Closing the Gap: Understanding The ODA Fund and Its Impact
Every year, the Out-of-Door Board of Trustees works diligently to minimize tuition increases. Despite these efforts, the cost of providing a unique and worldclass education continues to rise. We are committed to offering our educators competitive salaries, providing necessary raises, and maintaining financial assistance to ensure an Out-of-Door education remains accessible and inclusive.
As an independent 501(c)(3) school, Out-of-Door relies on the generosity of our community to support our annual operational costs. But why don’t tuition payments alone cover the full expense of providing an exceptional education?
The answer lies in the financial model that has sustained leading independent schools, colleges, and universities for centuries. This is where the annual fund plays a critical role. It helps bridge “The Gap” between tuition and the actual cost of a quality education, fully funding our operating budget. In the 2023-24 school year, “the Gap” per student at Out-of-Door was more than $3,093 per student. Through philanthropic support, you helped us close this gap.
The annual fund, known as The ODA Fund, supports essential expenses such as:
• Employee salaries and professional development
• Curriculum enhancements and educational resources
• Financial assistance
• Campus maintenance and upgrades
• Extracurricular (arts & athletic) programs and activities
• Unanticipated expenses such as State Championship expenses or a campus speaker.
Last year, Out-of-Door engaged in three main events to support unrestricted giving to The ODA Fund: (1) A 48 Hours of Giving Campaign - Ready, Set, Give!; (2) Banyan Ball Extravaganza; and (3) The Giving Challenge. These three programs, in addition to unrestricted gifts made throughout the year, led to over $1,177,000 raised.

48 Hours of Giving: Ready, Set, Give!
In November, the Out-of-Door community came together in an unprecedented display of support for our students and educators. Our Ready, Set, Give! campaign, a 48-hour giving challenge, was one of the most successful in our school’s history, thanks to the incredible generosity of our families and the transformative support of an anonymous donor.
Inspired by a $250,000 matching gift challenge, our community rose to the occasion. Not only did we meet the match dollar for dollar, but we shattered our goal, raising over $570,000 for The ODA Fund!

Last year, the Out-of-Door community came together in spectacular fashion for the Banyan Ball Extravaganza.
As our largest event-based fundraiser of the year, this special evening supports The ODA Fund and makes a direct impact on the student experience.
Held at the elegant Ritz-Carlton, Banyan Ball Extravaganza kicked off Out-of-Door’s Centennial Celebration.
Families, friends, alumni, educators, and supporters of our Out-of-Door gathered for an unforgettable night of celebrating our beloved school and our storied history.

The Giving Challenge: Sarasota’s Biennial Fundraising Event
Out-of-Door participated in the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s Biennial Giving Challenge, with giving enhanced by The Patterson Foundation. This special event helped raise an incredible $94,000, thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters. As one of 724 not-for-profit organizations participating, Out-of-Door’s community truly shined.

Parent Auxiliary Programs
Since Out-of-Door’s founding in 1924, parent volunteers have played a key role in the life of the school. Through the Arts Alliance, Parent Association, and the Thunder Athletic Club, parent volunteers support the mission of the school and build community through a variety of events, activities, and initiatives.
During the 2023-2024 school year, the Arts Alliance, PA, and TAC organized and supported a number of events, including parent luncheons, golf tournaments, Thunder Fun Day, the Festival of the Arts fashion show, and educator appreciation events.
