First Communion

M

y first major memory in St Mary’s was my First Holy Communion.

All three classes watched a film in the school until we were called down to the church. The service lasted about an hour and a half, it was a great experience.

When the Mass ended we went back to the school for some refreshments and a game of football!

D

uring 2017 Ms. Quirke, Mr. Rooney and Mr. Murphy’s second class were busy preparing for our first Holy Communion. Everyone had a different job and learnt readings and hymns. In April we had our Holy Confession, and a few weeks later we had a rehearsal for our Communion.

May 13th was the big day. I was delighted when it finally arrived. We had been asked to meet in the school, I arrived early only too happy to be there. The teachers organised us into neat lines on the field. There was huge excitement. We walked to the church in our pristine new uniforms proudly displaying our communion medals and looking forward to the great day ahead.

Everyone sat down beside their family members while the priest began the introduction. There were readings and songs and when the time came, we lined up to receive the holy bread.

After Mass we went back to the school, there were treats in the hall... they were great! It didn’t take long for a huge football game to begin out the back. It was great fun and we went home to have a party with the family and got presents and cake. It was a wonderful day and one of my fondest memories.

SPORTS DAYS

M

y favourite memory was doing sports day because we did not have to do work or homework.

I remember 4th class, 5th class and 6th class would set up stalls where you would be able to play games and win packets of jellies. Doing the races were fun also. You would be part of a team and get to wear your team colours. I remember winning a few races. So that is why it is one of my favourite memories from St Mary’s.

E

very year in St Mary’s we have a sports day where everyone competes in events including 100 metre sprint, relay race, egg and spoon, tyre race, sack race and a few more fun races that are always very enjoyable. On the morning of sports day an ice cream van comes into the infant yard and all students get a ticket for a free ice cream cone. After you get an ice cream you would go to the 5th and 6th class yard where 4th 5th and 6th classes would have the option to set up stands where younger students could spend 1 or 2 euro to try get a prize. After you compete in your events you can try loads of different fun things including scoring a soccer penalty scoring a Gaelic football point high jump and in the last one you could try to score a rugby conversion. In the afternoon you could go get some popcorn, candy floss and a drink while you watch the 6th classes play a game of tug of war and that’s why sports day is one of the best days of the year. My favourite sports day memory is probably waking up in the morning because you know you have such a great day ahead.

Santry and Cross-Country

I

qualified to compete in the Santry athletics competition which was great fun. There were loads of different events to participate in. My favourite was the high jump, but I also love the long jump, hurdles and shot put. Lots of school teams from all over Dublin attended. There was also a tuck shop which had pancakes and sweets.

T

wo years ago, St Mary’s and loads of other schools around Dublin did cross country races in Terenure College. It was a dry and cloudy day, which was good for running. The 4th class boys ran 1 kilometre and the 5th and 6th ran 1.5 kilometres. A lot of the 4th class boys came in the top 15 of the races. The other classes in St Mary’s raced well and St Mary’s won the overall trophy. It was a great day for them with lots of celebrations.

M

y best memory of St. Mary’s was in 3rd class. I got to go to Terenure cross country for the first time, after getting through on the trials. I was so excited to get through. When we went on the bus it was such a great buzz.

Then we got off the bus and saw all the other schools. We then warmed up and got ready for our race, which was 500 metres.

We started the race and I had a bad start because I didn’t know when they would blow the horn, it was so long. In the race I didn’t have a clue where I came but I think I did well. After our race I remember seeing all the other long races and everyone did really well and we won overall. It was great that we won overall, everyone was cheering and we won the next 2 years which I also took part in. We then went to get our award and celebrated all the way back and in school. It was such a great time and I was glad to take part in it every year and the school won every year.

E

very year boys from 3rd to 6th class (led by Mr Duffy) compete in athletic events at Santry. The events include: relay races, sprints, hurdles, high jump etc.

The races begin after a quick warmup. The boys cheer on their schoolmates from the stand while awaiting their turn.

After your race there is always plenty of tuck shops and stalls to get food and treats from. Santry is a great event enjoyed by all who participate.

I

remember back in 4th class we took part in Terenure Cross Country. We got on the bus around half ten after looking at everyone’s science experiment. We left early for the bus ride.

Since we were in 4th class we had our race around the start and after that we wandered around. We found the commentator stall and told them such a good joke “knock, knock”, “who’s there?”, “doctor”, “doctor who?”, what comedians we were! They ended up telling us jokes and giving us the penguin bars that they got the jokes from.

What a comedic time!

I

n Fifth class we went to Terenure college to run a 1km race against a few other schools around a few rugby and GAA pitches for cross country. It was a wet and damp day so the conditions weren’t very good for it but we still had fun. We left the school before small break, so when we got there we put on our shorts and started doing a few stretches and then we were told to have some fruit before it was our turn to race. When it was our turn to go, I was very nervous that I wasn’t going to do well since I was in the third row and I wasn’t very fast but when the whistle blew to go, I had a really good start which allowed me stay ahead of everyone else behind me for the whole race. After running about 100 meters I started to run in a steady jog and was about fifteenth place at this time. About three quarters of the way through I started to try and get further ahead until I was about 100 meters away from the finish, I put in my all and ran as fast as I could and ended up coming top ten.

I

remember when we went to Rathfarnham Castle park for a scavenger hunt. We were in teams of four, I was in a team with Aran, Liam and Oisín Sheehan, everyone was given maps that shows numbers in different locations all around the park. Every team was given a certain number to start with and each team would go all around the park, without teams following each other. Once we reached a number we would see a letter and write that letter on a sheet that we got from the teachers. In the end we won and got a prize.

GAA in St. Mary’s T

he St. Mary’s gaelic football tournament was one of my favourite memory’s. At the time I was in 4th class and really only getting back into gaa but my team was really good and helped me get better. There was 8 teams and the 6th classers were the referees and helped fill in for people who were out. The teams were very fair and each game was tight. On the last match the final was played and it was very tight. When the game finished we were allowed do what we want and we got ice pops. That was one of my favourite things as we got time off school to play Gaelic and it lasted for weeks. There was many other tournaments that I also enjoyed.

T

he Gaelic Football after-school tournament happened while we were in 4th class. I was on the Cork team and had great fun playing in all weathers from rainy to hot.

It was great fun for a lot of people and was also a bit of a trial for the Senior A and B teams but that wasn’t revealed until after.

Every team played really well but in a final between Dublin and Antrim, Antrim came out on top to claim the league. The match followed a national anthem and lap of honour by both teams.

Everybody was there to watch and it was great fun. The teams that played were Limerick, Antrim, Tipperary, Dublin, Cork and Kilkenny. It was an amazing memory of St Mary’s.

Croke Park

O

ne day, in 2016, St. Mary’s were playing in a hurling final in Croke Park. I was in 1st Class. I was in the stand and, coincidently, my brother, Zack, was right behind me. St. Mary’s were 2 points down in the final few minutes when we got a free kick in our own half. Everyone was in the box. The sliotar was launched into the box, and someone hit the sliotar into the back of the net. We saw the green flag being waved by the umpire. We all went mad! We went on to win the game.

The Road to Croker T

he journey started off when St. Mary’s won against St. Pius. This proved to be the toughest game St. Mary’s faced in the whole competition. We won by 6 points, but it could have easily been the other way around. We were neck and neck for the whole game, and a key player for us, Josh Mooney, got concussed at half-time. We started off the group of 4 well and carried momentum through to the rest of our games.

We won the last two games of the group and were drawn against St. Mary’s Lucan in the quarter-final. We won the game by 19 points, it was a super win because before we knew it we were one match away from Croke Park. We clashed with St. Colmcilles in the semi-final and came out winners. We had big celebrations and many training sessions to follow. Knowing that we were playing in Croke Park, our coaches prepared us with a silent session where we couldn’t talk. This prepared us for not being able to hear each other with the loud crowd noises.

Now the talk was over, we had to prove ourselves on the pitch. My relatives made the journey from Mayo the night before. I went to bed at eight o’clock but didn’t get to sleep until half nine. The nerves had me thinking about everything that could go wrong on the day. By now, it was the next morning and we had a massive send off from the whole school. The two coaches, Mr O’Neill and Mr Duffy, said a little bit about each player and what their strong points were. We listened to some drumming from a boy in fourth class, he was brilliant. The nerves had got to everyone and nobody had the courage to even speak to one another.

Then we walked onto the bus. Now it was all serious and all about the match. We watched the end of the game before and had a bite to eat. Then we went into the changing rooms. We got kitted out, and said a Hail Mary before going out onto the pitch.

