Turning a setback into a comeback Mathew Breman watches the ball enter the goal in Saturday afternoon’s game against Jefferson Academy. Breman finished the shot from Jason Monterroso to score the go-ahead goal in the game, which was the second round of the state playoffs. The Pirates ultimately defeated Jefferson Academy 4-2 in the come-from-behind win. Tomorrow, the Pirates will face off against the Vail Mountain Gore Rangers in Vail at 1 p.m. in the state quarterfinals.

Wildcats by a score of 4-0 Friday afternoon to advance to the second round. The Wildcats entered the playoffs as the No. 21 seed. “So, the second game, once again, we came out really, really amped up,” Kurt-Mason said. However, the team, again, didn’t play a good possession game in the first half, the coach explained, allowing the Jaguars to score “two solid goals.” The first of Jefferson Academy’s goals came in the first minutes of the game, while the second was scored with just over 26 minutes left in the first half. “We were just screwing up,” Kurt-Mason said, adding that he told the team at halftime there was a simple fix and offered up a motivational statement: “We’ll turn this little setback into a comeback.” And that’s exactly what the Pirates did. He also told them they have the hearts of champions and reminded them they had overcome greater deficits than the one they were currently facing. The simple fix, the coach explained, was to drop the ball back as soon as the Pirates gained possession, buying the team time to

Berndt again found himself taking on the goalie one-on-one with a penalty kick. The goal was Berndt’s 40th of the season, which leaves him tied for the lead in the state. Shortly before the final whistle sounded, Kurt-Mason said he turned around and for the first time noticed the strong crowd supporting the Pirates. “There were a lot of people there,” he said. The Pirates notched 14 shots in the game, including five by Ross, four by Berndt, two by Mathew Breman and one each from Lindner, Irons and Thompson. The Jaguars had 16 shots in the game.

transition out of a defensive posture and spread out more. “That dividend paid off right away,” he said. Less than four minutes into the second half, the Pirates scored their first goal of the day when Maverick Miller fed the ball to Berndt. The second goal came minutes later, when Berndt found the back of the net on a penalty kick to tie the game. The third goal of the day for the Pirates came only minutes later, with Monterroso feeding the ball to Mathew Breman, who found his way past the goalie in a crowded box. Not content with only a one-goal lead, the Pirates added another goal in the game’s final minutes when

For the first time in Pagosa Springs High School history, the Pirate soccer team is advancing to the quarterfinals of the state playoffs, and is taking with it a perfect 17-0 record. To garner their spot among the top eight teams in Colorado 3A soccer, the Pirates logged two wins in the last week, including a 4-2 comefrom-behind win in the second round of state playoffs on Saturday. “That was a moment in Pagosa soccer history that was amazing,” coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason said of Saturday’s win over No. 12 Jefferson Academy. “That redeems your belief ... it was like a movie.” Now, the Pirates, who entered the playoffs as the No. 5 seed, will take on the Vail Mountain Gore Rangers, who entered as the No. 4 seed. That game is scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 6) in Vail. It will be broadcast live on KWUF 1400 AM. The team is set to leave Thursday and make a stop along the way to practice on a turf field since turf makes for a faster tempo of play and requires some changes in technique. “The guys are jazzed,” KurtMason said, adding that they continue to be focused and work hard in practice. “I just know these guys are going to give everything they have at every moment and it’s a very amazing thing.” En route to advancing further than any PSHS boys’ soccer team has before, the Pirates hosted the first and second rounds of playoffs Friday and Saturday, defeating No. 28 Dawson School and No. 12 Jefferson Academy, respectively. “Both of the games, we started the same way,” Kurt-Mason said, explaining that in the Pirates’ focus and desire to win, they would push the ball forward before fully transitioning into a defensive stance, leaving them without a numbers advantage in their attack. “We never really waited and had patience to keep possession for a while.” But, in both games, the Pirates hit their stride in the second half. In the game against the Dawson School Mustangs, that stride translated into a number on the scoreboard with just over 31 minutes left in the game, when Mathew Breman chipped the ball to James Berndt, who bicycle kicked the ball into the back of the net. About 10 minutes later, the Pirates added to their tally when Breman passed the ball to Jason Monterroso, who one-touched it into the goal. In the game’s final minutes, Breman claimed a goal of his own off an assist from Berndt, giving the Pirates the 3-0 lead that would let them advance to the second round. “We had about 24 shots to their six,” Kurt-Mason said. Berndt logged 10 of the Pirates’ 24 shots. Two each came from Breman, Pitcher Lindner, Monterroso, Blake Irons, Gavin Ross and Keaton Anderson. Josue Castaneda, Hunter Thompson and Brandon Breman each added one shot to the team’s total. Pirate keeper Briar Erskine logged six saves in the game, compared to the 10 tallied by the Mustangs’ Nicholas Timms. The next day, the Pirates took on the Jefferson Academy Jaguars, who defeated The Academy
