. I remember one older couple (remember when 65 was old?) from Medford, Oregon . . . an Anesthesiologist and his wife from New Mexico . . . and one really big, important, pompous ass from Chicago. He was a big high

According to the world’s foremost seismologists today: “The city of Los Angeles sits directly on top of a least 100 active earthquake faults, all of which are directly underneath some of the most expensive real estate in the country, as well as being directly underneath densely-populated metropolitan areas, freeways, bridges, buildings, hospitals, schools, power grids and countless critical lifelines.” These newly-discovered fault systems, crisscrossing San Diego and Los Angeles regions, have: “The deadly potential of unleashing a powerful earthquake that would affect the lives of as many as 20-million people,” according to geoscientists. One evening in particular has stayed with me to this day. One of our group, a young lad by name of Ernest Shaw, was a sales rep for Swissair. We were all gathered around the campfire at night when he said he had an announcement to make. “Today is my birthday and to celebrate my birthday I’d like to present to you a gift. To do this, I’d like you all to just stay here by the fire and be quiet . . . my gift will come very soon.” And with that he strolled off into the black darkness, up the canyon . . . and ‘Okay, Daddy, Just a minute.’ A few minutes later the little girl comes back to the phone. ‘I did it, Daddy.’ ‘And what happened, honey?’ ‘Well, Mommy got all scared, jumped out of bed with no clothes on and ran around screaming. Then she tripped over the rug, hit her head on the dresser and now she isn’t moving at all!’ ‘Oh my God!!! What about your Uncle Paul?’ ‘He jumped out of the bed with no

MISSED REGIONAL DAMAGE BY LESS THAN 45 MILES! The Northridge earthquake released deep underground energy so unreal that it even shocked the world’s leading scientists who had studied other worldwide earth-movers, as famed geologist James Dolan was quoted: “From the San Fernando Valley the earth shook and the shockwaves actually travelled underneath . . . (Dolan pauses here in disbelief, and then continues) . . . the shockwaves actually travelled underneath an entire mountain range, devastating buildings in Santa Monica, 18 miles to the south!” Instead of San Fernando Valley, the epicenter was actually in Reseda, California, and the devastation spread out in a radius of over 85 miles (137 km), devastating areas in San Fernando Valley, and as far away as Santa Monica, Hollywood, Simi Valley, and Santa Clarita. Escondido, sitting less than 130 miles southward, narrowly missed the physical destruction Earthquake continued on page 13 soon his powerful voice echoed off the walls of the Grand Canyon as he sang an aria from “Aida.” I never cared much for opera but that night I got goose bumps as I heard him sing. Even now, as I write this, I get goosebumps. And this happened sometime in the mid 70’s, 49 -50 years ago! At my age I’m not sure I’d be up to a repeat trip to the Canyon. Supporting California’s Native Wildlife I introduced AB 1031 in 2017 to establish the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Voluntary Tax Contribution Fund. The legislation allows taxpayers filing their returns to voluntarily ‘check off’ a specified amount to fund wildlife rescue organizations throughout the state. However, since the program expires this year, last week I introduced AB 1828 so that the voluntary wildlife rehab fund can continue until 2032. Since 2018, taxpayers have contributed $2 million through the fund to help support California’s non-profit animal rehabilitation organizations, many of which receive grants through the fund from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, in addition to private donations. Just last year, nearly $320,000 was contributed. These non-profits rescue sick, injured and orphaned wildlife including raptors, songbirds, fawns, bears, coyotes and many other native species. The animals are provided veterinarian treatment when necessary, species appropriate diets, post release monitoring and surveillance along with other care and services. The ultimate aim is to reintroduce the animals back into the wild. The fund also facilitates needed research and habitat conservation for endangered species.