We won by a massive score line of 8-13 to 00-08. I was happy with my performance, although I did not score, I thought I helped the team in different ways. I got on a lot of ball and created some chances. The bus journey home was absolutely class. We just roared out songs and everybody was on cloud nine. We arrived to a massive party put together by the Parents Association. There was a super buzz around the place. A hundred percent, the best day of my life in St. Mary’s.

The Chance To Win M y favourite memory in St Mary’s was being on the Senior A’s and making it all the way to Croke Park and winning the Corn Kitterick Trophy. Our first match was against St Pius BNS, winning this match led us on our way to one of the best and most memorable days of my life. Winning the semi-final against St Colmcilles in Sancta Maria is a feeling that I will never forget. When the ref blew the final whistle, it was an amazing feeling knowing we would be playing in Croke Park and having the chance to win the Corn Kitterick Trophy. The week leading up to the final was amazing, we had a lot of training sessions and we played a game of silent football preparing for not being able to hear each other in Croke Park.

On the day of the final (22nd of October, 2019) we came into school and left our bags in Mr O’Neills classroom and then we went onto the field for a kickabout.

After the kick about we got into our jerseys for the Tional in front of the school. We went onto the stage and sat down. One by one Mr Duffy and Mr O’ Neill went through every boy saying a few words about everyone. Then the whole school sang The St Mary’s up to Jones Road song. Just before we were leaving to get onto the bus the choir sang something inside so strong. When we were going through the yard to get to the bus, the junior and senior infants gave us a guard of honour. When we arrived at Croke Park we put our tracksuits on because it was cold in the stadium. We sat in the stands watching the other games and eating our lunches. After a while we went down to the dressing rooms and put our jerseys on.

We then did a warm up in the ball wall section beside the dressing rooms. Before we headed onto the pitch Mr O’ Neil and Mr Duffy gave us our team talk. When we ran onto the pitch the whole school cheered. Then we did a kicking drill to get our touch in for the game. After a few minutes we took a team photo and then the match began. I can not remember every detail of the match but I can say that it was the best game I ever played and the best game the team ever played. The final score was 8-13 to 0-08. Winning the Corn Kitterick in Croke Park is an achievement that I will never forget for the rest of my life.

O

ne of my favourite moments in St Mary’s was Croke Park when St Mary’s won the Corn Kitterick in 2019. It was an amazing game of football and it was great to watch a game in Croke Park. On the bus to the stadium everyone was screaming. Everyone was excited to go to Croke Park. I bought loads of treats and was excited for kick off. It was a good game but in the end St Mary’s won comfortably and everyone from St Mary’s were so thrilled and happy for the team. They collected their trophy and their medals after the celebrations. The team I was on, the Senior Bs received our medals because we also won our league. On the bus back to St Mary’s we were all talking about the game and how well everybody played. There was a party back in St Mary’s and that was loads of fun. After the party most people went out to the field and played a gaelic match.

A

fter lots of hard work we eventually got to the gaelic final in Croke Park and we were all very nervous but excited too. We couldn’t wait to walk out onto the pitch like many greats before us. It all started off with a brilliant send off from the teachers, students and friends.

There were drums and intense music. We then got a coach to the stadium and we all had butterflies and it was clearly showing. Once we got to the stadium we headed straight to the stand to fuel up on some pasta and protein bars and things like that. After we finished up our food we started for the dressing room and we got ready and said a special prayer that we were all given in our bootbags. We headed to the warm up area that was dedicated for the team in the dressing room. We did an intense passing drill to get us on our toes and then headed out to the pitch. When we got out we did a shooting drill where we made semi circle around the goal and shot. We then took our positions and the rest was history!

In case you haven’t realised by now but we WON!!!! It was a great experience that I think everyone on the senior A panel will treasure forever.

School Tour memories

M

y best memory in St Mary’s is when we went to Aqua Zone for our 4th class school tour. This was my favourite memory because there were lots of water slides and a wave pool. There was also a river that you could swim along with a Jacuzzi. Afterward we went bowling at a Leisureplex nearby, we also played some arcade games and then left we were a bit late.

O memory I will always have from St Mary’s is going to the Newgrange farm in senior infants. I don’t really remember much as this trip was a long time ago. But my favourite part of that trip was either petting the ducks, rabbits, and all the other farm animals there. I think we then moved on to the little bus ride which was a lot of fun too. I will miss this school a lot. All the teachers were so helpful and I truly enjoyed the lessons here in St Mary’s.

ur second class school tour was different for me because we shared it with fourth class which just so happened to be the year my brother was in, so I got to share it with him which was great. The tour was in Meath, it was the crystal maze. Some of the challenges involved walking on a tight rope, and then if you succeeded you would get a small little jewel and if you got enough the school would take home this trophy. At lunch time everyone started doing bottle flips with fizzy drinks and then opened them and the bottles went boom. We went on a river walk and sometimes the river went up to waist height. Finally we went home in high spirits because we got a plastic medal.

y favourite memory of St. Mary’s is when we had the school tour in 4th class. We brought in our swim gear, then we went into school and did no work. When the bus arrived we went to the aqua park. We stayed there for about an hour, it was great fun! Then we went to Leisure Plex. It was a great day!

I

In 4th class me and my class went Aquazone. We first went on the bus which took about an hour to get there. When we got there, there was also a couple of other schools waiting outside Aquazone. Then we got in, we all got changed into our swimming togs and then we went into the waterpark. It was very big and there were a lot of massive slides and there were also waves. There were a lot of fun waterslides. It was a very fun time.

n 4th class we went to the National Aquatic centre and Leisure Plex for our school tour. In the morning we got on a bus and went to the centre. On the way it was class because we were all excited. When we got there we wasted no time and got into our swimming shorts. We went straight up to the slides and did all of them. After we went to the wave pool and then we raced around the lazy river. After that we had to go but then we went to Leisure plex. We had fun there on the games.

After we went back to the school and went home it was a great day.

n 4th class we went to a bowling/ arcade place. On the bus we were so excited to go, we also went to aquazone before it. It was so fun and we did bowling. It was fun too and we also played games. My favourite part was when we tried to play DDR (dance dance revolution) and failed. I also forgot my jumper in the arcade.

ur 3rd class school tour was to Fort Lucan. Fort Lucan is a water park. It’s a far bus ride but my favourite part on the bus was when everyone would just be chanting over and over again. We would always get given out to.

Fort Lucan had a shop, and you could get chips so I did. I would get sweets from my parents. The best slide was the green one because it had the shortest queue and was the best in my opinion. There was a helter-skelter which would give you a really bad burn. Nonetheless it was one the better school tours we had.

W

e went to Zipit for our first 6th Class tour. Mr. Rooney and Ms. Walsh were the only teachers to actually do the courses and Mr. Corish was too scared! Mr. Rooney even did the Blue course and jumped off at the end while we cheered him on. Only a few students did the Blue course – I wasn’t one of them because I’m afraid of heights and didn’t want to risk it. After Zipit, we hiked up the mountain. We nearly lost some boys because they decided to go in the opposite direction but luckily they reappeared 20 minutes later! All in all, Zipit was an amazing day out and probably one of the best tours we’ve ever had. Thanks to the teachers for making it so much fun and joining in!

School Tours

W

e went on our 6th class school tour to Zipit. We got on our bus at the school and drove all the way over to Zipit. The trees towered over us as we drove in. We went for a short hike while waiting for our turn on the course. When it was our time, we got our harnesses and we got a quick briefing and then were let off on our own. It was lots of fun up in the trees zip-lining and climbing.

After a while we stopped and had lunch. It was lots of fun out in the woods eating as we chatted. When it was time to go home, we started walking to where the bus was going to pick us up but it wasn’t there. We waited in the boiling heat until finally a different bus came. We learned later that our original bus had broken down but the day was loads of fun anyway!

St. Mary’s Poppins

‘ s a y Mr Poppins

St. M

y favourite memory from St Mary’s would probably be St Mary’s Poppins. In fourth class we did Mary Poppins as our school show and I played the part of Mr Banks. I loved practicing for the show because we missed a lot of class. For the opening night I was very nervous at the start and thought I was going to forget all of my lines but when it started I just went with the flow. There were two casts. I was in cast B. It was really funny seeing all of the costume and for one night only I had a moustache! My costume was a

full suit with a bowler hat and I also had to put a lot of hair spray in my hair to flatten it down and the next day my hair was all hard and sticky. We performed the show three times over six days. There was also a raffle that took place every night and one of the nights I bought a load of tickets and won a bottle of whiskey. I then tried to sell it to some of the teachers but none of them would take my offer. There was a lot of work put in by everyone and it was all worth it.

