In 1955, the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Air Force, and defence contractor Lockheed Martin, chose an ultra-remote site in the Mojave Desert of southern Nevada, about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas, to begin testing and developing the newest, most advanced aircraft in the world, which continues to this day in 2024.
AREA 51.
Long regarded as one of America’s most mysterious top secret locations,
Area 51 has spawned more conspiracy theories than any other place on Earth in regards to strange UFO activity and alien life forms rumoured to have been recovered from extraterrestrial crash sites – piquing the interest of all Americans.
It is a highly classified facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range, officially called Homey Airport or Groom Lake, but more commonly known by its colourful sobriquet, “Dreamland” or by its most popular colloquial tag of “Area 51.”
AREA 51 EMPLOYEES TRAVEL TO-AND-FROM WORK ON
“MYSTERIOUS UNMARKED AIRCRAFT.”
For decades, Area 51 didn’t even appear on any public map, and the U.S. government didn’t even admit it existed.
Unknown to virtually everyone today is that Area 51 is so secret that employees travel to-and-from the highly classified U. S. Air Force facility at Groom Lake -- onboard special, mysterious aircraft.
Area 51 employees use two unmarked planes to fly in-and-out of a (restricted) terminal at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid
International Airport (formerly McCarran International Airport). These highly-classified, unmarked, U. S. government aircraft are officially operated by the U.S Department of the Air Force and act as an employee shuttle to-and-from Dreamland.
The two mysterious Area 51 “employee aircraft” have special code names, “Janet” and “Janet Airlines,” and they are permitted to fly through the highly restricted airspace known as R-4808N, which is above Area 51.
No other civilian, or unauthorised U.S. military aircraft are permitted

overhead. If any unauthorised aircraft should mistakenly wander near this Area 51 “no fly zone” – they are immediately contacted via emergency radio frequency and advised to change heading. Area 51 may even “scramble” armed military airborne interceptors to escort the aircraft elsewhere – where it may be grounded and inspected. Steep fines and permanent loss of license to fly may be invoked.
Even large signs are posted miles around the perimeter of Area 51 warning all unauthorised vehicles that non-compliant intruders may suffer fatal consequences, such as with the following admonishment:
“WARNING. Restricted Area. It is unlawful to enter this area without permission of the Installation Commander. Use of deadly force authorized.”
PUBLIC SUSPICION OF AREA 51 HARBOURING ALIEN SPACECRAFT & TECHNOLOGY.
Area 51 has begat a variety of Star Trek arsenal which includes various futuristic aircraft, such as the top secret “Bird of Prey” stealth aircraft by Phantom Works. The aircraft’s name is in reference to the Klingon “Bird of Prey” which has a cloaking device which renders the warship invisible from the Star Trek television series.
All of which adds further public

suspicions that these quantum-leap advancements in cutting-age aerial phenomena are all based on “reverse engineering” from space alien technology retrieved from alleged extraterrestrial crash sites.
The suspected retrieval of alien technology from the so-called flying saucer crash site near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 is a very muddled and conflicting story. Nevertheless, the late U.S.
Army Lt. Colonel Philip J. Corso, who was President Eisenhower’s most trusted science advisor, and member of the National Security Council in the 1950s – it was Corso who was assigned to Research and Development at the Pentagon.
Shortly before his death at age 83, Lt. Colonel Philip J. Corso, ostensibly, wished to clear his conscience by confirming in his personal memoirs that there was, in truth, a UFO crash near Roswell, New Mexico, and that he was involved in “reverse engineering” whereby alien technology was “decoded” for U.S. industry, at large. Corso admits the U. S. government’s shocking role in the Roswell incident: what was found; the coverup; and how they used alien artifacts to change the course of twentiethcentury history.
In his memoir which he wanted published in book form for posterity, Lt. Colonel Corso, in part, also stated:
“Artifacts harvested from the spacecraft led to today’s integrated circuit

chips, fiber optics, lasers, and stealth technology.”
Today, stealth technology plays a key role in military warplanes.
According to Corso and others, “reverse engineering” from retrieved alien technology was a widespread practise across America’s most secret military installations – and Groom Lake aka Area 51 certainly would play a paramount role.
Area 51 would, indeed, produce history’s first stealth aircraft, designed to evade enemy detection and thereby making it, virtually, “invisible” to radar and other electronic sensors, reminiscent of the fictitious space aliens: the Klingons and their “Bird of Prey” from television’s wildlypopular Star Trek series.
The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk, a single seat, twin-engine jet fighter-bomber was the first operational stealth aircraft which took to the skies in 1981. And the first “operational unit” became capable in 1983.
The F-117’s design was based on the concept of reducing its radar cross section to roughly that of a bird.
On the world stage, all nations across the planet were shocked, viz. Communist China and Russia, at America’s futuristic breakthrough in stealth technology.
And seemed to come to fruition. And Lt. Colonel Philip J. Corso would die in peace with a clear conscience on 16 July 1998, a year and one

