The Paisley Re-launch

November 2021

You might be wondering what prompted the re-launch of The Paisley Pony Magazine and what the plans are for it. The timing seemed right. Social media has gotten more cluttered and is not as user friendly. Ads are often removed- people end up in FB jail for unknown reasons, etc. The cost of print advertising is extremely high due to production costs being high. The way we see it- digital marketing is the way to go. There are a lot of options to help you make the most of your advertising - such as videos and links directly to your site. As we work through new options and technology- we can help you reach more people for a very low cost! Our goal is to give our advertisers the most bang for the least amount of bucks! One way we are doing this is we have partnered with some companies as affiliates. When you shop with our affiliate partners- you are helping us cover the costs of the magazine and website (at no added cost to you). Sometimes we will even have special coupon codes for you to save you money! So if you are happy we are back, do some shopping within the magazine and on our website! We will work diligently to give you a great experience with each new issue! ~ Cindy

Tips on Trailer Loading Practice Sessions

to connect with love and appreciation. Do your best not to get upset if they begin to tense up or panic. You need to continue to embody the feeling of staying calm, relaxed, and completely confident that getting in the trailer is a safe thing to do! For the trailer:

Do a safety check on the entire trailer, especially the floorboards. You might need to raise up your rubber mats to see how they are looking. If there is any question in your mind, have your trailer inspected by a qualified technician. This way you can relax and know you have the safest trailer possible for your horse. Then, once you’ve explained your case, ask your horse what they need from you to feel completely safe. Notice what images or words or feelings come up. If you aren’t able to receive any information back, just notice how they respond when you begin your practice. They will often tell you with their body language quite quickly how they feel about the whole thing.

When you step in, notice if anything is clanging loudly. Jump up and down a little to be sure. You might need to rearrange some things in your tack room to avoid the loud noises, especially when you do eventually begin to drive off. The least amount of noise for the horse within the trailer, the better! For the horse:

continued from page 24 move them from side to side, forwards, backward, and ask them to shift their hind end or front end as needed. Create that connection in hand first, so your slight shifts with trailer practice will become that much easier. Begin with the end goal of the session in mind: Decide where you would be happy to quit ahead of time. If your horse is particularly nervous about getting remotely close to the trailer, you can decide that having them place their nose on any part of the trailer is a win and call it good for the first session. This is where you really need to know your horse and trust your intuition. Ideally, you are going to create a sense of relaxation for your horse around and in the trailer. You can do any of the following to encourage relaxation (meaning your horse’s head relaxes down, they sigh, yawn, relax a back leg, or look like they are getting sleepy). ● Bladder Meridian Scan (From Masterson Method) ● TTouch or Heart Hug (From Linda Tellington Jones) ● Give them tiny pieces of low/no sugar treats (chewing helps relax them) ● Put some slight pressure on their poll to ask them to relax their head down. Be sure to release quickly (hot potato) when they give you the tiniest notion of their head softening down ● Simply send love and appreciation from your heart to your horse’s heart ● Chat with them and let them know how brave they are ● Place little pieces of grain or snacks that they enjoy on the trailer Once they show signs of relaxation, praise them and offer them more scratches or treats, or whatever encourages them to relax even more. Then just hang out with them, sending them the image of them walking into the trailer easily. Then wait. Breathe. Imagine you are going to be there for three days. Get relaxed in your body and clear with your intention that the trailer is a safe and happy place for your horse. With that relaxed feeling, ask them quietly to move towards the trailer. If they only move their nose and not their feet, praise that anyway. ANY kind of indication that they are trying to investigate the trailer is a win! Be patient and clear. Ask again for them to