I

t was the night of St Mary’s Poppins. We had just finished getting our makeup done. A 5th classer who was in the same scene as us had brought in this massive bag of these weird sugary cherry flavoured sweets, that gave us a MASSIVE sugar rush. We were watching The Looney Tunes Movie, it was half animated. For some reason Adam kept saying whenever something wasn’t animated he would say it is and vice versa, for some reason this made us laugh so hard. By the end of it the sugar was gone and we were all wiped.

St. Mary’s Poppins

I

remember in 4th class when we did St. Mary’s Poppins {Mary Poppins}. I was one of the maids for the Banks family. We got to school at around 4 o’ clock in the afternoon to get ready for the night. We all had to wear foundation which looked really funny on us! We got in and sat in one of the classrooms.

We all went at allocated times to go get dressed into our costumes. We were waiting around for a while for everyone to get dressed. We watched a bit of Mary Poppins and looked over our lines just to make sure that we were totally ready. After that we took some photos of everyone in their costumes. All the parents were starting to come in and the sound was getting checked. There was a lot of people in the audience so I was quite nervous! We got on stage around 8:00 and everything went very well. There was no slipups at all! Our last scene was around 9:30 when we all sang together on stage. We bowed a few times and then we got off stage to get back into our regular clothes. The night was really fun and I was buzzing after it. There was great talk about it the next morning. Everyone was complimenting each other. The next day was quite an easy day. Mr. O’ Neil also congratulated everyone on their performances. It was a great night!

W

e did Mary Poppins in 4th class. I played a small part in the play, I was a banker and I had 2 lines. The day of the show that we performed to the parents, I was in the bathroom getting changed into my suit, but I ran into a problem. The shirt I was using was old and I couldn’t figure out how to put the shirt on, because the buttons were messed up and weird.

When we were backstage we were allowed to bring treats and crap. When we were waiting for our turn to go on stage, so we stuck on Peppa Pig on the board and I was running around the classroom because I looked like I was Hugh Grant!!!

St. Mary’s Poppins

I

remember that I was a banker in ‘St. Mary’s Poppins’ and I was really happy because I had a line and we got to go backstage. When me and my fellow bankers were waiting to go on stage we all took out our water bottles and started spraying water around the class and on each other, we also decided that we would watch a couple of Peppa Pig episodes on Netflix but when we clicked into it, it said “Resume episode nine”. My favorite song that we perreformed that night was probably “Let’s go fly a kite”. I remember that we had to run around the back of the school to get to the main entrance to Valeries office to sing “Lets go fly a kite”. But when we were running around the back of the school I felt like James Bond because I was wearing a bow tie and a suit. I will really miss St. Mary’s and all the teachers and I have loads of good memories from this school.

O

ne of my favourite memories in St. Mary’s was the school play St Mary’s Poppins in 4th class. I remember how excited and nervous we were waiting in a classroom backstage for our turn. I really enjoyed being a banker and we even had business suits and top hats and fake moustaches. When we were getting on stage the teachers and SNAs wished us good luck as we passed them. The lights blinded me on stage for a second, but then I saw the crowd and we started. I had lots of fun on stage singing and dancing with the others and really enjoyed doing it. The play went really well and afterwards we took our pictures. It was great fun.

You have missed out on many of the aspects of life in school that form the greatest of memories and as parents we have missed out on sharing some of these memories with you.

This wonderful yearbook represents 8 years of education, both inside and outside of the classroom showing plenty of fun along the way.

We are hugely grateful to the whole school team in St Mary’s who have given you such a well rounded education, as evidenced in this book, with a broad range of experiences that will serve you well in life, wherever it takes you.

A sincere Thank you to your parents who have shown up, got involved, served on committees and boards, organised and helped at events, welcomed grandparents to the school each year, stamped your hand at the sponsored walk, sold tickets at the school show, to name but a few!

A very involved bunch of parents, it has to be said.

S

ome of my favourite memories from St Mary’s include on school tours when everyone would start chants and whack the seats.

Another fond memory I have of the school was when we won a Senior B competition in 5th class. We played about five teams and won all our games. My favourite day of the year is sports day because you have no work to do, the events are fun to watch and compete in and because the sweets were incredibly cheap. One funny thing that happened was when Fionn made donkey noises in the bathroom.

y favourite memory was with the Senior B’s when we won a league against other schools. We had played about 5 matches before we won the trophy in a nervy match at St Enda’s Park. At the final whistle we asked the referee what the score was and he said we won by a few points, we were delighted.

o be honest I do not have a specific favourite memory out of all of my fond memories. I think I have too many and I didn’t think I would ever say that about school, but one memory not a specific one but I remember how during the summer we used to be able to go out to the field for yard, but it was not the football we liked it was benching each other and messing around because it is not as dangerous on the yard and we started doing it in like 2nd class and we still do it to this day. It is not a particularly special thing but it is always so fun, and it reminds me of St. Mary’s.

Around The School

I

have made many great memories in St. Mary’s, some I have forgotten and some I will never forget! From Fionn making donkey noises in the bathroom to Matthew singing various songs in what he thought was “soundproof” bathrooms. Sports Days were and are always good fun and hilarious. We would get an ice-cream van in to the school and bouncy castles were set up too. One year we were able to do field sports such as penalty shootouts, highjump and rugby kicks. School tours were always memorable like the National Aquatic Centre and Causey Farm. Not mentioning any names but one day a boy surprisingly “kidnapped” a baby (probably less than 1 years old) and brought it in to the classroom. The baby was oblivious, and everybody was staring with shock at what was the youngest 4th classer ever recorded! Another highlight has to of been our production of ‘St. Mary’s Poppins’. While some people were a little annoyed with their parts I was proud to be a chimney sweeper.

I

n October 2019 when I was in 5th class we did a rugby blitz because the Rugby World Cup was on. It was made up of the 5th and 6th classes, it was all of the best countries in the competition and my team was Wales. We played tag rugby every day against other countries and it was really good fun. So many other great memories…sports days, school tours, Gaelic blitzes, Croke Park, Tionól, Communion, the National Concert Hall.

loved when we won the senior Bs Gaelic football league, someone scored a flukey goal and we all went mental. Overall an amazing time. There are many more stories but the yearbook has limited pages :) ( One more lockdown highlight is when Mr. Corish did a banana bread baking video for us all and it was a treat. He somehow managed to forget the bananas and then He zoned out for 30 seconds while holding a whisk and when he came back to earth all he said was Whisk( I think we can all agree that it was one of the funniest lockdown memories. The Teachers and SNAs loved it.

My favourite days are sports day because you do not have to do work and you get to have a very fun day.

hese memories are some of my favourite things we did in St Mary’s - Our school tour in 4th class was by far the best school tour we had to this day. We went to the National Aquatic Centre and then we went bowling. Summer camps were always really fun. Capture the flag was probably one of the games everyone would make a fuss about. Cross country was also fun at Terenure College.

You got a day off school and were with your friends for the whole thing. Mathew would sing in the bathroom and Fionn would make donkey noises and cat noises.

y favorite memory of St. Mary’s was our fourth-class sports day when we got to set up stalls with sweets with mini games and roam around the school without the teachers really caring. I bought one of the pie faces off a stall and went around the yard pie facing people and I was having a great time until I pie faced Tadhg who is allergic to dairy and he started crying and then I started crying because I thought I just killed him. Thankfully he only got a small rash and everything was fine but the pie faces have been banned ever since. The rest of the day was great though. For one of our sports day races it was to balance a sliotar on a hurl while running so I had my hurl with me so I played a bit of hurling with a few other people who had theirs. Then the high jump set wasn’t being used so me and a few others went down to it and took turns on it. Finally, towards the end of the day I kicked a rugby ball around with some people from my class.

n the 22nd October, St. Mary’s Rathfarnham were about to face St. Mary’s Marino at 12:10 (Croke Park the venue).

The boys of St. Mary’s Rathfarnham were taken out of the classroom at about 9:00 to get all their gear together. They went outside for a small kick-around before a massive send-off from the whole school. The coaches said a little bit about each player and the people in the school observed it all. Everybody in the school got to see which player was playing in each position.

S

ports Day takes place every year in June. There is lots of stuff do to during sports day. At some time during the day everyone in your year will gather on the field and do some races. For the weeks leading up to sports day you practice the races and pick teams.