I get irritated when people come down on our police officers, saying that they don’t care about or respect others. Well, here is a story that clearly shows not all cops are in that category.
This story involves the police department in the small hill country town of Fredericksburg, TX who reported finding a man’s body last Saturday, in the early evening, in the Pedernales River near the state highway-87 bridge. The dead man’s name would not be released until his family had been notified.
month after his “tell all” book was published, titled “The Day After Roswell,” in which he confesses how he was complicit in the shameful U.S. government “cover-up” and admits how he spearheaded the U.S. Army’s “reverse-engineering” project that –to reiterate -- led to integrated circuit chips, fiber optics, lasers and . . . stealth technology.
(“The Day After Roswell,” book by Philip Corso, First Edition 1997.)
Other, newer stealth aircraft evolved, giving the U.S. Air Force effective military fighter/bombers that could, possibly, attack high-value targets without being detected by enemy radar.
This was a “game-changer” which allowed stealth aircraft to penetrate deeper into enemy airspace without being intercepted.
For security reasons, the U.S. government officially denied any knowledge of their stealth aircraft. The F-117 was, in fact, a “black project” (i. e. its existence denied by all military and government officials).
Even after the aircraft first flew in 1981 and after it achieved full operational capability in 1983, it was still kept under the strictest of secrecy for years.
When it entered military service in May of 1984 during President Rea-

gan’s administration, the “stealth aircraft programme” was still kept secret for years to come.
Even after its entry into military service, the F-117 was not (publicly) acknowledged until 10 November 1988 during which the U.S. public was first, officially (informed) of the programme’s existence.
The following year, the F-117 stealth fighter was first used (in combat) on 19 December 1989 during “Operation Just Cause” in Panama.
Even though the public was made aware of its existence since 1988, the F-117 Nighthawk did not make its first formal (physical public appearance) until 1990.
By this time, the aircraft had already been secretly operational for seven years.
It has since been retired (and used for training purposes only) with the advent of a newer generation of advanced stealth aircraft, such as the F-22 Raptor, to give but one example.
DECLASSIFIED “TOP SECRET” FILES REVEAL PRESIDENT JOHN F. KENNEDY WAS CONCERNED OVER UFOs.
In a recently declassified memorandum dated 12 November 1963 and stamped “TOP SECRET,” President John F. Kennedy sent a message to the Central Intelligence Agency under the subject:
“Classification Review of All UFO Intelligence Files Affecting National Security.”
President Kennedy’s memo raised grave concerns over UFO activity which could endanger world peace by being mistakenly identified as incoming nuclear ICBMs, for both the Soviet Union and the United States.
Kennedy’s memo proposed a mutual programme of recognition of UFOs between both countries and ends his memorandum with: “This will help mission directors in their defensive responsibilities.”
Sadly, before Kennedy’s UFO programme could be initiated, he would be assassinated 10 days after submitting the above CIA memo.
HIGH PROFILE U.S. OFFICIALS: BREAKING THEIR SILENCE ON UFOs.
In more recent years, other highranking people have broken their silence on the erstwhile taboo subject of UFOs and extraterrestrial life forms and alien spacecraft.
1. In 1971, Apollo 14 Astronaut, Capt. Edgar D. Mitchell said:
“We all know that UFOs are real. All we need to ask is where do they come from?”
2. In a letter to the United Nations, in 1978, Mercury 7 Astronaut, Col. Gordon Cooper stated:
“I believe that these extraterrestrial vehicles and their crews are visiting this planet from other planets and are obviously more advanced than we are . . .”
3. In a declassified memorandum written on 10 July 1947, and released under the Freedom of Information Act, FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover, expressed a complaint that the U.S. Army denied the FBI access to crashed UFOs. In part, J. Edgar Hoover states:
“We must insist upon full access to disks recovered. In the case of the Army, they grabbed it and would not let us have it for cursory examination.”
4. And former USSR leader, Mikhail Gorbachev was quoted as saying:
“The phenomenon of UFOs does exist, and it must be treated seriously.”
(Translated from Soviet Youth Magazine, 4 May 1990.)
5. U.S. President Richard Nixon was more blunt:
“I’m not at liberty to discuss the government’s knowledge of extraterrestrial UFOs at this time. I am still, personally, being briefed on the subject.”
It has been postulated that if the United States government does, indeed, have physical information of UFO vehicles and their occupants, this information would exist at the very highest possible level of security, even more so than our nuclear or atomic weaponry.
On 20 November 2003, between 9:00 and 9:20 a.m., radar from the FAA and NORAD detected unknown radar targets referred to as UFOs within restricted airspace above the White House during which President George W. Bush and First Family were ordered to evacuate to an underground bunker below the White House.
NORAD scrambled two U.S. fighter aircraft to engage but the UFOs “shot-off” at an astonishing and unbelievable supersonic speed. Fox News, Reuters, and CNN all covered the story.

“Are you dating currently?”
“No, not really.”
“Do you have any girlfriends?” (A somewhat startled look. She looks at Evelyn and back at me. I sense I’ve innocently stumbled into a tripwire).
“You know,” I sez, “gals you go shopping with, gals you hang with?”
“Oh, no, not really,” she sez.
This happened back in 2010 . . .
I’m guess I’m behind the times.
Act I, Scene I: I write a glowing review about the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, California. It focuses on a local gal who is part of the cast. Within the story I mention that while she has been doing this for years she will temporarily withdraw from the cast due to the high cost of gas and the 150 mile daily round-trip required, the related cost of $800-$1000 she incurred, the fact that she is a volunteer and neither paid nor reimbursed expenses. I also mention
There was absolutely no sexual connotation to the use of the word “girlfriend.” None. It was simple statement of fact, as I understood it to have been related to me by both the young lady in question as well as her parents. I felt shocked; like I had been slapped in the face. The story praised both the production as well as the young lady. I had researched the story heavily, spent hours preparing it. An ingrate, I thought. I felt betrayed by the gal.
Fast Forward to Act II, Scene I: Evelyn and I are having lunch with a former client and good friend, a dazzingly beautiful blonde gal. I happen to think of the Festival of the Arts, a showcase closely related to the Pageant of the Masters. I remember I have a number of VIP passes that are good through August. I ask our lunch companion...
“Well, I have some VIP passes to the Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach. I hate to see them go to waste and I thought you and a companion might want to be our guest. Perhaps you and your daughter could use them?”
That, in essence was the conversation.
In the olden days, back when Roy Rogers was King of the Cowboys, when Fleers BubbleGum was cool, and when Flash Gordon ruled outer space, it was perfectly common to talk about a woman and her ‘girlfriends.’ Quite often Evelyn will go to parties and other functions with her ‘girlfriends.’ Usually, sorority sisters . . . but girlfriends nonetheless. It is not an uncommon reference. (Much less common is a reference to “boyfriends” in referring