To participate, eligible organizations are required to meet specific guidelines. They must document their status as non-profits operating permitted wildlife rehab facilities along with participation in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Medical Database. More information is available at: https://wildlife. ca.gov/Tax-Donation Many of you know that I am a trained Project Wildlife Native Songbird Rehabilitator, and that animal welfare is a big priority for me. My experiences raising orphaned or injured songbirds and returning them to the wild has guided me in the legislation I introduce and support. In 2017, AB 1031 passed with wide, bipartisan support. I look forward to a similar outcome this year for AB 1828, so that the California Native Wildlife Rehabilitation Volunteer Tax Contribution Fund can continue its mission protecting California wildlife. Against numerous challenges in California with a staggering homeless population, the highest gas prices in the country, exorbitant utility costs, crumbling infrastructure, while facing a $68 billion budget deficit, the decision for free health insurance to undocumented immigrants paid for with taxpayer dollars is unfathomable. Our local resources are meant to address our community’s needs, not fund services for those who have just entered our country. If

the State of California had any common sense, it would halt the free health insurance program for undocumented immigrants and refocus on the pressing needs of Californians. It is time to prioritize our residents first. If you disagree with this program, please get in touch with your local State representatives and let them know how you feel. We must all use our voices and stay engaged in local politics. I will continue to keep you updated on the situation. My bed from Ashley Furniture is missing a few parts. What should I do? What’s wrong with Britt Lane’s bed? And why won’t Ashley Furniture fix it for her? She’s been sleeping on the floor since she ordered the furniture from the retailer. Q: I recently bought a new bed from Ashley Furniture. The company delivered the bed with missing parts. Ashley Furniture has not provided the correct parts to make the bed functional. When I call customer service, the reps hang up or put me on hold indefinitely. I visited the store near me in Joplin, Mo., and asked for a copy of my contract a month after I placed my order because I believe they are in breach of the contract. The store refused to give me a signed copy of the contract. I would like a partial refund on the price of the bed as well as the parts needed to make the bed work. Ashley Furniture has already refunded the delivery charge and setup fee, but it will not adjust the price of the bed. I’ve been sleeping on the floor for more than a month. Can you help me? ~ Britt Lane, Kansas City, Mo. A: Ashley Furniture should have delivered your bed to you when it said it would -- the whole bed. But

of course, you already know that. Ashley should have given you the contract when you bought the bed, so I’m surprised you didn’t already have it. I’m really troubled that the store would not give you a signed contract when you asked for it. There’s a lesson here for all of us: When you buy furniture, or any other big-ticket item like an appliance, make sure you know the terms, and get a copy of your signed contract. Fortunately, some of those terms are already on the Ashley Furniture website. It looks like you ordered Ashley’s “No-Hassle Delivery + Assembly” option, which promises “your items will be delivered, set in your room of choice and, if necessary, assembled.” I reviewed the correspondence between you and Ashley Furniture. It appears you were missing all the parts that hold the bed together, including screws and bolts. So, of course, the driver could not assemble your bed because there was nothing to hold it together. It makes sense that Ashley Furniture would refund your delivery Problem Solved continued on page 12

Historically Speaking NFL History

By Tom Morrow We’re entering the last weeks of the annual playoffs for the National Football League. It’s a ritual even the most disinterested among us gets caught up in as to who’ll be the final two teams to be pitted against each other in next month’s “Super Bowl” extravaganza. A little history about this 102-yearold union is in order. The NFL had its beginnings in a fledgling association formed back in 1920 called the “American Professional Football Association.” Some 10 teams organized in Canton, Ohio, with four more teams joining the new league later that year, rounding out the original NFL teams. The Green Bay Packers is considered the oldest and longest running franchise in NFL history (1919). Those early town teams were made up by residents and businessmen. Today “The Pack” remains

the only community-owned NFL sports organization. No other team can claim and enjoy the loyalty of the “Pack.” My next-door neighbor proudly owns one corporate share of the Green Bay, Wisconsin organization. Hard to come by annual season tickets are traditionally inherited by family members. Getting a ticket to any home game can be a daunting task. The NFL took on its current name in 1922. The oldest of the NFL teams in order of their establishment are: Green Bay Packers (1919), the Chicago Bears (1919), the Racine Cardinals (1920, with stops in Chicago St, Louis, and today’s Arizona), the New York Giants (1925), Detroit Lions (1930), Washington Redskins (1932), and in 1933, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Philadelphia Eagles joined the presentday NFL. These eight are the only member teams left from the original founding, but what has formed today’s league went through a number of changes. The Green Bay Packers hold the most combined NFL championships with 13, winning nine titles before the Super Bowl era and four present-day Super Bowls. Since the creation of the Super Bowl, the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers are tied for the most Super Bowl victories with six each. The reigning league champions are the Kansas City Chiefs, who de-

