FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

An Invitation from The O’Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University

As a Greek Philosopher said some 2500 years ago: “There is nothing permanent except change.” This phrase has popped into my mind so often over the past few months.

At The O’Shaughnessy, we are thrilled to announce our change to a new season: new events and opportunities to come together and explore our shared humanity.

I hope you will book a ticket to one of our Bonnie Jean Kelly & Joan Kelly Distinguished Visiting Scholars Lectures — both Pulitzer Prize winning Isabel Wilkerson and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honorable Dame Jacinda Ardern — will take our stage, and the conversations these world-renowned women share with us are sure to be impactful.

Perhaps you might want to try something new and subscribe to our season: from a concert version of The Sound of (Black) Music (familiar tunes as you’ve never heard them before), to accomplished film, TV, and stage actor and author Mandy Gonzalez in her one-woman tour de force, you can choose any six of the eleven events in our Presented Series for just $99.*

At St. Kate’s there is change ahead, too. We are thrilled to welcome our 12th president, Dr. Marcheta Evans, who brings her transformational leadership to our campus. Her experience driving inclusive and purpose-driven academic environments will guide our ongoing evolution as an institution.

Maybe you could change us. What does it mean to be in a relevant, authentic relationship with our community? How can we better serve the region, and what does it look like to be truly indispensable? If you have thoughts on these questions, I’d love to hear from you.

Maybe our art could change you. We so often categorize arts experiences as a “nice to have,” but I am not the first to suggest that engaging with art is its own way of knowing: a way of understanding ourselves and the experiences of others. A unique way of connecting with family and friends, as we share arts experiences together. A vehicle to bring peace, wonder, laughter or revitalization to our lives and sustain us on our own, often challenging and always changing life journeys. I wish you positive change in the months ahead. And invite you, sincerely, to spend a sliver of your time with us.

*Offer valid through October 3, 2024.

David Attenborough meets Laurie Anderson in The MOTH PROJECT, a new production from Peter Kiesewalter, GRAMMY-nominated and EMMY-winning creator of the East Village Opera Company. Blending music, family history, and moth lore, The MOTH PROJECT brings art and science together in entirely original and unexpected ways.

This show features two musicians performing a genre-defying range of music –from Bach to Joni Mitchell to KISS to original songs – while a stunningly integrated visual tour of images are projected onto them, enveloping them into a strange and remarkable world. Between songs, a narrative arc traces the parallel journeys of a moth’s life cycle and one family’s migration to North America.

Isabel Wilkerson

Our Racial Moment of Truth

Thursday, Oct. 3 | 6 p.m.

oshag.stkate.edu/wilkerson

Pulitzer Prize winner and National Humanities Medal recipient Isabel Wilkerson is the author of The New York Times bestseller and critically-acclaimed Caste and National Book Critics Circle Award winner The Warmth of Other Suns. A gifted storyteller, Wilkerson captivates audiences with the universal human story of migration and reinvention, as well as the enduring search for the American dream.

With the high-profile killings of unarmed African-Americans at the hands of police and civilians, protests are mounting and debates intensifying. These events have left many people asking just how far we have really come since the days of Jim Crow — and the need for dialogue has never been more acute. In this timely lecture, Isabel Wilkerson addresses the persistence of racial injustice as a national challenge and what history can teach us as we work to resolve it.

The Right Honorable Dame Jacinda Ardern

Friday, March 7 | 6:30 p.m.

oshag.stkate.edu/ardern

Prime Minister of New Zealand (2017–23); Senior Fellow, Harvard University; Patron of the Christchurch Call; Board Member, The Earthshot Prize.

The Right Honourable Dame Jacinda Ardern became the Prime Minister of New Zealand at just 37 years of age. During her time in office, she faced the challenges of a live-streamed domestic terror attack against New Zealand’s Muslim community, a volcanic eruption, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms. Ardern is a champion of women’s empowerment. While in office, New Zealand reached 50% representation of women in parliament, and on government-appointed boards. She decriminalized abortion, improved pay equity laws, and extended paid parental leave to 6 months — all while being only the second woman in the world to have a baby while leading her country.