to “pals” or “buddies” of guys).
But the times . . . well, they be a’changin’ . . . and the meaning of words apparently have changed. A happy and “gay group” means quite a different thing than it did 30 years ago. Apparently a “girlfriend” can now mean something totally different than the original intent. I predict the use of the word “girlfriend” is likely to fall out of favor in common conversation and will be generally restricted to conversations dealing with hot, steamy sex.
I shall have to learn to use the term “girlfriend” judiciously.
It’s a sign of the times.

2023 the U.S. Congress Oversight and Accountability subcommittee hearing on UFOs was televised as a gesture of “transparency.”
The highly anticipated event was open to the public; people waited for hours to secure a spot at the Congressional hearing.
Under sworn testimony before the U. S. Congress, Ryan Graves (executive director of Americans for Safe Aerospace) and retired Air Force Major David Grusch, and retired U.S. Navy Commander David Fravor, were all sworn-in, and answered direct Congressional questions on what they knew about the UFO phenomena.
Ryan Graves has since founded Americans for Safe Aerospace, a group that supports aviators who have reported UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomenon). He stated that the objects that are reportedly being seen by military and commercial pilots “are performing maneuvers that are unexplainable due to our current understanding of our technology and our capabilities as a country.”
He added: “If everyone could see the sensor and video data I witnessed, our national conversation would change.”

I cringed as I watched this 1944 film - not so much at the movie but at the dialogue.
“Did people really talk like that?” I wondered? The dialogue was . . . sappy.
Using the movie dialogue as a guide I prepared the following scenario:
INTERIOR, EVELYN MADISON MANSION:
lyle: “Well, Evelyn, this is it. I’ve got my orders, bags are packed, my plane is ready and I’m on my way to help defeat the Evil Empire.”
evelyn: (touching lyle tenderly on the shoulder) “Oh, Johnny, please come back safe and sound! I simply could not live without you!”

The most anticipated remarks, however, came from a former militaryintelligence officer named David Grusch, who went public with his account that elicited gasps from the public who were present, along with members of Congress.
Knowing full-well that he was under oath and that his testimony must be true, by the letter of the law, Grusch told the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security that the American government has spent decades secretly recovering mysterious vehicles that have crashed on the ground, and has determined the material to be of “non-human” origin. He also testified that the U.S. government also attempted to reverse engineer some of the technology from alien spacecraft. And that the government is doing all of this clandestinely, without proper supervision by Congress, Grusch testified.
Much of the discussion centered on improving accountability for reporting UFOs or UAPs (unidentified anomalous phenomenon).
There were also calls to remove the

Retired Maj. David Grusch, who went from being part of the Pentagon’s UAP Task Force to becoming a whistleblower, told the House Oversight Committee that he had been denied access to some government UFO programmess but that he knows the “exact locations” of UAPs in U.S possession.
“That was the assessment of people with direct knowledge on the (UAP) programme I talked to, that are currently still on the programme,” Grusch added.
While he refrained from sharing any further information in the public hearing, Grusch offered to disclose details behind closed doors.
Grusch said he hasn’t personally seen any alien vehicles or alien bodies, and that his opinions are based on the accounts of over 40 witnesses he interviewed over four years in his role with the UAP task force.
“My testimony is based on information I have been given by individuals with a longstanding track record of legitimacy and service to this country -- many of whom also shared compelling evidence in the form of photography, official documentation, and classified oral testimony,” Grusch said, adding that the trove of

SAN DIEGO’S 2004 UFO INCIDENT RAISES GRAVE CONCERN OVER U.S. SECURITY & PUBLIC SAFETY.
Although famed astrophysicist, Neil de Grasse Tyson, does not yet subscribe to inter-planetary visitors, his admonition on what occurred off San Diego’s coastline was clearly one of concern:

Neil de Grasse Tyson’s viewpoint pertained to a Pentagon’s leaked classified UFO file and video which showed an eerie UFO encounter off the coast of San Diego that would grab international headlines.

The July summer recess is over –we re-convened on August 5th. All bills that passed the Senate before the recess will now be reviewed and approved (or not) by the Assembly, and all Assembly bills have been forwarded to the Senate for final consideration.
During the July recess, the Governor signed about 80 bills that had already made it to his desk. Over 1,500 bills are still pending, so it’s likely the Governor will receive hundreds more by the time we adjourn. Any legislation with a significant financial impact on the state budget must pass each house’s Appropriations Committee, and that’s most bills. These committees hear more bills than any others -- the Senate and Assembly Appropriations Committees are likely to hear about 700 bills each in August. Passing Appropriations can be a high hurdle, and Appropriations is last step before a final floor vote in each house.
Bills awaiting final Senate approval include one of mine, AB 1819, which authorizes counties to create special infrastructure financing districts in high or very high fire hazard severity zones, much like capital improvement districts that are allowed under current law. These district
would fund wildfire mitigation apparatus and infrastructure including new heavy equipment to clear vegetation, create firebreaks, and harden utility infrastructure against wildfires. In August, I’m also looking forward to final Assembly approval for SB 1074, which I co-authored with Senator Brian Jones. The bill, which makes public safety a priority for placement of Sexually Violent Predators, is one of the bills now pending in the Assembly Appropriations Committee and affects our East County district significantly.
All legislative business in the current session must be concluded by August 31st, the date we finally adjourn. New legislation cannot be introduced until after the 2025-2026 session begins on December 2nd, and no legislation can be held over for next session. Any bill that doesn’t receive final approval by the time we adjourn has died. August will be a busy month in Sacramento.

