TWELFTH BY THE SEA Welcome to Portrush
An Orange family day at Portrush
After hosting the Irish Open in 2012, and its annual sucess in terms of both the North West 200 and Air Show, Portrush is an obvious venue for Northern Ireland’s oldest and largest tourist event – The Glorious Twelfth. While we as an Institution commemorate it primarily as a religious event we are aware of it cultural tourism credentials, and welcome the benefits its brings to venues which play host each year. We would thank Ballycastle District for organising today, and wish them well in the year ahead. Portrush is one of Northern Ireland's main Holiday Destinations. Portrush has a great location, being situated on a mile long peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean on the North coast of N. Ireland. This affords panoramic views over the ocean to the, Causeway Coast, Scottish Isles and the Donegal hills. With a population of about 6,000 people and has two exceptional beaches, superb restaurants, quality hotels and many family entertainment venues. Attractions such as the Giants Causeway, Royal Portrush Golf Club, the Old Bushmills Distillery and Carrick--a-Rede Rope Bridge are located nearby. Portrush hosts the North West 200 and the Raft Race in May followed by the
Mini Weekend on the North Coast, the North West Pipe Band Championships in August in addition to the N. Ireland Air Show in September. Historically Portrush has a long connection with the Protestant cause and it is fitting to mark aspects of that proud tradition, researched by the Institution as part of its Education and Cultural Tourism Policy.
Portrush as part of the ancient kingdom of Dalriada, had Dunluce and Dunserverick Castles as a focal point of life and conflict. It was a costal frontier which saw many interesting episodes Ulster’s history. ........................Contd on page two