www.thepaisleypony.com

move forward. If you feel tension in the lead rope, release that tension. Ask them to softly move their shoulders or hind end to feel like you are offering a sense of movement, but not away from the trailer. Just a feeling of swaying side to side in front of it. If they get in a panic and rush backward, go with them and see if you can turn them in a circle and then immediately get back to searching for that relaxation feeling. Also, when I say praise, it can mean using your voice, placing your hand on them for reassurance and/or offering a treat. Totally up to you and your intuition. Each horse will respond differently. Once you find a good place to end, decide that the next session will only go a tiny bit more. Decide that it is totally fine with you if it takes an entire month of sessions to create a relaxed and safe feeling for your horse to load in the trailer. Once you decide that you aren’t in a rush, magic happens. The sessions will get easier and less stressful and it will probably happen way sooner. So the biggest keys: Don’t rush, listen to what your horse needs, ask for less, praise often, and don’t put any unnecessary pressure on you or your horse! Be safe and enjoy the process! May the horse be with you. Always. -Beth Lauren Parrish P.S. and stalked away. My mind shouted one thing: SCREAM. “You’re new here,” the cat stated. “Yes,” I stammered. “You should stay away from this area,” the cat warned. “I figured,” I replied with some attitude. I thought that if this cat was going to eat me alive that I would go down in sarcasm. “Chester is my name,” said the cat, “and you are?” “Johnny,” I replied. “Well, climb up,” he offered gesturing to his back, “and I will give you a ride back to the farm.” I guessed, and hoped, that I could trust him since he would be playing with me if he wanted to. (And, I don’t mean playing in the nice way.) These were the thoughts echoing in my mind as I decided to take a chance with this cat and swung onboard.

Closer to bedtime, Spencer arrived at the barn. I decided that it was time to talk to this kid. After all, he has seen me plenty and knew that I lived in his tack trunk. So, I pulled him into the corner of an empty stall covered in fresh shavings, picked up a piece of hay and drew a picture of him on the ground. I took my hay stick and started hitting the picture I had drawn. He just stood there with his mouth open and a weird look on his face (like a sheep during the shaving process.) I figured he didn’t understand my message so I had to write it in words for him -WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO ME? I passed him the stick so he could respond. He just stared at me and then said “you know English?” (Gosh, these humans, surprised that the animals around them speak their own language.) I nodded my head at him. He told me he was sorry that he had moved us, but he felt sure that we’d be happy at the new farm. He was missing his pony a lot too, but hoped we would all stay in touch somehow. I sniffed and glared, but decided to forgive him. After all, he’s my oldest friend and he’s always let me stay with him. And, now that he knew that I could understand him and talk to him we might become really good friends! The future is looking bright!

Chester ran through the corn field, under a fence and through an outdoor riding ring. I thought two …to be continued things during the ride … number one: OOOWWWW. It feels a lot different riding a cat than a pony. The cat is low to the ground and I kept getting hit with grass and dirt and, number two: my friends are never going to believe that I rode a cat! Chester dropped me off near the barn. I thanked him and he said he’d see me around. After resting for a bit, I decided to explore again. I soon ran into Sam and Rebecca. I told them about my adventure with the fox and Chester and they laughed and told me it had happened to them also. Apparently, Chester is extremely nice and kind of the boss of all the animals. They took me to meet some of the ponies. They all seemed quite nice, but I couldn’t stop thinking about how new this was and missing my old home and my old friends. And, I wondered where Spencer was.

Pony Tails... with Daisy

Right now it’s super exciting around here. We are all talking about the re-launch of The Paisley Pony Magazine! Ok…so you might say- why would I… Daisy… be excited? I’m 3 ½ ish- I’m not very worldlyI’m a bit self-centered… what do I have to be excited about? Let me tell you. What I lack in worldly-ness … my friends do not. Dodger is like a pony Buddha/yoda…Dylan is kind of like Yogi Berra (simple but profound in a kind of Forest Gump-ish way) …Leo has seen and been through things that most would not want tohe’s had serious life altering stuff in his life… and then there’s me. When it was mentioned that I was going to have a column- Buddy’s Tails came up. Now I’m not sure how many of you know Buddybut I do know he was something special! He had quite a story and he overcame a lot to go the places he did! Dodger took it upon himself to do a bit of research and read Buddy’s columns. Buddy was majorly diverse, deep and kind of all over the place! He talked about everything from the robins arriving in the spring to baseball- and he always had a reason as to why. I’m going to try and learn from him!