Last week, Governor Newsom issued an executive order directing local cities and municipalities to clean up homeless encampments. While we can all agree with the words, this sudden directive feels like an attempt to deflect responsibility. For years, we have been working diligently to tackle homelessness in our community, but state laws and the Governor’s policies have often tied our hands, preventing us from taking effective action when individuals refuse services.
Now, without providing any additional funding, resources, or facilities, the Governor expects us to resolve the problem he had a major part in creating. It’s hypocritical to demand local governments clean up these encampments without acknowledging the role the state’s decisions—such as releasing individuals from jails and state hospitals—have played in exacerbating the issue. It’s disingenuous to lay blame at the feet of local authorities when we’ve been constrained by state policies and left without the necessary tools to manage the crisis.
It’s time for the Governor to take responsibility for the consequences of his policies. If he’s serious about addressing homelessness, he must

A: I’m sorry your cruise ended with you confined to quarters with Covid. That’s no fun. But I’m happy to hear the Holland America crew took care of you. That care should have extended to your followup, when you asked for your medical records.
But wait a minute. Holland America should have provided you with medical records at the time of your treatment -- and if not then, when you paid for the medical service.
Your case is an important reminder to collect all medical records im-
mediately after you’ve seen a doctor on board. You’ll need them to file an insurance claim. Insurance companies have to see your medical records and a bill in writing if you have any hope of getting refunded. I’ve seen too many travel insurance claims that went nowhere because of insufficient records. Don’t let that happen to you (but don’t worry, you’re in good hands with my advocacy team).
It appears all record requests are handled through Holland America’s parent company, Carnival. Carnival also has a page on its site that allows you to submit questions after your cruise, although it’s unclear if that applies to Hol-

Thank you for your continued support as we advocate for meaningful change and hold our leaders accountable. We will continue fighting for the resources and policies needed to address this crisis.

land America customers. It looks like you also tried to call Holland America. Calling would be less helpful; you were right to keep everything in writing.
I think you were more than patient with Holland America. You waited 10 months before contacting my advocacy team and me, which is about 9 months longer than I would have waited. You could have enlisted the help of your travel advisor to get the documents. If that didn’t work, you could have also reached out to one of the Holland America executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.
I contacted Holland America on your behalf. Within a few hours, it sent the records you had requested.

The national personification of the United States federal government was the creation of a U.S. Army recruiting poster during World War I. James Montgomery Flagg’s 1917 poster was based on the original British Lord Kitchener poster of three years earlier. It would go on to be used to recruit American soldiers for both World War I and World War II. Flagg used a modified version of his own face for “Uncle Sam,” and Army veteran Walter Botts provided the pose.
Using the same initials as our national symbol “Uncle Sam” is a common national personification of the federal government or the country in general. Since the early 19th century, “Uncle Sam” has been a popular symbol of the U.S. government in American culture and a manifestation of patriotic emotion.
According to legend, the character first
came into use during the War of 1812 and may have been named for Samuel Wilson, an American meat packer who lived in Troy, New York, whose name is purportedly the source of the personification of the United States known as “Uncle Sam.” The actual origin is obscure. The first reference to “Uncle Sam” in formal literature outside from newspapers was in the 1816 allegorical book “The Adventures of Uncle Sam.”
While the figure of “Uncle Sam” specifically represents the government, the female figure of “Columbia” represents the United States as a nation. The earliest known personification of the United States was as a woman named Columbia, who first appeared in 1738, and sometimes was associated with another female personification, “Lady Liberty.”
“Uncle Sam” finally appeared after the War of 1812. “Columbia” appeared with either “Brother Jonathan” or “Uncle Sam,” but her use declined as a national person in favor of “Liberty,” and she was effectively abandoned once she became the mascot of Hollywood’s Columbia Pictures in the 1920s.
The precise origin of the “Uncle Sam” character is unclear, but a popular legend is that the name “Uncle Sam” was
derived from Wilson, who supplied meat rations for American soldiers during the War of 1812. There was a requirement at the time for contractors to stamp their name and where the rations came from onto the food they were sending. Wilson’s packages were labeled “E.A.-U.S.” When someone asked what those initials stood for, a co-worker jokingly said, “Elbert Anderson (the contractor) and ‘Uncle Sam,’” referring to Wilson, though the U.S. actually stood for “United States.”
Doubts have been raised as to the authenticity of this story, as the claim did not appear in print until 1842. Additionally, the earliest known mention definitely referring to the metaphorical “Uncle Sam” is from 1810, predating Wilson’s contract with the government. A clockmaker in an 1849 comedic novel explains “... we call...the American public ‘Uncle Sam,’ as you call the British ‘John Bull.”