The Super Bowl, was held four times before the merger, with the NFL winning Super Bowl I and Super Bowl II, and the AFL winning Super Bowl III and Super Bowl IV. After the league merged, it was reorganized into two conferences: the National Football Conference (NFC), consisting of most of the pre-merger NFL teams, and the American Football Conference (AFC), consisting of all of the AFL teams as well as three pre-merger NFL teams.

feated the Philadelphia Eagles in the 57th Super Bowl last year. Only two of those eight “organizing teams,” the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) and the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals), remain in today’s NFL. In 1960 a new professional league, the American Football League (AFL), began to play. The upstart AFL began to challenge the established NFL in popularity, gaining lucrative television contracts and engaging in a bidding war with the NFL for free agents and draft picks. The two leagues announced a merger on June 8, 1966, to take full effect in 1970. In the meantime, the two leagues would hold a common draft and championship game.

Today, the NFL is the most popular sports league in North America – with much of the league’s growth and popularity attributable to former Commissioner Pete Rozelle, who led the league from 1960 to 1989. Overall annual attendance increased from 3 million at the beginning of his tenure to 17 million by the end of his tenure, and 400 million global viewers watched 1989’s Super Bowl XXIII (23). The 1934 season also marked the first of 12 years in which African Americans were absent from playing in the league. The de facto ban was rescinded in 1946, following public pressure and coinciding with the removal of a similar ban in Major League Baseball. In 1970, following the addition Historically Speaking continued on page 14

Escondido-Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club Dedicates New ADA Compliant Playground at Escondido’s Dixon Lake On January 12th, the Kiwanis Club of Escondido – Hidden Valley (KCE-HV) held a special dedication of Escondido’s first “All Inclusive”, fully ADA Compliant, “Boundless” Playground. The dedication ceremony celebrated the collaboration of organizations in North SD County that came together with KCE-HV with a focus for child development and the future of our community. The “dream” surfaced in early 2000, but growth and infrastructure pushed it to the side until 2016. KCE-HV stepped in at that time to coordinate the replacement of a play structure at Dixon Lake that was removed due to age and deterioration. That morphed into greater aspirations, and with the help of the County Board of Supervisors, the Escondido Charitable Foundation, Local Elks and Rotary Clubs, Kiwanis International Childrens Foundation, Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund and local citizens and business interests, the club completed their dream in late 2023. Two phases of the project resulted in a playground where children of all ages and physical abilities can play. Shown at left: ADA compliant portion with the playground structure behind.

Frustrated Travelers Start Recording Customer Service Phone Calls But does it work? There may be a better way.

Oh, the lengths some people will go to get better customer service. Like recording phone calls with a customer service agent.

It shouldn’t be necessary to record calls, possibly in violation of state laws, just to get better service. But that’s the current state of customer service in the travel industry.

Robert Grunfeld, who had a ticket on a United Airlines flight from Newark to Tel Aviv, says a representative offered to rebook him on a flight to Israel if the airline canceled his flight. United then canceled his flight, but refused to rebook him on a nonstop flight to Tel Aviv.

The most customer-friendly companies should already offer instant transcripts and recordings of all customer service phone calls. That way, both sides know what was said in a conversation.

“I’d like United to keep the promise the agent made,” says Grunfield, a student from Monsey, N.Y. Grunfeld then sent me the recording in which a representative did indeed promise to accommodate him. If you want better customer service, recording a call sometimes works, and sometimes it doesn’t. But there’s an even better way to solve this problem, and I’ll share that with you in a minute. Wait, are you allowed to record a phone call with a customer service representative? Hang on. Are you even allowed to record a phone call? It depends on where you are. In New York, where Grunfeld is based, as long as one person is aware the conversation is being recorded, it’s OK. “Generally, it is legal in the U.S. for any participant in the conversation to record the call unannounced,” says John Hooker, professor of business ethics at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business. “Some states require that all the participants consent to recording as well.” If you’re in a state that requires both parties to consent, don’t worry: Before a call center representative picks up, you’ll hear a message that says, “Calls may be recorded for quality assurance purposes.” That gives both the company and you permission to record, say legal experts. The real question is, can you record it? Unfortunately, both iOS and Android place significant restrictions on call recording. Your best bet is to do what Grunfeld did. Put your phone on “speaker” mode and use a separate recorder. Does that really work? It can. Sometimes, recording a phone call