Other than sports 4th, 5th and 6th are allowed to set up stalls on the yard to try and make a few bob. One year 4th, 5th & 6th class took part in some challenges that were set out on the pitch like a rugby penalties, penalties & high jump. Some of the parents set up some shops for popcorn and sweets. When you’re doing your races your parents are allowed to come and watch. An ice-cream van comes to the school every year for sports day. There is also a bouncy castle set up on the field and every class is allowed a bit of time on it. There’s also a smaller bouncy castle for younger brothers & sisters. At the end of all of your races everyone gets a medal.

The players got out of the school and they were sent-off by the parents of the players. They all got their partners on the bus and there was a lot of tension amongst the players with nobody wanting to slip-up in the game later-on. Then they arrived in Croke Park. They had about a 5-minute warm-up before the game started. Josh Mooney was the stand-out player on the day. He powered past everybody a lot to put him through for goals. He put the ball in the back of the net a good-few-times Overall, the score-line gave a good idea of how the game went. When St. Mary’s Rathfarnham got their first goal, they all just flooded in. It finished St. Mary’s Rathfarnham 8-13 0-08 St. Mary’s Marino. After the game, there were massive celebrations in Rathfarnham. The boys got a goodie bag and went to McDonalds for a meal. A successful outing for St. Mary’s Rathfarnham boys.

ne of my favourite memories was when I was leaving and everyone and Mr. Rooney brought in gifts for me. We also went out and had pizzas and lots of sweets from Mr. Rooney.

Another great memory was when we had our school play, Mary Poppins. I was dressed up as a chimney sweeper with all my friends and we had great craic.

St. Mary’s is a great school and I have lots of friends still in contact with me from St. Mary’s.

Around The School

I

was always fond of the Halloween Concerts in school. Whenever my class and I were in the concert, it was always great fun. The songs always very good and everybody was in a good form.

One thing I was very certain of was how great the songs were. I wholeheartedly think that the best songs came from the Halloween concerts rather than the Christmas or Easter plays. The ability to dress up with a special costume was great, and there was a lot of fun, seeing everyone’s original ‘disguise’. It was always very enjoyable, especially since in the next week or even a few days, the Halloween break would come. Those concerts will be one of the many great things I will continue to remember in a good light about St. Mary’s, even after I leave this school.

y favourite memory of St Mary’s was when we went to the Aquatic Centre for our fourth-class school trip. I enjoyed the craic in the pool and also liked the bowling afterwards and the game machines.

We went to Croke Park and watched our team win the cup.

Even though I wasn’t playing in the game, I still liked watching it. Another memory, was when we all hid in the bathrooms hiding from Mr O’Neil and when he found us, he wasn’t happy.

I also liked when our class went to Clara Lara during the summer holidays and it’s really good.

he sponsored walk happens every year and it is a fundraiser for the school. Everyone would get sponsorships from family or friends. It could range from a fiver to fifty euro. The entire school gathers in Marley Park and walks around the whole park. At the end of the walk two people standing at the small bridge would hand out tickets to everyone who had completed the trail. Then you could walk over to a stall and hand over your ticket for a bag of tayto crisps. You were only supposed to get one packet. However lots of people found ways to get more! The easiest method was to cross the river and act like you had finished the walk. After one or two years the people organising the walk caught on and one or two people would be stationed by the river watching for anyone trying to cross.

However there was other places you could cross. My personal best was six packets of crisps I had to bring four jumpers but it was worth it. After all your friends had finished the walk you could do anything you wanted to. You could have a huge football match or play a big game of hide and seek. It is a great way to get everyone in the school together and to fundraise for the school and its needs. Overall it is a great school memory and is a lot of fun.

or 4th class sports day our class did lots of races. Afterwards we went on the bouncy castles and then we went to the stalls.

We swapped between selling on them and going to other peoples ones. One race I remember was the three legged race.

I was doing the three legged race with Donal Manzer, we were about to come in first but then we fell and we eventually came in second.

I also did the relay race. I cannot remember if we won or not but I sprinted as fast as I could. Sports Day was good fun, the stalls were great and the selling was fun.

Play Your Part In The Arts

P

YPIA (Play Your Part In The Arts) is a thing that St Mary’s does where there is a theme for the whole school. Last time the theme was Roald

Dahl so the class I was in was 2nd class and we did Alice in Wonderland, and we had lots of cool stuff. We had Alice’s legs hanging from the roof and there was a mad hatter’s tea party and the 6th classers ate our cupcakes.

remember in 2nd class painting and carving things themed off of the popular book ``BFG’’ (Big Friendly Giant) written by the popular author Roald Dahl, We made large statues of the Giant as well as lollipops and other things like that.

When the final day came, the rest of my class and me went around other classrooms to look at the creations they made. Some of my favourites being a miniature Viking village. At the end of the day, the things we made were given away via a raffle, and I myself won a massive Styrofoam lollipop. I wish we could do PYPIA again since then we would have less work to do.

Fun Memories

RTE Filming for Primetime

W

hen we were in fifth class, RTE came into Mr MacRéamoinn’s class to film us for Primetime.

They wanted to interview us to get our opinions on whether homework should be abolished or not. At the time Loreto Girls School was trialing no homework. Zac Boland joined our class for the filming because his twin sister is in Loreto and she didn’t have to do homework but he did. We had a partner and we had to list the pros and cons of homework.

Some of us had to say a piece for the camera which was exciting but also nerve racking. There was the presenter, the cameraman and the microphone man who had a giant furry microphone. When it was on Primetime it was fun to see the school on TV as well as Mr O’Riordan, Mr MacRéamoinn and the boys in our class.

I

n third class my mom, Tara, who is a scientist, came in to do some science experiments. We made volcanoes and messed with dry ice. In fourth class, we collected soil samples to see what wild yeasts were in them. It was called the Wild Yeast Project run by the Butler lab in UCD. They found the yeast Lodderomyces elongisporus in my sample from the school pitch. Seán C O’Farrell took some soil from his back garden, and they found Kazachstania servazzii living in it, but we named it Big Butt Magowski It sometimes makes food and drinks sour. UCD chose Seán’s yeast for further investigation.

y favourite memory in St Mary’s was in 4th class on our school trip when we went to the Aquatic centre and went to the bowling alley afterwards. The Aquatic centre was great. There were slides, wave machines and my favourite was the boogie board simulator. On the simulator, it is a wave made from the machine and you lie down on the board and try to balance. The bowling was great fun as well, we were split into groups and played in our teams. After the bowling was over, we could play in the arcade which was really fun.

have loads of great memories in St Mary’s but my favourite one would be the school trip to the Aqua Centre in 4th class Mr O Neill’s. First off, we had ten minutes of reading, then we got all our stuff ready for the trip. After around 20 minutes the buses arrived, and we all walked to them. When everyone was on the bus, it started and so did all the chanting, singing and shouting. We played loads of games on the way and then we reached the aquatic centre.

Everyone went mad and Mr O’Neil and Mr Casey got everyone off the bus and we all walked into the aquatic centre, everyone got into their swimming gear on and ran into the first pool. A few of us went to massive slides first, then we swam to the lazy river. I remember racing to the end of the lazy river. We then went to the wave machine.

After around 40 minutes, the teachers told us we can have one more swim around, so Me, Adam, Tadhg and Rory did the biggest slide. We then all got changed again and went to Leisure Plex. We did a bit of bowling then had lunch. We then all ran around wasting our money and having fun. Then it was finally time to go back to school. We went to the bus and got into it. On the way home we talked about how fun it was then started shouting and singing. When we arrived back, we were all in a mad hurry to the classroom so everyone sprinted back.

t 11:30 on Thursday we were heading down to the local park, St. Enda’s. We did it with room 7 and were split into 4 teams.

We would play against everyone in the group stage then 2 semi-finals and then 2 finals. My team were in the semi-final and lost 1-0 which meant that we were in the shield finals. The match ended 0-0 with a disallowed goal so it went to penalties. Everyone was missing the penalties and Mikolaj got the winning penalty and we all celebrated.

For our 4th class school tour we went to the Aquatic Center and LeisurePlex. The Aquatic center had giant waterslides of all kinds and pools to swim in. When we were finished we showered, got back on the bus and drove to Leisure Plex. The class was split into groups to play bowling. We got lunch to eat while you were awaiting your next turn.

y favourite memory from St. Mary’s was in 4th class. It was the start of the day, and we were doing maths when someone asked about a question that was maths related.