What happened to my $3,157 flight credit? And how do I use it?
Vicky Cordes is trying to use a $3,157 airline ticket credit from the pandemic. But her travel advisor, wholesaler and airline are all pointing fingers at each other. Who’s got her money?
Q: I’m trying to use a $3,157 credit for a Virgin Atlantic flight canceled during the pandemic. But I’m not sure who has the money.
I booked the flight through a travel agency called GBV Travel Services, and the payment went through Expedia.
I’ve tried everything. Just last month, I logged 40 hours on the phone trying to get this resolved. I’ve been transferred from one department to another, but there’s no resolution in sight.
Each party claims the tickets are owned by the other and must be rebooked on their site. But here’s the problem: I have until the end of the year before the credits expire. So the clock is ticking. Can you help?
~ Vicky Cordes, Miromar Lakes, FL
A: Your case is easy -- and hard. Very hard.
The easy part is who is responsible. You worked with a travel advisor, who is ultimately on the hook for your ticket and your flight credit.
The hard part? Getting everyone on the same page and finding your $3,157 airline ticket credit. And I have to warn you, this one is messy.
It looks like GBV Travel Services is a travel agency that sells annual memberships. It appears you could not reach GBV Travel Services because you had not paid it $199 to renew your membership fee.
By the way, I’m deeply skeptical of any company that offers discounts on travel in exchange for a membership fee. I’ve just seen too many scams involving expensive memberships in exchange for discounts. (Most legitimate travel advisors charge a consulting fee for booking a trip, but do not sell memberships.)
My advocacy team tracked down someone at GBV and asked about your credits. It was not easy, and this took some insider knowledge and tenacity, but my colleague Dwayne Coward alerted GBV to the issue.
GBV contacted you and said your $3,157 was alive and well and that you could contact the company to use it.
Your case raises an interesting question: Can a business simply claim your ticket credit if you don’t pay your membership fees? I don’t think that’s right. But it looks as if some travel advisors believe otherwise.
In the future, I would look for a professional travel advisor through the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). I also have a free guide on how to find a travel advisor on my website, Elliott.org.
And one more piece of advice: I would use your ticket credit as soon as possible.

On a recent trip to Paris, John Smaistrla was just a bump away from becoming a pickpocket victim.
“I was in the back car of the Métro Line 3, which was rocking pretty good at each turn,” he remembers.
That’s when Smaistrla, a civil engineer from Houston, noticed another passenger bumping up against him. He didn’t think anything of it until he got off the train and noticed that the zippers in his pants pocket were halfway down.
The thief had just missed his wallet.
Petty crimes like pickpocketing are a growing problem for travelers.
The U.S. embassy in Paris reports that about 2,000 Americans report their passports stolen every year, many as the result of pickpockets operating in areas frequented by tourists.
“Pickpockets assume that tourists carry lots of cash and that they are sufficiently preoccupied with their unfamiliar surroundings to be vulnerable,” the embassy notes on its site.
“Tourists are easy targets for scammers, pickpockets and thieves,” explains Harding Bush, associate director of security operations at Global Rescue, a provider of risk management services. And, although there are no reliable statistics on crime against tourists, there’s plenty of anecdotal evi-
dence that the problem is getting worse.
A recent Global Rescue survey found that travelers use a variety of techniques to protect their valuables. Men favored splitting their cards, IDs and cash to prevent losing everything, while a majority of
women favored a crossbody purse or bag. Men also generally preferred using zippered pockets.
The Secret To Pickpocket Prevention: Zippered Pockets
How did Smaistrla evade the Paris pickpocket? He was wearing a pair of shorts made especially for travelers by a company called Clothing Arts. They feature triple secure pockets, with zippers and buttons.
“The thief was only able to get past the first two levels of security,” he says.
That’s not to say pickpockets can’t get into your zippered pockets. William Muller, a restaurant manager from Miami, says several sharply dressed thieves swiped his wallet from his raincoat on a train in Madrid.
“I don’t know how they were able to extract my wallet from the zippered pocket,” he says. “But they are most excellent pickpockets.”
Since then, he’s also found more robust zippered and buttoned pants

