DENSITY AND DESIRE

SINT-AMANDSBERG, Ghent februari 2020 till may 2020 in colaboration with Brent Paelinck

This project is the culmination of three bachelor years. It was the first time we had to develop a big project on all aspects and scales. Focusing on terms like gentrification, density, mixed uses, and integration, we developed a project that combined different housing typologies like co-housing, kangaroo-housing, studios, and apartments. Respecting the existing limits and environment, the three blocks are disposed so that they create spaces with a different status: private, collective, and public. A fourth smaller volume introduces the nomad aspect. A space where someone could stay temporarily and work at the existing ateliers.

THE ACCIDENTAL SHIFT

MERELBEKE, Ghent

september 2018 till december 2018

One of the positive aspects of the bachelor was how much time we spent working on models, cutting, and gluing materials. Working in groups of 8 people for this project, each one of us had a different function and a housing program to fulfil. All the plots were adjacent and formed a unique and bizarre whole. Not only each plot had to be well designed, but it also had to respect the limits with the surrounding ones.

The housing block is located at the south of the plot. To the north, an outdoor gallery creates a circulation axis facing a green space (designed by a fellow student). The fitness is located at the east side and faces a huge square. Finally, the west façade of the building is separated by a row of trees from that neighbour’s building.

ATELIER DOK NOORD

OUDE DOKKEN, Ghent februari 2021 till may 2021 in collaboration with Leah Weimer

The most urban-scaled project of the portfolio shows how a grey industrial area could be reshaped and revitalized adopting the doctrines of the 15-minute city and the ideas of Richard Sennett. We tried to re-allocate the different functions of each company and improving their efficiency while integrating research, retail, and housing functions. In parallel, a new green space was created to invade the ghosted spaces and create qualitative relations. The objective was to reactivate and connect. Concepts like productive city, porosity and time efficiency played a strong role in the design process.

TER KAMERENBOS, Brussels september 2019 till december 2019 in collaboration with Ben Pourveur

Located in one of the biggest parks of Brussels, this project was conceived as a structure that would be demolished a few years later from its construction. Two words were crucial here: temporality and circularity. We aimed for a strong geometrical project using different shapes and correlations. By creating different levels some hierarchy is created: there is a sauna on the upper level and a bathing platform on the lower one. At the street side, a long block serves as changing- and restrooms. The waterslide works as an example of the playfulness we had while developing the project.

STUDIO A - DETENTION HOUSE

EKKERGEM, Ghent september 2020 till december 2020 in collaboration with Hannelore Scheipers

Studio A was a project in which we had to design three detention homes in the city centre of Ghent. These homes served as reintegration places for ex-convict people, notably women with children. This allowed the kids to be close to their mother and vice versa while living in a hospitable entourage. The three detention blocks have a different status: red is for the closed regime, orange for the semi-open regime and blue for the open one. The limits and heights were two crucial aspects in the design process. The whole complex is accessible by a small building with a semi-transparent façade that would never suggest what the building really is.

MASTER DISSERTATION

19ème ARRONDISSEMENT, Paris september 2021 till augustus 2022

Paris is a vibrant, beautiful, and complex city that has evolved enormously throughout the years. In 1905 a new hospital for contagious diseases was build from the ashes of a military hospital: the “Hôpital Claude Bernard”. It would be later known as the hospital where HIV was first isolated in Europe. The site and its typology were unique. After sorting all the archive documents that we had at our disposal, we created a 3D model of what the site had been. We also used specific episodes that we had found in the documents to create semi fictious narratives which would allow all future lectors to dive in the hospital and feel its spaces.

B : Je suis épuisé… je ne peux plus de ce travail. Chérie, si j’avais su l’intensité de travail que ça allait être depuis le début… je n’aurais pas accepté cette tâche. Lors de mon incorporation il y a deux ans ont été 25 personnes travaillant dans le système de buanderie et désinfection du linge. Aujourd’hui on n’est que 16 et on continue à faire le même travail !

A : Mon bouquin, tu ne penses pas que tu exagères un peu là ? Il est vrai que vous êtes moins de buandiers mais logiquement vous aurez moins de linge à laver non ?

B : Pas du tout !!! J’estime qu’on désinfecte, sèche et plie entre 1200 et 1400 kilogrammes de linge par jour… peut être que je me trompe mais après deux ans je sais faire une estimation assez correcte…

A : Si tu le dis. Allez, pense en positif, demain c’est ton dernier jour de travail pour la semaine. Je suis libre le dimanche moi aussi, on pourrait aller se promener sur les fortifications ? J’aimerais voir le coucher du soleil en hauteur. On peut même faire un piquenique.