Mr. O’Neill answered their question but for the next hour and a half we just kept asking him random questions, like how banks make money to who would be the principal if literally every teacher was out. One hour and a half later when Mr. O’Neill realised what time it was he was cool about it and just let us take our lunches out early.

y favourite memory? Jeez, I’ve had so many, but if I were to pick one, I’d pick the pizza party we had during 2nd class. It was a good memory. So, we presented our projects (based on the country, China) and it went off like a normal day, heck, even the class was saying that there was going to be pizza. Of course, I heard about it. And got excited. And the teacher came in, LOADED with pizza boxes. And the crowd went WILD! I got pepperoni pizza and it tasted SO GOOD! We watched an old movie called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang(1968). It was about a flying car. I’m sorry this was very short, there wasn’t much to talk about.

Fun Memories

“The Yoghurt Incident”

M

y favorite St Mary’s memory is when Finian Moran sat on a yogurt. It was in 4th class in Mr O’Neill’s class, myself Finian Moran, Donal Manzor and Riagan Dunne were sitting at a table for lunch. We were all eating and then Finian went to the toilet and Donal [who was sitting on my left and Finian on my right] got up and took Finian’s half eaten yogurt, put it on Finian’s chair then when Finian came in we held back the giggles and played it cool. When he sat down we burst out laughing. I got a drop of strawberry on my knee and the rest was on Finian’s bottom.

ne of my favourite memories from St Mary’s is when during a regular 4th class little break I decided to go to the toilet, but I made the mistake of opening my yoghurt before I left. While I was gone, without me knowing Donal had placed my yoghurt on my chair. When I came back from the toilet I noticed some people acting very suspicious but didn’t know why, so I sat down directly onto my lovely apple yoghurt. I knew I had been tricked and was furious and was annoyed. I then had to change into my new shorts which I had luckily brought with me. I really could not imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t brought my shorts as the yoghurt went everywhere. I eventually cooled down and had a laugh with the rest of my friends.

y favourite memory of St Mary’s was in 4th class in Mr O’ Neill’s when Finian went to the bathroom and he opened his yogurt before he went, Donal put his yogurt on his chair and when he came back he sat on it and he got it all over his tracksuit bottoms. It was a very funny incident.

ne of my favourite memories from primary school was the fourth class school trip to the aquatic centre. As soon as we entered the gate to the school we went on the buses. I remember Sam G. was late and we had to wait. At about 9:30 we began our day to the aquatic centre....

At 10 o’clock we arrived, and I remember seeing other schools also on their school trip at the aquatic centre which just shows how popular it is. We all got changed and began our day splashing. For most of the time I did the slides. Towards the end all of us did a race in the swimming stream. 5 hours of splashing and having a ball came to an end just liked everything else did. What a fun day it was! Overall, that was one of my favourite memory from primary school at St Mary’s BNS Rathfarnham.

he St. Mary’s bookfair occurs around the time of the parent teacher meetings. This gives the school the opportunity to raise money to spend on books. Every class participates in the book fair and classes are encouraged to spend more time reading books.

The smaller classes participate in paired reading, which is when a child from an older class reads you a book to help you learn. All classes enjoy the bookfair and often kids stay longer after school to read or to hang out around the hall where the bookfair is located. Many kids enjoy and willingly participate in this annual event. The teachers also enjoy this opportunity to help kids learn about the lessons inside books.

On the first day of the bookfair huge bookstands are wheeled in and placed inside the hall. These are suited to different ages like 8-9 or 10-11. These shelves are full with hundreds of wonderful books about everything from history to sports. This broad range of topics attracts kids with specific tastes. My brothers and I often look at books that match our interests like history, science and sports. We often single out a specific book which interests us and we are given money to buy it. Over my years in St. Mary’s I have really enjoyed the bookfair and always look forward to it. I will miss it.

y favourite memory from St. Mary’s is the Mary Poppins play in March 2019, because when we were putting on our makeup. I had to get my moustache done really fast and it looked like I had Hitler’s moustache. It was really funny and it made the play much better.

The National Concert Hall

I

t was a weekday in late November and the choir from fourth, fifth and sixth class arrived at the school at around 5 o’ clock. We waited until everyone arrived and then boarded a bus to the. National Concert Hall. When we got there we did a practise and then we went into a massive hall and waited, we ate some food that we brought. After about 45 minutes in the hall out to the stage which was about ten metres above the crowd. We sung loads of Christmas songs with other schools. When it finished we were all really tired. It was an amazing experience and a great memory.

remember going to the National Concert Hall in November 2018. The school choir went and all the parents went too.

We all got on the bus at around 5 o’ clock in the evening.

We were all in our Christmas jumpers and it was great to see everyone so dressed up. From our class it was me, Ríagan and Ricardo that went. There was a lot of other people there too. We got to the NHC at around 6 o’ clock and we all went behind stage. We got on stage at 7:30 and sang our first song.

The orchestra did a few songs until we got to our next song.

After that there was an interval so we got off stage and had a 20 minute break. When we came back on again we sang our next few songs which were a few Christmas carols. We finished off with our last song and bowed a few times. The concert finished around 10:30 pm. We got our stuff and went home. We got to go to school later the next day so that was a treat!

t was the Poppins for room where had the honour

night where we were performing St Mary’s the parents and we were having fun in the we were waiting for our big banker number. I of being one of the boys who tipped their hat.

So we were on stage at this point and we were starting the song. About halfway through the song and getting up to the hat tipping scene so then my head gets itchy so when I scratch my head and I realize something is missing so im patting my head franticly and I realize “I forgot my bowler hat” so I start gesturing to the teacher that I forgot my hat and they gesture back to just tip the air, the big tipping is creeping closer so I do the most weird looking thing you can see in a show - I tip air. May I remind you we had a lot of sugar that night and it made all of us loopy.

So to this day if you check one of the second shows of St Mary’s Poppins you will see a dark haired boy dressed as a banker frantically patting his head and tipping nothing.

hristmas plays in St. Mary’s are always really fun, with lyrical masterpieces such as “I want a hippopotamus for Christmas” or “rocking around the Christmas tree”. Everyone knew all the words to most of the songs and it’s always fun singing along to these Christmas bangers. In junior infants, the Christmas play was really fun dressing up as stars and shepherds with towels and robes. It’s also pretty funny watching the junior infants play in later years. I’ve always preferred the Halloween plays though because the songs are just way better and you can dress up in a costume. The Christmas plays are still fun though. Sometimes.

y favourite memory in St. Mary’s was when my class and the two other classes went to Aquazone, we all went on the bus to get there. When we got there, we were not the only school who went for there for the school trip, because it was crowded. I went with Darius and James and it was very fun.

y favourite memory at St. Mary’s was when I did stand-up comedy in third class for St. Mary’s Got Talent. I had been preparing and memorising my lines for the last few days.

The sketch was by a comedian called Jerry Seinfeld who is one of my favourite comedians. It involved Halloween as a kid and horse riding.

After all of the acts were done and the votes were counted up it was announced on the intercom that I had come second. The person in first was someone who did opera for about seven seconds. It reminded me of another sketch by Jerry Seinfeld where he talked about coming second.

remember back in 2016 (First Class), I won Write-ABook for the second time, we were all making our books and mine was The Lost Penguin. The book was about a penguin egg that rolled down a snow dune while its father wasn’t looking it hatched a few minutes later beside two whales named Wally and Mr. Funny they went on a giant adventure to find their mother partying on an ice shelf with her friends. When the write-a-books were sent off everyone was nervous and really exited a few weeks pass and the other books from the other school came in I remember one called banana city where a banana goes on a massive adventure, and they won the award out of their class. A few more weeks and our classes came back and, I came first place, me and my mum were invited to a fancy five star hotel in Blackrock to receive our award, we went out to the award room and there was so many people! We sat for about half an hour and soon I was called up, they congratulated me and then gave me a certificate and a medal which I keep in my room to this day.

n 3rd class sports day my class had 1 relay race, an obstacle race and then the bouncy castle. I didn’t do very well in those races, but however. We then moved onto the stalls where I met my bigger brother Brendan. He was having a water balloon war with his friends. I joined in and I was at an unfair disadvantage. Just me and my brother vs 6 x 13 year olds! After school that day, me and my brother played on our Xbox and enjoyed the warm weather.

y best memory of St Mary’s is St Mary’s Poppins because we practised everyday. I got a part in the show, it was a really small part in the show. I was a banker and I had 2 lines. I had to hold a really heavy piece of wood, it looked really nice.

I loved performing for the people who came. The day we performed for the parents we went to the makeup room and we got foundation.

I think I had too much on because I looked pretty orange. When we were coming back from the makeup room we walked through the staff room, then we went to the classroom. We put on Peppa Pig and we had a good laugh.