My goal is to learn…see the world in other ways…not just in ways that matter to me. Because truth be told- if it doesn’t involve food or dressing up- the old me wasn’t interested! That’s changing! I’m putting a new hoof forward. I’m going to try and expand my world…try and see things outside of just what affects me. Dodger, Leo and Dylan are willing to help me…and I know we will make a formidable team! Who knows what we can discuss or where we can go! I might even ask for a contract with a jet clause in it … don’t laugh…I see myself running on a beautiful sandy beach… super kind humans stationed around holding organic carrots with greens on top… grooming stations where I get all my itches taken care of… ok…maybe not so glorious… but a lot of things can be discussed and it’s time for me to grow up a bit and do my part.

Ryder Owen

I have been up to quite a lot in the past few years. I was a 2018 Gochman Grant recipient and that experience changed my life. I have travelled around as a working student and have shown a little. I have even been to WEF and had the opportunity to show some incredible horses. I recently competed my large jumper pony, Becks, at Pony Jumper Finals. We were awarded the Pony Jumper Style Award, Bronze team, and fourth overall. A year ago I started my own non-profit called, Joy Ryder, and have already started helping people start achieving their horsey dreams. Last winter I sponsored five riders to do their very first horse show and this year I am expanding and paying for several kids to join Pony Club -as well as help pay for lessons. I really enjoy trying to help diversify our community and help kids that may not have the support, get started. I have also recently started to get into the governance side of different equestrian organizations. I am a USHJA Youth Committee member, an Equus Foundation ambassador, a volunteer at two different horse rescues, and on a DEI equestrian Task Force. I love getting involved and I love the equestrian community. My goals for 2022 is to compete my new horse, Chosen, in the low junior jumpers. I would also really love to continue to expand my non-profit to make riding more accessible for kids that are interested. I would also like to focus a little bit more on equitation and keep learning as much as I can.

Paisley Ambassadors Then & Now ~What did you like most about being a Paisley Pony Ambassador?

Spencer Dyson

I appreciated my first opportunity to be a published author, to be part of a like-minded community, and the opportunity to meet and interview amazing individuals. ~What have you been up to for the last couple of years- these can be accomplishments of any kind- horse related or not. I’ve decided to focus on jumpers with my forever horse, Quintessa. I kept up my writing and had other articles published, as well as winning in the Scholastic Arts and Writing contest. I’ve recently started volunteering at a Therapeutic riding center. ~ What are your goals for 2022? My goals for 2022 are to improve my writing and riding, as well as focusing on my grades. ~ Tell us something about you that most people don’t know. I like to build complex Lego sets. ~ Spencer Dyson

Animal Communication, What is it? Animal Communication is a telepathic, energetic connection. It is the transference of images, videos, sounds, smells, feelings and knowings. It is a primary way that animal species “talk” amongst themselves as well as with other species. Every person is born with this ability. Many use their ability daily and don’t realize it. Others put it aside once they learn verbal and written skills. Telepathic communication happens fast. Usually before you are finished thinking of a question you have an answer. Most don’t trust what they receive because of the quickness in which the answer arrives. For me, and many animal communicators, it is a gift that we continue to practice and develop. It is, my souls purpose. My mission is to have ALL animals be heard, to have a voice. My goal is to bridge the gap by speaking with as many animals as I can, while mentoring owners to better hear their animal, which also creates a happier, healthier bond. Animal communicators are essentially translators. Sometimes we translate words directly as they are sent to us, other times we have to translate into words the image, video, sound, smell, feeling or knowing that is sent by the animal.