with an airline works. Ben Edelman recalls booking an American Airlines ticket for his wife by phone. An agent described the seat as first class when he meant business class. But when Edelman, who was then a professor in Boston, saw the ticket, he forwarded the conversation to one of the airline’s attorneys. “To his credit, he honored the agent’s statement and moved my wife to first class, consistent with what the agent had said,” he says. “I counted myself lucky that I had recorded that call.” Edelman’s case is rare, experts say. “Airlines typically follow their terms of service, even if an agent has made an error,” says Melissa Copeland, a principal with Blue Orbit Consulting, a service consulting firm. “Hotels and restaurants have more flexibility,” But sometimes, travel companies see recording their calls as a nuisance. Recording a call doesn’t always work. Recording a phone may backfire. Eva Keller remembers working at the front desk of a hotel when a guest claimed to have recorded her promising him an upgrade to a two-bedroom suite. (She hadn’t.) But instead of admonishing her, she says the manager scolded the customer. “My manager explained to him that it’s illegal to secretly record that phone call,” she recalls. “It worked against the guest’s best interest to secretly record and weaponize a phone conversation

because it made the staff aware that he was a difficult and demanding guest, making no one inclined to go out of their way to do him any extra favors.” Recording a call isn’t your only option. Edward Hasbrouck, a travel expert and data privacy activist, says there’s a reason more people are recording phone calls: It’s a gap between what an agent promises on the phone and what they are prepared to do. That’s what happens when you ask an agent to summarize the phone call. “Typically, what they read back will be something less than the verbal promise they made,” he says. If you can’t record a call or just can’t remember what was promised, you’re not out of luck. Hasbrouck recommends asking the agent to make a notation in your reservation. He says it may take a few tries to align the agent’s promises with what’s in your reservation, but ultimately, it can be more effective than telling an airline or hotel that you have a recorded phone call. Hasbrouck used his strategy when his airline changed a flight, necessitating an overnight stay. “I called to confirm whether they would pay for a hotel for that night,” he says. “They said they would, but wouldn’t put it in writing. I got them to note in the PNR -- the passenger name record -- that they had told me they would reimburse me for a hotel night.” And they did.

Maybe it’s also time to update some of the laws that restrict calls from being recorded. Consumer advocates, even those who value consumer privacy, question whether employees need privacy in their phone calls with customers. If states loosened some of their restrictions, it might help customers that either feel that they can’t or don’t have the resources to record a call. Phone manufacturers have a part to play, too. If Android and iOS made it a little easier to record phone conversations, we wouldn’t even need to have this conversation. But ultimately, the only way to fix this is to remove the reason travelers are recording their phone calls. And it’s simple, really: Just provide better customer service. Will a recorded call sway United? I listened to Grunfeld’s call and thought he had a decent chance of getting United to rebook him on an El Al flight. United says it canceled his flight and has offered him a full refund, which airlines are required to do when they cancel a flight. A representative also said that the call center worker was correct -- at one point, United was rebooking passengers on other flights. But the policy had changed. So would a recording help? I asked. But United held firm on its refund offer, even though flights to Tel Aviv were now considerably more expensive than when Grunfeld booked them. Seems that when it comes to making promises from an airline like United, talk is cheap. Elliott’s tips for getting better customer service. Don’t Wait If you experience a customer serRecording continued on page 14

Who is the Reverse Mortgage Designed For

Laura Strickler The reverse mortgage program was designed for homeowners over age 62 to remain in their home, utilizing the equity they’ve built to care for them in their retirement years. That care can come in many forms: paying off an existing mortgage, establishing a line of credit, setting up monthly advances or taking a lump sum of cash. To take advantage of this wonderful government insured loan program, there are some basic requirements that FHA requires from you. 1) At least one borrower must be 62 years of age 2) You must occupy the home 3) You must pay the property expenses (taxes, insurance, home owners association dues) 4) You must maintain the property 5) You must show that you can pay for the property expenses

6) You must receive counseling from an FHA approved counseling agency

the lender. At that point, you can discuss what your options are and the timeline for you to take action.

the form. You should always keep a copy of the form and record when and how it was returned.