Seán P. and I were messing, and he got asked a question and it was so easy but he got it wrong, so I started laughing and it made him laugh and Mr. Casey got mad because he was laughing for getting a question wrong and somehow no one even was laughing and I didn’t get into trouble. It was also funny when Matthew would sing in the toilets and when Fionn would make animal noises.

ne of my favourite memories in St. Mary’s was in our 4th class school tour when we went to Aquazone. It was very fun seeing each other on the cameras in the waterslide and we would do poses to the guy who worked there looking at the cameras.

It was also fun trying to jump on and push each other in the lazy river but we were all joking in the end, I think!

In 4th class we did the St Mary’s Poppins play, 5th and 6th were involved too. I went for one of the parts and I was delighted when I got chosen as one of the constables. I had to do lots of practicing and revising with Ms.Giblin and Ms.Dean. They gave us scripts and we each had to learn our own specific lines. As the constable I had to wear a really heavy duffel coat, a police hat and grey trousers. On the days of the show Ms.Houston put makeup on me and painted a moustache on my face, we all had really good fun doing the show and loads of people came to watch!

e went to aqua zone for our 4th class school tour. It had loads of water slides, a wave pool and this weird bubbly thing in the ground. The first thing I did was go down the blue water slide with Luke Duggan. I went up there on my own thinking that it was a one man ride but it was two, but I saw Luke and we went down together. Next, me, Connor and a lot more people went to the wave pool. After that we got back on the bus and went to leisure plex. We played arcade games and then got on the bus back home, my mom didn’t show up so I had to go home with Luke.

t was Sports day and everyone was looking forward to it. This was the first year we were allowed to do stalls (and last) .There were lots of different events. I took part in the relay and the three legged race. I was going to do it with Elliot, but he was sick on the day and I did it with Donal Manzor. It was a lot of fun. We were sprinting up the pitch and a couple of metres before the finish line we fell, but then we got up quickly and came in second, it was really funny.

Then afterwards we went out and did our stalls. I did a stall with James Daly (who has left the school), Tom Dowling and Seán C. O’Farrell. We were selling cupcakes, brownies, flapjacks. I brought in a BIG M&M jar and people had to guess how many were in it, nobody really came that close, there was like 400 or more in it and the closest somebody got was around 300 in it. That was my favourite sports day ever.

y favourite memory in school was when RTÉ came into school and they picked our class and I said something about homework. The RTÉ camera crew were walking around the classroom filming us and I couldn’t concentrate because there was a huge camera behind me. On a Thursday, Primetime was on and we all watched the news and when it was over the mums were laughing when I said “but what if the parents don’t get the homework” and I wished I never said it.

Fun Memories

y favourite memory from St Mary’s was the entire process of St Mary’s Poppins.

It was very exciting, even though I didn’t get a big role. When we were in the “waiting room” we had gotten so hyper from eating sweets. Some guy in the room was playing Fortnite on his phone.

Then going on to the stage to do the show was kind of scary. Everyone looked so funny in their make-up and suits. I felt quite stupid when I forgot my line and everyone was staring at me.

Anyway, St Mary’s Poppins was very enjoyable and we had to perform the show two times I think. That was the memory that stood out to me.

y memory was in 4th class when Mr Lyons brought in his PS3 on the last day of 4th class. We had a big FIFA tournament with all the class, I think I was with Daniel. We got to the semis and got knocked out by Seán Conroy and his partner. Also I remember at the start of the day Finlay brought in a jumbo pack of crisps. Me and Darius were the only ones that liked prawn cocktail flavour and we savaged them all. That was my favourite memory in St. Mary’s.

ne of my favourite memories from St. Mary`s is when we won the Senior B Gaelic Football League. We played about five or six games and won all of them. Our last game to win the league was on a sunny day in St. Enda’s Park. We played very well, and I fondly remember scoring a point from the very corner of the pitch. After the game we asked the ref had we won, and he confirmed it. We celebrated and I had a great day out with my friends.

In 4th class there was a football tournament at the end of the year. It was 15 degrees plus nearly every day. It was so much fun and a great way to end the year. It was great fun when we went to Croke Park last year and the school won the Final. It was really enjoyable, and the after party in the school for all the teams was amazing!

he funniest memory I have was when Fionn was making donkey noises in the bathroom and we could all hear him from outside. He came out and looked really confused when Mr Casey asked him if he was a cat.

ne of my greatest and funniest memories throughout my years in St. Mary’s was something that lasted about 2 – 3 years. It was one of my classmates always singing in the bathroom. It mainly was humming, but it was hilarious, while working you would just hear Matthew “hum hmm hum.” What made it better was that it was not purposefully made to be a joke

It happened much more than once and whenever he came out of the bathroom, he would just be confused as to why everyone was staring at him and giggling. Even the teachers couldn’t help but laugh.

n 4th class we went to Aquazone. We got on the bus and set out to Aquazone. We got off the bus. The place was full of people. We went to the changing room and when we were ready we went to the pool. I went to the resting place thing and I didn’t like that. I played a chasing game with my friends and it was terrifying. Then I jumped over the waves and practised my diving skills. I had a great time.

When I was playing for the school I was a keeper and the goal was huge. My defenders didn’t help at all. I let in about 3-6 goals. I was really annoyed when I let in the goals. I was then put outfield and I was glad. I did not want to stay in goals for much longer. That was my favourite memory in St. Mary’s.

he Tomi Reichental visit was one of my favourite memories in St Mary’s and I actually met him at my golf club as well. The Tomi Reichental visit was when he came talked about his book and the holocaust and then later he signed books. this took part during the book fair this was really fun cause we got no homework I remember reading the book for the rest of the day.

ne of my favourite memories from my time in St. Mary’s was when Tomi Reichental came to the school to talk to us about his time in a Nazi concentration camp. When he came into the hall everybody gave him a big clap. When he sat down, one or two boys from each class asked him a question. He then spent a couple of minutes answering them. He gave great detail; we were all in awe.

In fact I was one of the boys from my class who asked him a question. He had previously written a book on his time in the concentration camp, his book was available to buy in the book fair. While he was there he was offering to sign his book for anyone who wanted it signed, but the book was very popular so everyone wanted to get it signed. I think this was one of the most amazing events that has ever happened in the school.

I also loved the 4th class tour with Mr. Casey to the National Aquatic Centre.

But my best, best memory was going on the bus with my class to Croke Park and St. Mary’s lifted the winners’ cup. I really enjoyed all the Dublin player visitors to the school like Michael Darragh Macauley and the Sam Maguire Cup! The rest of my memories are as follows: Roopert visiting every week and especially when Tomi Reichental the survivor of World War 2 he visited our school and gave us a talk about his survival story.

I also got his book and he signed it for me. All the school thought he was a great visitor.

n second class, we did write a book for the second time, everyone was excited and nervous. A few weeks passed and everyone had written their books, mine was ‘The lost penguin’, a story about how a penguin egg called Pep rolled down a mountain while its father wasn’t looking and hatched later next to two whales, Wally and Mr. Funny. They went on a big expedition to try find their mum and when they had just lost hope Pep’s mum and her friends were having a party and they all went over to her and Pep’s family was reunited. We sent the books off and a few more weeks passed and we read the other schools books.

I can’t remember much of them but there was one called ‘Banana city’, it was about a banana going on a journey around the city. One month after, the results were back and with a stroke of luck I came in first place! We were invited to Fitzpatrick hotel in Blackrock and a lot of people were there, one by one we all went to get our reward. That is one of my favourite school memories.

Grandparents’ Day O

n grandparents day, most people’s grandparents came into the school, sometimes from different counties.

Everybody had to come up with questions to ask the grandparents. The grandparents would tell stories from when they were young. They would talk about their schools, what sports they played, hobbies and more. Everything was so much different then, than it is now. They would all be scared of the cane. It was funny to see all of their accents as they were so different. We would sometimes sing a song or show them what we were learning. After that they would go into the hall and have biscuits and tea.

remember when I first came to St. Mary’s, I was a bit nervous and a little anxious. It wasn’t that bad though because I had moved school quite a lot of times. There was a lot of new faces and the classroom was very different.

On grandparent’s day (last year) all of our grandparents came in and talked about their childhood in school. My two grandads came. It was a nice experience for me, because that I had never had before come because I was living in Australia.

I also remember when we went to Rathfarnham castle for the scavenger hunt. My team was Liam, Yashva and Oisín. We were given maps and had to look for different things around the park. In the end we won and got 3 subject passes. I have made lots of friends at St. Mary’s and have enjoyed it very much.