Through animal communication we can check on an animal’s health, mental and emotional state, general well-being, better learn their preferences and their past history, assist when bringing a new family member into the home (animal or human), moving homes, see things from their perspective, behavior issues and so much more. If you have a question or concern it can be addressed. Animals often have messages for their owners. They see us from a different place than we see ourselves and they know us as well as or even better than we know ourselves. Some are here to assist you in your work, life or as a companion. Rest assured they are in your life for a reason. Perspective is often overlooked. During a session an animal can show us why they have or do a certain behavior. Whether or not it is favorable to the owner. Seeing it from their point of view usually helps us to understand the behavior. We can also show them our perspective on a behavior and why it may or may not be favorable to us. Just being heard can begin to help improve a behavior.

Even though an animal can let us know where and how they feel discomfort, point us in the right Animals tend to be literal. So be careful what you say direction on a lameness, injury or illness, let us know and promise. You can’t hide something from them. if a medicine, supplement or food is making them Remember, communication is telepathic. So when feel good or bothering them, animal communication you make that vet appointment, or plan that trip, is NOT a substitute for veterinary care. your animal already knows. Being honest with them is their preference. Even if it may disappoint them, It takes a team to keep your animals feeling their such as why they can’t accompany you on a trip, best. Find the right veterinarian for your team, they want to know the truth. develop a good relationship, be a good client (this is a whole other article) and you and your animal will be well covered!

I am Jennifer Nicolella, animal communicator, reiki master and mentor. I reside in Aiken SC with my animal family—horses, cow, goats, dogs and cat. All of whom assist in my animal communication work. All are teachers in my classes and most help with readings. For as long as I can remember I have communicated with animals. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized it had a “name” and if I nurtured this gift, it would become my life, and I would be fulfilling my soul’s purpose. My youngest memory of communicating with an animal was when I was 7 years old. My family was staying on a ranch in CA for the summer. It was my 1st time around horses. The ranch hand walked me over to 7 weanlings, threw a rope over ones neck and said turn all of them out over there, he pointed to a pasture. I took the rope, looked into her eyes and heard “I’ll show you”. It was a moment I will never forget. It was as if I received a “download” just like a computer. Suddenly it was as if I was raised on a ranch, doing things I shouldn’t have been able to do. I certainly had no previous experience or knowledge, not to mention my age! I was able to put a halter on without being shown, groom and bath horses without instruction and even rode as if I had experience. It was Patches, the paint weanling filly that said, “I’ll show you”, who communicated with me and told me how to do those things. My 30 plus years as trainer, riding instructor, breeder and veterinary technician also play a part in my animal communication work. As does my education in animal science and my continuing education work as an equine and canine massage therapist, Reiki master, and Mentor. My formal education assists my animal communication work greatly. It allows me to properly pass on, translate, and understand information being sent to and from an animal byunderstanding correct terminology, anatomy and physiology, names of diseases, medications, equipment usage and understanding the process of how many procedures and treatments are performed. It allows me to be more detailed with an animal and their owner. As well as allowing for a deeper and faster connection. The animal communication sessions are done over the phone and owners do not need to be with the animal at the time of the session. We can speak with animals that are still with us or those that have passed. We can check on an animals general well being, health, mental and emotional state, address behavioral issues and see things from their perspective as well and show them their humans perspective on a situation or issue. There is no limit as to what can be discussed. Animal communication does NOT replace veterinary care nor provide a diagnosis or prescribe. Jennifer Nicolella jennifernicolella27@gmail.com

Chantilly ...a pony LEGEND!