These are the requirements. Unfortunately, this past week I have had calls from people who have not paid their property taxes. One instance saw the lender pay property taxes on behalf of the borrower but now wanted to be reimbursed. The other instance the borrower has been living in a care facility for over a year and has not returned the annual occupancy certificate that the lender sent for certification and signature.

It’s very important that you understand that reverse mortgages were designed to allow senior homeowners to age in place in their home. You are advised of that fact when discussing the loan with a loan officer, during counseling and finally when you sign your final loan documents.

There are multiple ways to certify that you are still occupying the home. This is a condition of the loan and should not be taken lightly. You will notice that the form I’ve included states it is the second notice. The lender will send multiple occupancy certificates to you to obtain the required disclosure. If there is no response from you, the borrower, then it’s possible that a site inspector will be sent out. At that time, they may come to the door, but they may also inquire with your neighbors to determine who is living in the home.

These are situations where the borrowers are now receiving notifications of foreclosure. What can be done? Contacting the lender immediately is the first step. Explaining your situation to them is next. What happens after that depends on your specific situation and how the lender can assist you in resolving the problem. Perhaps that can be handled by a refinance of your current reverse mortgage, paying off any delinquent taxes, insurance, etc. Or paying off the funds that the previous lender paid out on your behalf. If you are no longer living in the home, and you have no hope of returning to the home, then the home must be sold and the reverse mortgage paid off. If you are no longer living in the home, you must notify

Following is an example of the Annual Occupancy Certificate sent out by one of the largest loan servicers: CeLink.

Always remember, communication is key with your lenders. If you are facing issues, call them. Or call me if you have a question. Sooner is better than later and putting important issues off only delays the inevitable.

When you receive the Annual Occupancy Certificate, please complete it and mail it to the servicer. You can also register for an online account and submit it that way. You can fax

The Pastor Says . . . What’s New? While we are still in January, it is only fitting to write about newness. Usually, the first month of the year gives us thoughts of renewal and new things. There will be new cars, phones, food, products, clothes, TV, shows, goals, and a US president. We will choose some of these items. Others will be forced upon us by circumstances, such as insurance coverage, taxes, societal changes, business closures, and new government regulations. For the more significant part, we will accept these changes or resist them as stupid. Often, I hear the expression,” Why can’t we keep things the way they were? Life was easier then.” Yet, we know some new things are better. We can begin with a new attitude. Old attitudes can be negative, depressive, and hurtful. To look at life through positive and grateful eyes will make life fulfilling. Having a more inclusive view of other human beings will give more acceptance and appreciation over the racial, ethnic, sexual, and other biases so many people have. To live with this approach would provide us with newness in our communities and remove antisemitism, racial profiling, and bigotry.

So, where do we get this news? Nicodemus came to Jesus two thousand years ago and complimented him for his good deeds. Jesus replied, “ Unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God.” Jesus said you will live as the old one unless you become a new person. If you want a new vision, attitude, and life, you will need the spirit of God that lifts you above the essence of your limited world.

Today, we are living in the spirit of the world. It is a world filled with fear, regret, Ambition, ignorance, and yes, even desire for change, primarily for lower prices, world, peace, and more money. The truth is, life will just be more of the old when we look at it. There is a promise; however, that newness is possible through desire, prayer, And seeking a new life which comes only from God. There is newness if we seek it in the power of his spirit. Nicodemus found it. Will you?