B : Oui, oui. Aucun problème, si t’en a envie… mais quand même, je suis épuisé. Comment vais je faire pour travailler l’après-midi avec cette chaleur ? Oh là, je ne peux plus.

A : Allons chéri, tu es plus fort que ça. Et puis, si je me rappelle bien tu travaille constamment à l’intérieur non ? Le bâtiment des ateliers est assez haut. Avez vous une bonne ventilation à l’intérieur ?

B : Ah non, certainement pas ! J’étouffe tous les jours là-dedans. C’est plus humide que dans les bains turcs où tu aimes autant aller. Mais quand même, tu as raison, je ne dois pas me plaindre… les garçons qui portent le linge sale doivent passer un bien pire moment que moi.

A : Sale ? Je pensais que tu ne touchais rien d’infecté ! Ne me dis pas ça s’il te plaît chéri, te protèges-tu suffisamment ?

B : Mais oui, ne t’en fait pas. Je t’ai dit la vérité ! Je travail qu’avec le linge désinfecté. Je cours aucun danger. Écoute, le système est bien pensé et fonctionne à merveille. Cette année il n’y a eu aucun buandier infecté par les maladies. Tout d’abord, la buanderie ou l’on désinfecte tout est séparée de la salle de pliage et du séchoir. Les infirmières ont dans chaque pavillons une boîte en zinc ou fer blanc galvanisé avec un couvercle mobile. Après avoir attendu un malade, elles déposent le linge usé dans ces boîtes. danger de s’infecter en tant qu’infirmière…

A : Tranquille, je porterais des gants.

B : Oui, oui, je le sais. Mais bon, je continue à t’expliquer… une fois la boîte est pleine, un garçon du service prend la boîte et la transporte dans un espace aménagé dans chaque quartier. C’est un bâtiment à part. Il y en a trois dans l’hôpital tu sais ? Ce sont les mêmes ou ils déposent les malades qui sont décédé dans les salles d’attention. Une fois déposée dans ces salles, l’équipe de salubrité nous l’apporte au matin de la journée suivante. Ils déposent le linge salle directement dans la solution désinfectante. J’ai dû la changer ce matin et elle puait, si tu savais… le savon noir qu’elle porte est horrible. C’est après des heures d’immersion dans la solution que je touche vraiment le linge. Il est très propre à ce moment, je te l’assure. Donc ne t’en fais pas, je ne cours aucun risque d’infection. Le reste du travail est pour les buandières et les filles de service. Elles plient tout et le donnent aux garçons pour être redistribué dans les différents quartiers.

A : En fait, ton travail est bien simple. [Elle rit avec affection]

B : Disons que ma fonction est cruciale dans le procès. [Il rit aussi]

A : J’aimerais bien venir te visiter lorsque tu travailles. Je t’imagine déjà en train de bouger les chariots avec tes forts muscles, que j’aime autant [clignant l’œil]. On pourrait même se prendre une pause là-dedans.

B : Tu ne sais pas ce que tu dis, je suis en train de suer constamment. Le chef de service ne te laissera pas entrer. De plus, l’espace est sombre, humide et assez salle pendant le jour. Et la morgue est juste à côté, je vois passer des figures couvertes par un drap constamment, je suppose que ce sont les corps des malades décédés. Et puis le bâtiment est horrible. C’est une congestion de petites salles. Impossible que tu viennes, je ne veux pas te mettre en danger.

A : Mais oui chéri, laisse-moi voir l’intérieur de l’hôpital. Je veux savoir si j’aimerais y travailler dans le futur.

B : Non, s’il te plait. C’est trop risqué pour les gens externes au service. Et je pourrai perdre mon travail… la buanderie est de l’autre côté du complexe. On devrait prendre tout le long du chemin des non-infectés pour y arriver et c’est plein de docteurs et infirmières. Trop risqué.

A : Oh, tu ne me laisse jamais faire ce que je veux.

B : Mais non, je me préoccupe et je veux te protéger.

A : N’importe quoi !

B : Bon, on verra ça plus tard. Je dois retourner au travail. Ma pause est finie. À plus tard mon amour.

Taking pictures with my small Olympus camera is something I have been enjoying since the start of my second bachelor year. Although I already liked it as a kid. It does not matter if it is while I am travelling, or in a family reunion or at my balcony. I always enjoy having my camera with me and freezing moments as I see them. It allows me to observe and document sequences of (my) daily life. For me, it is not about taking a good picture or following the art of photography by the letter but about communicating with an image and creating emotions and reflections.