Sindy Paul & Chantilly

The History of Ponies: Chantilly

Farm in Warrenton, Virginia. She was ridden by Karen Quinn. Eddie called Mrs. Beckman Chantilly went from a humble beginning to every weekend saying “That damn pony was being the first pony inducted into the National Champion again!” as she was in 26 out of 28 Show Hunter Hall of fame. She was bred by shows and reserve champion at the other 2 Roberts Coles in Keswick, VA – by Brigadier shows in a single year. II out of Briquette. Chantilly’s next stop was with Sindy Paul Mrs. Carl W. Beckman found her in a field trained by Mr. Milton Junie Kulp at All Around never having been handled. Chantilly arrived Farm. She arrived at dusk on a Friday eveat her farm in a cattle truck with a piece of ning. The van opened and down the ramp bailing twine around her neck instead of a came the most magnificent 12.3 hand seal halter. It took a lot of handling with a lot of brown pony with four white socks and a easy going and care to finally able to gain white blaze that I had ever seen. Being at her trust and put a bridle and saddle on her. All Around Farm, I was accustomed to great Her daughter Laura Beckman Rhodes was horses and ponies (Showdown was in the the first to show her to many championships stall next to hers overlooking the courtyard at winning almost every class that she entered the main barn at All Around Farm). She had in the green pony division. In those days, such charisma and such presence about her all green ponies competed together. Laura that all you could do was feel awed by her. outgrew her and Mr. Eddie Bywaters bought I briefly rode her as it was getting dark, but her for Mrs. Elizabeth McIntosh of Waverly I immediately knew that she was the most

Sindy Paul & Chantilly at The Devon Horse Show

The next time that I saw her was that weekend at our first show, judged by Hope Montgomery Scott, a well-known equestrian and judge. We won our first class together and were champion – the first of numerous classes and championships won from that first show through our last show at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. One year we were champion at 20 out of 21 shows. With every class, grand championship and championship won she would always give me a hug as if to say congratulations, we did this together, you are my child and I will take care of you. Chantilly was a super star throughout her career for everyone who rode her (in order Laura Beckman Rodes, Karen Ellis, Sindy Paul and Patricia Gowl) and trained her (in order Mrs. Carl W. Beckman, William J. Quinn, Junie Kulp and Marcy Martin). She was a great, consistent champion regardless of the weather (sun or rain, hot or cold), day or night, outdoors or indoors, in a ring or over an outside course, in the model class, under saddle class or over fences. She was champion, and if it was offered, grand champion at every major show – a partial listing includes Devon Horse Show, Pennsylvania National Horse Show, Washington International Horse Show, the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden, Upperville, Deep Run, Staunton, Glenmore Hunt, Warrenton Pony Show, Fairfield County Hunt Club, Ox Ridge Hunt Club, Piping Rock,

C.W. Post, Orange County, Sussex County (Branchville), Quentin Riding Club, Virginia State Horse Show, Ludwigs Corner, Sugartown, Lancaster, Delaware County, St. Christopher’s Hospital Horse Show for Children, Middlesex County, and Monmouth County. Competing from 1964-1973 she was in the top 5 of the AHSA HOTY at least 7 times, she was the Gregory Beowulf Saunders National Champion, Grand Champion Hunter of the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA) both times that it was awarded when I showed her, PHBA Small Pony Hunter Champion 3 consecutive years and VHSA Small Pony Hunter Campion. Chantilly was extremely bright and kind. She always did her best in every class at every show. She consistently won the model class, under saddle class and over fences (the Chantilly Perpetual Trophy is given for the winner of the medium pony hunter class at the Devon Horse Show). She knew she was great, but never acted like a diva. She knew as we stood at the in gate with Junie Kulp giving us our final instructions that it was about to be her chance to demonstrate her greatness doing what she liked to do best - showing. Like Laura, I knew as soon as we entered the ring what the trip would be like. And of course, she looked forward to the carrots, apples, and love that she received every day that I spent with her. Our lives are so intertwined with those of our ponies that it is difficult to determine who influences whom. This is true of Chantilly as she, along with so many of those around her, are in the National Show Hunter hall of Fame. Her trainers Mrs. Carl W. Beckman (Eileen Beckman) and Mr. Junie Kulp (who was inducted the same year as Chantilly), one of her owners Mrs. Elizabeth McIntosh of Waverly Farms and Mr. Eddie Bywaters. She was truly the pony of a lifetime for everyone who was lucky enough to ride, train or work with her.