The merger of AI (Artificial Intelligence) with broadband (high speed) Internet in 2001 created the IW (Intelligent Web). High speed Internet has given us nearly instant access to most of human knowledge. AI provides a way to interpret and process this knowledge. Today, little more than two decades since its inception, the IW has changed the way we think, learn and interact more profoundly than any event in human history, and it’s just getting started. Today there are many devices that access internet content, among them Smart TV, Smart Phones, Digital speakers, PCs, watches, tablets, game consoles and GPS trackers. More devices are constantly being added to the list. The percentage of Internet users by age group is fairly

We IW users who grew to adulthood prior to its availability are called DI (digital immigrants). Our socialization and education were accrued through direct experience, our environment and people. Our internal cognitive ability and memory is our basic “go to”. For us, the IW is a resource to be used to build on our internal cognitive and memory resources. Most Americans born in the 1990s and later grew up with the IW. They’re called DNs (Digital Natives). Spending approximately half their waking hours “connected” to the IW provides this Generation with fast access to the growing store of human knowledge and ever improving AI to process it. AI coupled with the Internet’s vast store of knowledge is typically capable of providing faster and better solutions than those available using their own internal cognitive resources. Therefore it makes perfect sense for the DNs to incorporate these external assets as part of their own cognitive abilities. Getting better solutions at lower energy cost is a win/win. Substituting AI for internal cognitive functionality may be causing measurable IQ drops within the younger generation due

to the “use it or lose it” factor, but their hybrid problem solving capabilities are definitely enhanced. We older generations stubbornly stick to a primary reliance on our internal memory and cognitive powers. Though we may use AI everyday in a hundred little ways to make living easier and more efficient, we are still wary of allowing AI to coexist as an equal partner with our own intelligence. We are concerned that AI and the IW are beginning to cause changes in the way our children and grandchildren think and relate to one another. We worry that AI and the IW are

just the beginning of a force that will change human kind in unimaginable ways, and not necessarily for the good! Stop worrying. Que sera, sera. The monumental changes that began two decades ago at the start of the IW are inevitable and well beyond the power of you, me or Elon Musk to materially affect. So live in the present and appreciate the fact that you are among the last generations of humans to have achieved adulthood relying on your own internal cognitive powers to plot your life’s course. Feel free to enjoy easy access to the sum of humanity’s knowledge, ideas and art on the IW. Above all, love and appreciate your family and friends.

Perhaps our biggest Ashley case to date involved a 92year-old customer who also had to deal with a contract problem. I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of Ashley Furniture’s customer service executives on my site, Elliott.org. You might have reminded the unhelpful Ashley Furniture employee of the company’s mission statement, which is to “delight our guests, turn houses into homes and change lives for the better… together.” A half-assembled bed is no way to turn a house into a home. An appeal to one of the executives might have helped move your case along. But also, a request for a partial refund might have been too much. Ashley had already refunded the delivery and assembly fee. It just needed to get you those bolts. I contacted Ashley Furniture on your behalf. A representative called you and set up a time to finish assembling your bed. Two months after your delivery, you emailed me with good news: “I now have the fully assembled and functioning bed that I paid for.” Christopher Elliott is the founder of Elliott Advocacy (https://elliottadvocacy.org), a nonprofit organization that helps consumers solve their problems. 760.445.7502 Ask for Frank Advertise Your Business & Services Earthquake from page 5 perimeter by a scant 45 miles, despite its interconnected network of faults!

www.thecommunitypaper.com

“It took only 6 seconds to release its deadly energy. In only 6 seconds, it derailed trains, 9 freeway bridges were left in shambles, and 4 freeway over-passes were sliced completely in half. And it still wasn’t done!”

In reality, and in geophysical retrospection, the potential danger to Escondido (and all of North San Diego County) back then was much closer than anyone realised at the time!

The earth continued shaking for a full 20 seconds!

The interconnecting network of fault lines, the discovery of new, unknown fault systems, as well as the unexpected level of power causing the earth’s crust to shift 12 miles deep, and the physical alterations in the elevation of mountain ranges between Escondido and Northridge was -- in hindsight -- a very “close encounter” which could have set off a chain-reaction of the most horrifying sort.

If the 1994 Northridge quake had not been so deeply underground (over 12 miles deep), the surface destruction would have been unimaginable!

Few people outside of the scientific community ever knew and comprehended just how close and terrifying and horrific this scenario could have played out for San Diego County! One geologist said in stunned amazement:

As a general rule: the deeper underground the fault line, the less surface damage.