Fun Memories

W

e would leave our class and make are way to the hall. There would be shelves full of books. Books of different genres and books for kids of different ages. There were pens, pencils, posters and rubbers, what a magical experience! Something I would do and every other person in our class, was that we would hide the books we wanted then come back with our parents for the parent teacher meeting. You would retrieve the book that was hidden in the baby book section and purchase it acting as innocent as you could, read a few pages and get bored, but you would still do the same thing next year!

e were in 4th class when the school play was put on. It was called St Mary’s Poppins. We were in Cast B and everyone enjoyed it. It was great fun offstage and getting makeup and costumes was interesting! There were Champions League quarter-finals and everyone watched one but for some reason the room I was in did not show any of them. Our class had plenty of key characters from Nannies to Michael. It was a great experience for everyone. The closing night was probably the highlight with the amazing atmosphere. Everyone put in a great performance and did St Mary’s proud. The art and stage were brilliant and gave us all a thrill to be part of the very special event. The shows would only happen once in every three years so it was the only time that a lot of us would ever act in front of a crowd. It was one of my favourite memories from St Mary’s.

he 40 year anniversary was a great day; a lot happened. I, along with my class were in 2nd class with Mr Rooney. On the day the whole school lined up on the field (pre Covid it was 2017) and a drone took a picture from very high in the sky. Then we had an extra-long Tionol talking about the history of the school such as: The year it opened: 1977 The first ever teachers: Pat Corbett, Fintan Walsh, John McElligott, Kevin Hennigan, Dónall Ó Murchú and Ivan O’Callaghan and the first Principle: Mr. Jim Molloy and much more.

But then we made St Mary’s history by making the first ever time capsule. In it we put a Hurley, a newspaper snippet, a football, some food wrappers (clean ones) and much more. I remember vaguely where it was buried but I’m pretty sure it was beside the sandpit. We were also given no homework so overall a great day.

y favourite school tour was in second class when we went to Crystal Maze. We had to go to school a little bit earlier than usual. The journey down was about an hour and a half although I remember it being a lot longer. It was an adventure place where you all went into groups of three or four and completed challenges like stacking Jenga. There was a muddy river where we walked through it and pushed each other around. It was great fun, and we also got a few treats in the shop afterwards.

here was a play a few years ago for 4th 5th and 6th class, I was in 4th class. Me and about 11 other boys went for auditions and we all got roles as bankers. I was really excited. On the night of the play before we went out on stage I was pretty nervous but when I went on stage it was amazing, all the lights and the crowd and the teachers watching and making me feel awkward. We sang a few songs and it was great but I really liked when everybody sang “Lets Go Fly A Kite”. I had a really great time and I’m so glad I did it.

n 3rd class at the end of the year there was a soccer mini world cup. It was 3rd class up to 5th class with a few 6th classers who didn’t go to Delphi. I was on team Portugal with Max and a few others. We played very bad in the first game but then won the rest of our matches until we made it to the final. We were against Mexico who were doing very well. We won the final and I scored a goal. It was a great feeling to win it and it is one of my favourite and best memories at St.Mary’s.

ne of my favourite memories in St. Mary’s was when we did St. Mary’s Poppins. We had to do trials which involved singing and reading lines. I was disappointed when they read out the main cast because I wasn’t there, but I was happy to be involved. I was a banker. We did loads of practising with Ms Dean, Ms Giblin and Ms Houston every second day, and if not, everyday. We missed loads of school which made me really happy. When April came around, I got really worried because I had the longest line out of the bankers and I only knew half of it! When the day came for the show to be performed for the parents, I became really nervous. We were backstage and we somehow managed to bribe the teacher to allow us to watch a Champions League match. We had loads of sweets and a 6th Classer brought his phone in and we played Fortnite. When we went onto stage, all the nerves went away. We sang our song, I said my lines and we went backstage again. It was really fun but I had not finished, because, near the end of the play, we had to go to the back of the audience, to sing ‘Lets Go Fly A Kite’. Overall, it was a really good day that I’ll never forget it.

ne of my favourite memories of St. Mary’s was playing for the school. It was the last game of the school season and we were home against Drumcondra. We thought that Drumcondra wouldn’t show up because it was 10-15 minutes till kick off and they weren’t there. They came 2 minutes later and only had 5 minutes to warm up. We were more ready than them so we had a slight advantage. I was a goalkeeper at the start and then I was a forward for the end of the game. I scored 2 points and no goals. It was a great day for the team because we won. It was a great way to end the season.

he Communion took place in May when we were in Second Class. I remember we had to go to the school roughly fortyfive minutes before the mass began. We were all dressed in our school uniforms and had practised all of our songs and responses.

After we waited in the classroom watching a movie we walked down to the church. The church was packed full of parents and grandparents. We all sat in separate rows with our family. Every ten to fifteen minutes we would go up to the alter and sing a song or read out a prayer. One of the class favourites is Circle of Friends. The mass lasted about half an hour and we went back to the school hall where the Parents Association had arranged loads of buns and drinks for us.

We all got our treats and went out onto the field. We played some football and completely ruined our uniforms. After we had finished in the school we all went home where there was even more food made and a Communion Cake. I had a great day and everyone in the class really enjoyed it. My First Communion was one of my favourite moments In St. Mary’s.

ne of my plentiful good memories from St. Mary’s BNS was the 4th class “Aquatic Centre” school trip. I remember being very excited even weeks before the trip. When we finally got on the bus and arrived, I was not let down. The place was amazing, there was surfing, big slides and easy-to-use lockers. Every single person in the class enjoyed it at the time. My favorite ride was the Wave Machine, you’d go around in what was like the outline of a circle and be pushed by the waves forward. At the middle there was a hot tub, it was a good break if you were tired. I went on that water ride many times. The trip organized by the school was a great idea, and I wish I could go there again.

have watched the boys grow over their eight years in Primary school. I remember the small little boys in Junior Infants who waved to me as they passed my office on the to the halla for P.E. Now, they are mature 6th class boys – some taller than me!

Wherever the future takes you boys, I hope you will be happy.

Spread your wings and follow your dreams. Work hard, set goals and do your very best to achieve them. Be kind and tolerant of others. Always remember and be proud that you are a St. Mary’s Rathfarnham boy.

ary Curtin and I had a fantastic year teaching this fun group of boys in 3rd Class.

I recall with fondness their enthusiasm for school work as well as extra-curricular activities.

They greatly enjoyed the Young Engineers programme and I remember being so impressed with the skills the boys showed and the machines they produced.

The boys worked well in groups for many activities and always came across as a lovely group of friends. They had a keen interest in science, especially when Tara came in to carry out some very enjoyable experiments. We had a great day in Fort Lucan for the school tour, where the sun shone all day and many of the boys got soaked on the water slides! This class also showed a talent for performing on stage both in singing and acting. It was no surprise that a number of them stood out on the big stage during ‘Mary Poppins’ the following year – we may even have a few singing bankers in our local AIB or Bank of Ireland in the future! I just loved their rendition of “Fidelity Fiduciary Bank”. I have no doubt these boys will go far. My wish for you is that you stay in touch with each other. Your primary school friends are your friends for life. Just remember, you will always be a St. Mary’s boy and I hope that is something you are very proud of. All my best wishes for the future to every one of you.

he year I taught the boys was my very first year to ever teach a class… and what a year we had! Some fond memories I recall are Mary’s bear, China projects, when Buster came to school, Oreo milkshakes, pizza party after an inspector visit, Christmas disco, Stitch the elf and our very special First Holy Communion.

One of my favourite memories was when Johnny’s mum Fiona came and worked with us for a week to help with PYPIA. With her help we transformed our classroom into a crazy wonderland which included a rabbit hole, a swirling vortex, mad hatter’s hats and Alice dangling from the ceiling. It was a pleasure and a joy to teach you boys, you were always so mannerly, kind and respectful. As your journey in St. Mary’s comes to an end I would like to wish you the very best of luck in your future. Be kind, be happy and most importantly be yourselves! have very special memories of this year’s 6th class from Senior Infants. We had a very busy year with loads of fun and activity. I remember especially going to Newgrange farm on our school tour and the fun you all had on mini diggers in the sandpit. Also, the spin we got on the tractor and trailer where you all spotted the leprechauns’ clothesline and the giant’s bath. The boys went home tired but very happy that day!