and jackets that make stealing his valuables almost impossible. But it was a hard lesson learned -- a simple zipper isn’t enough of a deterrent.
Why is pickpocketing a problem now?
Why does everyone want to get inside your pocket? Part of the reason is that you’re making it so easy. I lived in Europe this summer and watched tourists crowding into the popular places. I couldn’t believe that people were putting their wallets into their back pockets -- or as my security expert Kevin Coffey calls it, their “sucker pocket” -- where any halfway-able pocketpicker can lift it.
But that’s not the only problem. “Many criminals now target phones instead of wallets,” says Chris Pierson, CEO of BlackCloak, a digital executive protection company that protects high-net-worth individuals. “In most cases, the criminals will target someone after watching them enter their passcode on the phone, so they can access the device.”
His advice: Always shield your hands when you type in your pass-
code. Better yet, use biometric sign-ins instead. But remember: They want your phone.
How to avoid pickpockets and stay safe on your next trip.
Before I go any further, a warning: There’s no way to ensure 100 percent security when you’re traveling. But there are prudent steps you can take now to get close to it.
Read up on the sites you plan to visit and the type of scams to watch for, says John Gobbels, chief operating officer of Medjet. “Some of them are quite elaborate,” he adds. The best pickpockets wait for the right moment to strike -- a crowded bus, a monument where everyone is likely to be distracted, or a place where tourists are drinking alcohol. “Watch your alcohol intake,” warns Gobbels.
Lock It Down
Patricia Hernandez, an independent travel agent and an expert travel advisor with TeachMe.To, just heard from one of her clients who had his wallet swiped on the Paris Metro. She’s doubled down on recommending robust antitheft gear such as cross-body purses, money belts and pickpocket-proof
bags. “Also,” she says, “be aware of your surroundings.”
Avoid Places Pickpockets Go
Pickpockets thrive in crowded spaces where tourists go. And their favorite maneuver is distraction, like bumping into someone or spilling coffee. “Distraction crime is a leading reason travelers are losing time and money abroad,” says Carrie Pasquarello, CEO of Global Secure Resources, a travel security firm. “Proper preparation and knowledge can mitigate potential risks.” And by proper preparation, she means avoiding the places where all the pickpockets go and staying away from the crowds where they ply their dark trade.
The best pickpocket advice: Become Invisible To The Criminals
But perhaps the best way to avoid being a victim of petty theft is to not look like a victim. Don’t walk around town looking clueless, staring at the attractions and speaking loudly in English, which makes you an easy mark.
“Try to dress in a way that does not make you stand out as a tourist,” says Katalin Parti, a cybercrime expert at Virginia Tech. “Avoid flashy jewelry, expensive accessories, and clothes that are too different from the local style.”
That’s one of the most difficult
things for visitors to do, especially when they’re abroad. Leave the comfortable but blingy sneakers at home. Keep the flashy, logoed sweatshirt and the MAGA cap (if you have one) in the closet, and try to blend in with everyone else.
I avoid bright colors -- actually, my entire wardrobe is black -- and I have a few pairs of Clothing Arts pants. I never keep valuables in my back pocket, but if I do, there’s a button, a zipper and an extra pocket that the pickpocket has to get through. But mostly, I stay away from the touristy areas.
Every purse-snatching, ever pickpocketing, begins with a victim being sized up. Maybe they’re talking American English loudly with their companions. Maybe they’re wearing baggy jeans or carrying a big camera. If you want to protect yourself, get rid of all that.
In other words, stop looking like such a tourist.

There are many things I should do. I should answer the stack of letters I have on my desk. I should get more intensive exercise such as swimming, walking, and posture sitting and standing. I should give more time to meditation. I should read more inspiring books and watch less TV. I should be more involved with others. I should be more charitable to worthy causes. I should be more disciplined in my emotions and attitudes. I should spend more time writing these articles for the PAPER. The list goes on and on with the shoulds, such as praying more, eating better, and keeping better records. So why don’t I? I don’t because I procrastinate. I find it easier to not do these things, at least for right now. Instead, I postpone them, believing I can wait until tomorrow or a more favorable time.
The truth is, however, there might not be another time. I think of everything I could have said or done for my wife and children, but now, those opportunities have passed. How often did I avoid saying “I love you or thank you” or listening to someone who needed a piece of my time? There is always another time, or we are too busy. The question is, do time and opportunity wait for us? Perhaps, in some cases, they do. The sad part is that we miss so many important things because we procrastinate.
Not planning for the future with a definite schedule of saving and investing is irresponsible. To delay or ignore one’s obligation with plans for arrangements in one’s death is to deny the reality of death. To avoid the responsibility of asset distribution with a will or trust is to burden the survivors. To leave unfinished compliments and gestures of love for those closest to us is to shortchange a relationship, especially a wife, husband, or children.
Spiritually, procrastination is the worst thing one can do. I often hear that one can get serious with God later when deciding to follow that path, whether it be an act of repentance or accepting Christ. So many wait until the opportunity is available. It is better to act NOW than to WAIT. In my own life, I have found it foolish to put it off if the door of opportunity is open. Procrastination is as big a sin as any other of our many sins. Often, we fail to see it that way. So don’t delay, but please act today.

The day my mom went “round the bend” It was a Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1951 but I remember it like yesterday. Dad was reading the paper in the living room and mom had just returned from shopping. My brother and I put away groceries while mom unpacked the eight place setting of “unbreakable” Melmac dinnerware she had purchased at Vigran’s General Merchandise Emporium in downtown Richmond, Indiana. The sales clerk had provided a convincing demonstration of “Melmacs” indestructibility by hurling a dinner plate to the floor with great vigor. To the wide eyed amazement of the gathered gaggle of Hoosier housewives, the plate bounced twice and came to rest unscathed. That was enough for mom. With three highly destructive growing kids at home, mom immediately bought the complete set.
I like dogs. I like cats, too, but I’m allergic to cats, so I prefer dogs.
Join dog lovers across the country this month to celebrate National Dog Month including National Dog Day on the 26th.
Dogs are the #1 most-commonlyowned pets on the planet. One report said that there are more cats than dogs in America, but since cat owners are more likely to have
At home Mom carefully separated and laid out the entire set on the dining room table then stood back to admire her triumph. She then called to dad in the living room. When dad walked in mom bowed and with a flourish stepped aside to reveal the sparkling new dishware. We all watched dad as the smile of approval slowly spread across his face. The, without a word, Mom picked up one of the large dinner plates. Holding it in both hands, she showed for all to see that this was simply an ordinary dish picked randomly from the set. Then she slowly raised the dish above her head, smiled at dad, then dashed it to the floor. It shattered in a thousand pieces. We all stood silently looking at the shattered remnants on the floor for several seconds. Only Mom knew that this was not the anticipated out come. Then Dad slowly raised his eyes to look at Mom who was still staring at the floor. Dad then quietly and calmly said, “honey, you’ve gone round the bend”. Dad then turned back to his paper and the living room.
We boys grew to adulthood with the now seven place settings of Melmac. It was used for everyday dishware as well as Sunday dinner too. We never broke another piece and the dish breaking incident became part of family lore.
The sit down Sunday dinner once was a widely observed tradition in America and much of the Western World. It was prepared, presented and served by the women of the household. It was a “time to shine” for the women who reigned supreme as managers of household affairs. The “Sunday best’ often included legacy recipes and heirloom
silver, china and tableware. Preparing, serving and cleaning up after Sunday dinner was an important all day job eagerly and willingly accepted by these household managers. Their skilled efforts earned them heartfelt appreciation and gratitude from happy well served family and guests. It was a different time in America.
In the 20th century women moved into the work force. Household management and child rearing was increasingly shared or hired out Traditional extended family events like Sunday family dinners gave way to less labor intensive activities. The “Sunday” dishes and silver gathered dust in the china cabinet. As older generations died off, their heirlooms were often sold at auctions. Nome and I were raised in the American Midwest “auction belt”. On weekends there were
always several household auctions. We even bought our first two homes at public auctions. Between 1965 and 1980 we lived in Indiana, Minnesota and Ontario, Canada. We often attended local auctions on the weekends buying collectibles, mostly dishware. The vast majority of our “collectibles” have been cluttering our closets and gathering dust for years. No more.
We’ve opened up a 1000 square foot area in The Computer Factory to start de-cluttering our home.
We’ve given this effort the working title of “Hoosier Heirlooms”. We’ll be stocked and ready to rock and roll by the time the paper comes out on Thursday August 8th allowing you to be among the first to see these great bargains. If the idea takes off, perhaps we can expand it to include your household clutter too!