Even China’s recent 2023 earthquake was horrific, but it was only 6 miles deep. The 1994 Northridge quake would have produced “imaginable” damage and death if the fault line was not over 12 miles deep (over twice as deep as China’s). Even the world’s worst earthquake of 2023 in southern Turkey near Syria on 6 February 2023 was nightmarish in its destruction and death toll of 60,000 people -- but the fault line was not as deep as California’s massive Northridge quake which,

literally, added over a foot to the elevation of surrounding mountain ranges! If California’s Northridge quake’s fault line had been closer to the earth’s surface, such as with China’s or Turkey’s earthquakes – God only knows what cataclysmic doom it would have wrecked upon North American soil. HOW CLOSE WAS THE NORTHRIDGE “POWER LEVEL” TO ESCONDIDO & OTHER NORTH SAN COUNTY REGIONS? It was too close, by earthquake standards. Despite being over 12-miles underground, the 1994 Northridge quake’s power and energy moved foremost geologist, Lucy Jones, of the U.S. Geological Survey to state the seemingly impossible: “The underground quake movement was so powerful that it overwhelmed all ground sensors. The earth’s underground -- over 12 miles deep, was moving in so many places at once that we actually thought -- ‘this cannot be real – this must be a glitch in our measurement computer systems!’” Scientist, James Dolan, weighed in:

760-747-7119

“The amount of energy involved in moving a part of the earth’s crust – a crust 12 miles thick – moving that much earth . . . 20feet in a couple seconds . . . is mind-boggling!” For San Diego’s North County region, with its interconnected network of faults – it was a far, far closer call than anyone thought! THE QUAKE ACTUALLY MOVED MOUNTAINS BETWEEN ESCONDIDO & LOS ANGELES! The world’s leading experts say it is virtually impossible – even for trained theoretical scientists – to fully comprehend the following truth: “The Northridge quake, in fact, buckled the earth upwards, adding over one-foot to the elevation of hills and mountains surrounding the northern edge of the city of Los Angeles. Normally, mountains and hills grow only a few millimeters in elevation every 100 years! “In other words, it would norEarthquake continued on page 14

Historically Speaking from page 7 of the former AFL teams into the NFL, the teams split into two conferences with three divisions each. The expanded league, now with twenty-six teams, would also feature an expanded eight-team playoff, the participants being the three division champions from each conference as well as one ‘wild card’ team (the team with the best win percentage that did not win its division) from each conference. In 1978, the league added a second wild card team from each conference, bringing the total number of playoff teams to 10, and a further two wild card teams were added in 1990, to bring the total to 12. When the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002, the league realigned, changing the division structure from three divisions in each conference to four divisions in each conference. These final few weeks before Super Bowl weekend are a little hard to follow if you’re not an avid NFL fan, so get your daily newspaper sports section or keep checking the ESPN TV sports coverage, both which will keep you reasonably informed. While Green Bay is the NFL’s oldest franchise, the Packers are the youngest team player-wise to participate in this year’s playoff series.

Recording from page 8 vice problem, ask a representative for help immediately. Often, airlines, car rental companies and hotels empower their employees to fix a problem in real time. They may offer you a voucher, a better seat or an upgraded room to make up for the trouble. Don’t wait to get home, where you’ll have to deal with a customer service department that may deflect your concern. Get it in writing Ask for any promise a customer service agent makes in writing. The best way to do that is to start an online chat or to email the company. Although companies don’t always automatically honor commitments made in writing, they do so much more frequently than when confronted with a recorded phone call. By the way, don’t forget to save the transcript; you may need it later. When to record a call Many small businesses, like tour operators or bed-and-breakfasts,

lack the resources to record their customer service calls. And some companies -- notably phone and cable companies -- strongly prefer to interact with their customers by phone. If you’re dealing with a business that won’t put anything in writing, you should consider recording the call. But make sure you follow all applicable laws. Christopher Elliott is an author, consumer advocate, and journalist. He founded Elliott Advocacy, a nonprofit organization that helps solve consumer problems. He publishes Elliott Confidential, a travel newsletter, and the Elliott Report, a news site about customer service. If you need help with a consumer problem, you can reach him here or email him at chris@elliott.org.