Your performances on the stage at Halloween and Christmas in your spectacular costumes were superb. It is wonderful to see how you all have grown and matured over the years in St. Mary’s. How quickly the years have gone! I have no doubt you will all go on to do great things.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all every happiness in secondary school and in the future.

t has been a pleasure to get to know these classes over the last two years. The boys that I have worked with in groups and on a one-to-one basis have been friendly, hardworking and great fun. They have had a fantastic attitude to their work.

It is a credit to them all how they have coped with the school closures and remote learning.

This resilience will stand to them in the future. I worked with these classes when they were in 4th class when they did a remarkable job taking part in the school show ‘St. Mary’s Poppins’.

Whether they had a job backstage, acting and dancing in a group scene or in a main role, they made the whole experience so enjoyable. What a talented bunch!

I

taught Mr. Rooney’s boys in fourth class and have lots of good memories of them. They were one of those classes that were pretty quirky and the teacher had to go with that madness to survive! I mean this as a compliment. There were all sorts of different personalities but the mixture somehow worked and the boys were very good to each other and had great fun together.

This was the year of our school concert St. Mary’s Poppins, and the boys took on their roles, big or small, with great enthusiasm. They were a very sporty class too and lots of the boys represented the school on football, hurling and athletics teams. PE games were VERY competitive. Be it rugby, basketball, soccer, rounders or tiddlywinks, the boys went at it with all the seriousness of a World Cup final. I remember the boys taking part enthusiastically in their parts in the reading of Harry Potter and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, filming our version of Ireland beating the All Blacks, Young Engineers and many lively class debates and chats.

I look back with fond memories at 2018/2019 school year when teaching you. Each of you have talents and it was a pleasure to help you to find them and to use them.

Bring those skills and talents with you. As you move onto your next stage in your education, remember to keep in touch with your friends from Mary’s. Look out for each other. I know I still meet up with some of my friends from when I was a student in St. Mary’s and it’s great to remember all the fun times we had when we were in school.

have been with Mr. Corish’s 6th Class boys for 4 years.

They are a great bunch of boys. Stand out moments were going to Croke Park on 22nd October 2019 when St Mary’s brought home the trophy and Luke Duggan and Matthew Lehane represented our class on the field. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by players and supporters. Cillian Gilbert for always having the best Halloween costumes! Frank Fahy bailing our class out many times by playing the piano at Tionol. Fionn Coughlan, the maths king of the class who made all quiver in a times table battle! Sean Cleary and Matt Dennehy for their great wit, always very entertaining. Our super keen footballers Max Mulhern, Callum Duffy, Eoin Logan, Conor Dawson and Sean P O’Farrell, everyone wants them on their team! Mikolaj Felendesz for his amazing interest and knowledge on all things World War 2. The always smiling Hugo Mulligan with the best nickname in the class, Mugsy, envied by all! Sean Bolger and Paddy Slattery Reilly, two wonderful young gentlemen to be proud of. Our wonderful artists Jake Murphy and Zac Boland whom all the boys would copy for inspiration. Peter Cashin, our wonderful debater and Lugh Bulfin, forever the kindest diplomat. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be in the company of these young boys, I wish them every success in their future lives. i Boys, Congratulations on graduating from St. Mary’s Boys School. I have no doubt you have all truly enjoyed your time in primary school and have made friends that will last a lifetime.

I had the pleasure of teaching some of you when you were in 2nd class while also getting to know the rest of 2nd Class that year. We had some great memories from Young Engineers coming in each week, school tours and making your First Holy Communion. It was a very enjoyable year and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.

e had a fantastic year in Room 15 with 3rd Class in 2018. I have many fond memories of that year and it is fantastic to see how the boys have matured and are ready for the next step in their education.

We did lots of projects during the year, with the Counties project being a particular highlight. Everyone wanted to choose Wexford for their project! Lego Young Engineers was also a highlight with lots of budding engineers getting the chance to test their skills with Arati in Term 2. We had great fun in Fort Lucan on our school tour with the big water slide providing great entertainment. Finally, on the sporting front, we held a very successful 3rd Class Hurling League where the boys got their first chance to show their skills before progressing to wear the Blue and Yellow of St. Mary’s in future years. I would like to wish all the boys in 6th class the best of luck in their future endeavours after St. Mary’s.

I

t has been an absolute pleasure to have been the boys’ teacher in 5th and 6th class. This class have been full of enthusiasm, energy and kindness over the past two years. They are incredibly diligent and hard-working and I have no doubt they will continue to develop and grow as they enter Secondary School.

I would like to commend the boys for their consistent work ethic over the periods of lockdown. A lot of boys were extremely creative when completing some baking, exercising and creative writing tasks. Highlights of mine include the Senior B Football championship win in 5th class as well as our regular, heated debates about class novels, current affairs and sporting news and drama, especially the failed Euro Super League debate! The boys in Room 8 have displayed wonderful examples of friendship and have been superb role models for the younger boys in St. Mary’s to look up to. I will miss the craic with the boys about Wexford Hurling, Mayo and Dublin Football and of course our weekly morning check-ins about the dramatic events of the Premier League.

I look forward to hearing how the boys adjust to Secondary School and to seeing them once again when they make their Confirmation.

have some great memories of this years graduating 6th classes. I started working in St. Mary’s when these boys were in second class.

They were always a great group to work with and I vividly recall the diligence the boys displayed in preparation for their communion. I have personally taught two of the classes and I have no hesitancy in describing both as the ‘best in the school’. I have very fond memories of a school tour to The Crystal Maze in County Meath in second class as well as some great sporting trips to places like Terenure and Croke Park. All the boys in each class should be very proud of the way they have represented themselves and their school whether that be in choirs, concerts, or the sports field. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best in secondary school and beyond.

Teachers’ Memories

N

eedless to say the last two years have been the most unique of my teaching career having this group of boys in both 5th Class and 6th Class. Who would have thought that words such as social distancing, vaccinations, sanitising, pandemic, facemasks and similar would become so much part of their vocabulary and part of their school lives. While the arrival of Covid, and subsequent teaching through the pandemic, will be one of the lasting memories for me and the boys, it is how they dealt with it that will really stands out for me.

doing it for years. Again their willingness to engage with the videos and lessons being supplied, and posting their work back, made my job worthwhile. Even the Zoom calls went off without a hitch and were a bit of fun.

While 5th Class started out like any other year with the boys dressing up for Halloween, going on a trip to Croke Park to watch the school football team win and creating their Rugby World Cup projects, it certainly didn’t end that way. Thursday 12th March 2020 saw the immediate closure of all schools and what impressed me so much about this group of boys is how well they coped with the change from in school to home school.

In spite of their educational environment being completely altered, and having no real contact with their teacher or classmates, they succeeded in continuing with their education the best they could. They also showed off their extra-curricular skills by posting baking, construction, jigsaws, art and excursion photos to Weebly, which I really enjoyed, and allowed them some sort of connection with each other.

Not to talk about Covid the whole time, a recent memory of the boys that I really enjoyed was our trip to Zip-It. It was my first time visiting the forest adventure park and I was astonished at how high some of the platforms and ziplines were. I thought maybe that they were too high for 12-13 year olds but the boys showed no fear whatsoever. They tore through the beginners’ green course and went straight onto the harder and higher yellow, blue and white courses. To hear them laughing, joking with each other and generally having a good time showed the importance of going on these kind of trips. It was great to hear them say how much fun they were having and how they were really enjoying it. Even the bus arriving late to pick us up couldn’t dampen their spirits. It was such a fun day.

In 6th Class their ability to take the pandemic on the chin and to roll with the punches became even more amazing with their return to school in September 2020. They immediately had to adapt to rules on bubbles, pods, hand sanitising, social distancing, cough etiquette and interactions with each other as soon as they walked through the doors.

This adaptation happened without hesitation and without complaint.

They carried on with their lessons as if nothing was different and made my job a whole lot easier. The boys raised their game even more during the January lockdown, coping with home-schooling as if they’d been

I have had an amazing two years with the boys and I enjoyed every minute of teaching with them. It was a pleasure to meet and to get to know them all. I wish them all the best for secondary school and for whatever they may get up to into the future.

remember being in lockdown and doing school at home. Mr Mac Réamoinn sent us fun things to do over lockdown like one time he asked us to do a nature documentary in the style of David Attenborough, it was so much fun. He also sent us recorded videos for lessons and on Fridays we even did class zoom calls to catch up and play games.

I remember me running all over the house trying to find something during a game where Mr Mac Réamoinn asked us to look for a particular thing. It was so much fun.

uring lock down (the worst time of my life) there weren’t many amazing memories but there were sometimes when I had a good time. The best things were that I didn’t have to wake up at 7:30 5 days a week and I could wake up at 11:00 instead.