are more homes with at least one dog.
Scientific studies prove that, when we spend time with dogs, they make us happier, less stressed, and more optimistic. This is the basis of our Pet Assisted Therapy program at Rancho Coastal Humane Society. We take trained Therapy dogs to schools, libraries, assisted living facilities, veterans’ centers, mental health centers, and more. We spend an hour or two meeting and greeting people. By the time we pack up the pups to leave, the people we visited feel better. The word that comes to mind is “peaceful.”
There are so many reasons why people want to spend time with dogs. Whether your dog crawls un-
der the blankets with you at night, plays in the hose while you wash the car, or alerts you to something unusual, dogs improve our lives.
Dogs make our lives more fun. They’re good for us, and we’re good for dogs. We make their lives better, too.
One of the reports I read about National Dog Month summed it up by saying, “Life without dogs is a life missing something special, and that’s worth celebrating.”
A while back I saw a woman really enjoying her stroll with her dog. Her shirt very simply said, “Therapy Dog.”
I asked her, “Can I meet your dog?”
She said, “Yes. Please introduce yourself by letting him sniff your hand.”
He sniffed me, then he sat down and leaned against me.
I asked her which Pet Therapy program they worked with.
She replied, “We’re not with a program. He’s freelance.”
Maybe this is the month for you to find out if your dog could be a therapy dog. Contact Rancho Coastal Humane Society or a shelter near you.
If your dog is freelance, that’s okay, too.
Area 51 from page 5
miles off the coast of San Diego that would be kept top secret by the U.S. government for 13 long years – before it was leaked to The New York Times in December of 2017 (13 years after the incident).
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED BACK THEN THAT MADE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO KEEP IT TOP SECRET?
Along with famed astrophysicist, Neil de Grass Tyson, San Diegans demanded to know: “What the hell really happened back then that made the government decide to keep the whole ordeal top secret? And how safe are we from any potential airborne threat?”
Had the security leak never occurred, the incident would still be top secret and San Diegans – and the world -- would never know what actually happened on that fateful day.
On Sunday 14 November 2004, U.S. Navy pilot, Commander David Fravor, a veteran flier for 18 years, along with another pilot, Lt. Commander Jim Slaight, were airborne during a training exercise off the deck of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Nimitz, when things suddenly changed from their simulated war games.
They were sent to encounter a UFO 90 miles off the coast of San Diego.
An Operations officer onboard the San Diego-based USS Princeton, a deadly Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser that was part of the “carrier strike force” of the U.S.S Nimitz, hailed Fravor on his F/A-18 Super Hornet radio asking: “Are you carrying any weapons?”
Both pilots answered in the negative – they were not carrying any weapons for possible hostile engagement. Fravor’s radio reply was: “Only two CATM-9s.” (The CATM-9s that Fravor referred to are only dummy missiles which cannot be fired since the two pilots were only on a training exercise.)
The question from the guided-missile cruiser was followed by a directive for both pilots to approach the UFO.
The cruiser’s orders were in Navy vernacular: “Well, we’ve got a realworld vector for you,” after which both pilots were instructed to make their approach to a “merge plot” –which is the vicinity of the UFO.
For two weeks, the USS Princeton had been secretly tracking various UFO activities off Catalina Island, 88 miles north of San Diego. The San Diego warship is ferociously armed and battle-tested with formidable naval guns, anti-air, and anti-submarine missiles, along with
surface-to-surface launch capability, and a phalanx of other unknown, classified firepower.
As such, the Princeton was concerned over any possible hostile aircraft activity, including any UFO activity over its home-port of San Diego, which she is diligently trained to protect at all costs.
According to the Princeton’s secret surveillance, the UFOs popped onto their radar scans at 80,000 feet, then one suddenly dive-bombed towards San Diego’s ocean waters, finally stopping and hovering above the water at approximately 20,000 feet.
At all times, the UFO was “lockedon” by the Princeton’s radar. “Lockon” is just one previous step to unleashing any lethal firepower. It is tantamount to cocking a loaded pistol or rifle.
By the time both Navy pilots merged close to one UFO, it was now hovering just 50-feet above the water, as if studying something below the ocean’s surface. With the ocean waters churning beneath the UFO object, Fravor got a clear view: “Getting a great, clear look at it, now. It’s about 40’ long.”
Then Fravor’s voice crackled over the radio transmission with excitement: “Look at that thing! It’s rotating!!”
The UFO propulsion confused both pilots. As Fravor stated, it just didn’t seem possible, at least by any known earthly standards, for such an airborne craft to maneuver and hover the way it did.
Fravor explained:
“It’s not possible with technology today. It has no exhaust, vapor trail, or (discernable) internal propulsion. In less than 2 seconds, it was gone! You’re talking 50 miles of clear visibility and this thing just disappeared in seconds!”
When both pilots returned to the aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz, he replied to his fellow pilots: “I have no idea what I saw. It had no plumes, wings or rotors and outran our F-18s.”
That was back in 2004 and the U.S. Naval Intelligence classified it as: “Tic Tac UFO.”
The highly classified documents and UFO video were, somehow, leaked to The New York Times which broke the story that went global.
U.S. Navy Commander pilot, David Fravor, has been more open on his mysterious UFO encounter off San Diego’s coastline. When Fravor was later asked on network TV how fast he calculated the UFO’s airborne speed to have been, the veteran military flier answered: “Well, way beyond supersonic! Like a bullet out of a gun!”
Under further questions from his TV interview Favor clarified as a trained jet pilot: “No human physiology could’ve survived the ‘G-force’ of that speed.”
Looking back on it, 20 years after the incident, retired Commander David Fravor is now more certain of what he saw that sunny San Diego day:
“Something not from this Earth. The technology that we faced was far superior than anything that we had. I’m not a UFO fanatic, but what we saw with our eyes – well, we have noting close to it. It was incredible technology!”
SUMMATION. UFOs are a global phenomena. Every country on Earth has experienced them.
The British, the French, the Russians, Chinese, all developed world governments have their own UFO research programmes. And most have their versions of America’s Area 51.
Following last year’s historic Congressional hearing surrounding the U.S. government’s knowledge of UAPs, new reports provide insight into how other countries are handling UAP incidents.
The Russian military and their government are not only researching UAPs but also encountering them, according to a letter by investigative journalist George Knapp which was entered into the Congressional record.
“Russia’s program is likely the biggest investigation ever undertaken. Thousands of case files were accumulated. Nearly all of the witnesses who were interviewed were military personnel. Many of the incidents described to me by the program’s director Col. Boris Sokolov were alarming,” Knapp said in his report to the U.S. Congressional hearing.