Earthquake from page 13 mally take (over) 6,000 years to add 12-inches to a mountain’s elevation – the Northridge quake did it in just a few seconds!” Keep in mind, Escondido and North San Diego County are close to fault lines that are interconnected directly with Los Angeles and Orange County! FOOLS, CHARLATANS, AND LIARS. Make no mistake, earthquakes are among the most insidious of natural disasters because they are diabolically unpredictable. Charles Richter (1900-1985), American seismologist and physicist who invented the Richter Scale to measure the strength (magnitude) of earthquakes stated: “Only fools, charlatans and liars predict earthquakes.” Regarding a major, colossal California earthquake, worldrenowned geoscientist, James Dolan, phrases it this way: “We’re going to have earthquakes. Everyone needs to be prepared for an earthquake at any time. We don’t know when it’s going to happen. We don’t know where it’s going to happen. We do know – it will happen.” This thinking applies to the super-catastrophic Big One – the mega-giant California earthquake – which is long, long overdue and now . . . just sits, with fault lines that have accumulated thousands of years of built-up stress . . . just waiting to snap! IS ESCONDIDO A HIGH-RISK REGION FOR A “MAJOR” EARTHQUAKE?

According to the U. S. Geological Survey database: “Escondido, California shows an 87.26% chance of a major earthquake within 50 kilometers (or 31 miles) of Escondido, within the next 30 years.”

Remember, a major earthquake can disrupt services like electricity, water, leaving you isolated, in total darkness, and vulnerable, and which may limit access in and out of the region.

This means it could hit us at anytime within that 30 year span: tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, next decade – no one knows exactly when.

Also, remember, that fire and police departments will be dealing with the most serious situations first and may be unable to respond quickly to issues in your own community.

But, as all seismologists agree: “It is just a matter of time.”

BRIEF LIST OF EMERGENCY ITEMS TO BE STORED

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO? ESCONDIDO’S FIRE DEPT. WEBSITE IS EXCELLENT FOR EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS.

The Escondido Fire Department website gives a list of emergency items you should store away.

Never take life for granted. As the Boy Scout motto has it: “Always be prepared.” If you reside in Escondido, visit the Escondido Fire Department’s website at: https://fire.escondidorisk-in-escondido. For those readers who do not live in Escondido, visit the various websites for your particular city. Start with your local city fire department. They provide information on earthquake basics, securing property, needed supplies & equipment, disaster planning, as well as special needs for: 1. Alzheimer or dementia family members. 2. The disabled. 3. Seniors who live alone. 4. Pets and children. 5. Some websites even have a segment titled, “Talking to Children About Disasters.” DID YOU KNOW? By law, California schools must have emergency plans in place – but, do these emergency plans actually include periodic, simulated disaster drills for your children’s safety? As a responsible parent, you NEED to find out ASAP.

Make a list, such as: (1) At least 3-day supply of non-perishable food. (2) Flashlights w/extra batteries. (3) First Aid kit. (4) Whistle to signal for help. (5) Manual can opener for food. (6) Cell phone w/back-up batteries. (7) Fire extinguisher. (8) Matches in waterproof container. (9) Books, games, puzzles & other activities for children. (10) Be prepared to shelter your family for (at least) 24 hours. (11) In case you’re stranded while driving, keep an emergency kit in your car. (12) Have a meeting place in case family members are separated. Remember, not everyone will be together when an unexpected major quake occurs. CONCLUSION: IS ESCONDIDO PREPARED? One famed geoscientist gives this testimonial: “That the big earthquake is coming is so likely now that I think that we should start behaving as if we know for sure -- so that serious precautions can be taken and emergency plans put into place to help save human lives in the face of natural disaster. “Because, if we do not take these precautions and it happens . . . then, such non-action would prove to be unforgivable in the face of human history.”

In a major earthquake where all electrical power is disrupted and gas mains explode and out-ofcontrol fires engulf entire cities . . . you may be separated, isolated from your children . . . so ask NOW: Does your school have emergency disaster drills? If the schools your kids are attending have emergency plans that do not involve periodic emergency safety practice drills – find out why not. It’s your right to know.