Historically Speaking from page 7
By the 1850s, the names Brother Jonathan and Uncle Sam were being used nearly interchangeably, to the point that images of what had previously been called “Brother Jonathan” were being called “Uncle Sam.” Similarly, the appearance of both personifications varied wildly. For example, one depiction of “Uncle Sam” in 1860 showed him looking like Benjamin Franklin, while a contemporaneous depiction of Brother Jonathan looks more like the modern version of “Uncle Sam,” though without a goatee.
Uncle Sam did not get a standard appearance, even with the effective abandonment of Brother Jonathan near the end of the American Civil War, until the well-known recruitment image of “Uncle Sam” was first created by Flagg during World War I. It is this image more than any other that has influenced the modern appearance of “Uncle Sam,” an elderly white man with white hair and a goatee, wearing a white top hat with white stars on a blue band, a blue tail coat, and red-and-whitestriped trousers.
Flagg’s depiction of “Uncle Sam” was shown publicly for the first time, according to some, on the cover of the magazine “Leslie’s Weekly” on July 6, 1916, with the caption “What Are You Doing for Preparedness?” More than four million copies of this image were printed between 1917 and 1918. Flagg’s image also was used extensively during World War II, during which America was code named “Samland” by the German intelligence agency Abwehr. The term was central in the song “The Yankee Doodle Boy,” which was featured in 1942, in the musical film “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” starring James Cagney.
There are two memorials to “Uncle Sam,” both of which commemorate the life of Samuel Wilson: the Uncle Sam Memorial Statue in Arlington, Massachusetts, his birthplace; and a memorial near his long-term residence in Riverfront Park of Troy, New York. Wilson’s boyhood home can still be visited in Mason, New Hampshire. Samuel Wilson died on July 31, 1854, aged 87, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Troy, New York.
In 1989, “Uncle Sam Day” became official. A Congressional joint resolution designated Sept. 13, 1989, as “Uncle Sam Day,” the birthday of Samuel Wilson. In 2015, the family history company “My Heritage” researched Uncle Sam’s family tree and claims to have tracked down his living relatives.
So, for history’s sake, we can blame it all on “Uncle Sam” Wilson.

Let’s face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France.
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are animal organs.
We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce and hammers don’t ham?
If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn’t the plural of booth, beeth?
One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices?
Doesn’t it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend?
If you have a bunch of odds and
ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn’t preachers praught?
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
Ever since I can remember I’ve had the burning desire to discover new places, new adventures. Because of this, I set out to discover a new country . . . and I was successful. I even ventured inland a great many miles where I discovered a place I called Minnesota. “This,” I thought, “would be a great place for Scandinavians.” So I headed back to Norway to recruit settlers. While I was gone, some clown named Columbus claimed he discovered America. Life ain’t fair. Except life also give us The Paper. I read it whenever and wherever I go exploring and only buy from those who advertise in The Paper It’s a Viking thing. Your friend Eric the Red
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?
You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by going on.
When the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.
Lastly - Why doesn’t ‘Buick’ rhyme with ‘quick’?
